Power Rangers Online Newsletter Issue 1 Volume 1
A New Beginning
By PRangerX
In the old days of PRO Mike "ChronoRanger” Wayne used to run a newsletter that came out periodically. It chronicled all the events going on in with Power Rangers, Sentai and the fandom of both shows This Newsletter was very popular and one of my favorite reads back in the day
Now that I am in control of PRO, I feel it is time to bring back that newsletter. We may not be capable of putting out a newsletter as good as Mike's. But we can do our best to put out the best newsletter possible. This is the first issue of the newsletter. We hope you like it. It will be distributed via the PRO Yahoo Group. If you do not wish to receive the newsletter in the future there is an option at the yahoo group that prevents you from getting group emails. Later on this newsletter will appear on the PRO Site, among other places.
This newsletter is produced by Power Rangers Online, in association with The Legacy Continues. RangerKing and I (PRangerX) will be in charge of this newsletter. I can't thank RangerKing enough for all his hard work. He really got this newsletter together. We have no association with Disney or Power Rangers; we are just fans running a non profit newsletter.
This issue includes a few editorials, an interview with Joe Rovang, commentary on SPD episodes and more. We hope you enjoy this edition. I have a few ideas for next edition, that will hopefully make your reading experience even better.
Possible Omega Ranger Debut? (Contains Spoilers)
By RangerKing
The episode titles of episodes 21-22 of Power Rangers Space Patrol Delta. The titles are the two-part episode “Messenger” and the singular episode “Zapped”. “Messenger, Part 1” is about Morgana and her quest to conquer and destroy Earth and by doing so she will enlist the help of some powerful allies. In “Messenger, Part 2” Morgana is about to finally defeat the Power Rangers when a mysterious Power Ranger from the future (possibly the Omega Ranger) comes to help our heroes. “Zapped” also carries on the plot of Morgana wanting to destroy Earth and the Power Rangers when she gives a magician a wand in exchange for his help to destroy the Power Rangers. No dates have been given to these episodes as of yet but I encourage people to watch them because they do sound like a good bunch of episodes.

On Fridays there will be a switch of Mondays schedule with S.P.D. being shown at 7:30 pm and PRG at 9:00 pm. On Saturdays and Sundays Power Rangers Generations and Power Rangers S.P.D. will be shown for one hour (one episode each) starting at 7:00 pm.
A Response to S.P.D.'s Naysayers
By: PRangerX
According to various reports; Power Rangers' ratings and Toy Sales have dropped during SPD. Some people claim this is because the story does not relate enough to kids and that the general season is not a well written one. They think things are too unbelievable. They think the characters change too much and that it isn't what Power Rangers is supposed to be. I will not be getting into the ratings or an analysis of them. That is not my strength. I am writing this article to respond to SPD's critics and to give my own opinions on the season so far.
Space Patrol Delta is a wonderful show that seems to try and go far beyond being a kid’s show. Its characters are interesting; it tries to give us an engaging plot. Each episode has a story of its own that tries to teach the children a valuable lesson. To keep viewers interested we have been treated to a few on going subplots. First there was the origin of the Rangers (which was revealed in Sam Part 2). Than we learned Cruger's back story. It is intriguing as we continue to explore Gruumm rivalry with Cruger. Another interesting plot was the mystery of what Mora was before she meant Gruumm. We have since learned she is Morgana, but the mystery was fun while it lasted.
Some of the best episodes of SPD taught kids valuable lessons and had a good engaging story to get viewers interested. The "Sam" two parter taught us that being different wasn't bad and that we all had a responsibility to use our gifts for good. You really wanted Z to get this idea through to Sam. Another good episode was the "Shadow" multi parter. We learned how Cruger lost everything, even his wife to the Troobians. We saw how intense and angry he was about the whole thing. It was an excellent template for his debut as the Shadow Ranger. One of my personal favorites this season was "Idol." "Idol" showed how sometimes people change, even close friends. It truly put the Sky character through an interesting dilemma. Should he turn in his friend gone bad or let him get away? The episode was about the fall of a friendship and one mans duty that superceded that friendship.
