I'm a new member to the group but a fan from waaaay back. I've
recently been given the opportunity to watch the entire series on DVD
but wanted to get the most out of the experience.

I know that here in Canada, the shows were broadcast in a somewhat
random order. I'm aware of the production dates of each episode but
I'm wondering if there was ever any mention as to how the writers and
producers meant for the story to unfold?

I mean ... the episode 'Black Sun' was the third one made but it seems
like a pretty major event for Moonbase Alpha.

Is there a preferred chronology in which to watch the series?

I had never even heard of COSMIC PRINCESS before I joined this group. Which two
episodes did they mash together to create it? I'm guessing these titles didn't
have the widest release. Several years ago I had VHS copies of ALIEN ATTACK and
JOURNEY THROUGH THE BLACK SUN released as "Sybil Danning's Adventure Video";
both featured an introductory monologue by the scantily-clad starlet, and both
were heavily edited. ALIEN ATTACK contained a bunch of new footage showing the
International Lunar Commission in conference in the aftermath of the breakaway,
which may account for its length. JOURNEY THROUGH THE BLACK SUN really startled
me, since they have edited audio from one of Helena's Year 2 Moonbase Alpha
Status Reports into it-- I believe it was the one from BRIAN THE BRAIN. Can
anyone else confirm this?

The fith movie called simly SPAZIO 1999 (with new music by Ennio Morricone) was
not released on DVD, only available in Italy on VHS.

Now I saw the COSMOS PRINCESS trailer for the first time!

I was positiv surprised that ALIEN ATTACK has now a Length of 110 minutes. This
is the longest version of the movie, I know.

The door is on the underside of the central section, judging from the Airfix
model you referenced.

This then left me thinking if there is a door do the crew have a set

The thought also then went further still when i remembered as a child
when 1999 first came out i sort of saw the Hawk's Command model being
bigger than a Eagle so that there was more crew inside where as the
Blue prints read 2 crew Pilot and Navigator/Gunner. I sort of saw the
cabin as being a little like a model JumboJet in that you had two
sitting forward and maybe one to the side or sitting in the centre.

However,I am then left asking what is in a Hawks interior behind the
Command module...and before you get to the side boosters, clearly
some part would be simular to an Eagle with a Kitchen, loo, spacesuit
storage etc., but what is beyond that? Might one speculate a fixed
small social area with table and fixed chairs and maybe two bunks for
crew to rest on when not needed up front! Anyone have anythoughts or
ideas?

I must admit I see the millitary wing of Earth Command holding to
certain traditions of different Millitary organistions from Earth's
past. Like Pilots in the millitary there jacket would maybe a leather
Bomber jacket style over the jackets we saw in season II of 1999. I
see their uniform as having an Olive Green sleeve...maybe in the
colour of Russian Kaki as it is differnt to the traditional west
shade of Green. There would be somekind of line as per American
uniforms that shows years of service and rank most likley only worn
on the right sleeve. Their Spacesuit would retain a yellow helmet as
that would bs standard to the Space Service but the Spacesuit would
once again be green!

(I hope to explore further this idea with trying to make up what i
see in my head for an Action Figure before the year is out!)

I've always seen it as more like a fighter jet around today. The
command module and the rest with weapons, circuitry, and fuel. As for
the needs of a longer mission, maybe a small john, but I've always
thought of the Hawks launched from some sort of base or carrier so
there was no need for those things. Maybe a Hawk fighter wing might
have support Eagles flying with it and the Hawks can dock with an
Eagle between mission calls. As for a door, maybe just a chute
somewhere to get the pilots in the command module? I'm loving the
uniform idea!

Hi!
Actually, I always saw the Hawk being a bit smaller than the Eagle but that's
really a personnal perception thing.
I never found any clear reference to its size, but I always saw it more as
somekind of space fighter/bomber while the Eagle was a mainly a transport
vehicle.
An old blueprint published in Starlog Magazine was showing the rear half the
Hawk'S body as a Fuel Tank, therefore, It would leave only the froward half (the
more skinny one) as possible living quarters. Being a combat vehicle, it fits
that the hawk has a much larger fuel load than the Eagle, as it is bound to do
more combat acrobatics.
Personnaly, I've always thought only the head of the hawk was fitted to receive
some crew and it was accessed by trapdoors like the ones there are in the roof
and floor of the Eagle's head.
But then again, this is only my perception.

As for the uniform, Kaki would indeed be great, a would stand out from the
Regular Alpha wardrobe!

John.

