Yes, there was some editing in the Collision Course portion of Journey. I
think they cut some scenes with Dr. Russel and Alan when she was begining to
form her opinion that he had radiation sickness.

Also, I think I remember that Alan had a vision of the old lady and they
faded to commercial on Journey but on the actual episode Alan lifts the vail
and it is revealed it was Dr. Russel in the room all the time.

I think that War Games is for the most part, complete on Alien Attack

In an item titled "Darth Vader Goes Home" at the IMDb today (listed as a
link from the right side of the front page), he has been released from the
hospital, that the doctors are still baffled as to what he had and have
ordered him to have complete rest for the time being. He is thanking those
who sent cards and letters, and has lost 28 pounds, but is "raring to get

Subject: Items Noticed in Antique Store
dwelle@...

It might be interesting to note that besides the increasingly copious
listings for "Space 1999" material on eBay, that some occasional items do
show up in antique malls where collectibles are often sold as well.

Recently, I saw a lunchbox that appears to be nearly mint with Thermos for
$70 (!). Too pricey and not of much interest for me other than seeing it.
On one side, it had a "reinterpretation" of "Dragon's Domain," with the
dragon holding Helena up in the air with one arm while Koenig came at it
with a laser (IIRC). I think I've seen this dramatization in some other
source in the past.

I also saw what was obviously a photocopy of the /Starlog/ technical
manual, which kind of surprised me because I don't really see (or should I
say notice) things like photocopies in such stores), for something like
$25. I also saw a boardgame there, and occasionally see a coloring book or
comic elsewhere.

The frequency I see S19 items at such places is not that high, however, so
it seems most people keep (or toss :-( ) their S19 items, and don't sell
very often. I've yet to see items such as model Eagles or toy moonbuggies.

More commonly, I see the novelizations in used book stores (those I pick up
for convention auctions), though some (particularly the less-common Y2
ones) are sometimes behind the desk, where the more collectible books are.

Just some observations...

As am I. The first 12 eps are almost burning a hole through the table, but
I've been too jammed up in time terms to look yet.

What I find particularly nice is they've come out at a pretty good time,
when DVD is really surging in popularity and number of titles, but while
there are still relatively few TV series represented yet.

Yes, I've heard of some of the troubles, but it is still a good development
these are out now, IMO.

Too bad, however, that someone didn't hire Catherine before putting
together the artwork.

Well I know people like Alan Willis and David Lane are still around, but
I can tell you that Frank Watts died some years ago. Are any of the
remaining people likely to remember much about the technical aspects of
the series to help? Also, does anyone actually notice that the music is
"4% fast"(or indeed that the film action is 4% slow)?

Keith Wilson could be a good bet. I'm sure he's spoken before about
the problems inherent in shooting the on-set video screens, because
they were running at 25fps while the cameras ran at 24fps.

I once asked Fanderson about this, and was told that all the Anderson
film series were shot at 24fps for ease of sale to America.

>Also, does anyone actually notice that the music is

Almost nobody. Some people have claimed that the 4% change makes for
an entirely different dramatic experience depending on which version
you watch, but IMHO that is an enormous exaggeration.

I really love his character and the episode plot.
I think "The Troubled Spirit" is the perfect
companion piece to "Force of Life".
I will never forget the opening mood with the sitar solo
owing to Jim Sullivan.
May botanist Dan Mateo rest in peace!

The following good review appeared in today's edition of "The Oregonian", the
main daily newspaper of Portland, Oregon. I thought many on the list may
enjoy seeing the text of the piece. (Others, please skip it!) It reads as
follows:

---------------------------

The Oregonian
Arts and Entertainment

Written by: Marc Mohan

Rating: A

"THUNDERBIRDS"

In the near future, millionaire ex-astronaut Jeff Tracy and his sons have
created a top-secret outfit called International Rescue. Using the most
recent advances in vehicular technology and gadgetry, they operate from an
isolated tropical island, helping those in need while protecting their
secrets from the world's enemies.

Sound like the plot for next summer's action megahit? Maybe the latest Sci
Fi Channel series? It's a rather generic concept -- but what if it was all
done with puppets and models? Now, there's a show!