The Characters of SPD are interesting. You have Jack, the street kid not used to leading a team. Sure he has good leadership qualities, but he never had the chance to lead a team like he is now. We have watched him grow into a leader. Syd is interesting because she is a valley girl, yet is still strong. Bridge is a wacky genious and is easy to laugh with. Z is a strong woman that balances out Syd's valley girl qualities. Sky is perhaps the most interesting Ranger. He is arrogant and head strong. Yet, he has a strong sense of duty and generally wants to be a hero. It’s just some times his rudeness and jealousy of Jack cause him to do some unwise things. Its fun watching him while he learns to lighten up and accept his role as the Blue Ranger (after he always wanted to be Red like his dad). Cruger is an interesting character. His background is tragic. As a mentor, he is very wise. He is very intense, yet very kind at the same time.
The action in SPD has been top notch. With great zord battles and a lot of good ground battles with the Krybot foot soldiers. The zord battles are innovative. In that sometimes the Rangers face monsters in robots and other times they face the monsters themselves. It’s not a norm for Power Rangers season to have regular robots used by the villains. At least not in the way SPD has done it. The fight scenes are really high tech and really stand out.
The villains for SPD maybe not are the most interesting but they have their fine points. These could lead the villains to be more notable by the end of the season. You have Gruumm, the bad ass Emperor who at the very least is one scary dude. You have Mora/Morgana and her mysteriousness. Plus you have a true free agent known a Broodwing, a man who will do anything for money. These contrasting villains will make for an interesting ride for the rest of the year.
SPD is not perfect. Sometimes the fact that it’s a kid’s show brings it down. I mean the seriousness and childlikeness don't always blend well. The comedy isn't always that great. Sometimes the plots and their resolutions are rushed. But obviously stuff like this will happen you have to target things to kids.
In closing, I feel that some people are being too hard on SPD. It is a good show and I don't thing the ratings are doing it justice. Maybe the kids just aren't interested. But I think the writers have at least tried to give them episodes to relate to. I really think SPD Is an interesting show with good characters. It will only get better by the end of the season. Let’s give SPD a chance. Hopefully the kids will too.
Conversations with Cast & Webmasters
Interview with Joe Rovang of the Writer’s Guide to the Power Rangers Universe, conducted by RangerKing
1. Where did you get the inspiration to do the Writers Guide? 2. Why exactly did you do the Writer's Guide?
I thought fanfic writers would get good use out of a guide that comprehensively listed continuity details. This was back in the days of "Turbo" and "Space" when a number of main characters had extensive, interconnected backgrounds which were of special interest to fanfic writers. I was one such writer, although I ended up spending more time on the guide than on additional stories.
3. Tell us some things about yourself we might not know.
I got married in August, 2004, to my beautiful wife Angela.
4. Why did you stop writing the Writers Guide?
Work on the guide became too exhaustive for the amount of time I had available after graduating college, and the show just seemed to be tapering off the importance of continuity. I was also suffering from a lack of Power Rangers availability in my area (before the days of online encodes), which together contributed to my retiring from the project. I'm very glad that Jesse has offered to continue work on the guide.
5. When did you first begin to watch Power Rangers?
I watched from day one, mostly due to bewilderment at the promos of robot dinosaurs attacking a giant rubber monster. It reminded me of Voltron (which of course shares Sentai roots with Power Rangers). I was hooked once the Green Ranger showed up. Amy Jo Johnson also held my interest for a while.
6. What did you think about production being moved to New Zealand and that Doug Sloan and Ann Austen would be returning as the Executive Producers?
I don't focus much on producers and so on (I'm more of a continuity specialist), but I had mixed feelings on Doug Sloan returning. One on hand, I assumed he would be more aware of previous continuity and less likely to trample on it, but at the same time I didn't much care for his take on "Turbo." I was also disappointed over the move to New Zealand because it put a serious damper on possible cameos by former actors who lived in Los Angeles.
