Hi, all. I wanted to share the following column, which my local paper
published on April 15 in reponse to my letter asking about Barbara
Hale's current situation. Apparently she's fighting illness but
holding her own.
I'm sure you-all know a lot of the information in this column, but
the update on Barbara was interesting. And so was the history of
Perry Mason revivals after the "Final Fadeout" in 1966 -- I didn't
know a lot of those things!
As you'll see below, various sources give different birthdates for
Barbara -- February 18 or April 18. If anyone has further
information, it will be mch appreciated.
Yours,
Tom

JOAN'S WORLD: JOAN MORRIS
'Perry Mason' actress fighting colon
cancer
Dear Joan:
Barbara Hale is, I believe, the only surviving major cast member of
the "Perry Mason" television series, which began in 1957. On Feb. 18,
she was 79 years old.
Several of my Internet pen pals share a love of the series and its
cast. One pen pal wrote that after The Seattle Times ran a column on
favorite TV secretaries, the response from readers showed Della
Street was tops!
We are wondering what Barbara Hale is up to these days.
-- Tom Rankin, Walnut Creek
Dear Tom:
Actually, it's not too late to wish Barbara a happy 78th. According
to her biography, she was born April 18, 1922, in DeKalb, Ill. No word
on what she has planned, but in the past, she's celebrated quietly at
her Los Angeles home with family and friends.
Barbara has been fighting colon cancer in recent years, but by all
accounts, she's done well.
You're correct that Barbara is the only surviving member of the
original television cast. "Perry Mason" debuted with CBS on Sept. 21,
1957, and featured Raymond Burr as the venerable defense attorney.
Also starring were William Hopper as Paul Drake, Perry's
investigator, and William Talman as the long-suffering District
Attorney Hamilton Burger. The last show ran in 1966.
In 1973, the series was revived with a new cast. Monte Markham played
Perry, Sharon Acker played Della, Albert Stratton was Paul and Harry
Guardino was Burger. The show lasted one season.
Twelve years later, in December 1985, NBC aired a reunion movie,
"Perry Mason Returns." Raymond and Barbara returned to their roles.
Barbara's son, William Katt, played investigator Paul Drake Jr., and
Perry's new courtroom nemesis was DA Jack Welles, played by Cec
Linder. The show proved as popular as ever, leading to a couple of
movies each year until 1995, the last movie airing after Burr's death.
Before becoming the dream secretary, Barbara starred in a number of
respectable movies, including "The Boy with Green Hair" in 1948 and
"Unchained" in 1955.
Dear Fellow Fans of Perry,
I have decided to delurk for a moment after I read Marcia's post. I
really enjoy the old series and tv movies, and reading all your neat posts.
But the idea of a PM movie with a current star had occurred to me.
But..... Tom Cruise as Perry Mason?!? Has Hollywood finally gone
totally out of it's mind? One would like to think that after that Godawful
tv version in the 70's, that they would realize that to most tv watchers
Perry Mason=Raymond Burr (May he rest in peace. Happy Birthday, Mr. Burr! I
wonder if he liked that episode of Biography about himself.....)
However, what with the classic series in limbo, and what with the tv
movies either only on Court TV (...which my cable company no longer carries.
Darn!), or rarely show on TBS, perhaps that's what the ESG Estate wants. A
new start with another actor who will appeal to younger, less discriminating
viewers.(" Black and
White TV? Yuck!") The fans with memories of the original series and original
cast be damned!
Tell me I'm wrong, folks, that we'll see the series back on tv again
in the near future. Sure, I'm glad Columbia House is still selling them and
now Ironside. But we need to have the show still on the air to attract new
fans.
Oh well. Sorry for the outburst. Lurking shield back up.....
Have a great week and a wonderful Memorial Day!
I watched the latest PM tape I have gotten from Columbia House last
night, and I have to agree that Raymond Burr is the consumate Perry.
Monte Markham played the role in the 70's series you mentioned. I like
Monte, and did watch it, but it couldn't live up to the predecessor.
I also believe in the "too soon" adage on some things. For instance,
remember when James Brolin played Gable? It was too soon, and it
flopped. I feel the same way about the recent John Denver movie. It
was too soon to see it. We need some time to move on. This Linda
McCartney movie is too soon.
I also feel that sometimes they can do good things with a new version of
something without violating the integrity of the old. "The Fugitive"
proved that. Harrison Ford did a good job, and it was an engaging
script. I was probably more disappointed at how they handled the Gerard
character more than anything else.
Perry Mason is a wonderful character, and I do feel that at some point,
if they use the right performer with the right script, a good job could
be done. Robert Urich is a very good actor, and he might be able to
pull it off. I'd be more concerned with how loyal they are to the
intent of the original, like the relationships between Perry and Della,
and Perry and Hamilton. I don't see Tom Cruise as Perry Mason without
changing all of the essence of Perry. Besides, he's already done the
court thing a couple of times.

