Alphans,

A few quick items related to the Subject....

I have noticed the Powys Media website is now back up and running, as
far as I have re-checked.

I recently ordered /Space: 1999 Year Two Omnibus/, and it arrived last
week. It is a very fine looking hardcover book, and so far I have
read the Foreward sections and "The Metamorph" chapter. The foreward
from Michael Butterworth was a very interesting read in several ways,
and in reading "The Metamorph," I am already noticing improvements and
new references tying into other stories that I now know are the Powys
Y1 novels. Due to timing (I had just restarted re-reading the old Y2
novelizations just prior to wondering what was going on at Powys in
the last couple of years) and several other factors, I jumped at the
Omnibus and now am thinking I should order the Y1 novels even sooner
than I was previously considering!

I am looking forward to the Powys release of the first Y3 novel too.
The premise sounds very interesting, and after my recent analysis of
the final broadcast episode, "The Dorcons," the summary caught my
attention even more.

----David

P.S. Unrelated to the Subject, but in checking websites, I notice
that space1999.org is still down, however.

This is probably a strange and obscure question to most S1999 fans
but... does anyone know what make/type of zip was used in the original
TV show costumes? And if so, what size/length of zip was used?
(Kerry...?) All I know is that they were big and chunky brass zips. The
reason I ask is because I'd like to try and find an original zip (or
two) to use in my own costume I'm hoping to make sometime soon...

Sorry, i don't know the make of zip.I find that you do endless
seraches for these items and frequently come up wanting that you have
to accept in reality the best item you can get that when i can find
such i buy 10 or so items in bulk.

largly the zip as said are brass in some cases the zip head is rather
long(this is particularly hard to find and may well be an item of its
time)this i accept as never being able to find. Remember Space 1999
was made on the tale end of the 60's. So things were much more
extreme so there was greater choice if that makes sence! People tend
to see read 60's and think from Jan 1st 1960 all was wild when in
reality the early 60's were to some degree a continuence of the
1950's. The wild 60's started in '65' 68 and continued in England
into the 70's till suddenly we hit the three day week when it all
calmed down drastically and 1999 started production in 1973.

As to zip lenght the chances are the uniforms at the time were made
in three rough sizes small, medium and large to fit the Extra's so
your best bet on that is to look at as many pictures j-pegs etc and
see were the zip ends. For years i never knew there was a zip in the
left leg so i never put one in there but a word of advise when you do
find something always buy with the idea of it being longer then the
lenght you want as you can always cut the item down to size once you
have it.

Buy to short and your stuck with it.

Not much help i'm afraid

Kerry

Paulo,

Thank you very much for the fanfic. I was out of town for a few days, but I
have now added it to the fiction archive with a notice inviting the author
to contact me. Do you have a rough idea when it might have been published?

In any case, thank you very much for the contribution!

Hi Emma,

I found a couple pieces of fanfiction that I'm not sure how I got hold of.
They're photocopies of type-written texts, probably from some old old
newsletter like "main computer"... I'll be posting them both, now. I think
it's ok to put them at the fan-fiction archive, too. as long as the author
is clearly mentioned and there's some mention that they may be removed from
the site if the author so wishes.

LET THERE BE NO DIRGES

By Daniel J. Palotta

The musicians gathered in the Chapel after the last of the solemn procession
of Alphans had passed through and only the small group of friends remained.

John, Helena, Alan and Sandra stood there, hands joined, for the second time
in twenty-one days.

"We've Just lost Paul and David, John, and now we've lost Victor. Is this
going to *continue?* Are we going to die in bits and pieces, person from
person? Oh, John!" Helena Russell stiffly ran a hand through her blond
hair. "It's all still so clear in my mind! Victor's suit malfunctioning
out there - I'11 never forget hearing him gasp in such pain!" She clenched
her eyes shut and shook her head as if to dislodge the images.

Koenig embraced her gently. "l «as there, Helena. I heard - I heard
- I'm Commander
John Koenig of Moonbase Alpha, and there wa*s *nothing I could do. Nothing!
We all worked like maniacs to save him, but it wasn't to be. It wasn't to
be. All we can do now is mourn." *Mourn!* Koenig reflected. *Paul
Morrow, controller; David Kano, computer operator: and now Victor Bergman,
science officer. Dead. Three of his best personnel... best friends... gone.
Killed.*

"We're ready, Commander." The leader of the group of musicians stood with
his violin. The nine other musicians waited in their chairs. At the end of
the front row, one chair stood empty except for a violin and bow which had
been placed on it.

