MEETING AGENDA FOR MARCH 18, 2009

Dear Progressives,

 

The monthly meeting of PDA/DFA Progressive Democracy So.Jersey will be held this

in the Collingswood Library, 771 Haddon Ave, Collingswood, NJ 08108

 

PLEASE MAKE AN EFFORT TO ATTEND !!!!

 

There are many items to be addressed and we need your help and input to make them happen !!!! We are facing a crucial year and we really need everyone to participate, and please donate a couple of hours each month.

 

No one understands better than me what the past 8 years have done to wear activists down, but we don’t have much time before the Congressional races for 2010 begin.

 

If you aren’t aware of all the major issues that need to be addressed, you definitely need to attend this meeting. If you are aware, then we need you to be there to help support and work on those issues.

 

Items to be discussed:

  1. Upcoming Elections and candidates -
  • the deadline for petitions for Commission seats is on March 19th. [ Anyone taking on Jim Maley ?]
  • the deadline for petitions for County Committee seats is April 6th.

It would be nice to see every municipality have candidates for their town's committee seats. Will you consider running in your municipality ? So far we have :

 

Tim O'Neill plans to run for a Committee seat for the Collingswood Borough again this year. It would be nice to have other members join on the petition and run as a group platform. All it requires for Collingswood is a total of 20 signatures for the complete platform to run, but then we need everyone's help to win.

 

In all of position in politics, the most important one to hold is on the County Committee, because it all starts here....they decide who runs for the other offices, such as State Assembly,State Senate, House of Representatives, Senate, and so forth. See duties below:

Duties of County Committee people include nuts and bolts things like registering new voters, finding election board workers (e.g. competent people to run voting machines), serving as "challengers" on election day, GOTV (get-out-the-vote) and other campaign and election support.

They also serve as delegates to the annual County Convention (usually in March), where endorsement votes are held for County, State and National offices. Endorsement of local candidates is up to each municipal committee. Endorsed candidates get to run "in the column" with the Regular Democratic Organization on the Primary ballot. Other candidates are still free to run "outside the column" but face steep odds.

( Remember still in Collingswood we are fighting Eminent Domain abuse  [1] from King Maley , who represents over 2 dozen municipalities in  taking private land and turning it over to redevelopers ] and he also just gave 1.5 million dollars [2] to the Lumber Yard Projects to complete the units, since they couldn't secure financing from other avenues, those are your tax payer dollars...do you think your taxes will go up again this year? Now he has his eye on expanding his eminent domain powers , are you his next target?[3]  )

2. All of New Jersey Assembly and Senate are Up for Election including our Governor.  

Things are not looking good for Governor Corzine to be re-elected. The unions are not in favor of him and we are seriously looking at a Republican for our next Governor.  He is way down in the polls. What do you want to do about this ?

Now is a good time to have our state assembly members and senate  for a Townhall forum to answer questions, and push for their support of the state resolution for HR 676 currently as a resolution in both the assembly and senate. We need help to arrange these forums !!!!

3. Health Care Now – single payer healthcare events and help needed

a) HCAN (which is not HealthCare-Now) is having trainings around the state on their version of healthcare which still includes having the insurance companies involved [4]. If we are going to have a plan to cover all, this is the time to make it happen !!!  We need people to help handout literature on HR676  [5] and the State resolution for those days.

b) NJ: One Plan, One Nation state-wide single payer conference:

·        Sunday, May 31, 1:30 PM to 6 PM (times may change a little).  

Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, NJ

This will be the biggest single-payer event yet in New Jersey.

The Presbyterian Church (USA), when it endorsed single-payer national health insurance, provided $2000 mini-grants for ten regional workshops to take place all over the US where people can learn about single-payer national health insurance, and provide an opportunity for them to get involved in this issue. This is one of them. All are welcome, and many NJ elected officials will be asked to attend and support HR 676.

HOLD THE DATE. Plan to be in Princeton on May 31. Want to Help? We need people to help man a PDA table at the conference. We'll take a van or a bus if enough folks want to go!

c) We have tickets available for a Healthcare Fund Raiser, a Spaghetti Dinner,  to be held Friday, April 24, 2009, 6-9 PM at the Collingswood Presbyterian Church, Fern and Maple Aves. Tickets are $20. We will have them available at the meeting.