7. When do expect Power Rangers to end and what do you expect will happen within the fandom when this occurs?
I think the show will stay in production as long as action adventure is acceptable entertainment for boys and the merchandise remains profitable. Barring some catastrophic social or economic shift, I think Power Rangers will be around for a long time. And hey, there’s always a rerun.
8. If you could, would you join the Production Staff? And what would you change about the show?
I'd like to see more exploration of ancient history, existing characters' back stories... Learn about the nature of humanity, good, and evil in the Power Rangers universe... Delve into some more mature ethical and sociological issues (within the context of spandexed superheroes and giant robots). Of course, the things that I like aren't necessarily best for the overall viability of the show, but all in all I'd like to see the show give its audience a bit more credit.
9. Who should win the 2004 Presidential Election?
The one who makes better decisions.
10. Why did you choose SirStack to become the "new man on campus"?
Jesse volunteered when I issued an open invitation for a new editor, and I couldn't be more pleased that he did. I don't know of anyone who has the combination of dedication and attention to detail that Jesse has.
11. Do you have any advice for people who want to do sites similar to yours?
I hope each person finds their own specialty or niche that suits them best. I'd encourage people to make the site that interests them, and there's a decent chance it will interest others too. Also, try not to be too proprietary - it's a little silly to take other people's work (Power Rangers) and criticize others for borrowing yours.
12. Do you see yourself as a "Top-Dog" in the fandom? And do you think people who are "Top-Dogs" in the fandom use their knowledge for all the wrong reasons in the fandom?
I made my site as a service to others who share my interests. I pay as little attention as possible to any notions of the fandom elite who somehow deserve more respect than anyone else.
Note from RANGERKING: this interview is a bit outdated and is from 2004 but was used to occupy the space of “Conversations with Cast and Webmasters.

Power Rangers to appear at Sci-Fi Con on June 12
By RangerKing
Los Angeles will play host to this years Comic Book and Science Fiction Convention on June 12, 2005. One of the features are the world famous Power Rangers, sort of. The cast who plays the five main Power Rangers on Power Rangers Space Patrol Delta will attend the convention. Those attending are Alycia Purrot (Pink Ranger Syd Drew), Chris Violette (Blue Ranger Sky Tate), Monica May (Yellow Ranger Z Delgado), Brandon Jay McLaren (Red Ranger Jack Landors), and Matt Austin (Blue Ranger Bridge Carson). Executive Producers Greg Aronowitz and Bruce Kalish will also be attending the convention with the ranger actors. The cast and producers will answer questions during a panel discussion as well as sign autographs. You may submit questions to be asked by the fandom’s very own Ray Cauldron (admin of RangerBoard.com and former webmaster of RangerCentral.com) at www.rangerboard.com. The convention takes place at the Shrine Auditorium in the Expo Center in Los Angeles on June 12, 2005 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Editor’s Note: Because the release date for newsletter was pushed back the news on the convention is a bit late. Limited edition posters with cast autographs were given out by people representing Power Rangers. Koichi Sakamoto, Brandon Jay McLaren, Monica May, and Chris Violette were unable to attend probably due to other projects. Ray Calderon posted play by play of the event at Rangerboard.
Fighting in the Fandom
By PRangerX
I am tired of all the arguments and self important attitudes that our present in this fandom. I intend for this post to be an editorial on just why the in fighting in this fandom is not necessary, nor is the right way for this fandom to continue on.
Overall, the Power Ranger's Fandom is a great place. It is full of wonderful websites and message boards, all dedicated to our favorite TV Show. These sites and boards have been created by very bright and creative individuals. They are visited by other great individuals. Together these participants interact and are the very back bone of the fandom. They provide a place where all fans can go to read up on and discuss their favorite show. But these sites have also led to much in fighting.
These fights are usually over something egotistical. People try to out scoop each other to make some name for themself. People try to claim people have overstepped their bounds. People tend to take things too personally and get too mad over things that shouldn't even matter. To get more specific, let me cite some examples.