By now, anyone with a vague memory of watching "Thunderbirds" in TV
syndication any time from the mid-1960s to the late 1970s has caught on.
This amazing program has been granted new life with a video release that
should rekindle the 10 year-old boy inside anyone.

For a so-called kid's show filmed in Supermarionation, "Thunderbirds" packs a
surprising amount of plot into its hourlong episodes. Both the length and
the dialogue-driven complexity are a sharp reminder of how much television
has degenerated over the past 30 years. Nothing here is Pulitzer-quality, of
course, but there's a real attempt to tell stories in between the action
scenes.

It's the detailed vehicles and other gizmos used by the Tracy clan (and their
London agent, Lady Penelope) to ward off disaster and oppose the malicious
Hood (a not-very-PC Asian villian) that garner the cult following for
"Thunderbirds". The show is the ultimate fantasy of any pre-pubescent male
who ever took plastic soldiers into a sandbox.

There's also an appealing modishness about it, with the Tracy boys all in
their dapper uniforms and their swank headquarters looking like something out
an an early Bond film. A&E Home Video has released six episodes on VHS and
12 on DVD, perfect for old fans or new to dive into. Fab!

(1965, 52 minutes each episode, not rated, $29.95 per 3-tape set, $44.95 per
2-disc set).

Anthony Wynn

Well, I cannot say he has never been what we call a big star but he was
certainly a honest pro actor in stage, cinema and tv. He also was a dubbing
director for many US tv series here in Italy including Star Trek Deep Space
Nine, The X-Files and my favorite Northern Exposure. He started his career
as a stunt man. I never met him but he has been invited to Moonbound One
last year. My friend Giuliano talked to him at the phone a couple of times
and told me he was thrilled to meet Barry Morse in Modena after 25 years or
so. Unfortunately he couldn't came at the last minute due to a tv show he
was shooting at the time. He has been ill for a long time. We were supposed
to finally meet him this year for Moonbound Two but, unfortunately, the
disease got him first :((

He appeared in minor roles in many Italian and international productions
including the "War and Remembrance" miniseries and the movie Ladyhawke.

     Roberto.

Giancarlo Prete gives a very fine, passionate performance in Troubled
Spirit...really adds to this great episode. He's one of the great Space 1999
guest actors. He will be missed by Space 1999 fans.

Hello everyone,
I just loaded a file picture into the files section that you might
like.
It's a picture of Plato Crater, from our own moon. This, according to
a couple of references is where Moonbase Alpha was built.
If you'd like to see more pics of the crater you can go to....

Just log on and find Plato in the files.
Hope you enjoy.

Hi All,

i thought while i had not written to the list for a while.....i'd share some
spooky 1999esque things that have happened to me recently

Spooky 1.

I decided to jack my job in as a self-employed lockfitter and rejoin the
rat-race and relax without the hassle of chasing my tail in self-employment.
Anyway i went out for a meal at christmas with some of my building trade
friends and we booked a table at a new bar and settled down to my leaving
bash. On arriving at our table i noticed a large painting of what was a
planet setting with the earth and others drifting around so nothing strange
there !
But....as the beer and wine flowed i was constantly drawn to this painting
and increasingly i noticed the planet i believed to be the moon had what to
me looked like a base on it !!!
After a while i wanted to have a closer look but this thing was quite high up
on the wall and i thought better of it, then to my astonishment the prince
song "1999"came on in the background and with the intake in my alcohol sector
reaching a critical level i stupidly thought (not at the time) the most
incospicous way to examine this calling moon was to climb on to our table and
check it out and low and behold on the moon was faint texturing of, to me was
mainmission and travel tubes in black charcoal.
i was then asked to finish my meal and leave !

Spooky 2.

After enjoying a 2 week break from lockfitting i looked thru the jobs vacant
ads and spotted an opening at a company 5 mins from my home making electrical
components for what i thought was a new place making domnestic heating
apparatus with a well known firm called 'maxiglow'. well i strolled thru the
interview at their office and got the job starting on the monday.
On arriving at the workshop i noticed it was not called 'maxiglow' but
'maxigrow' and i can now tell all on the list i now work in hydroponics which
for me is soo cool yet spooky and not making heaters as i first thought !