I just took action on a First Amendment issue that I find very important.

In an unprecedented action, the ANSWER Coalition received citations fining the
organization $7,000 for the placement of posters announcing the March 21st March
on the Pentagon. Just 18 months ago, the DC government slapped ANSWER with
$55,000 in fines for anti-war posters that were legally affixed. Now they are at
it again, trying to effectively eliminate ANSWER's and any group's ability to
engage in postering for Free Speech protected activities. Many thousands of
dollars in additional fines are expected in the coming days. The  posters are
legal and conform to city regulations.

Take a moment to write a letter demanding that the DC government immediately
lift and stop all fines imposed on the antiwar movement!

TAKE ACTION : Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing to decide whether nominee Eric Holder should be confirmed as the new Attorney General. While Holder's public statements suggest he would be a marked improvement over Alberto Gonzales and Michael Mukasey, it is critical that the American public be certain that our nation's chief lawyer has an unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law.

Please call the Senate Judiciary Committee members today and tell them that we need Eric Holder to make a clear statement against torture and racial profiling. Phone numbers are provided above. It will only take a few minutes to urge them to ask these two critical questions:

  1. Are you, unlike your predecessor, willing to acknowledge under oath what U.S. military and civilian courts have recognized for over 100 years: that waterboarding is torture and therefore criminal? If so, will you fulfill your duty to ensure that justice and the rule of law apply to all by appointing a Special Prosecutor to investigate and prosecute those who have used, ordered, and authorized the use of waterboarding and other forms of torture?

2 .The most recent Attorney General's Guidelines for Domestic FBI Operations allow the FBI to begin an assessment without indication that a crime has been committed or is being planned. These guidelines grant the FBI authority to investigate individuals solely on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, or political belief, opening the door for racial profiling and persecution of political dissidents. As Attorney General, would you revoke these guidelines and communicate clearly to the public and to the FBI that no domestic investigations shall be performed without any indication of criminal activity?

The Leadership Conference for Guaranteed Healthcare--National Single Payer Coalition Steering Committee wishes to thank everyone who made the December 22nd call-in day a huge success. By 11:00 a.m. that day, Senator Kennedy's office reported to have already received over 1000 phone calls! Many congressional offices across the country were flooded with the message to support HR 676 and stop Massachusetts style healthcare reform from being used as a national model.  We will escalate our efforts for the call-in action on January 15   ( http://capwiz.com/pdamerica/callalert/index.tt?alertid=12422551&PROCESS=Call+Now )  by targeting the Washington DC offices.

HR 676 has been reintroduced in the 111th Congress—with the same bill number, and there are 86 cosponsors of HR 676 from the 110th Congress who have been sworn into the 111th session. This number will quickly grow because of the extensive lobby efforts already in motion. Our goal is to effectively double the number of cosponsors in the House by making sure elected officials hear from their constituents to cosponsor HR 676 again, and help find new co-sponsors.

Please urge your Congress member to attend the HR 676 briefing on January 28th from 3-5:00 p.m. in the halls of Congress.

In addition, encourage your Senators to sponsor companion legislation to HR 676 in the Senate.

Inauguration Actions

Locally : We have 5000 flyers supporting HR 676 to hand out ! We are looking for volunteers to help pass out flyers in Philly on Saturday and also Tuesday at the Speed line stations !

 

Saturday : Obama to begin inaugural train trip in Phila.

There is planned a Rally at 9:00am at the William Way Center, 1315 Spruce St then a

To Spend An Educational & Enlightening Day

Your organization, along with more than 30 others, will have the opportunity to have a table at the park to lay out your particular concerns and/or illustrate one of Kucinich's articles of impeachment against Bush.  

Goals for the Event

  • Educate the public on the Bush administration crimes, and their lasting ramifications to our rights,
  • plus the need for Congress to push for an 11th hour impeachment.  
  • In addition, give the people of Philadelphia, the opportunity to sign the petition in support of the Resolution before the Philadelphia City  Council.
  • To help recruit more members to our organizations and their work.
  • To encourage other Cities and Towns to have the same type of events to build strong coalitions to counter the fascist movement in our government.

