Hey Jazz,

I remember a Jeep Grand Cherokee in "Porn Again" and then seeing it
again in "Truth or Consequence" -- I don't remember seeing a Mercedes
jeep.

An interesting Philly cast member sighting -- I saw Reamy Hall in a
Dell PC infomercial on TechTV -- it was a half-hour commercial and
from what I saw, she did a good job selling those PCs!

Hey all,

I was watching NBC last night and they showed an ad for "Miss Match"
a new series this fall starring Alicia Silverstone. Much to my
surprise, there was Rick Hoffman, making a smart-a**ed comment to her
character. I had not heard he was guesting in this show, but it
seems he is. I am thinking it is *probably* the pilot episode, since
there isn't alot of other footage available yet for most shows
premiering this fall. So... keep your eyes out if you are a Rick
Hoffman fan!

...Anyhow, enclosed please find my first recap, of 'Tall Tales'.

Sharp-eyed readers may recognise this as a post to Brandie's
kimdelaney.org board (with a lot of new and exciting extraneous
nonsense thrown in, mind you); but it was so long ago I'm counting on
the memories to be fuzzy. :^)

'Tall Tales':

Teaser: Kathleen's hurrying to begin the day when a decidedly
fragile-looking woman appears in her office, claiming to be a battered
wife who's desperate to get out of her marriage. We can tell this
because she sounds like she stopped off at the local shelter and
picked up several helpful brochures.
Though she's not the kind of lawyer the woman needs, our
ever-compassionate Katy offers to meet back with her at 6 pm anyway.
As the grateful woman leaves, Will arrives...and looks at her
sideways. Not for the usual reasons, either; I'm pretty sure even he
draws the line at women in slings and mussy hair.

The Cases: Kathleen is defending a woman who shot and killed her
rapist when it appeared the system wouldn't be able to give her
justice. The client doesn't want to deal, believing that once the jury
hears her story, they'll see the 'rightness' of her action. Which when
we eventually hear the story, makes some sense…especially since along
with the terror, sadism and mental trauma it includes mention of the
fact that the statute of limitations on rape is only five years. Man,
that's a stupid rule. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
However, Erin Farrelly has an equally compelling prosecution case to
make; all that juicy `vigilantism must necessarily destroy society'
oration, and she sells it for all she's worth…complete with
stiffly-righteous theme music. Perry Mason would kill for a cassette
tape of this tune.
But in the end it's all for naught: while the jury's out it's
discovered that one juror didn't disclose her own rape, guaranteeing a
new trial. Finally Kathleen persuades her client to plead instead, and
the judge lays down a lenient enough sentence that she can begin
getting her life together...something, she tearfully assures Kathleen,
she's more than eager to do.

Meanwhile, over in the comic relief...Will is defending Felix, a
'little person' whose equally little girlfriend surprised him on a
Jerry Springer-esque sleazefest with the news of her new, full-sized
lover Marty. Lovers old and new subsequently mixed it up in the studio
halls, and the big guy is now wearing a neck brace. (I love how,
after, what? fifty years of advances in medical technology? those big
bulky neck braces are still THE Hollywood shorthand for `an injury
severe enough to end up in court'.)
After attempting a rather slapdash 'Jenny Jones' defense, and
incidentally breaking up another fight between the rivals, Will
springs his real surprise: Stephanie the girlfriend, the only
eyewitness to the fight, is now more than ready to swear that a)Marty
started it, so it was self-defense, and b)her on-air revelation was
all an act to win Felix back. Whereupon Marty reveals an unexpectedly
noble and forbearing streak - one that Will not-so-unexpectedly falls
for completely; honestly, time we take up a collection and get this
guy some intuition from the Brain Store - and drops the charges. Will
convinces Terry to cut the case `short' (cue helpless legal giggles)
and the way is cleared for the little lovers to stage a treacly
reunion for the press.
Indeed, as Felix later explains to his lawyer, the whole thing –
Marty, fight, case, and all - was an act! He and his girl expect to be
living off the media fallout for a good long while….which would be a
really scary attitude if it wasn't also entirely practical. Can't you
just see the talk shows, book, reality TV series now? Why, the ep in
which Marty breaks down and blubbers out `The Untold Story!!!!' of how
he was forced into this degrading act will be an instant classic.
Back in the present, Will's of course seriously ticked at all
this...but then again, as Felix points out, he's also six-foot-two.

