FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Is Nero Wolfe really cancelled?
A: Yes. We're not happy about it but A&E did cancel it though part of our
efforts are focused on making sure they show repeats and an occasional Nero
Wolfe marathon.

Q: Why did A&E cancel the show?
A: Only they can tell you for sure. They'll tell you it was very costly and
didn't do well enough in the ratings. Those things certainly may have come into
play but so might other issues -- their overall ratings as a network were down,
costs for the increased number of made-for-TV events they were committed too
were going up, the head of programming who'd been a great supporter of the show
was fired and a clean sweep was probably involved.

Q: What are we - the Pfui Pfighters - doing about it?
A: We're writing, faxing and calling.

Q: Who are we writing, faxing and calling?
A: Lots of places:

    1) A&E to make sure we get to see encore presentations, possibly more videos,
soundtracks and merchandise made available for purchase,

    2) Bantam Books to make sure they know that even though the show is cancelled
there is still an even growing interest in the Nero Wolfe books so they should
continue to make them available and even expand their title list,

    3) the producers - Jaffe Braunstein Films LTD and Timothy Hutton - to tell
them how much we love the show and to show our support to them (and to give them
piles and piles of mail to show off should other networks be interested),

    4) the media -- keeping the show in the news and not letting it slip into the
"Abyss of Shows Gone By" means that it's more likely someone will pick it up or
make a TV movie or two.

Q: What about emailing?
A: Yes, you CAN email but actual letters and postcards and faxes make MUCH more
of an impact.

Q: What are the addresses I should use?
A: We have gathered quite an impressive array of information and put it in the
files section of the site for people to use. You can find them at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Pfight/files/. In there we have folders with
address lists, letterhead, stickers and fax cover sheets to download, sample
letters and other things that might help. We also have files related to the show
itself: FAQs about the music, a list of texts - hours of fun.

Q: But I want to start now! What are the addresses I can use?
A: OK, here's the jump start for you but don't forget to check out everything
else.

1) To reach the producers for a show of support, you can use either one or both
of the following:
- Jaffe/Braunstein Films * 12301 Wilshire Blvd Suite 110 * Los Angeles, CA 90025
- Timothy Hutton * c/o Judy Hoffland * 9465 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 820 * Beverly
Hills, CA 90212

2) To reach Bantam publishers who are currently stocking bookstores
with reprints, you can use: Bantam Crimeline * 1540 Broadway * NYC, NY 10036 *
bdpublicity@...

3) To reach A&E (I know they canceled it but we want more showings, soundtracks,
videos, etc) use:
- Abbe Raven, General Manager and Executive Vice President * A&E Television *
235 E. 45th St. * New York, NY 10017

Q: What about the actor's home address?
A: No, we don't post those and we don't encourage members to use them. There are
appropriate ways to reach the cast - through their agents and we provide that
information as well get it. Anyone posting such information will be warned and
the message deleted. If there is a second infraction, the poster will be banned
for a period of time.

This is just the tip of the iceberg; keep your eye on the website
for much more in the coming months, including – are you ready for
this? In addition to the "Missing Minutes" (explained on the WP
website) news, it turns out that the Season Two shows produced as +/-
45 minutes for A&E were extended to +/- 90 minutes to suit the
needs of the overseas purchaser/distributor.

Yo, Paul O'Donnell in the UK and Alex in Slovakia: You must not have
realized it, nor did other Pfighters from abroad, but your "Poison a
la Carte," "Before I Die," "The Next Witness," and "Immune to
Murder" are *twice as long* as ours.

So, after nearly three and a half years of suffering "Nero Wolfe"
withdrawal symptoms, how exciting to discover that there are
actually about three and a half more hours of "Nero Wolfe" out there!

Nuts! '"Pfui" is right!' Thank you so much for sharing this,
peephole; ignorance may be bliss, but seeing the screenshots is
better, and (note to distributors:) seeing the WHOLE episodes would
be ecstasy!