Theme/Focus of the Event

  • To have participating organizations  depict certain Articles of the Resolution presented by Dennis Kucinich on June 9, 2008 on the floor of Congress, as a detailed explanation of the action/crime spelled out in that  resolution ,and what resulted from that crime, and its long-lasting effect on our democracy.
OR
  • For other groups who do not support impeachment, we would like for them to use their table to display materials expressing their issues of concern, reflecting the pain the Bush administration has caused over the past 8 years to their cause.

There is a growing number of people of conscience, who know they must do something to diminish the legacy of Bush/Cheney. They know that voting in a new leader will do nothing to erase the damage done by the current administration, nor from future administrations expanding their powers based on the actions of this administration.

 

Philadelphia is the 6th largest city in the country, consisting largely of a progressive population making it a perfect location to follow the examples set forth by scores of municipalities and cities across America, who`ve already enacted resolutions for impeachment of Bush/Cheney. Besides Philly is were the foundation of our government was formed, a fact the residents hold dear and it should reclaim its place in history by demanding restoration to the Bill of Rights. Currently, a resolution before City Council concerns this just demand.

The day's events will culminate in a discussion between our

Renowned Guest Speakers and Philadelphia City Council

in an effort to persuade them to pass the resolution before them.

If tonight's presidential debate takes place, an Irish bar in Center City will be in the limelight, hosting Gov. Sarah Palin at a pre-debate party. The Irish Pub, 2007 Walnut St., Phila, will open its doors at 5 p.m. to receive ticketed guests for the private function.

Palin is expected to arrive at the pub between 7 and 7:30 tonight and "cruise around," greeting people, O'Connor said. There's no special food or drink; it's just the pub's usual offerings.

Palin's expected to leave around 8:30 p.m., as the party ends, O'Connor said. The pub will reopen to the public at 9 p.m., the debate's scheduled start time.

On Tuesday morning, September 23, 7:30am, at the front of the National Archives Building on Constitution Ave. in Washington, D.C., five military veterans will risk arrest as they climb a 9-foot retaining fence and occupy a 35-foot high ledge to raise a 22x8 foot banner stating, “DEFEND OUR CONSTITUTION.  ARREST BUSH AND CHENEY: WAR CRIMINALS!”   

The group has declared its intention to stay on the ledge, fasting for 24 hours “in remembrance of those who have perished and those still suffering from the crimes of the Bush administration,” according to a written statement.  With a portable PA system, they will broadcast recorded statements from prominent Americans for the impeachment and/or arrest of George W. Bush and Richard Cheney.  “Citizens Arrest Warrants” will be distributed to people waiting in line to enter the National Archives.

The veterans emphasized they are taking this action because “Bush and Cheney’s serial abuse of the Law of the Land clearly marks them as domestic enemies of the Constitution…they have illegally invaded and occupied Iraq, deliberately destroyed civilian infrastructure, authorized torture, and unlawfully detained prisoners.  These actions clearly mark them as war criminals…accountability extends beyond impeachment to prosecution for war crimes even after their terms of office expire.”

“We take this action as a last resort,” their statement added.  “For years we have pursued every avenue open to good, vigilant citizens to bring these men to justice, to re-establish the rule of law, and to restore the balance of power described in our Constitution.  We are not disturbing the peace; we are attempting to restore the peace.  We are not conducting ourselves in a disorderly manner; our action is well-ordered and well-considered.  We are not trespassing; we have come to the home of our Constitution to honor our oath to defend it.”

Friday, September 26  :   Bird Dogging Alert ! Sarah Palin at Irish Pub for tonight's debate

If tonight's presidential debate takes place, an Irish bar in Center City will be in the limelight, hosting Gov. Sarah Palin at a pre-debate party. The Irish Pub, 2007 Walnut St., Phila, will open its doors at 5 p.m. to receive ticketed guests for the private function.

Palin is expected to arrive at the pub between 7 and 7:30 tonight and "cruise around," greeting people, O'Connor said. There's no special food or drink; it's just the pub's usual offerings.

Palin's expected to leave around 8:30 p.m., as the party ends, O'Connor said. The pub will reopen to the public at 9 p.m., the debate's scheduled start time.

The plan proposed by President Bush and Secretary Paulson for a $700 billion bailout of Wall Street is difficult for most people to comprehend. At NPP, we've been crunching the numbers and offer this analysis of what $700 billion means to taxpayers.