A year or so ago Snoops Warner decided to create a website to archive the past work's of great webmasters. He promptly put up an archive of the old Power Rangers Online Archives Website. This ended up creating a stir. People claimed Snoops to be some sort of web thief. Snoops eventually took the website down at the request of the webmaster (Amit Bheumik). Now I though it was silly for people to make Snoops into some kind of criminal. Snoops were trying to do a service to the fandom and were in no way trying to take credit for PROA. He had a great idea to enhance the fandom that was meant with so much hostility that people jumped to conclusions. Now I don't fault Amit for asking Snoops to take the site down. It was his choice and was completely understandable. But it just gives me more respect for Ray Calderon and Joe Rovang. They both let others continue their work (Joe is back now). Which is something not easy for any webmaster to do, nor should it be required.
Another more recent example came from RangerKing's Erin Cahill interview. Will Mayberry and others became upset that RangerKing interviewed Erin (since Will runs her official website) and Will felt that RK overstepped his bounds by doing the interview. Now one must respect Will's hard work in this fandom. But at the same time I think it is silly to assume he is the only one permitted to represent Erin in this fandom. That is just silly. RK's interview hurt no one. If someone wanted to interview Erin tomorrow they shouldn't have to go through Will to get it. The only permission they need is Erin's herself, now Will seems to be a great guy and (like I said) a hard worker. So don't think I am trying to make him out to be the bad guy here.
The above are just a few examples of how I think people are taking things too seriously. A lot of in fighting like this goes on. It’s really silly when you think about it. We are gathered together to discuss what is generally a kid’s show after all. Why should we be so petty and get mad at the work of others. Webmasters and contributors should stop worrying about what others think. Don’t worry if you are being out scooped or people are "honing in on your territory". Just relax and have fun, if your work has become so much of a chore than you always can end your involvement. People need to chill out and not take this stuff so seriously.
Now I am not saying people have no right to get mad if their work is outright stolen. Nor am I encouraging others to steal people's works. That is a very bad thing that no one should do.
This is a great fandom with a lot of great people. Let’s not let this in fighting discourage people from contributing. As I have said, just relax and enjoy your work. This is a fandom and should not become any kind of obsession.
Classic Newsletter Moments
Edited by PRangerX
The Power Rangers Online Newsletter had some interesting interviews and articles back in the day. This annual column will spotlight these in our new issues.
Back in August 2000 ChronoRanger ran an interview with Ray Calderon (Founder of Power Rangers Central and RangerBoard). The Interview was an interesting read and deserves its place in this look to the newsletter's past. Ray recently claimed to have written the interview himself. Which is pretty funny? No worries, we won't have our future guests write their own interviews. So without further delay, let’s blast back to PRO's Past:
Webmaster Interviews
Exclusive Interview with Ray Calderon - Webmaster of Power Rangers Central
[Power Rangers Online] When did you first start watching Power Rangers?
[Power Rangers Central - Ray] I started watching at around the Green Ranger saga. When MMPR first premiered, I actually hated it, and wanted no part in it. I was really into the X-Men cartoon at the time, and I resented the fact that MMPR was getting better ratings than X-Men. The first thing to turn me on to MMPR was the toy line. The first 8 inch Red Ranger toy blew me away with its possibility. I figured any show with such nifty action figures couldn't be all that bad.
[Power Rangers Online] What other shows do you watch besides Power Rangers?
[Power Rangers Central - Ray] Beast Machines, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, Batman Beyond, Xena, Cleopatra 2525 (an excellent show, it is very much like PR), The Practice, WWF, various telenovelas.
[Power Rangers Online] Do you have any special powers?
[Power Rangers Central - Ray] I see dead people.
[Power Rangers Online] Do you remember the first Power Rangers website you ever visited?
[Power Rangers Central - Ray] Yeah it was the Morphing Grid, which was virtually the only source for any good Power Rangers information back then. I am giving such cliché answers aren't I?
[Power Rangers Online] Is PRC your first website?
[Power Rangers Central - Ray] Yes and no. It used to be solely a Power Rangers Zeo site, and eventually mutated/evolved into PRC. The current PRC
[Power Rangers Online] What made you decide to create PRC?
