Hi all!
I have heard about this mailing list for quite some time now, and for
reasons I can't explain, just decided to get off my back-side and join. I have
been a fan of Space: 1999 since it first ran, here in the states. I even have a
website dedicated to it called Moonbase Alpha's Space: 1999 Page .

Thanks.

Another good reason for the change was that most of the cast couldn't run
around in form-fitting tights anymore...

I sort of wish they had split the difference in the change - lightweight,
comfortable clothing makes more sense for working on a spaceship than what
looks like a heavy wool jacket plus turtleneck shirt underneath -- they must
really have to crank up the air conditioning on the ship... I like the
costume change that occurred after a season or so in ST:TNG, where the
form-fitting collar-less outfits were replaced by something closer to a
jacket design, with a collar.

You'll notice that by the last two "Star Trek" movies, "First Contact" and
"Insurrection", they've gone back to using less color, with a basic black &
grey outfit with a color shirt underneath.

I like monochromatic designs in movies, but while I think the steel, chrome,
aluminum, and blue lighting (in places) worked in ST:TMP to give it a
high-tech feeling, the beiges and grey painted flats and costumes have
become dated-looking -- too much of what the corporate world at the time
thought were "elegent" & relaxing colors.

USA Today reported today that Dave Prowse, who played the cloud
creature in "The Beta Cloud" and is more famous for being the guy in
Darth Vader's costume, has been partially paralyzed by a mysterious
illness. He was hospitalized in London last week after losing
sensation in his arm, and his condition has worsened. Doctors are
baffled but a stroke has been ruled out. Prowse is 65.

From the Starship Modeler website...........

Wilco Models, an established garage kitter, has ventured into the sci-
fi genre with a 1:1 scale Mk I/II Laser Weapon from Space: 1999. The
kit comes with two resin pieces (the selector switch added in Season
2 is the separate piece), and includes instructions and comprehensive
painting notes. The kit sells for $25 US + $4 US shipping. It's
available through Monsters in Motion or direct from Wilco Models
(Wilco can only accept checks and money orders at the moment,
however).

Their next offering will be shipping soon: a prop replica kit of the
Commlock (COMMunications and LOCKing Device), also from SPACE:1999.
For more information, or to find out how to order, contact Wilco
Models. (03/01)

PS. A humble suggestion...the small pics on the back, great with

Wow!

The cover looks great! I'm going to have to print these out (Out of Ink
right now) and fit these to my set to make a custom set of DVD's!

On a similar note I decided to look over the Fanderson news page and saw the
UK Stingray DVD covers!

http://www.fanderson.org.uk/news.html#1999%20DVD

They make the A&E Space 1999 disks look like masterpieces! The characters
are pictured inside an oval that resembles a toilet bowl and the different
colors are blue, purple, orange/red, green and Lavender! The one with
Phones (Orange/red) looks like a Tide detergent box.

Ah well the most important thing is the actual programs themselves, not the
packaging.

I, personally, don't see what everyone is complaining about what the
Space: 1999 DVD's! As long as they are better than the LD's (which they
are) --- the only improvement I'd have added was Subtitles and a 5.1

I think I sent the founder an email and mentioned our list - he appreciated

The easiest way is to install a DVD drive and a DVD player on your Windoze
machine and then use the player's ability to make a screen capture.

I use PowerDVD for this purpose...

Another belated review from captphil. Mucho distractions this weekend, from
family stuff to the oncoming Noreaster that may or may not give me a day off
from work tomorrow!

I did write some short comments but wanted to give this "thing" a little
more thought.

Okay, I thought about it.

I still stand by my original comments comparing it with RATM Petter, (Who is
emailing me privately about my assorted RATM messages!) which were in a
nutshell me saying these two were very alike. The reason I think of them as
being alike is I get confused watching them not being sure what the real
story is. I watched The Cell last night and I also felt this movie suffered
from a similar plot problem, it's a story in search of a plot!

Catacombs, is it about those caves (Which the Catacombs website say are too
irregular to be manmade and impossible to be natural!) is it about that heat
from space, (Is it a Star coalescing? Could this have been a sequel to
Force of Life????) is it about Koenig not giving a few grains of some
element to make a Lucite heart work? Is it about mutiny, about the Alphans
sliding into madness?