A healthy and productive economy requires substantial investment in affordable housing, health care, education and renewable energy. Taxpayers in the United States will be required to pay $700 billion for the Wall Street bailout. They should also know that for the same amount of money, they could secure the following:

·         51.6 million people with health care for four years OR

·         181.2 million homes with renewable electricity for four years OR

·         2.9 million elementary school teachers for four years OR

·         27 million four-year scholarships for university students

$700 billion is more than what is currently allocated for the U.S. war in Iraq. This amount would allow us to repair all of our nations 77,000 deteriorated bridges and still have $519 billion to spend; or it would allow us to rebuild all of our nations 33,000 deteriorating schools and still have $664 billion to spend. On Tuesday morning, September 23, 7:30am, at the front of the National Archives Building on Constitution Ave. in Washington, D.C., five military veterans will risk arrest as they climb a 9-foot retaining fence and occupy a 35-foot high ledge to raise a 22x8 foot banner stating, “DEFEND OUR CONSTITUTION.  ARREST BUSH AND CHENEY: WAR CRIMINALS!”   

The group has declared its intention to stay on the ledge, fasting for 24 hours “in remembrance of those who have perished and those still suffering from the crimes of the Bush administration,” according to a written statement.  With a portable PA system, they will broadcast recorded statements from prominent Americans for the impeachment and/or arrest of George W. Bush and Richard Cheney.  “Citizens Arrest Warrants” will be distributed to people waiting in line to enter the National Archives.

The veterans emphasized they are taking this action because “Bush and Cheney’s serial abuse of the Law of the Land clearly marks them as domestic enemies of the Constitution…they have illegally invaded and occupied Iraq, deliberately destroyed civilian infrastructure, authorized torture, and unlawfully detained prisoners.  These actions clearly mark them as war criminals…accountability extends beyond impeachment to prosecution for war crimes even after their terms of office expire.”

“We take this action as a last resort,” their statement added.  “For years we have pursued every avenue open to good, vigilant citizens to bring these men to justice, to re-establish the rule of law, and to restore the balance of power described in our Constitution.  We are not disturbing the peace; we are attempting to restore the peace.  We are not conducting ourselves in a disorderly manner; our action is well-ordered and well-considered.  We are not trespassing; we have come to the home of our Constitution to honor our oath to defend it.”

The Bush Administration's National Park Service has re-written its regulations in response to the court ruling. Again, the regulations set aside prime swaths of the Inaugural Parade route for the exclusive use of the corporate donor friends of the incoming administration. The period for public comment closes in a few days, September 22, - so act now !

We have two goals for this event:

1) educate the public on the Bush administration crimes, and their lasting ramifications to our rights, plus the need for Congress to push for an 11th hour impeachment.

2) In addition, give people of Philadelphia, the opportunity to sign the petition in support of a resolution before the Philadelphia City Council.
 
The theme/focus, of the event, is for participating activist organizations

  • to depict certain Articles of the Resolution presented by Dennis Kucinich on June 9, 2008 on the floor of Congress, as a detailed explanation of the action/crime spelled out in that resolution, and what resulted from that crime, and its long-lasting effect on our democracy. Note: Kucinich's articles of impeachment detail many crimes, including lying about the Iraq threat, disobeying the Geneva Convention rules, torturing, spying on citizens, and inaction in response to Hurricane Katrina.
  • For other groups who do not support impeachment, we would like for them to use their table to display materials expressing their issues of concern, reflecting the pain the Bush administration has caused over the past 8 years to their cause.
  • The day's events will culminate in a discussion between our renowned guest speakers and Philadelphia City Council in an effort to persuade them to pass the resolution before them.
     
    Philadelphia is the 6th largest city in the country, consisting largely of a progressive population making it a perfect location to follow the examples set forth by scores of municipalities and cities across America, who've already enacted resolutions for impeachment of Bush/Cheney... Besides Philly is where the foundation of our government was formed, a fact the residents hold dear and it should reclaim its place in history by demanding restoration to the Bill of Rights by impeaching Bush and Cheney. Currently, a resolution before City Council concerns this just demand.
     