Helena gazed at it in sadness. 'That was Victor's place, wasn't it, John?"

"Yes, Helena. There's no one to fill it." Koenig sighed, then nodded to
the ten musicians, and they drew from their instruments a melody of sad,
simple beauty.

Sandra Benes whispered to Alan Carter in a strained voice. "I know
that...it's Samuel" Barber' s *Adagio for Strings.* Are they playing that
for Professor Bergman, Alan?"

Carter took her hand. "No, Sandra. The sad music is for us...for the
mourners. Not for Professor Bergman." Alan brushed a tear from his cheek.

The music, more than anything else, brought forth the tears that had been
withheld for so long. Its poignancy acted as a salve, drawing out their
sorrow.

John gazed at the closed casket, nodding. "It's better that way...it's
better to remember him as he lived than to suffer more pain by looking at
his asphyxiated body. What an unfitting death for such a man!"

Helena murmured in return. "He died doing the work he'd lived to do, John.
That much has to count for some measure of fulfillment."

John slowly shook his head. "No measure will ever seem enough."

The bittersweet strains of the *Adagio* continued, deep tones complementing
and contrasting the poignant voices of the smaller instruments, the higher
notes building steadily, reaching ever higher, approaching angelic,
celestial limits, touching them, holding...and returning to sad slowness,
finally ending as they had begun....

The music whispered into silence. They all wept.

John moved toward the casket wherein lay Victor's body, and spoke.

"Victor once asked me to hold no ceremony for him - and I haven't. This is
for we who survive. We mourn our loss. Victor - " John cleared his throat.
"Victor wrote a small thing, that he wished to be read... he said it would
help." John unfolded a small sheet of paper, and read:

"To you who mourn my death, I say: weep not. Shed no tears over my worn
body. We of Moonbase Alpha have experienced the unknown many times since
leaving Earth: we have learned that the Universe is a place of infinite
possibilities. We have learned that life and intelligence are abundant, and
we have seen a fraction of the true glory of the sum total of existence.
You
who survive will see more of that glory. I go ahead of you to become a new
part of it. Make no mistake: death is final. Life, however, is itself
eternal. I have contributed to it, as have you: wherever there is life,
there will I be. Victor Bergman has been, and he will not return. The
effect of his life, however, will ever be. Take me with you within
yourselves to your destinies. Live, laugh, and above all else, love. I
love you all! Goodbye, and fare well.1"

John struggled with a rising pain in his throat. He said the simple words,
the difficult words, for everybody, and the words carne in a broken whisper.

"Goodbye, Victor. Goodbye, dear friend."

The time for weeping was done. The musicians lifted their instruments and,
for Victor, played music of renewal and life and joy, bringing new courage
and hope to the mourners, to Alpha...and to the universe. "La Primavera,"
breathed Sandra. "How nice!1'
After the dark winter of grief, they brought spring. []

Thanks Kerry! I thought it'd be a bit of a long shot for someone
(anyone) to know the exact make and type of a simple zip from so long
ago. Funnily enough, a couple of years ago I came across an auction on
eBay with what the seller claimed were the exact type of zips used in
the production of the original S1999 costumes. Apprently very hard to
come by, they did actually look like them too from the auction pictures.
I ever-so-nearly bid on them but in the end decided not to as I (then)
had no idea I'd one day want to make my own costume. To think that for
just a few pounds I could've at least had those zips somewhere in a draw
just in case... Oh well.

Excellent! I only just, a few weeks ago, first read about this book
when I checked out the Powys Media website. Great to read the latest

Hi Daz, Alphans:

A couple of years ago there was someone on eBay selling one of Martin
Landau's Commander Koenig uniforms. Looking at the pictures I saved,
I can see that the zipper used in the tunic is a "TALON" brand
zipper. Hope this helps.