Sadly its about none of these things!

Imagine an episode (Any season will work) of the Alphans making an
underground network of caves, making a Hollow Moon in the spirit of
Heinliens Universe ships. Great idea there. Imaging the moon drifting
through a part of space where stars are forming? How would they survive?
What would or could they do? Would Arianna help them? Imagine an episode
where Koenig sentences a woman to die because it may endanger all of Alpha.
What does her husband do? Imagine an Alphan seeing visions, sliding into
madness! How do 300 people on an enclosed base deal with mental illness,
multiple personalities?

Perhaps the original drafts had something like this or something better.

Anthony Terlipoff wrote these scripts which all of you know (info pasted
from the Catacombs site) all of which I really like with the exception maybe
of Death's Other Dominion (Memory failure!) and of course the episode in
question.
Earthbound, Collision Course, Catacombs of the Moon, and, with Elizabeth
Barrows, Death's Other Dominion, The Infernal Machine

Is there any proof that this story was rewritten? So far in what I've read
both in the new and the old ExE there's only speculation.

So, here I am nitpicking this story. Enough of that!

I do love the idea of caves under Alpha being dug by the Alphans. I wish we
had seen more of that. The Space heat thingy could also have been of some
interest if it wasn't killed by Koenig and crew flying around it making
insipid comments about it!

So I'll abandon the rest of the comments about the EFX (Which were pretty
good) and the sets (The caves were alright as well) but on Maya, walking
around in one of those curtain rod dresses just at the right time! It was
sort of like seeing Huey Lewis in Back to the Future or one of those
Hitchcock walk ons!

Too bad Maya doesn't have her own theme song for Y2, it would have been
great to hear it as she appeared (And Tony could have uttered the great Bill
Murry line from Ghostbusters, "Okay, she's a dog!")

I have to say I still enjoy year two and am enjoying it in good fun. I'm
not sure if i could have taken 48 episodes in the style of Year one unless
the series began to follow some sort of story arc. I'm also not sure if I
would go with the notion of Year two being in a parallel universe or the way
Year One and two were bridged in the fix up story shown at the Main Mission
Convention (Hopefully shown at the Tampa con as well!) but i am glad to have
Catherine Schell and 24 more hours on Moonbase Alpha!

That being said, this episodes song parody is pretty sarcastic and I want
you to remember you always hurt the ones you love! : -)

Hi,

If anyone is interested, here are a few pictures of Catherine Schell in her
first film, Lana, Queen of the Amazons.

Is it really true that she prefers not to remember having made this film? If
so, it's a shame because it really isn't that bad.

Over on Sci Fi weekly they have finally gotten around to reviewing the Space
1999 DVD sets. The review seems to have come out of a time capsule! The
reviewer manages to cite that great tin god Trek, misses the point of
Anderson using Rudi Gernreich and mentions only three of the episodes in his
review.

1999's multinational cast is taken as a nod to Trek instead of the
international sale of Space 1999 all over the world!

Not a good review, not a fan of the show and I think the reviewer only went
through 3 episodes.

I submitted a request to them to have someone else review it who is not a
"Trekkie" and give it a better look. After all, if they can give
"Battlefield Earth" a B rating, 1999 deserves better. 1999 fans check out
the website and speak your mind to them!!!

Now, I love Trek, but I too am sick of it getting
credit for every good idea in the SF universe. Nobody
ever trashes Roddenberry for ripping off every sci-fi
story and concept in history to make his show (the
same thing can be said of George Lucas). You can trace
Trek's origins to Forbidden Planet, Buck Rogers, Rocky
Jones, Flash Gordon and many other literary greats.
But, that's okay. The Trek characters are no more
different than any Western series cast. The tough but
tender leader, the cranky doctor and the all-wise best
friend. Did somebody say "Gunsmoke"?

I credit the writers of Trek for giving the audience
some great stories, but it did not influence ALL SF.
1999 was pretty orignal for TV, but there were
influences. 2001, Dr. Who and the Anderson's own past
series, like UFO and Thunderbirds.

When the second season comes out on DVD, then the
Trekkies will have something to say, only because
Frieberger did his best to make 1999 as much like Trek
as possible. Funny how that wasn't nearly as
successful.