Meanwhile….On a break from their latest plot twists Will catches up
with Kathleen to explain that he's just remembered, he's pretty sure,
where he's seen the battered wife before: at a party he went to a year
or so back with Karen, a pity date. Great, says Kathleen, call Karen
back and confirm the sighting.
Will hems and haws.
Kathleen rolls her eyes in that very special way she reserves just for
him. "You got laid and never called the next morning, right?"
"Well, yeah…but a lot of men don't call, y'know…"
Gently but firmly she shoves his cell phone into his hand.
"I don't even know if she still works there…"
More eye-rolling. "Will. Make – the – call!"
"<Sigh…>" Dialing noises. "No good deed goes unpunished, I guess."
As it turns out, Karen still works there. Will discovers that his
memory's correct: the 'poor, fragile, abused' woman is really
Cabretti's paramour...and more to the point, she's also the reporter
Dan had mentioned would call on Kathleen soon. She was apparently
hoping that the battered act would inspire reciprocal confidences re:
the Cavanaugh marriage. Gotta give the girl points for moxie, I guess,
although not many for creativity; the sling was a nice touch, but the
tearful whimper needed a lot of work.
Kathleen of course storms back to the office, exposes the ruse, and
coolly demands a glowing story about Dan or else. The sullen reporter
gives in, with – thankfully – only minimal grouching re: The People's
Right to Know. I really hate when they do that, and besides, it's
entirely possible that Erin's theme music might've started up again.

Wrap-up at the Rooster: Erin complains to Terry that she feels like
she was set up to take the heat on the rape/murder case. Terry
patiently explains that yes, she was: winning or losing was all
secondary to making sure her boss the corrupt, womanising DA comes up
smelling like roses with the female voters. He then tells her not to
make a fuss - "Sometimes ignorance is bliss". Erin indignantly demands
if he's calling her ignorant, and he replies just as quickly (and
unbelievably endearingly) "No...I'm saying you're bliss." Terry dear,
you can lecture me anytime, OK? One smile leads to another, and before
long they're heading off to go lecture each other on...other stuff.

Meanwhile Will's less than thrilled to find himself waiting for Karen
to show up for a second date; but in the event he discovers that the
depressed, 'heavy' woman he remembered from two years ago is now a
glowing, sporty blonde who (in an absolutely wonderful display of
male-screenwriter wishful thinking) explains that Will's kindness
earlier had inspired her to [roughly] 'become the woman you made me
feel like'. He ends up inviting her to dinner...

But the most romantic closing moments of all belong to, natch,
Kathleen and her good Judge. Hmmmm...words don't really cut it
here...let's just say: Palatial hotel suite, marble bathtub filled to
the brim with bubbles, and of course champagne. :^)

Molly from the Philly Board asked: "Is [Jamie] really as beautiful and buff in
real life as he appears on the screen? And how tall is he. (For me, the taller,
the better.)

Answer: Yes and Yes. 6'1". Me, too.

Further explanation:

If you want to see what he looked like that night, go to the www.jamiedenton.com
web site and look under "Personal Appearances" -- JD and Me, ... In person, he
is a bit thinner (though still very buff); he has the look of a person who runs
but who is not a running fanatic. [I know that look really welll, having been
married to one, i.e., a marathon runner.] Since the camera puts off some
pounds, Jamie really needs to stay on the lean side -- but he didn't look too
thin.

He is very fair-skinned, so his face appears a little bit lighter than in some
roles when he is wearing makeup that adds color. [What I'm thinking of
particularly is the makeup from Philly, which I thought was the most attractive
of all the roles I've seen him in.] Having said that, he still looks great
without makeup, or in other roles with less tan-like makeup. Having seen the
trailer and the ABC commercial for next season's shows, I would recommend that
the Threat Matrix makeup person go with a slightly more tanned look -- although,
he still looks pretty great in the Threat Matrix pilot. Also, I would suggest
that the hair person in Threat Matrix go with the Philly haircut. I don't think
it would be too long for a Special Agent. I just thought that haircut was the
most attractive men's haircut to come along in years, and I was beginning to
notice some other actors using it too, with very good results. [Of course,
Jamie looks just fine even in the shorter hair, but I think the best look for
him is the Philly look (even without the robe).

Height -- I think he's 6' 1'' -- someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I
recognize that height also -- having been married to a 6'1" tall guy. I, too,
prefer height, even though I have none myself. (I'm 5 feet tall.) My ex used to
tell me that, when we were out together, he would notice other, taller, women
giving me really evil looks. His interpretation was that were angry at me for
"taking up" a tall man, when I could easily have been a nice person and only
taken up a short guy. Although I think men are generally pretty dense when it
comes to these things, I think he was correct in this observation. However, I
had to take his word that tall women were throwing me evil looks. I didn't
notice it. His explanation for my not noticing the evil looks is that I am too
short. This was also his explanation for why -- when we lived in L.A. -- he
noticed many more celebrities than I, even though we both lived (together) in
West Los Angeles. His theory on this was that my eye level was just shorter,
and I simply missed seeing a lot of tall people. I had no other plausible
explanation for why he saw more celebrities, so maybe he's right. Perhaps I
walk around tuning out tall things and people.

Well, I think that pretty well covers this topic. Am I going to get all sorts
of hate mail because I suggested a different makeup and hair than in the Threat
Matrix pilot?

