Absolutely. I think it definitely WILL get made merely on name recognition
alone.

Now whether the remake is good or not depends on the script.

Do get Space: 1999 remade it just needs a really good script.

She'd be a great Moonbase Commander!

No, it doesnt have to be a man, but without a good *story* reason its just a
'gimmick'.

I Was thinking .How about a film where a new generation of Alphans[the
children of the base] take over ...The Commander is the daughter of
Koenig and Russell. It would be a novel way of telling the story in a new
light. In a way it would be cheaper to do.

You took the words right out of my mouth, Michael.
Some points:

-Juliet Landau could play (gasp) the daughter of Koenig and Russell and has been
groomed for leadership by her pushy father. She initially doesn't want it, but
falls into it and excels.

-If Martin could be coerced into doing a bit at the beginning, he could be on
his deathbed, knowing he's on his way out. He has a talk with Juliet about
missing her mother, Victor, Tony, etc. Then tells her that she must help the
Alphans (still trying to get home??) and be the leader he knows she can be.

-As Koenig fades away, Arra shows up, takes his hand, and leads him into the
dark night.

-For some friction, someone else (??) wants to be the Alpha leader, but the Old
Guard (Alan, Sahn, and Maya) support Juliet. This someone else still tries to
undermine her here and there, until the regolith hits the fan and he/she
realizes that he/she doesn't have what it takes to lead.

-Maya (played by CS, of course) is a venerated advisor, still with a sharp
scientific mind (ala Victor). Possibly she has taught a couple of students the
metamorph whammy.

-A watering hole could be called "Tony's Bar" and specialized in beer. Tony,
sadly, will have passed away by this time (who could ever replace Anholt??)

-Never been a fan of the human/alien crossbreed so no Maya/Tony progeny. Maybe
Maya as guardian/adoptive parent of Tony's offspring (could be played by
Christian Anholt - he could be the pretender to the throne!!).

-Eagles could be updated by the influx of a bit of alien tech (this would allow
the CGI folk some play-but not too much, should still be an Eagle- in the design
of the new ships).

-Alan as curmudgeonly flight commander and there is a young pilot who are always
bumping heads, but actually respect each other.

-Alpha has spread out a bit more. Maybe a Moonbase Beta. Like the idea of some
moon caverns. The original haunts could be "Old Town".

-Sahn could be the headmistress of the Alpha school.

Anyway, my dos centavos!

Bob

Actually, a Tony/maya offspring would make sense. I like the idea myself.
And -Maya (played by CS, of course) is a venerated advisor, still with a

students the metamorph whammy- wouldn't work, since Maya stated more than
one that only her race has "the unique molecular structure" that allows
for the transformation in the first place.
I would think we might see a Paul/Tanya offspring. After all, I think
they shared more than just music, during BS.

As i said in an earlier post 1999 could be done with the next
generation.Say they find a new Earth but are forced to relocate back to
Alpha which they have maintained for such a situation because of a
castaphorie. But the arrival of ARRA thats a bit contrived the actress[my
mother a brit loved the actress] died not long after who would replace
her.. Marina Sirtis maybe. Ithink it would solve a lot of problems or
even ARRA putting the moon back in earths orbit saying that Earth would
have a different destiny telling the Alphans to disable Apollo 13 so
that it wouldnt land and change history so there would be no Alpha. Ive
seen a fanbased story on that.

That's not a bad idea.

You could still have 'flashbacks' so that you could see all the cool special
effects.

You could *also* use the idea as an excuse to skip the whole 'explanation' for
how the moon left the earth's orbit! No one remembers it quite right...

;)

VERY Nice!

Some scene ideas:

Flashback to Keonig being one of the origonal builders and diggers on the
original moonbase. Showing that the construction was lonely and dirty work and
very low tech, all bulldozers and space suits. Maybe something like Ridley's
power suit being used. The idea is that our technology never will and never did
arrive at the 'Star Trek' level and that the people who built the Moonbase
believed in it enough to sweat for it. Maybe even an industrial accident.

The Earth as it is now - NOISY - with a constant bombardment of social
networking and advertisements, coming through over loadspeakers everywhere, even
coming to your bathroom mirror while your shaving. Lots of automation in cars,
doors, etc., but a complete loss of anominity. The idea is that those that
choose the moon do so because they are happy to get *away* from Earth as it is.

Michaels idea for the opening scene has merit but a little too heavy on
effects. When they released Lost in Space the ship didnt look anything
like the series Jupiter 2 and was too futuristic to my taste.Same with
Star Trek Enterprise in the first filmin 1979.What i would aim at is
bascially telling how the moon got blown out of its orbit but do it
such a way that effects does not overshadow the story or character.
Really all of us want to keep intact whats important here.the story of
311 men and women fighting for survival against the odds.