Distributors are always keen to milk what they can out of popular
television shows to make more and more money. Editing episodes
together to re-sell as movies is one of the options. The original
idea for DESTINATION MOONBASE ALPHA and ALIEN ATTACK was to sell them
to movie theaters in the wake of STAR WARS which was hugely
successful worldwide. There was little take-up, though both of the
SPACE:1999 movies did find a niche in the home video market which was
beginning to boom in the early 1980's.

It was around this time that ITC in New York created a package they
called SUPER SPACE THEATER which contained a number of Gerry Anderson
film series in the back catalogue including SPACE:1999. All had been
re-edited (on video) into TV movies in the hope that they would be
picked up by television stations in the United States.

To answer your questions: DESTINATION MOONBASE ALPHA is made up from
THE BRINGERS OF WONDER PTS 1 & 2, ALIEN ATTACK is BREAKAWAY and WAR
GAMES, COSMIC PRINCESS is THE METAMORPH and SPACE WARP, while JOURNEY
THROUGH THE BLACK SUN is made from COLLISION COURSE and BLACK SUN.

There was little that was offensive about DESTINATION MOONBASE ALPHA
or ALIEN ATTACK but I think fans are divided over the merits of
COSMIC PRINCESS and JOURNEY THROUGH THE BLACK SUN. For me, these
latter two have been the source of much amusement, as those keen to
voice their displeasure at the rather remarkably incompetent editing,
rearranging of music, and worst of all, the introduction of new
dialogue, never fail to raise a smile :-)

The 'status report' at the start of JOURNEY THROUGH THE BLACK SUN is
from NEW ADAM, NEW EVE.

I knew and watched Alien Attack and Destination Moonbase Alpha on
Home Video more than once or though more the former than the
latter..as I reguard 'John John the Wobbles are coming' as one of
1999 worst ever episodes.

I have seen Journey through the BlackSun I think for sale second
hand twice but have never brought or watched this compilmation of
stories. Cosmic Princess i found and brought from London Forbidden
Planet or as it was then known in the 1990's Forboding Prices. I
watched it once donating it to my then London Girlfriend who i think
had seen next to or none of season II 1999. I was somewhat so
disgusted with what i watched i just wanted to dump the video tape
somewhere fast!!

However i felt there was one thing in Cosmic princess that was of
interest and that was what they produced as a new opening title
sequence with i believe the dialog found on the screen of Season II
credits. I am not a particular fan of the season II opening sequence
and my then Girlfriend was amazed and disgusted to find out that the
dramtic opening of season I had gone with season II even though she
had to the best of my knowledge seen none of season II openings.

Mind you i have often joked said that what kindred put togather for
the first Fanderson Space 1999 documentary should be called the
Season III titke sequence!!

Thanks for the interest in this Hawk post.
Interesting that someone has posted that he sees a sort of Hawk,
Eagle squadron in that the Hawks attack and the Eagle are support
craft. As loathed as i am to say it i sort am left imaginging the new
Galatica with Viper and Raptor in this reguard. That post also made
me think of Babylon 5 and the Earthforce ferrycraft that carried i
think four or five Starfuries, although i cannot think of the episode
name for anyone to go and have a look. This then says that maybe we
would be left thinking such a craft existed out there somewhere to
carry a Hawk to and from the area of battle. Maybe a Superswift
without the podsection. Although i do not like that idea with that
craft one bit!!

I suppose when said and done i see the Hawk as more than a short
range fighter.. more middle distance mixed with that of a WWII
fighter whose range stretched out to almost half the Atlantic and
based on the fact that space is vast and that there would be
substanual periods of 'downtime' when nothing was happening crew well
being would be important to be sure that they performed at moments of
need and stress. I suppose i see the Hawks range as Jupiter or
Saturn before to go any further they would not have enough fuel to
come home. Afterall there was supposed to be somesort of base on Mars
and a space station of somesort in the orbit of Venus that would to
my mind say Earth would want to potect her interests whould needs
dictate.

The whole idea of what was inside the craft apart from some distant
images of chilhood imaginings was re-ignited when i saw a doc on the
Steath Fighter and the crew talking about what a typical misson was
and what was contained within the craft. I think this almost
certainly made me think of a set of bunks, basic table and fixed
chairs basic kitchen like you might get on a German WWII U Boat so a
very compact interior beyond the ships command module!!

As said when it comes to the uniform i see a typical 1999 design but
the sleeve and collor being Russian Kaki over typical western
colours. In being a fan costume maker i have speculated would a
millitary base on the moon have Camo spacesuits suitible to hide
someone on the lunner surface, a sort of 1999 spacesuit but in urban
camaflague. One of the problems with having specfica camflague
design is that if the location on an alien planets presents
different sceneary that you cannot equip a spacecraft for ever
planets local then the kamo becomes redundant that a return to
uniforms colours predating kaki become more the rule of the day!!