Tom Cruise as Perry Mason? Please, you must be joking - that would
be some comedown. I can't think of any
other actor who could possibly replace Raymond Burr in the minds of
his fans. I remember sometime in the
70's they came out with "The New Adventures of Perry Mason" TV series
with some guy named Monte Markham playing
Mason and it was terrible. Needless to say, it didn't last too long.
Give me Burr any day of the week!!
Debbie
Tom Cruise as Perry Mason?????
OH MY GOD NOOOOOOO
I like Tom Cruise, but not as Perry Mason
it would not be the same, hell, it wouldn't
even be close.
John
Hey, yall, well, I saw "Gladiator" last week as did one bozillion
others and I thought it was a fine movie and Russell Crowe a fine
actor and then this weekend I rented "The Insider" which I'd never
quite gotten around to seeing in the theatre and Russell Crowe was in
it and he was great (well, of course; he got nominated for a best
actor Oscar for that role) and at any rate his performance in "The
Insider" kept reminding me of someone and I finally just figured it
out: his character in "The Insider" he reminds me of Raymond Burr in
"Rear Window!!!!!!!!!
As a matter of fact, Russell Crowe has a very fugitive yet strong
resemblance to Raymond Burr in general (they're both big smokers, big
men, from some English commonwealth-type-of-nation, chameleon-like,
sexy rough-voiced, at home in any century, GREAT character actors).
Imagine Russell Crowe in remakes of Raymond Burr roles! "Bride of
Vengeance"! "Gorilla at Large"! "Godzilla" (the real one)! mmmmmm.
Russell Crowe as Robert Ironside!!!!!!!!!!!
Russell Crowe as Perry versus Bruce Willis as Hamilton!!!!!!
Well, *I* like the idea.
Hey, changing the subject, Mystery Science Theatre 3000 spoofed a
film
called "The Deadly Mantis" a couple of years ago. William (*sigh*)
Hopper is in it, and on the OFFICIAL MST3K site, the MST3K ladies
want
to go on the record as saying William Hopper is *FINE*.
We're very lucky to have Perry Mason in our world.
yrs.

HI Tom,
Welcome to the list, which unfortunately is a bit on the quiet side.
I wish our WB carried PM, but it must be a local thing. Since TBS
stopped airing PM, I've begun subscribing to the Columbia House series,
which actually is better anyway since TBS edited out several minutes
worth of the show.
I've always enjoyed Perry, having been intrigued with the culprit always
being the last person I'd ever suspect and also with the Perry-Della
thing. I watched PM as a child when it originally aired, but now that
I'm older I get such a kick out of the little nuances and subtleties,
like those between Perry and Hamilton. It's great fun!
Thanks for joining, and hopefully the list will pick up!