Spooky...ish 3

After wading thru postings about dvds and only owning video tapes of 1999, i
decided to make a pre-order for the uk release discs and rang a few mail
order companies in the uk for the best deal on price for the charlton discs.
One of the places i spoke to on the phone made me freeze ! The chap who said
he would match my cheapest deal sounded like Victor....every nauance (sp?) in
his voice gave me the impression i was speaking to our beloved professor
himself, i continued to ask about other discs i was really not interested in,
just to hear this man talk in a way i have heard so many times before. i even
said my name was 'john' just so he could say " well john you can have then as
quick as i get them" (giving me the impression he was building some
forcefield for alpha or a gizmo for a landing).

Thing is....this s**t really happened, and i wondered if others have had this
happen to them or have i just waited too long for the dvds.

well...i' thought i'd share that with the list rather than a rambling about
bitrates and green tints.

Hi all,

There is an interview with Gerry regarding Thunderbirds and 1999
currently at the sci-fi website. It is a very insightful read and
Gerry stands by the concept of our favourite series while politely
slapping down the interviewer.

http://www.scifi.com/sftoday

His response about why didn't he send the show out on a ship instead
of the notion of sending the moon on an interstellar journey that
results in improbable physics is classic:

Anderson "I am afraid I am a bit more original than wanting to copy
other people's successful shows. And if you think Star Trek is
probable, then I'm a monkey's uncle"

Unfortunately he's likely right. If interstellar travel ever does come to
pass it will most likely be very slow and very expensive, and probably not
practical for any sort of human commerce.

Hello Alphans,
I've already stated that I find this an enjoyable year two romp indeed.
First, it just seems to achieve a nice balance between the best of both
seasons. You've got the dreamy, pychedelic opening, philosphical touches and
story that wouldn't be too out of place in year one if the stlye and filming
were altered. It also mixes in the best intentions of year two, that being
strong character interaction and a healthy dose of fast paced action.
Personally I really like Magus. Had he been a reappearing villian he
would have predated Q from STNG. Glad he wasn't though because this story
works great as a one off. Guy Rolfe's performance is one of my fave guest
actor's. He really does manage to evoke a religious air. He certainly looks
the part. It is interesting to watch him go from a dignified God-like
presence to the vulnerable alien that he is by the end.
What a great opening. The image of Magus flying across the cosmos
amidst a rainbow of light on Command Centre's main screen is one of my fave
Space 1999 images. Love the music in this one, especially during this scene
and the piece that plays while Maya is an owl perched on Magus's arm. Top
points. It's nice to see Maya turn into something elegant like the white
owl, by the way. I'm not a big fan of her Gorilla guises. Ooops. Take away a
point in this episode. There are some god-awful rubber-monsters in the Maya
fight scene. Utterly unwatchable stuff and sullies an otherwise great
episode.
I like the acting in this one. When you have to see Koenig in bark mode
it's nice to see it directed at the baddy! Koenig sure does have some
sarcastic, smug ones to throw at Magus. My fave...."We're a little short on
sacrificial goats". Of course Magus makes a great foe dishing it right back.

     Some other points:
1. Like the outside setting, especiaaly shots of Magus, eyes closed, face
into the sun (becomes important plot point!)

2. Alan doesn't hesitate to grab for the free drinks Magus offers the
Alphans. Nope. After everyone else turns them down Alan doesn't hesitate to
grab up the free goods. A bit thing for sure, but it's exactly how I'd
expect Alan to act. Throw caution to the wind. Live it up while you can.
Kind of reminds me of the Alan back on Ultima Thule in Death's Other
Dominion, all smiles at the prospect of good times (or scantily clothed
women)

3. I like how the Alphans gradually deduce that Magus is not what he appears
to be and that he is actually a space magician (love that idea!) drawing his
power from light. Fitting to have him meet his end in such a primitive but
effective manner.

4. I actually really enjoy this episode for it's look and style, especially
the opening and the first half. The soft focus pastels, religious imagery,
rainbow lights and angelic music (i'm thinking of the opening in particular)
are really great. Reminds me of Missing Link somewhat. The city of light had
some of this imagery and some magical music...

Cheers, Edward

The current issue of Science Fiction Chronicle has a review of John Muir's
book Terror Television (McFarland, 3/01, $75 ISBN 0-7864-0890-1) by their
resident book reviewer Don D'Ammassa. Since it's a short review I'll type
it up here. It does mention Space 1999! You can probably browse through a
copy at your local Border books or Barnes & Noble.