[Power Rangers Central - Ray] Well I first made the PRZ site to spread the scoop I had gotten on Zeo from the time I worked at Marvel Comics. Long before anyone had even heard of Zeo, I got a hold of some Saban reference material for a Zeo comic, which they had sent to Marvel. I posted the logo and the back story for Zeo on a simple page, which was on Mind spring at the time. From that point, I just continued adding PRZ material, then eventually branched out to Turbo, and finally integrated everything into PRC.
[Power Rangers Online] How long have you been working on PRC?
[Power Rangers Central - Ray] A little over four years.
[Power Rangers Online] What software do you use?
[Power Rangers Central - Ray] Photoshop 5.5 , Homesite 4.0, and CuteFTP 3.2
[Power Rangers Online] Do you have any other websites?
[Power Rangers Central - Ray ] Dragon Ball Z US - a small site with a bit of DBZ content for the American series, and Teledivas - a small picture gallery of Latin soap actresses.
[Power Rangers Online] What do you think of Sentai?
[Power Rangers Central - Ray ] I used to be really into it but I don't watch it anymore. I actually still get tapes of the latest shows for reference but I don't watch them
[Power Rangers Online] Do you have any gripes about the people who visit your site?
[Power Rangers Central - Ray ] Several. I took my e-mail address off of PRC just to stop getting messages from the visitors. Most of them are little kids who don't know any better, so they send me the stupidest questions and requests. Aside from the kids, there are many people who request content that has no place on PRC. I try to maintain a very specific focus on my site. I concentrate on the characters, technology, and events of the Power Rangers television universe. If you expect to find actor information, that's not going to happen. If you're expecting anything from the first movie, that's not going to happen. If you're expecting Sentai information, that's not going to happen. I'm not interested in creating content for any of those subjects. I also find it annoying that people constantly ask for the latest PR news, rumors, upcoming events, etc. That is totally not PRC's objective. I absolutely do not keep up with what is going on in PR outside of what you see on the show. Every now and then, I will post something I find newsworthy in the news section, but not much. I also stray off the goal a bit with the toy section, but that's because I am such a big toy fanatic, but PRC's main goal is to be an informational archive. You go there to see what happened last time on PR, what happened to certain characters, Zords, etc. Basically, to learn about the history, not the future. People also need to realize that I don't work for Saban or Power Rangers in any way, so I can't get them any inside scoops. And finally, I can't stand it when people demand updates. They have some nerve hassling me to make updates to PRC. I do this for free, with my own time and resources, and some people don't seem to be appreciative of this. I have no obligation to update this site at all, or to even maintain it.
[Power Rangers Online] What are your thoughts on web thieves?
[Power Rangers Central - Ray ] They are the scum of the Earth. If you are taking the time to make a Power Rangers website, you better damn well take the time to make your entire content original. It really pains me to see my material all over the web. It is just pathetic.
[Power Rangers Online] What are your favorite other Power Rangers sites?
[Power Rangers Central - Ray ] Honestly, I don't visit other Power Rangers sites.
[Power Rangers Online] Why not?
[Power Rangers Central - Ray ] I really don't have any interest in them. None of them really seem to offer anything I am looking for. I typically visit websites for television shows I know nothing about, or need to catch up on. For Power Rangers, I watch every single episode, so I am top of things. I don't need to go to any website for anything. Not only that, but most of the Power Rangers websites out there really suck.
[Power Rangers Online] So you've never heard of the following websites? Star points by Mesh Patel, Power Rangers Online Archives by Amit Bheumik, Power Rangers Spoiler Warnings by Jesse Herndon, Lightspeed Rescue Online by Sean Ekey, and Lightspeed to the Rescue by Will Mayberry.
[Power Rangers Central - Ray ] Star points I think I have vaguely heard of, I believe the author submitted his site to be linked on PRC. Lightspeed Rescue online, not sure. Lightspeed to the Rescue, doesn't ring a bell. The Spoiler warnings, I am on the mailing list, but I wasn't aware of the website. PROA on the other hand, I know very well. The author of that site is a good friend of mine, we used to chat it up on IRC all the time. It's a shame the site has been shut down.