Hopefully. time permitting i will put some of this imagination of
mine into producing something physical by the end of the year in
producing what I see for a Dragon of GI joe figure.

Indeed when it comes to 1999 uniforms maybe i should put up in the
folders section the series of drawing i drew of how i felt 1999
uniform might develop.. that is if and whenever i get a scanner
working. Predominatly what i played with was female season II
uniforms..and with inspiration from StarTrek V and III i designed and
this is phsyically made up a Space 1999 army combat sweater look for
a comdr which i have jokingly once again called a season III uniform.

Hi!
Actually, I always saw the Hawk being a bit smaller than the Eagle
but that's really a personnal perception thing.
I never found any clear reference to its size, but I always saw it
more as somekind of space fighter/bomber while the Eagle was a mainly
a transport vehicle.
An old blueprint published in Starlog Magazine was showing the rear
half the Hawk'S body as a Fuel Tank, therefore, It would leave only
the froward half (the more skinny one) as possible living quarters.
Being a combat vehicle, it fits that the hawk has a much larger fuel
load than the Eagle, as it is bound to do more combat acrobatics.
Personnaly, I've always thought only the head of the hawk was fitted
to receive some crew and it was accessed by trapdoors like the ones
there are in the roof and floor of the Eagle's head.
But then again, this is only my perception.

As for the uniform, Kaki would indeed be great, a would stand out
from the Regular Alpha wardrobe!

I don't know if any others have ever considered this but i was

looking at close up shots of an original 1999 Hawk recently and it

ocurred to me where's the door...How do the crew get in? I could not

see looking at the paint job was there a clear and reconisable door

and docking port built into this design that we so know and love in

our Eagles..okay maybe it's camflagued but does anyone have any

thoughts were it is? i also no longer have an Airfix Hawks to be able

to exaim whether someone put that on that kit!

This then left me thinking if there is a door do the crew have a set

of steps to climb up as in the Eagle or do they scamble up the wings?

The return of Space:1999 in some form, be it a new 're-visualized' TV
show (à la the new Battlestar Galactica) or something that continues
directly on, or is a sequel to, in some fashion after the original,
is something I'd really love to see!

Whatever the case, any new show would have to change it's title from
1999 to either 2099 or 2199, I think that's a given. In my mind, the
most likely scenario a potential TV production company/station, etc.
would take is the full-on remake route. Might as well start at the
beginning again with a blank slate (and Breakaway would be such a
good story to see done again) rather than try and fill the audience
in on everything that happened in the original.

I'd imagine any new show would probably be similar to the original
style to a degree but with a modern, edgier look to it. I couldn't
see any of the 70s sets or costumes being seen again other than maybe
inspiration for the new. I also think any new CGI Eagles would
probably be designed with a sleeker look to them too.

One thing I know a new production team would want to emphasize is
better characterization and a much closer adherence to continuity,
logic and technical aspects as they wouldn't want the audience to
lose faith in a show's credibility. Gone are the days when these sort
of mistakes could slip by and go unnoticed by both viewers and
producers.

However intersting a new take on Space:1999 would be though, I still
think there's room for a retro-style approach to bringing it back if
a new version was/is unlikely. With DVDs able to reach dizzying
heights of sales and profits, could a direct-to-DVD series be a
viable option for a company perhaps?

Of course, failing a big company and investment of money for a new
show, what about a smaller approach? I'm sure some have seen the Star
Trek New Voyages or Star Trek Exeter fan-made productions? Has anyone
in fandom tried to make new material similar to what Trek fans have
done? Being new to online fandom I don't know if anyone has ever
tried to undertake such a project. Or is Space:1999 fandom simply too
small or too dispersed to make such a project viable?

And what about other areas of media such as audio or even comic book
adventures besides the fan fiction? Now I'm entering online fandom,
I'm very interested in seeing Space:1999 return...

Now I saw the COSMOS PRINCESS trailer for the first time!

I was positiv surprised that ALIEN ATTACK has now a Length of 110 minutes. This

While a fan-made online show would be fun ala the various StarTrek
fan shows, this avenue provides the best possibility for continuation.
Some suggestions would be a re-do of the Space 1999 tech manual,
maybe additions with some Hawk tech drawings, etc.
Put pen to paper people (or finger to keyboard) - you could be the
next Space 1999 author!!
Gotta go, got a great idea ...

Thanks, Ros, for the response-- and to Gillian A. I remember reading about
Destination: Moonbase Alpha in Starlog magazine just a few years after the
series was cancelled, but haven't ever seen that one. I thought the new footage
in Alien Attack was a little incongruous, but I understand why they did it,
since Alien Attack was being presented as a stand-alone movie. Interesting that
the status report in Journey Through the Black Sun was from New Adam, New Eve,
since they must have had the rights to this episode as well, and it was
apparently not part of Cosmic Princess...

