Slinter
Thanks for this post as our computer crashed Jan 1st and i did not
fancy trailing my way through past posts through the online group
page!! Your observations on Dr Russell make her a much more
interesting character but I do not subscribe that she was unduely
wooden neither though was she over active in her performance in 1999,
or the best bit about it! However, it would of been useful that
somewhere in the series if it was televise that this character had a
lot to live up as the actress had decided in her madeup characters
history that her mythical father was supposed to of discovered the
cure for cancer. (This is recorded in an interview she did on one of
the Fanderson making of S99 tapes!)
I do subscribe to the idea is that she offers a good performance as a
Dr. in an SF series when most comparisons of a simular SF role all
tend to look to StarTrek. As a Doc she is certainily not medically
incompertant as Dr Bev Crusher. Having a medical background i have
seen Dr's working and although as a Nursing Auxillary it's to your
advantage to stay clear of Doc's less you have to. Both Dr's Vincent
and Mathais are somewhat too simular to Russel in manner and
performance..that when Mathais left Vincent should of had something
revolutionary different in his personality, that this is s definate
failing in the series. However, when it comes though to compertance
having a a medical background the Alphan Dr's(guest acting extras) in
the latter part of the series give more the aire of knowing what they
are doing over Bains perforance/acting
What, is so interesting which no one has mentioned is that ITC:America
according to recorded interviews on the Fanderson tapes on 1999 pretty
much forced her into being on the show on the production crew when she
was not particularly wanted...that suddenly when season II happens ITC
America is then wanting her removed and replaced by someone esle. The
same is also true of Carter's character. ITC:America wanted Catherine
Shell...which apparently did not go down well with Bain that
although(Shell) had been already chosen Gerry was forced to interview
a host of actresses to give the impression the job was not already
gone just to keep B.Bain happy!