    There is a growing number of people of conscience, who know they must do something to diminish the legacy of Bush/Cheney. They know that voting in a new leader will do nothing to erase the damage done by the current administration, nor from future administrations expanding their powers based on the actions of this administration.
     
    Your organization, along with more than 30 others, will have the opportunity to have a table at the park to lay out your particular concerns and/or illustrate one of Kucinich's articles of impeachment against Bush.
     
    Informative activities, food, and music, in addition to rousing speeches, will draw people to this event and past your table.

We need your help!!!!

We aim to publish 5 large ads in the Washington Post on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday — September 8, 10, 11, 12 — and a half-page ad on Sunday, September 14th.

Attached below are 2 large ads for weekday publication, and one half-page ad for Sunday publication.

This is part of a national campaign we're calling  "COUNTDOWN TO IMPEACHMENT!"

Nobody needs to tell you the magnitude of the threat Bush-Cheney present.

 Do not make the mistake of thinking that George W. Bush is a lame duck. He is going full speed ahead with his agenda, unhampered by anything so trivial as worrying about reelection.  The following is a  list of what Bush has done in the past couple of weeks!

  • Gutted environmental protection by taking EPA scientists out of the loop.
  • Pushed for offshore oil drilling
  • Made it easier for the FBI to investigate without a warrant.
  • Proposed making oral contraceptives harder to obtain. (& classifying them as abortion!)
  • Gotten obviously drunk at the China Olympics, embarrassing the US and insulting the Chinese.
  • Started a proxy war with Russia via the US client nation of Georgia
  • Signed an agreement to place missile defense in Poland, evoking a Russian threat against Poland.
  • Canceled joint military exercises with Russia, essentially restarting the Cold War with the second nuclear superpower.
  • Sent a huge armada to blockade Iran, which could start WW III.

We believe our ads will help bring enough pressure to move the House Judiciary Committee to begin impeachment proceeding in earnest — before they attack Iran — and  with  the help of thousands of citizens phoning the committee members, we can get movement by September 26th.

The weekday ads will measure 12" wide x 18" high, and the Sunday ad will measure 12" wide x 10.5" high.

The stakes are steep for everyone on earth.

We ask you for two actions. The first is to donate as much as you can to help our ads publish.

The second is to get your help in spreading the word to help us get the money, both to your circle of friends and to every web site you can. If you can hook us up with any media, we'll get someone nearby to contact them.

If you operate a web site or an organization we ask you to endorse our effort and to tell everyone on your email list about our campaign. If you can't endorse because of a policy against that level of action, then at least forward this to your members so they can help us.

The US House of Representatives is considering a new resolution,1 that would effectively demand a blockade against Iran - an act that would be widely seen as an act of war and would invite Iranian retaliation, possibly leading us into a shooting war.

Dr. Robert M. Bowman, Lt. Col., USAF, ret. is President of the Institute for Space and Security Studies, Executive Vice President of Millennium III Corporation, and retired Presiding Archbishop of the United Catholic Church.  The recipient of the Eisenhower Medal, the George F. Kennan Peace Prize, the President's Medal of Veterans for Peace, the Republic Aviation Airpower Award, the Society of American Military Engineers' ROTC Medal of Merit (twice), the Air Medal with five oak leaf clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal, and numerous other awards, he is one of the country's foremost authorities on national security.

 

Colonel Bowman directed all the DoD “Star Wars” programs under presidents Ford and Carter.  He has been an executive in both government and industry, and has chaired 8 major international conferences.  Professor Bowman taught at 5 colleges and universities, serving as Department Head and Assistant Dean.  His Ph.D. is in Aeronautics and Nuclear Engineering from Caltech.  He has lectured at the National War College, the United Nations, Congressional Caucuses, the Academies of Science of six nations, and the House of Lords.

 

Usually Dr. Bowman speaking fee is several thousand dollars, so we are very fortunate he has agreed to stop in South Jersey on his way to New York for another speaking engagement. Please show him that the Delaware Valley is worthy of this honor !!!!!!

The Help America Vote Act of 2002 (HAVA), Section 301(a)(5), requires that the vote-counting error rate of each voting system used in federal elections must comply with the 2002 Voluntary Voting Systems Standards. UPDATE, May 5, 2008. It has come to our attention that the 1/500,000 error rate previously quoted here applies to the testing process. For operation in an election, the allowable error rate is 1 error in 10,000,000 ballot lines (0.00001%).