Hello! I'm new to the group. Name is Tom. About Perry Mason airings,
the WB has resumed five days a week after almost a year of no PM
episodes! They did it almost exactly when TBS discontinued; wonder if
there was any connection? Don't know if WB airs them nationwide, but
presumably.... Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, the schedule is 10
a.m. weekdays. Often, though not always, there is another one on WB
at
3 a.m. Pacific time.
About favorite episodes, I'd have to say Sausalito Sunrise, in which
Paul is driving an 18-wheeler and fends off hijackers. Believe the
episode is adapted Gardner's Case of the Moth-Eaten Mink.
Glad to be here,
Tom

Thank you for the welcome Marcia. I don't think
there was any one thing that I like best about
the show. I liked it all. All the guest actors and
actresses were always right for the parts, and all
the regular cast acted the same no matter what was
happening. I guess I would have to say that it was
a really well made show.
John
I am new to the list and want to say hello to all
the members. Perry Mason is my favorite TV show
and I hope that there is some discussion on this
list.
John
I wrote TV Land about Perry but there was response was basically a no
comment one at this point. They do respond to email though, so if they
have it, fan opinions would mean something. I miss my TBS Perry fix,
cut as they were.
I don't know that I have a favorite single episode. I love the final
episode because of all "extras" and such being real crew, and the last
scene is great.

in 1949 so I've loved PM for a long time.)
Is there a Perry Mason website so we can refresh
ourselves on the particular episodes? That way,
I could remember particular eps!
glad to be here,
Miss Sunbeam
p.s. does anybody love the "Perry Mason" theme music
as
much as I do?

Well, I guess 2 of my favorites are TCOT Weary Watchdog and TCOT Borrowed
Baby. I really like all of them, though. I have all of the tapes that
Columbia House has sold. Unfortunately, only about 80 episodes. I hope
someday they will start selling more.
I've heard rumors that possibly another station now has the rights to Perry
Mason. I'm not sure which one, possibly TV Land.
Do you have any favorite episodes?

HI Cindy,
I've never read the books so can't really discuss those, but I love the
series and the tv movies and would love to talk about them. It's
heartbreaking that TBS has removed PM from their lineup. Our list is in
its infancy, but I hope it grows and becomes a source of some good and
fun discussions.

Hi, all. I just joined this list and am looking forward to talking to you all
about Perry Mason. I have loved the books, TV series, and the TV movies.
Looking forward to some great discussions.

Merry Christmas everyone! Did anyone see the color episode of Perry
that aired last night? I'm sure I saw it originally, but I don't
actually recall it, but it sure was different. Somehow, while the tv
movies seem fine in color, watching Perry, Della and Hamilton battle it
out back in the 60's in color seemed to lose something.
Anywho -- have a colorful holiday weekend!

Dear Friends,
One of my new "paid to surf" type toys gives you a point for reading
little quips every now and then, and just now one popped up that I
believe in so totally, and felt compelled to make it a part of a holiday
email.
In life we always talk about our priorities, and how we wish we had time
for this or that. In the process, we often let friendships slide or
fade away, or let things we love go unattended to. It's sad, actually,
because our world is one full of choices and we make those choices each
and every day we take another breath.
Anywho .... a Merry Christmas to all and for the new year may we all do
more than simply remember this simple thought -- may we live by it:
You will never have time for anything.
If you want time, you must make it.
Make time for those you love and care for, and for those things which
are important to you. You do have control!
Happy New Millenium!

Hi there,
My name is Marcia, and I began this list over the holidays. We are new
so the two of you out there are the originals! The reason I made the
list is that I'm really enjoying watching Perry Mason again on TBS when
I can. I've always enjoyed the series, and watched it regularly as a
child. Recently, I've had the urge to be able to share about the show
with others....even if only to say "wasn't the look on Burger's face
hysterical when Perry said ...."
I was happy to see another list available for Perry fans, and I joined
it, but was disappointed that moderation meant no one ever said
anything, except the list owner who sent out information on the shows
being aired. Thus, this list exists. I hope you two "originals" will
help get us off on the right track. Feel free to talk about the series
and the characters. Are you watching Perry on TBS? Do you subscribe to
the Columbia House series?
Anywho -- thanks for joining, and I hope we all have a great time with
Perry!
