Both protagonists are not in control of their lives.
Both lose their love interest to a power controlling their lives.
Both go to great lengths to get her back.
Both are survivors.
Both seem to be like MacGyver.
Both are into art.
Both deal with real and fake art.
Both are just trying to live their lives.
Both seem to be at the mercy of higher powers.
Both are trying to prove their worth to people they meet.

But that's I think where the similarities end.

Tom has no team and no resources. Neal has a team and resources.
Tom's controllers are largely unknown. Neal's controller is his boss.
Tom has no sidekick. Neal has no sidekick.
Tom's love is either in plain sight or out of sight.
Neal's love is either on video or or on the phone.
Tom makes his own clues, except the palmtop.
Neal is always finding clues.
Tom is a loner and doesn't really like crowds.
Neal is a social butterfly and loves crowds.
Tom doesn't care about bad guys.
Neal likes to nab bad guys.

But seriously, I'd say its the authority figure complex - some one elusive up high, having some type of control over something you care about.  And just trying to get by in life, knowing there is something more important out there that you need to defeat in order to ultimately be reunited with that which you call happiness.

Right now BBC America is doing a Doctor Who marathon. The final ep is Saturday night. There's also a new show called Demons starting tomorrow that looks like it might be interesting.

These are the rules for the NwM-group. There aren't a lot of them, so
please be so kind to follow them.

OT (Off-Topic) postings are allowed. There are only two restrictions to them:

1-no abusive language
If you think someone badmouthed you, send a complaint to the moderator(s),
including the number of the post.
They will take the necessary actions.
2-no childish posts
     example: J:Yes D:No J answers:yes D answers:no and so on and on...
Posts like that work on everybody's nerves so please don't do it.
Most postings like these happen with political or religious dicussions.
So if a conversation as such takes place, be mindful of your response and
don't continuously rant or harp on your stance as if the world is centered
around you and you alone.

If these two rules get broken, these are the actions the moderators take:
First you get a warning.
If you continue, you get moderated.
If you still continue, you get kicked of the list.
We leave you the opportunity to join again.
But if you still continue after you joined, you will get banned.
And then don't come with the excuse that we didn't give you any second
chances...

Also remember to snip off long mailings for the people on daily digest.

Thank you for following these simple rules.
And if you have any more answers, don't hesitate to ask the moderator(s) or post
them on the group.

And I'm really glad to see that the group is being used.

Does anyone have any under-rated shows they want to share or think there are any good shows worth mentioning?

I happy to like Legend of the Seeker and my wife really likes Glee (which I find is kinda like taking Malcolm in the Middle's mom and making her the cheerleaders' coach who works with another teacher, a la Malcolm without the fourth wall, to run the glee club; very dysfunctional and really ridiculous but the kids are pretty inspiring despite some genuine drama, so it's an interesting mix...maybe Veronica will tell you how she reacted to it as far as why she likes it)

Tom's best friend dies. Neal's is alive.

(we'll have to wait and see on that one, too)

Hey Joseph/Veronica, and all others.  I just watched the first episode of White Collar.  Nicely done, and funny here and there.  The main character was that dude from Traveler.  And his character here reminded me of a cross between Adrian Monk and Michael Schofield from Prison Break.

I also recognized Tiffani-Amber Thiessen.  So different from here days in Saved by the Bell and 90210.

Miguel

interesting stuff!  i've had polenta, but no grits.  i have had gumbo (even Chunky soup has a version of gumbo available) and a local bar had jumbalaya on mardi gras and i liked it.  i always thought it was soup because that is what Newman ordered from the soup nazi, but the bar's version at least was more like a hot dish.

ah, well.  who's had lutefisk?

Waaaiiiitttt a second. Miguel, don't you live in Florida? You should be able to find grits at any Awful House (sorry, Waffle House) or just about any place that serves a Southern breakfast.

If you want gumbo, go to N'Awlins. That's where it's from. You can't find better.

We have a place here in town that has jambalaya, gumbo and all kinds of cajun stuff for breakfast and lunch. However, no muffaletta sandwiches (olive bread and a thick stack of Italian sliced sausage, ham and cheese). They do have grits and I had some this morning. My baby girl REALLY loves grits.

You can get them in the store by the way. Instant grits are with the instant oatmeal.

Grits and POLENTA are almost the same. Big difference is that grits are bleached polenta. Both taste the same but polenta is probably better for u.

Speaking of not knowing what grits were for years, the funny thing is that I have heard of the word "Gumbo" all my life and never knew what it was.  A friend tried it this year and told me.  Its a food from Louisiana.  Based on the description of it, it seems to be like the Dominican Sancocho but better.  I am on a quest to find a place that has Gumbo.  I found places on the internet that are in Manhattan but since I don't work in Manhattan anymore I haven't had a chance yet. :(

well, 'good'; not sure if i can say that.  i mean it was a late 70s sitcom, but more than whether it was good, i can say it was a slightly iconic show.  for starters, "Alice" was a single mom working as a waitress to raise her son (the son was the brother of Jo from Facts of Life in real life).  so it was kind of a sign of the times.  also - little known factoid, the sitcom was quite ironically a kind of spinoff from the Martin Scorsese movie "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore"!

but the show is best known for two of the best supporting characters in late 70s sitcoms - the cougar (before there was such a thing) Flo, a sassy Mae West type with signature line "kiss my grits" which is a pretty iconic phrase, though it's probably lessening in popular familiarity since the millenium as we get farther from the 70s.  but not to be overlooked is Vic Tayback's great role as the jerkish boss, Mel the Cook.