[Power Rangers Online] That was your biggest competition right?
[Power Rangers Central - Ray ] Well, I have always been against the idea of the various Power Rangers sites on the net competing with each other. I always hear talk of "my site is going to demolish yours" and things like that, and it's just sad, really. There is room on the net for an unlimited number of PR sites, and each one has the ability to offer things the others don't. What is the point of competition? We are not in this for money or anything, but I guess some people are in it for glory, who knows.
[Power Rangers Online] How about Power Rangers Online?
[Power Rangers Central - Ray ] What's that?
[Power Rangers Online] You seem to be a bit of a recluse when it comes to communicating with the Power Rangers internet community. Any reason why you keep out of touch?
[Power Rangers Central - Ray ] I really don't care too much for the Power Rangers internet community. They seem to me like quite an unsavory bunch, especially in the newsgroup. All they seem to do is fight amongst each other and gang up on people who don't share their views. I don't know if that is still going on these days, but this has been my experience. As far as e-mail, well, I've already explained why I don't enjoy receiving e-mails from my site's visitors. I have better things to do than to listen to incoherent rants from AOL and WebTV users.
[Power Rangers Online] Ray, out of all the crazy messages you get on your message board, why did you respond to mine?
[Power Rangers Central - Ray ] Your guestbook entry asked to use the timeline on PRC. Normally, I would have told you to fuck off, but seeing as how I didn't even write the timeline, I figured I'd give you the go ahead to use. Also, I figured I'd chat you up a bit since you were also from Brooklyn.
[Power Rangers Online] Who is your favorite Ranger?
[Power Rangers Central - Ray ] I would have to say Ashley. I mean, look at her!
[Power Rangers Online] Favorite villain?
[Power Rangers Central - Ray ] Astronema, because she got to turn into Ashley once.
[Power Rangers Online] Is that your final answer?
[Power Rangers Central - Ray ] Hmm.. Can I use a lifeline?
[Power Rangers Online] Aside from the aforementioned Power Rangers Zeo scoop from Marvel, you also got the Power Rangers in Space scoop didn't you?
[Power Rangers Central - Ray ] Yeah, I did. I snuck into the Licensing Show in 1997 and snagged a press packet. The next day, the Power Rangers in Space logo and story were all over the net. I actually even met Haim Saban at the show, and shook his hand.
[Power Rangers Online] If only he knew!
[Power Rangers Central - Ray ] He would have had me thrown out on my head. From what I understand you've had a bit of experience in sneaking into the Licensing Show.
[Power Rangers Online] Yeah, I got the Time Force scoop this year.
[Power Rangers Central - Ray ] And you are getting hell for it aren't you?
[Power Rangers Online] Yeah, mostly from the newsgroup.
[Power Rangers Central - Ray ] See, what did I tell you about them?
[Power Rangers Online] You also met Jason David Frank right?
[Power Rangers Central - Ray ] Yeah, I was signing autographs at Toys R Us, and he was on line. He asked to jump ahead, but I told him he had to wait like everyone else.
[Power Rangers Online] People don't believe me when I say that we are friends in real life. Tell them the truth.
[Power Rangers Central - Ray] I've never met you before in my life.
[Power Rangers Online] WHAT??
[Power Rangers Central - Ray] I don't even know your real name.
[Power Rangers Online] Come on...
[Power Rangers Central - Ray] Ok I am just kidding. Yes everyone, we are really friends. I am even the godfather of his child.
[Power Rangers Online] I wouldn't go that far.
[Power Rangers Central - Ray] All right.
[Power Rangers Online] Any final words to Power Rangers fans out there?
[Power Rangers Central - Ray] Keep your noses clean, stay out of trouble, be kind to animals, and eat your vegetables.
[Power Rangers Central - Ray] And stop stealing from PRC.
[Power Rangers Online] Well, yeah, that too.