I see the information about several minutes and even scenes being
available only overseas. Where, though, is there any indication of
some episodes having up to 45 extra minutes? Is it possible there is
some confusion about some episodes being linked together and released
in that fashion?

I'm just trying to figure out how you would film a 90 minute episode
and be able to cut out half of it while retaining something that makes
sense. Talk about a writing and editing nightmare.

Of course, if such episodes do exist, I'd buy them once more.
Hopefully they won't be dubbed...

I didn't..no! Though I was aware that season one was aired on the BBC
in 16:9 widescreen. I have to admit that I have only seen a couple on
TV, as I bought the DVD box sets and so I never needed to watch the TV
broadcasts.

Nope, there's no longer any confusion about the episodes being
linked together -- LOL, that's what's had us all confused from the
beginning. It's like this:

A&E's Season One 45-minute episodes were in fact linked and aired
under different titles overseas, e.g., "Eeny" + "Disguise" = "Wolfe
Goes Out." However, while the same thing was intended for the
Season Two 45-minute episodes, *it didn't happen* because Pearson
(which is now Fremantle), the overseas distributor, preferred to
purchase four longer single episodes than four sets of two linked
episodes.

Therefore, "Poison" + "Corny" = "In Bad Taste" didn't happen;
overseas viewers got 90 minutes of pure "Poison," not a kernel of
corn in it. The other Extended Episodes were "The Next
Witness," "Before I Die," and "Immune"; overseas viewers didn't see
their intended pairs -- "Die Like a Dog," "Help Wanted Male,"
and "Cop Killer."

So, yes, there are two completely different things going on here:
The Missing Minutes, i.e., the scenes cut from all (we think) the
original episodes for A&E's commercials (the Moron network takes
more commercial time away from programming than the average, BTW);
and the four Extended Episodes from Season Two.

From what I've learned, and as you can tell on the WP website, the
Missing Minutes scenes, while short in duration, contributed
importantly to the shows. For example, in the cut version of "Eeny"
aired on A&E, you see Archie rushing to the assistance of Fritz, who
is staggering to answer the door; unless the Stout story is fresh in
your mind, you don't know *why* Fritz is staggering because you
don't see the "pie-eyed" in the kitchen scene that precedes it. And
the Priscilla Eads in the Office scenes (the shots aren't very clear
because the source was of poor quality).

Oh, and another that will appear on the Website when it's
available: Remember how fans complained about "The Motherhunt"
lacking Stout's final chapter, Archie and Fritz at breakfast
discussing his relationship with Lucy Valdon and Wolfe's fears of
same? Guess what, we've been told that it's *not* lacking in the
overseas version.

It's my understanding that the extensions in the four Extended
Episodes consist primarily of "invented," scenes. But if these are
anywhere near the caliber of most of the other invented scenes in
the series -- Mrs. Cramer, the Fritz and Wolfe scene at the
conclusion of "Poison," the card and Flamingo scenes, etc. --
they'll be good enough for me and, I think, most fans.

[There's nothing on display on the WP website from the Extended
Episodes or from most of the Missing Minutes episodes because
there's no more to display at the moment, but there definitely will
be.]

I wouldn't have expected A&E to purchase and reproduce the episodes
produced specially for Fremantle, but they could have at least
included their pricey DVDs the Missing Minutes that they had cut for
commercials, damn them!

I was only recently watching 'Before I Die' and I could almost swear
it really was 90 rather than 45 minutes long. I've recorded the show
so I can check this when I get back home next week. And I was wondering
why I've never been able to see or record 'Cop Killer' on Slovak or
Czech TV... Are you saying we got a double portion of 'Before I Die'
in exchange for 'Cop Killer'? What a mess!

You're half-right, Alex; you almost certainly have a double portion
of "Before I Die" but technically, that's in exchange for the "Help
Wanted, Male" you didn't get (they were to be paired under the
title, "Threat of Death").

I remember that you posted sometime this Summer about the scene
where Wolfe dances with Beulah Page in "BID." People must have
thought you'd been drinking or something, because most of us never
had the chance to watch that scene -- it's not in the A&E version.