What bothers me is that the studios spent untold millions on effects and
yet doesnt spend near enough on story.Star Trek had great stories in the
60s because of low budgets. When they did the first film they went
overboard on effects and as a result it was a boring film.Luckily wiser
heads prevailed and they went back to story and it flourished. 1999 MUST
not be allowed to be overwhelmed with gadgetry instead they should stick
to its strength the story.

Well, the reality of it bad stories sell.

Star Trek had great stories because David Gerrold (who was cheap to get at the
time) hired science fiction writers. Science Fiction writers are tougher to work
with and more expensive than the millions of screenwriter hacks that the studios
can get for a dime a dozen.

Star Trek I was profitable. No matter how boring you thought it was, it did
better than most of the Star Trek films that followed.

Cowboys & Aliens made a fortune - despite being a Sci-Fi Channel movie of the
week with better actors and better production values, but still a lame story
(heck, I spent $20 bucks on it).

Don't let it bother you, if it were your studio you'd do the same thing, because
it's pretty much garanteed profit, whereas any story that is even slightly
interesting is going to alienate some members of the audience. Risk is not what
ANY businessman is about.

(I have a quote next to my computer that says "When you're ready to pay $8 for
sensitive dramas about the humand condition, let us know - The Hollywood
Studios")

Whereas a stupid story with good special effects is pretty much garanteed to
make a profit.

Space: 1999 is by definition risky and different. So it had better have a darn
good story - and darn good special effects - to be succesful.

However, I'm betting that just for name recognition alone, it will get made.
Heck, they're bring back the SMURFS!!

They really aren't connected. You can have both effects and story. You can have
neither. You can have one or the other. Star Trek had great stories "in spite
of" not "because of" low budgets.

I see your point, but as someone once said (it might have been George Lucas),
"The first ten minutes and the last ten minutes are the most important part of
the film - the rest is just filler").

That's why I like the idea of the film starting with the relatively silent (but
visually impressive) building of the moonbase. Alternating in a montage with a
world teaming with a constant bombardment of colorful advertisment and
futuristic imagery.

The idea is that the danger of the moonbase is the ONLY way to pay for the
extravagant and wastefull lifestyle of all the poeple on the earth.

That's why the risks of putting atomic waste on the moon were ignored, because
people wanted to live on the 'holographic' internet and be entertained 24 hours
a day! Where the garbage was dumped was someone else's problem....

That was generally my thinking...

As I understand it, Star Trek had a pretty good budget for the first
two seasons, at least. And those of us who started watching it in the
early '70s at the latest thought the special effects generally looked
pretty good. And a lot of the model design, set design, and matte
paintings were excellent. You want shows that had good stories and
really low budgets, look at Doctor Who or Blake's 7. Star Trek was
state of the art for TV in its time. You have to look at it the way
people would have seen it then, not how it looks now. And back then
people were impressed.

It was right after Star Wars, which completely changed what people
expected from science fiction movies. TMP looks like what it probably
was -- a movie by people who were still thinking of 2001: A Space
Odyssey as real cinematic SF trying to adapt to the post-Star Wars
era. Oddly enough, it may be one of the few filmed Trek stories to
come close to the feel of first season Space: 1999 -- very sterile
sets, unmistakeably '70s costume design, lots of talking, some trippy
cosmic stuff, a female avatar for a mysterious alien force, great
background music....

> Star Trek had great stories because David Gerrold (who was cheap to get at the

Well, no. David Gerrold was cheap to get because he was a kid with no
credits, and he didn't work on the show, he sold a couple of scripts.
One of which nearly got everyone in trouble when they realized he'd
unconsciously ripped off Robert A. Heinlein, the other of which was
rewritten extensively by another writer. He didn't hire anyone to
write for the original Star Trek, though he also contributed to the
animated series and wrote the series bible for The Next Generation.

Gene Roddenberry ran the show, but early on it would have been
producer Gene Coon who worked with the writers (he bought Gerrold's
The Trouble With Tribbles). There were other producers and behind the
scenes people as well, including, eventually Fred Freiberger (alas).

How many science fiction writers worked on Star Trek? Let's see..
Harlan Ellison, Jerome Bixby, George Clayton Johnson, Richard
Matheson, Jerry Sohl, and Gerrold, of course -- but Gerrold was a
nobody at the time. The others all had experience writing TV and/or
movies. They had some SF background, to varying extents, but several
are best known as Hollywood TV writers. When Stanley Kubrick made a
science fiction movie, he went to one of the big names in the field,
one known first and foremost as a novelist and short story writer.
Roddenberry and his team didn't do that. Aside from Gerrold and
possibly Sturgeon they were working with people who'd already written
for TV.