It's, my experience unfortunatly more and more these days when items
are becoming more unavailable for this and that and get few and fewer
or you meet unhelpful or poorly trained shop staff that you can ask
for this or that and get a poor responce or a take it or leave it
attitude If. however you can put a photo or a print out and put it
under there noise they'll take you more seriously As such if you
still have these j-pegs ..is it possible to put them in a photo
folder in the members section as a source of reference?

The suplier i am using at present to try and get some usable zips
(although i don't know the make) beyond i am told they are suitible
for leather jackets etc. is having problems getting hold of such.
Yesterday he told me he'd could now get get really long ones that
were £3.99 a time so that is approx $8. He has however promished me
others at £3 to £3.10 so approx $6.20 when the stock appears at the
wearhouse. I will however ask him about this Talon brand and see if
he has ever heard of such!

Kerry

Excellent! Thanks Allen! Now that is a good starting point if ever I
heard one! Doing a (very) quick web search I see that these zips have
been around since the war as they were extensively used in leather
military jackets (the heavy duty type zip, that is). Having the make
nailed down should yield better results searching for these things
though I doubt they are very common nowadays. Like Kerry, I too would
really love to see those pics you have too so i can get a better idea on
what they specifically look like...

Are you by chance the Darrell who is selling the Eagle Blueprints
online by any chance? I ask as i have an unusual question if you are
up for it or for any others to try and answer How tall in feet is a
single Eagle Engine bell? Resason i ask is it is known i want to do
something with Action figures and 1999 but i am trying to workout
whether something has landed on my plate that might have some use in
the future.

What, i talk about is a Uplighter brought from a catologue store
called Argus in the UK and plastic upside down cone that is used to
reflect the light upwards with reguards a Eagle Engine Bell. I am
curious as to whether this item is usable then as part of a model or
prop with reguards the front end of an Eagle engine bell if that
makes sence?

Just thought I'd let everyone know. The Powys Media
website was never down, in case anyone was worried.
We're still here, alive and kicking, or alive and
publishing as the case my be.

HOWEVER, the URL www.powysmedia.com expired for a few
days because I forgot to renew it. So it would no
longer direct you to our site. I just renewed it this
morning. It may take a couple of days to start working
again.

We let the www.prisonerbooks.com URL lapse, because as
far as we could tell, no one ever used it anyway.

Well done for what you are doing with your audio tapes.

I have all my 'as-broadcast' audio recordings of S1999 from the 1970s
plus those from the recordings of other fans, and they still get
played, though now from mp3. I know what you say about them being
out-moded in this day and age and I can recall many people dumping
their reel-to-reel and cassette tapes the moment they got a VCR, but
I still like listening to the audio versions and enjoy imagining the
scenes in my mind, crazy, maybe.

I could never throw these recordings out as not only are they a
reminder of happier times, they are also excellent reference material
being an accurate account as to what was actually broadcast by the
television stations. Hearing some of the continuity announcements is
sometimes amusing, and perhaps perplexing is the varying lengths and
content of episodes. Most of my recordings have the music from the
original filmed 'bumpers' at the commercial intersections (not
included on the DVDs).

I am still building my already extensive audio archive of previous UK
broadcasts which has now turned into a bit of a challenge (she has
nothing better to do, I hear you all saying). The mp3's are right
here in my laptop and are also backed up on disc. I'm also
interested in hearing from anyone in the UK who might
just be doing similar or may even like to contribute to my project.

Hi Kerry! Sorry, no, I'm not the one selling Eagle blueprints. I like
the idea of building an action figure-scale eagle though; it sounds very
ambitious! Can anynone else help out with your question...?

I must admit, a few years before the advent of the VCR (I think my
family got their first one in 1982), I too was one of those kids who
'taped' TV shows on C90/C120 audio cassette. My problem though was I
only had a limited supply of tapes so I tended to re-record over alot of
things again and again, only keeping a very few of my most prized
recordings. I remember only too well having the tape recorder right next
to the TV speaker, ready at the pause & record buttons, ordering my
family to be absolutely quiet and the whole way through and nearly dying
with frustration when anybody even so slightly coughed. Unfortunately,
all my recordings are now gone but the meories of those shows I listened
to again and again will be with me forever. Those were the days.