The "Cop Killer" that you didn't get should have been in exchange
for a double portion of "Immune." But that pair is the only one for
which we don't have a 'combination' title, and I don't recall any
fans abroad reporting on their version of "Immune," so if you
recorded it and can provide some info, that would be helpful.

You should have a double portion of "The Next Witness," too, in lieu
of its intended pair, "Die Like a Dog."

But LOL, *you're* complaining? *We're* complaining! Because
although you may not yet have the DVDS, which are only in Region One
format and much more expensive and difficult to buy abroad, you know
you'll get them eventually. And then you'll have it all. But I
doubt there's much hope that the overseas versions will be
reproduced on DVD.

It's great to finally have found out what all the confusion was about.
I have often wondered why the BBC broadcasted Nero Wolfe in such a
random order (compared to the A&E episode list I plucked from the net).
This was not because they didn't care in which order they broadcasted
the series, but because they didn't have certain episodes.
In one way we overseas viewers are lucky to have seen longer versions
of certain episodes, but we also had to miss out on 4 episodes that the
US/Canadian viewers did see.
Thanks for sorting it out!

Maybe you should ask BBC why 2 movies of those you missed weren't aired
in the same evening. in Italy and other Europe countries other series
(CSI, Desperate H, Grey's anatomy...) are often broadcasted with 2
paired episodes....

I was abroad last week, walking the beaches of Denmark trying to
peer over the North Sea to see Scotland (which cannot be done),
but now I'm back, have just checked my video collection and you're
absolutely right! I have 90-minute versions of all the three stories
you mention, 'Before I Die', 'Immune to Murder', and 'The Next
Witness', and I remember how impatiently I kept waiting for 'Cop
Killer' (is that the barber shop murder?), but it simply never was
shown here.

This is a farce. How they can sell "Complete Season 1 & 2" DVDs
in the US while cutting certain episodes by half is beyond me.
I also don't understand why European audiences aren't allowed
to watch 'Cop Killer', 'Help Wanted, Male', and 'Die Like a Dog'.

Nero Wolfe can be watched in Slovakia on two channels: the Czech
branch of the Hallmark Channel, where you can choose to watch/record
the episodes in original English or dubbed in Czech; and you can watch
the series on Slovakia's state-run TV where you only get the option to
watch the episodes dubbed in Slovak language. (So I never watch those.)

Unfortunately, my 90-minute versions of all the three stories you list
are plain-old VHS recordings and I wouldn't know how to easily convert
them to the digital format and send them to you all. Seeing Wolfe dance
certainly made my eyes pop!

Indeed! Alright, we'll see whether that plain-old 90-minute VHS version
of 'Immune to Murder' can somehow, with your and others' assistance,
be converted to the digital format and made accessible to fellow
Wolfe fans across the ocean.

'30's Roadsters, Nero Wolfe- obviously a woman of taste!

I think that spammer needs to do some further market research. I don't
believe we're the target audience for a hot webcam, or whatever it was. I
believe we're probably more the viagra and discount meds set. Maybe timeshares.

Yep. Online, too, at: http://www.daedalusbooks.com/

It would be nice if they were letter-box versions, but I'm guessing they're
direct transfers of the original stand-alone tape versions.

This reminds me to ask: any updates for the DVD web page? (Link from our home
page or use http://entwold.home.att.net/NeroWolfeDVDs.htm ) It's way past time
for me to do a revision and I've got a stack of notes on things to incorporate.

I'd also like to expand references to productions other than A&E -- such as the
Italian version. Is there are source for purchase of them?

Anyone have the URLs handy for the radio disks?

A list of books on tape?

Can someone please give Lon some new "hot gossip"? The current serving is way
past tepid -- cold, congealed and incomestible.

Finally, a question: should we encourage folks to pester A&E for extended
"European" versions? Any other suggestions for the "current campaign" section,
or should we let that die off?

I prefer stuff to be posted here -- so folks can see what was already suggested
-- but if you have a real privacy jones, you can send me an email at the
following address (remove the spam traps): entwold at att dot net