Here are some examples of voting system error rates logged in elections since HAVA was enacted, yet no federal agency has taken action to stop the use of these systems. In fact, all these systems are still in use in the United States.

Many other news stories tell of equally shocking error rates. Though we have not calculated the error rate per ballot line (choice on the ballot), it's clear that these miscounts are far beyond the legal limit of one error in 10,000,000 ballot choices.

Back On Wed April 4th,2007 a group consisting of members from  Citizen Action, Sacred Heart, S.J. United for Peace and Justice and PDA/DFA Progressive Democracy South Jersey  met with Rob Andrews in his Haddon Twp. office concerning his stand on the Iraq War.

 

During the time we were there , never once did he say he made a mistake, and never once said , he was sorry for the loss of life caused by his mistake.Never during the course of the conversation,did he mention having a withdrawal from Iraq, so claimed by Andrews in this article: http://www.nj.com/news/ledger/jersey/index.ssf?/base/news-10/1209011789280150.xml&coll=1

 

As usual , Rob was pleasant enough but very guarded with his answers. There were a couple of things he did promise that day:

 

1. He wouldn't vote for any more funding of the war, unless to remove the troops from Iraq. Guess What !!!

2.  We requested for him to sign onto H.J.Res 14, legislation calling for the president to seek authorization from Congress for a preemptive strike on Iran. Instead signed onto DeFazio’s bill and then later voted against it.

 

3. Rob agreed to attend a Town Hall Forum for all constituents from the 1st District to attend. That day, Eve Weissman, from Citizen Action, agreed  to work with Rob's office to arrange the Forum to be held at Sacred Heart Church. After several months, of cancellations, and postponements, it was evident Rob had no intention of attending a forum. She gave up by the end of September, totally discouraged.

Moving Forward  - Then in early November the South Jersey HealthCare for All Coalition contacted Rob's office to arrange a meeting to discuss his stand on Single Payer Health Care during Congress' break November 23 – 28 . The usual run around pursued, no returned calls, no definite date, so we planned a protest in front of his office for December 8 and proceeded to send letters to the local papers why we were going to be protesting. As soon as Rob saw the articles in Haddon Herald and Courier Post, his office was on the phone, setting up an appointment. We met with Rob on December 17. Again lots of promises from him to contact and talk to John Conyers, and if Conyers was able to answer the few questions , he felt needed more clarification, he would sign onto HR676. Currently there are 90 co-sponsors.....but guess what ??? Check it out .....his name is not there. 

 

Now here is another kicker , after numerous attempts by others over the past year, even after Eve Weissman, gave up, Rob still hasn’t had  a Town Hall Forum with his own constituents in the 1st District.  Yet He Has Scheduled 3  in other Areas ?????????? Do you think he is afraid to face those who really know him and what he stands for ?  And he calls on Lautenberg to debate, when he can't even answer a few questions from those who put him in office????

 Rob Andrews was co-author of the Iraq war resolution and cheerleader-in-chief of Bush's Iraq War.  http://www.house.gov/andrews/pressarchive/92902oped.html Read for yourself, how he boasts being chosen by Bush to draft the resolution and then recruit members of Congress to sign on, through the use of fear mongering. With him being on the intelligence committee he should have known there was enough evidence available to prove the Bush administration wrong.

We can't afford more of George Bush and Rob Andrews' wars.  Show up on Saturday at the  UAW Hall, 56 Vineyard Ave, Edison, NJ and let Rob Andrews know – stop endless war and support peace, justice, and human rights !!!

Still not convinced ?????

Rob's Days as Bush Backer
 
Remember too, Rob pushed hard in 2000 and 2005 for the Bankruptcy Act , that has led to the current situation of foreclosures. Rob has supported some of the worse legislation to be passed in this country, the Patriot Act, Military Commissions Act  and the list goes on.
 
Please keep in mind who is backing Rob.......a political machine who advocates Pay to Play and Eminent Domain Abuse....... important issues, groups in South Jersey have been fighting hard to change...... so voting for him would be a slap in the face to many who have been working for the betterment of all .