-----------------------------------------------------

Here's a hefty, six hundred page plus guide to horror on television from
1970-1999. The author provides episode guides to forty television series
accompanied by lengthy background essays, summaries of critical response,
cast and crew credits and associated information. There is additional
material on anthology and non-horror shows that occasionally used
supernatural content, everything from the Munsters to Space 1999 to
so-called reality TV. The essays are often very interesting, and the book
appears to be well researched. I would have liked to have seen a few
stills, particularly from the shows I've never seen, but it's a small
quibble. This is a valuable addition to any reference library of modern
television, or modern horror. You can order it direct for $79 from
1-800-253-2187 or send money to Box 611, Jefferson, NC 28640.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I've been watching SF Chronicle to see how their coverage of McFarland Press
was going, I did notice them a few issues ago list a bunch of new McFarland
titles but i THINK this is the first review Don has done of a John Muir
book. Remember, this isn't a mass market book, McFarland is a small press
and the books are usually library binding so the price is higher than would
be expected from a larger publisher.

Sorry to hear the news about Dan Mateo. Notably we also lost SF writer
great Gordon R Dickson (DORSAI!) this year. I went to a panel about him at
Boskone last month. They also spoke about AE Van Vogt who we lost earlier.

I'm behind in my ExE again so I have to finish watching AB Chrysalis and i
think i found a good song parody subject for it! To make it good I have to
watch the episode closer and I've had Bronchitis this weekend so no energy
to do much at all! These Parodies take about 1 -3 hours to do once I decide
what song to base them on. Choosing a song that appeals to me and the
subject sometimes takes days unless i have an idea beforehand. (The song for
Ring Around the Moon, if it works, is going to be great! I have high hopes
for Black Sun as well!) Anyway, I did write a song for the Dorcons but
never posted it before as i did it way after that ExE ended and felt it was
a minor effort. But to tide you over while I work on the others, here it
is!

----------------
The Dorcons
(sung to the tune of The Flintstones)

Dorcons. Meet the Dorcons
They're a dysfunctional space family
From the Planet Dorcon,
They need some Psychon brain stems real fast please

Lets run through the halls of this big ship
and jump into beams that move us real real quick

When your with the Dorcons
you'll find your ship exploding real good,
exploding real good,
you'll blow up real good now!

I know this has already been asked but I'm not sure if an answer has been
posted yet or if indeed there is an answer yet. When are the next batch of
A&E DVD's set to come out? Is there even a rough guess at this point by any
list members? Or better yet, a definite release date? I'm assuming they WILL
be released? Ther's no way they'd tease us with a great first run and then
leave us dry without War Games or Dragon's Domain would they?...... WOULD
THEY!!?? Wooul...uld...The....ey!..?..!!!( HAL computer-like mental
breakdown occurs following comprehension of this dreadful notion....)

Anxious cheers, Edward

From what I've heard on the various lists from people who know a lot of
stuff the A&E disks have been selling very well for this sort of thing and
they were thinking of moving up the release of the next sets. I believe it
was supposed to be this summer but am not 100% sure.

But if the sales keep up the whole show should be out on DVD!

And I've also bought the first Thunderbirds box set as well which has nicer
box art than the 1999 ones! Not that there's anything wrong with the 1999
box art! ; -)

Later!

At least I got my song fix! It was short but sweet. Sounds like you have
some doozies for year one! Ring around the moon....can't wait to hear that
one. Incidentally that's the episode I always picture when I hear Alan
Parson's "Eye in the sky". Maybe he got that from Ring around the moon!

Cheers, Edward

Hiya,
I am new to the group. I am a fan of many of the Gerry & Sylvia
Anderson productions, esp UFO, SPACE:1999, and Stingray.

I have a question. (If it's in a FAQ somewhere feel free to provide a
link.). Does anyone know what became of Commissioner Simmons, who was
at Alpha during the moon's breakaway. I don't recall seeing him after
the first episode.

Thanks!

Hi Teresa! Welcome to Alpha, we know each other from the UFO list.

Simmonds returns in the episode Earthbound and meets an untimely end during
that story!

Check out more 1999 stuff on Space1999.net or the Space 1999 Catacombs!