As for expense... the average TV writer makes a crapload more money
for one episode than the average prose writer makes for a novel, much
less a short story. I doubt that was very different in the 1960s. Any
SF writer without a track record writing for TV would have leaped at
the money offered by TV, and wouldn't have held out for more on the
grounds of being a distinguished writer of science fiction. (Look at
how much fiction writers like Philip K. Dick churned out in the 1960s
just to keep paying the rent. Writing SF was often a lousy way to make
a living, even for some of the people we think of as legends.) But
since all but one or two of the SF writers who worked on Trek were
already Hollywood screenwriters, I doubt there was any extra cost for
hiring them. (And of course there are Guild rules and contracts that
determine how much the writers get paid, anyway.)

Just a few observations.

...about a new series.

Just for the sake of discussion, let's say they are going to do a "next gen"
series/movie.

What would be the raison d'etre?

In the original, the folk wanted to either get back to Earth, or since that was
a dim chance, find a habitable planet for 'em all and settle "New Earth".

With a next generation, all they know are the environs of Alpha (and whatever
improvements might have been made). That would be "home" to them.

Would they want to find a planet to settle? Would agoraphobia be a concern as
maybe claustrophobia was to their parents?

How about resources? They would have been taught at an early age to be very
frugal with energy, food, water, etc. How do they handle the embarrassment of
riches a whole planet would afford them?

Do they come across an existing civilization and emigrate? Maybe becoming
something akin to an ethnic minority here and possibly dealing with prejudice.
Or the flipside - finding a primitive civilization and dealing with being
treated as godlike by the aboriginals.
What choice would they make?

Anyway, just a couple of thoughts.

What about yours??

Actually I'm currently reading this book:

Which explains pretty thouroughly how it came about. 2001 doesn't really enter
into it.

Okay, so there's that old joke about the moon being made of green cheese, but if
Domino's Pizza's Japanese franchisee has anything to say about it, it'll be
Mozzarella. They're actually considering the logistics of constructing a
Domino's location on the moon.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/space/8734456/Dominos-plans-pizza-on-the-Moon\
.html

But this got me to thinking. Realistically, if there were any sort of large
scale settlement on the moon, there would be commercial interests. Food vendors
would either be setting up their own shops or licensing their name and products
to a third party like Haliburton or Aramark.

It also got me to thinking. We almost never saw the inhabitants of Moonbase
Alpha consuming any sort of sustenance beyond the occasional cup of coffee. I
wonder why that vital part of day to day life was ignored on the show.

I thought I would throw in my idea for a remake. Of course, one of the
challenges of doing a remake of Space:1999 is making it appeal to today's
audiences while staying as true to the original as possible. With that in mind,
here's my idea:

The year is 2099 and Earth is planning on launching a manned expedition to the
planet Meta. The Meta astronauts have taken ill which jeopardizes the mission.
John Koenig is appointed as the new commander. He sole purpose is the get the
Meta probe launched with the backup crew. He is told not to worry about the
illness or the technical aspects of the Meta mission. You see, the Meta probe
will be powered by the Queller Drive. With that drive the journey would take
about 40 years. The Lunar Commission has given no details on how the astronauts
will survive the long mission.

Of course, Koenig immediately begins investigating the illness as soon as he
arrives. He learns that small parts of the astronauts' brains are actually
missing. Dr. Russell has no explanation other than she is certain it isn't a
virus or any other biological agent. The only common factor is that the
astronauts, and the few others who are ill, have all worked at the Meta Probe
Launch Facility which is off limits to all but authorized personnel. Even
though Koenig is the commander of Alpha, he is not authorized to enter the
facility. However, he decides to visit it any way. On the way out parts of his
Eagle disappear causing him to crash. With the crash of the Eagle a theory
develops: antimatter is the culprit. The theory is that in small enough
quantities it would just annihilate matter without releasing much energy. It
would seem that the Meta Probe Launch Facility has an antimatter reactor.

Commissioner Simmonds arrives on the base in an attempt to take charge of the
situation and confirms their suspicions. While thinking that the Queller Drive
used fast neutrons for propulsion they learn that it is actually a Singularity
Mass Drive. It essentially opens a tear in space that allows exceedingly fast
space travel. Since it needs a huge amount of power, an antimatter reactor was
necessary. The reason it was being kept secret was because both technologies
(the drive and antimatter) had been deemed too dangerous and outlawed. Another
SMD had been tested on Earth and thousands of people where killed in an accident
and a multi-billion dollar facility destroyed.

Now the antimatter reactor is leaking and, if containment is completely lost,
will explode, destroying the moon and sending all the debris crashing to Earth,
eventually wiping out all live there as well. A desperate plan is put into
place to try and seal the reactor by dumping a substance called magnecrete on
it. The plan succeeds. However, the antimatter reactor overloads and provides
the Queller Driver with a huge amount of power. A tear in space opens and the
moon is drawn in. Eventually the Alphans learn the Queller Drive activates at a
predictable interval and the moon will continue to be drawn into the tear.

What do you think? I've actually been working on a novella for this.

Take care,
Floyd