So Ros, good luck with your audio archive! It's a worthwhile venture I
think, especially if you have material which even now has not seen the
light of day on video or DVD. For example, to my knowledge, the
children's TV serial SKY has never been released on either format and I
have very fond memories of watching that when I was a kid. Anyone else
remember the show? And Ros, you wouldn't happen to have it on audio
would you?

Nice to hear your recollections of childhood. It's a pity you no
longer have your S1999 recordings though I'm well aware of the
limitations regarding buying tapes when you're a child. Fortunately
very few of my original recordings were wiped over, but luckily, with
the help from other fans, I have been able to re-acquire certain
broadcasts of particular episodes and in some cases, much better
quality recordings than those of my own (there are more people who
audio taped S1999 than you might think). All the mp3 files are
listed with their original air dates and tally with the information I
sent to 'The Catacombs' website along with scans of the TV Times
clippings.

Ros

PS. I can do better than an audio of SKY. I have a video copy of
the first episode of this very weird series on VHS.

Your right as an idea it is hugly ambitious...and i don't know
whether it is or is not possible. I am first a costume maker, not a
model maker so i approach the whole idea with some intrepitation and
this is something that is likely some years of work. Also due to my
limited income I know that to do such will take a lot of time that if
i see something prmanafactrured that i think might help with this
project it's a case of get it because you'll only regrete it latter
if you've not got it there and then

In the case of the engine bells and in particular the front of the
bell this would seem to exit in the form of the uplighter shade of a
uplighter lamp and due to the fact that the item is so cheap and i am
more interested in the frame this would only be something i would
otherwise throw away. However to some slight degree one of the Roberto
Baldassari blue prints show Alphan astronuant and lunner buggy with
Eagle that judging by the online scane he seems the same hieght
approx as a eagle engine...We can of course also think of episodes
Another Time, Another Place and Testiment of Arcadia for ther mock up
shots that shows Alphans exiting the Eagle itself...However what
might be most usful of all is that Martin Bower by chance on his
website offers something of use in that he has this picture on his
website:

http://www.martinbowersmodelworld.com/lifesize_Eagle_.JPG

What i however debate is whether one should approach something like a
Hawk first over an Eagle as they are less complicated with external
super struture etc...although having used fabric with metal frame
wardrobes on and off i have more than a small amount of metal tubing
here at present.

I recently managed to get hold of an Old part of Action Man/GI Joe
Scorpion Tank with the idea that here are a set of tank tracks should
an Eagle tank be approached. Sadly the GI Joe scopion tank has one
less set of wheels over the original models which might mean just
accepting what one can get as the thought was get one tank for
additional parts/spares...but it would appear that the tank tracks
cannot be added too

I think i am insane in this idea and to make it happen use as much
items that you ca find that are already manafactured that can be put
to another use... but I see it as one of those things i just
eventually want to see if it is possible to do!

Bumpers separate from the program itself? The stations I watched it on
during the original run never showed these although the actual episodes were
uncut.

What country did you watch them in Erich? So far, I am only aware of
the bumpers being shown on ITV stations in the UK, and only in the
broadcasts between 1975 and 1980. They display the same artwork that
was used for the first set of end titles on 'Matter of Life and
Death' and so must have been filmed at the same time. Although the
title sequence at both top and tail of S1999 was later recut and the
text font changed, the bumpers were never updated and went on to be
broadcast.

It was standard in the 1960s and 70s that all the ITC series shown on
ITV stations in the UK had the bumpers included when going off and
coming back from the commercials. I always thought that they would
be used in other countries too, though all the versions I have seen
(on tape) of these programmes from other countries never have the
bumpers.

You can see a still of the bumper at 'The Catacombs' website together
with some of the other continuity slides that were used:

Hi Kerry!

The file is an archived ZIP file so all you'll need to open it up is
WinZIP which (I think) is free to download if you do a search for it on
the net. Once inside the archive you'll find some lovely pics of
Koenig's costume including the all-important close-up of the Talon Zip
we were after. Yes, there's no mistaking it now! Many thanks for those
pics Allen (wherever you are)!

Hi Andy, Alphans:

I think I've got some photos of the Year 2 jackets also, which one
are you interested in? The "warm-up" style or the "coat" style
jackets?