Quite a few series have seen new life as movies after cancellation; Planet of
the Apes springs immediately to mind, and I believe episodes of The Starlost are
or were available on VHS from Amazon packaged as five 2-hour movies.

Distributors are always keen to milk what they can out of popular
television shows to make more and more money. Editing episodes
together to re-sell as movies is one of the options. The original

to movie theaters in the wake of STAR WARS which was hugely
successful worldwide.

Though they're by no means official, fan-written stories can also offer
interesting views on the show. You'll find a variety of stories in different
genres both at my own site at http://www.space1999fiction.com and Ellen

The Powys novels include novelisations of some of the original episodes, as
well as new adventures set during, between and after the two original
seasons. A great deal of attention is paid to their internal continuity, so
in that respect, they're even better than the real thing. :)

Plant of the apes used to be a TV series? I had no idea... when was that?

Starlog magazine just a few years after the series was cancelled, but haven't
ever seen that one. I thought the new footage in Alien Attack was a little
incongruous, but I understand why they did it, since Alien Attack was being
presented as a stand-alone movie. Interesting that the status report in Journey
Through the Black Sun was from New Adam, New Eve, since they must have had the
rights to this episode as well, and it was apparently not part of Cosmic
Princess...

The original
idea for DESTINATION MOONBASE ALPHA and ALIEN ATTACK was to sell them
to movie theaters in the wake of STAR WARS which was hugely
successful worldwide.

The 'status report' at the start of JOURNEY THROUGH THE BLACK SUN is
   from NEW ADAM, NEW EVE.

guessing these titles didn't have the widest release. Several years
ago I had VHS copies of ALIEN ATTACK and JOURNEY THROUGH THE BLACK
SUN released as "Sybil Danning's Adventure Video"; both featured an
introductory monologue by the scantily-clad starlet, and both were
heavily edited. ALIEN ATTACK contained a bunch of new footage
showing the International Lunar Commission in conference in the
aftermath of the breakaway, which may account for its length.
JOURNEY THROUGH THE BLACK SUN really startled me, since they have
edited audio from one of Helena's Year 2 Moonbase Alpha Status
Reports into it-- I believe it was the one from BRIAN THE BRAIN. Can
   anyone else confirm this?

I think that the Star Trek prequel may may only increase the nostalgia
for old sci-fi shows.

Bring on a Space: 1999 movie!

You're welcome John.

Yes, you're right about the lunar commission scenes in ALIEN ATTACK.
I've never been comfortable with them personally as they look cheaply
contrived. The sequence where the Chairman (Patrick Allen) tells one
of the others that Koenig is to "take over as Commander of Moonbase
Alpha", and is "already on his way", is clumsy and trite. Any
credibility is lost when he flips open the folder to show a
(publicity) photo of Koenig already there wearing his commanders'
tunic!

I guess it was a nice idea to try to show us what was happening on
the Earth-side of things, but it doesn't really work being far too
obvious that it was filmed several years after the the original
production. Interesting though that Marc Smith appears. He was no
newcomer to SPACE:1999, his instantly recognisable voice having
boomed from 'The Beta Cloud' and also the Croton computer in 'Dorzak'.

The rights would not have been an issue for ITC stealing clips from
episodes other than those used for the body of the movies, since they
owned the rights for them all anyway. What annoyed fans was that
they couldn't ever buy the episodes that made up the movies in their
correct format for around 15 years or so. If I remember correctly,
it was around 1997 that Polygram finally released 'Breakaway', 'War
Games' etc. to VHS in the UK.

The PLANET OF THE APES TV movies you mention have been broadcast
on ITV in the UK in recent years, however I have the FOX DVD set of
14, hour long episodes that you can buy (quite cheaply) from
Amazon.co.uk

PLANET OF THE APES first premiered in the UK on the ITV Network
starting Sunday 13th October 1974 approximately one month after its
US premiere, and ran until 19th January 1975. Reruns appeared in
most areas between 1975 and 1976.

Hmmm.... I certainly admire your optimism and I hope you're right but somehow, I
doubt that folks will automatically be ready for a Space: 1999 movie in light of
a Star Trek prequel. I would imagine especailly not the Trekkies. It was largely
Trekkies that ragged on our show when it first hit the airwaves! Anyway,
Trekkies from my observation, are way more fanatical than just about any fans of
any other sci-fi show.
Sadly though, if Ron Moore and crew were to get his hands on the show... we
wouldn't even recognize it anymore! It would be "SPNNNINO"(Space: 1999 In Name
Only!)
