You know what would have been cool? A Space: 1999 movie made around 1977 or
1980, with a decent budget and using the exact same sets (with some expansion on
them) same costumes, and roughly the same level of technology. That would have
been beautiful. To me, SPACE: 1999 will always have a more magical, more
"cinematic" look to it than shows that came after like Star Trek: TNG.

film than "Dances with Wolves in Space". :-)

Excellent comment.  My dream would be that they found the lost footage for
Breakaway and edited it together to the original 90 minutes format.

Being extremely happy with Robert's latest book, I have been thinking about
getting a copy of the Barry Morse book.  Does he produce any interesting
insights on SPACE 1999, or is it mostly talk about life in general?

Hello,
I agree about "Space 1999" having a more "cinematic" look, but it was also more
realistic looking. I love the "Star Trek" movies and the TV series, but they
still seemed to have a Hollywood slickness about them from a visual perspective.
"Space 1999" looked like it could be real at times, especially in the first
season. The first season of "Lost In Space" (when it was filed in black and
white) sort of approached the same illusion of realism. It had very clever
special effects and awesome filming techniques that added to the realism of the
first year.

I'd have to agree with you - and I've wondered if that's what got Space:1999
into "trouble" all the time with critics, etc (about the science being wonky).
It took on this fairly realistic look and thus people got upset when
scientific principles or terms were misused. Just a thought.

Of course, I think, MBA was a tad too big to be realistic(at least for the
year 1999 - maybe for 2199?). I've basically come to the conclusion that the
Moonbase seen in UFO was a more realistic size and perhaps shape (domes) than
MBA. Don't get me wrong though - MBA rocks!

Ah yes, people are always hyper critical on the science when it comes to sci-fi.
Understandable but often annoying at the same time. If only folks could look
beyond that, they might see that a serious effort was made and with a decent
budget, a beautiful show was created.  Yeah maybe UFO's moonbase was more
realistic in size but I can't help but notice that it looks like a handful of
giant soccer balls! Moonbase Alpha is much more impressive though. Gave the
series a grand look and atmosphere.

I agree completely, and the budget is not all that important either, I would
say.  Some of the best science fiction movies ever made, such as Tarkovsky's
SOLARIS didn't seem to have much of a budget at all.

giant soccer balls! Moonbase Alpha is much more impressive though. Gave the
series a grand look and atmosphere.

Jim:

I'd have to agree with you - and I've wondered if that's what got Space:1999
into "trouble" all the time with critics, etc (about the science being wonky).
It took on this fairly realistic look and thus people got upset when
scientific principles or terms were misused. Just a thought.

Of course, I think, MBA was a tad too big to be realistic(at least for the
year 1999 - maybe for 2199?). I've basically come to the conclusion that the
Moonbase seen in UFO was a more realistic size and perhaps shape (domes) than
MBA. Don't get me wrong though - MBA rocks!

Hello...
That's a great analysis about the show being realistic at one extreme and the
science being sketchy at the other. It certainly could have annoyed some
critics. The show did look realistic. The Eagles looked very realistic and even
the rockets on the Eagles kicked up dirt and dust! But, as much as the science
was a stretch at times with "Space 1999," I think it really wasn't more of a
stretch than the science of other shows: "Star Trek", "Land of the Giants" and
so on. In fact, the fantastic elements of "Space 1999" are acceptable when you
consider that MBA had no giant star ship or holodecks that could simulate
reality. As far as Moonbase Alpha's physical size, the fact that it was financed
by international interests could have been the reason it was big. Maybe it also
had to appear large enough to house facilities that would make it independent of
needing supplies sent up from Earth.

Well shiver me timbers and toss me off my solarium tanning bed!!

There's something you don't hear every day: a reference to Toby (Dianna Morris)
Robins on the radio!  Fleeting, but it was there!

It's an interesting show called "Rewind" on CBC radio and it's about archived
CBC radio shows and interviews.  Today they were talking about the origins of
the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, Canada (early 50's), and Ms.
Robins' name was mentioned in a "day in the life" of the workings of the centre
(1954).  While doing a web search, I see that Sydney Sturgess was also there
around the same time.

I was listening to it while out 'n about on jobs, so didn't catch all of it, but
there were some very interesting contemporary interviews with Alec Guiness and
Christopher Plummer.

I'm trying to dig up when it re-airs and will post if anyone's interested.

Thanks for this Linda,

CBC absolutely should do a retrospective show on Barry's contributions to the
history of Canadian television and radio... whether they would or not is
anybody's guess.

I've actually got quite a collection of old audio productions Barry did with CBC
(from his collection), and am in the process of converting them all to digital
format. Who knows, maybe we'll be able to set up a file share amongst fans so
those who are interested can hear some of these fantastic old shows... We'll
see...

If you mean novels the Library is a good place to donate them.
I have gotten two Space 1999 novels in past Library sales.
If you mean that Black & White comic magazine then someone
would want to buy that. I don't remember if there were regular
Space 1999 color comic books but someone would want those to.
Bottom line someone would want what you have.
I have Space 1999 bubblegum cards (still wrapped inside there box)

Hi Alphans:

Came across this pretty cool site called Sci-Fi Airshow
<http://www.scifiairshow.com/index.html> featuring Eagle 4 and the
Hawk from Space: 1999. There are also wallpaper downloads available.
Check it out.

Thank you.
I have already ordered OMEGA and ALPHA and I am looking forward to receiving
them. However, I think some of the books are not available. How can I purchase
them?

I would like to know what you have. I am interested in getting books,
because I don't have any of them.

Hi all. I'm new around here and was wondering if I could get some advise?

I have a few of the old 1977 books and wondered if I should put them up on ebay
or give the to the local used books store? I have no idea if there are anything
fans have been looking for.

Thanks!