Subject: Random "Alpha Child" Observations

I re-watched this episode tonight, and jotted a few notes. This is
not in-depth analysis, just some brief observations of possible
interest, as I watched.

I also had a couple questions to pose, but will do so separately.

* Everyone anxiously waiting in Main Mission for the news, John Koenig
pacing like an anxious father, everyone bursting with happiness when
Helena makes the announcement, and Sandra crying tears of joy.

* The almost immediate growth of the child, of Sue Crawford's screams
of horror, Helena's look of shock, and finally the sight of a five
year old staring out of a baby's incubator. I remember how scary it
was when I first saw it at the age of ~6 (almost as much as parts of
"Dragon's Domain"), and it still looks creepy to this day.

* Helena showing subtle amazement at Jackie's responses even moments
after waking up as a "five-year old."

* Everyone in Main Mission bemoaning that they may never have a normal
life on Alpha. Very nicely written and acted scene.

* Sue utterly rejecting her child (moaning "What happened to my
baby?"), but the rest of the base becoming like adoptive parents.
Victor reminded me of a doting grandfather. More good scenes.

* Jackie is soon drawing flowers -- and a spaceship -- very well.

* Very nicely done how Jackie goes from playing with the buttons that
show different waveforms on the screen, to carefully feeling out all
the other controls and such, with a very serious look, drawing
Koenig's suspicions.

* Alan: "I'll let you know if they fire." Delivered with aplomb,
like, 'yeah, I know, here I am on the front line again, but I'm fine
with it' (as usual).

* When the first ship arrives, it is described as 100x40m.

* Nice debate about the dangers "Jackie" may now represent, vs. danger
of taking action against him, leading to one of the best passages in
the episode: "Ignorance is no reason to start shooting. After all,
we're..we're all afraid of the unknown. Let's take Jackie Crawford,
for example. Now I know you've all accepted him, but I have some
questions. You see I don't know why he is like he is. I can't explain
it, nor do I understand it. But I'm not about to shoot him."

* Creepy growth again, and nice expressions by Helena Russell and Bob
Mathias on discovering the fully-grown male they soon find out is
named Jarak.

* Jarak killing Sue Crawford and creating Rena from her. I know it's
the same actress, but still effectively done in terms of it being yet
another creepy scene, followed not long after by them trying to kill
all the Alphans.

* One of the four ships was downed just behind a mountain near Alpha.
It exploded, but there could be something to salvage from it (going
back to the salvage / alien technology discussion a few weeks back).
The other three are not so clear, since I noticed no part of the moon
in view for those three. Two of those were destroyed soon after
starting to flee Alpha, so it is possible lunar gravity could have
pulled down some debris, but I could not tell. The pursuit and delay
in destroying the fourth gave me the impression it was probably
outbound from the Moon at the time, in which case debrisfall is
probably unlikely -- but that too is nothing but a guess.

* Jarak's plea, after his ships have been destroyed, of him and Rena
now being human, making requests rather than demands, "appealing as
humans ourselves, appealing for mercy," leaves Koenig appearing
conflicted over this, then agitated as Jarak again shows his true
colors by claiming the new ship will destroy all of Alpha.

* Very, very nicely done spaceships, and the single one that looks
like a homage to /Discovery/ from 2001 is especially excellent.

There are some memorable "creepy" factors in this episode, but it is
not really that but the plot and acting (characterization) all around,
makes it (probably) one of my ten favorite episodes.

Alphans,

Could someone please clarify the following?

1) The way Joan Conway (the powerplant technician) describes about
Jack Crawford's death, it almost sounds like a reference to what
happened in "Force of Life" (Anton Zoref and all), yet is mentioned as
being seven months before. Related or not related? I keep thinking
it is not, yet it sounds so much like it could be. Maybe it's obvious
one way or another, but I am not sure.

2) The mother was called Sue Crawford; but I know I've seen
references to "Cynthia Crawford" in at least a couple other places.
In fact, doing a search just now yields that being the case. I can
see how "Sue" could come from the name Cynthia, but I only heard Sue
in the episode, that I noticed, and am a little confused where
"Cynthia" came from. The original script? Even The Catacombs only
lists her as Sue Crawford, though. What am I missing?

Thanks!

----David