Linda

It's been awhile since I posted, but I see there's a lot going these
days.

First, thanks Linda for the update on your talk with Jamie. It's so
interesting to hear what was planned for Philly and his character.
It wouldn't have mattered to me much what they had Judge Ripley do so
long as they let him have a career that was visible and an integral
part of the plot. Like many others, I thought his character's
potential was being wasted toward the end when they took him out of
the courtroom and turned him into Kathleen's Casanova and nothing
more.

I also liked the idea of introducing some trouble in paradise for
Kathleen and Jack. I wouldn't have wanted there to be a formal
breakup since I think it would have been good to show that some
couples can go through rough periods and still manage to stay
together. I agree, though, that happy, perfect couples do not make
for good drama over the long haul. Sure, it's great in reality, but
dull for fictional purposes.

Please do add more installments whenever you have time. And please
tell me this too: Is he really as beautiful and buff in real life as
he appears on the screen? And how tall is he. (For me, the taller,
the better.)

I was also surprised, very pleasantly, to hear that Jamie Denton is
starring in his own show this fall. I thought only Tom Everett Scott
and Rick Hoffman were signed on to their own shows and hadn't heard
about Jamie Denton's pilot. I will definitely be on the lookout for
it. It sounds like it could be quite a great program, as long as
they keep it relatively neutral politically and as long as there's no
character that even remotely resembles Tom Ridge or John Ashcroft!!!

And Scarlett, I'm sorry to hear that TES's show didn't get picked
up. Is that a definite? It seemed to me that it was supposed to be
high on the list, so maybe it will get picked up after some of ABC's
new shows inevitably fail after a week or two. But as we all learned
from the Philly fiasco, anything can happen and expectations have to
be kept low, unless of course you're aching to see another Jane or
Joe Shmow go out on dates!

I was also surprised, this time unpleasantly, to hear about Kim's
recurring woes. For years and years she was one of the few prominent
actresses who was able to steer clear of tabloid gossip and enjoy a
career where she got on so well with all her peers. I know you don't
want any focus on her personal life Dina, but I just wanted to say
that I'm rooting for her and hope to see her back to her formerly
strong and self-confident self and showing Hollywood that they can't
keep her down forever.

I meant to catch her return to NYPD Blue, but then forgot to record
it. I hope to catch it on the rerun. BTW, I recently bought TiVo and
it's without question a genius invention — light years ahead of VCR
programming and let's you enjoy your favorite programs when it's
convenient for you and with all the ads bypassed at the touch of a
button. (No, neither I nor anyone I know is associated with the
product; I rarely get jazzed up about gadgets, but I just wanted to
pass on a very favorable review for others who like to have better
control of their TV viewing and have it conform more to their own
schedules, not to mention being spared 20 minutes of commercials for
every one-hour drama you watch.)

Hope all is well with everyone.

Molly

public-interest (civil) lawsuit the entire season. [Jamie seemed
genuinely excited about being a public-interest type lawyer; I didn't
have the heart to tell him that it wasn't that great. I was unable,
however, to hide my opinion that I thought this plot development was
ridiculously bad.]

Wow this is not at all what I'd expected. I don't know if I love it or
hate it - it would depend on the execution I guess. One thing I really
loved about the show is the intricate web of relationships, both
personal and professional, that existed between the characters. With
Ripley no longer a judge, a huge part of it would've disappeared. On
the other hand, the writers did get themselves in a tight corner with
this character, so getting him to switch jobs is certainly a way out.
I think I might've preferred a scenario in which he is forced to quit
for some reason (hey Dan could've had a hand in it!) to him choosing
to leave - since it seems to be more on "Ripley with the halo" track,
but it may have worked as well.

> Then Jamie mentioned that Bochco and the writers were planning to
have Jack and Kathleen break up and then get back together again. [I'm
quite sure I wasn't able to hide what a lousy idea I thought that was.]
>

Well this was not a shock at all. I pretty much expected it. I agree
with the others that it would have added to the show - since for
dramatic reasons you just can't have the main character in a happy,
perfect relationship so early in the show. There was really no way to
go with this relationship other than onto the rocky path.

Looking forward to it!!!

You don't want me in a bad mood. =)

silly generalization I shouldn't have made in the first place and
b)eloquently making the case for the Philly writers' rationales re:
changes. I agree completely.

I agree with you Michelle -- I would have liked to see them break up.
It would have introduced a nice element of conflict into the
relationship that is always fun to watch, imo.

I'm not quite sure what is meant by Ripley being in a civil law firm
but I assume it would be suing companies or persons for negligence or
similar things? I think that would have been a good plan -- since
Ripley was stifled after the hook-up with Kathleen and him being a
hard-ass was one of the most enjoyable parts of the Ripley in Court
scenes. Damn, I'm getting nostalgic! :(

Thanks for sharing Part 2 Linda!

Dina :)
