I was a contestant in the local El Paso contest, and have to say that
this was the worst or most unprofessionally run contest I have
competed in. I'm not saying that because I lost,..... I made it to
the final round, out of 23 or 24 performers, and there were only 4 of
us remaining.. now I've been in bigger competitions than that, but
that is all that could write their own songs. Anyway,.. If one of the
remaining women had won, it would have been better, and ok. I would
have just congratulated her and been happy for her, but the guy who
did win...he was horrible, and messed up on the cover song that he
was singing, not just once either!!!... He stopped during the second
round, and just quit.... not even half way through the first verse,..
and then just said that he couldn't do it, and went on to his song.
Then in the third round, he messed up again, and not just once... he
had to restart, and then messed up throughout. Now I don't know what
kind of scale it was that they judged by, but I know that in other
competitions that I have been in, in Branson Mo., Okalahoma City,
Memphis TN., and Nashville.... if you mess up to where you cant even
finish the song...you done!!! So my question to ya'll is what's up
with that??? Review the tapes.... the contest was recorded both
second and the third round....Review them... and I hope to get some
kind of response.

Thank you,
Bill Babnick

Clint Black to Produce Winner's Solo Album with Sony Music Nashville

Los Angeles, CA, January 7, 2003 - USA Network has announced three of
the Nashville Star judges who will ultimately choose the winner of
the nationwide search for the next country music superstar,
premiering Saturday, March 8th on USA Network. The judges include
Columbia/Lucky Dog recording artist Charlie Robison, respected
country music journalist Robert Oermann, and Sony Music A&R executive
Tracy Gershon. Additional celebrity judges, who will serve on a
rotating basis for Nashville Star, will be announced shortly. The
host of Nashville Star will be television actress and host Kathleen
McClellan.

USA Network's Nashville Star is an upcoming television series
produced by Reveille, which is conducting a nation-wide grass roots
search for the next great country music artist. After holding 48
local competitions in conjunction with radio stations across the
country, Nashville Star has now narrowed the field from more than
8,000 to just 125 applicants. Nashville Star semi-finals have already
taken place in Los Angeles and Kansas City, MO. The competitions will
continue in Houston, Texas on January 8th, Baltimore, Maryland on
January 10th, and finish in Nashville, Tennessee on January 12th.

The top ten finalists selected from the regional competitions will
live together in a fully-wired Nashville house, where cameras will
record the friendships, squabbles, heartbreaks and intrigues that
develop during the course of the live, eight-week competition. The
grand prize winner of Nashville Star will receive a recording
contract from Sony Music Nashville.

Clint Black will serve as mentor to the contestants throughout
Nashville Star, additionally serving as producer of the winner's solo
album with Sony Music Nashville. Black's debut album Killin' Time
stayed at No. 1 on the country album charts for 28 weeks. Due in
large part to the album's four No. 1 singles, "Better Man," "Killin'
Time," "Nobody's Home," and "Walkin' Away," the album was certified
triple platinum. After a second successful album, Put Yourself in My
Shoes, Black was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry. After the releases
of The Hard Way and No Time to Kill, acting opportunities came
Black's way, and he appeared in the television series Wings, in the
film Maverick, and in the highly-rated CBS televison movie Still
Holding On: The Legend of Cadillac Jack. His other albums include One
Emotion, Greatest Hits, Nothin' But the Taillights, D'Lectrified, and
Greatest Hits II. Black and his wife Lisa Hartman were nominated for
a Grammy Award for their collaboration "When I Said I Do," which hit
No. 1 on the country charts and won an award from the Academy of
Country Music.

Columbia/Lucky Dog recording artist Charlie Robison keeps it all real
with a heartland/populist approach that blends his natural gifts as a
storyteller with a genuine affection for high-steppin' honky-tonk. He
is taking a break from the road as he and Step Right Up co-producer
Blake Chancey work on Robison's third Columbia/Lucky Dog disc, due
for a Spring 2003 release. Robison's version of "Don't Take Your Guns
To Town" was included on Sony Music's critically acclaimed all-star
Johnny Cash tribute album, released last September. As a recording
artist on the judging panel for Nashville Star, Robison will help
oversee the entire talent selection process.

Dubbed "the dean of Nashville's music writers," Robert K. Oermann is
a multi-media figure in Music City. As a TV personality, he is seen
regularly on the Country Music Television series Inside Fame and on
A&E's Biography. He is the Editor-at-Large of Country Music magazine,
is a weekly columnist for the trade publication Music Row, and has
been published in more than 100 other national magazines. In
addition, he is a writer/producer for television, writing scripts for
specials for such stars as Vince Gill, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Dolly
Parton. For Nashville Star, Oermann will utilize his vast knowledge
of country music to spot the best voices and songs in the
competition.

Tracy Gershon has extensive experience in the music industry, holding
positions at Backstreet/MCA Records, EMI Music, Sony/ATV/Tree,
Imprint Records and her own management company. Gershon was
responsible for signing acts such as The Mavericks, Joe Ely, Carlene
Carter, and James House, and joined the Fitzgerald-Hartley Management
Team as a partner. Gershon currently serves as an A&R Consultant at
Columbia Records for Sony Nashville, New York, and Los Angeles. With
her extensive experience in the record label and publishing
industries, Gershon in a unique position to encourage the contestants
of Nashville Star as they search for their own artistic style.

Kathleen McClellan first garnered national attention as Jerry's naked
girlfriend on one of Seinfeld's most memorable episodes. McClellan
has also guest-starred on the television series Fastlane, Two Guys
and a Girl, Arli$$, Suddenly Susan, and NewsRadio. She hosted
episodes of E! Entertainment's Wild On..., FYE, Celebrity Homes, and
Search Party. In addition, McClellan has served as a guest host for
Extra.

That's not the only thing that went on! My friend was a finalist at
the Houston regionals. 4 outta five finalist are in the TWELVE to go
to Nash. HHHmmm I thought the rules said TEN would go. My friend
received rave reviews from the judges at the regionals but wasn't in
the top five. Two of the top five, the judges said they were
straining too hard to sing and so on.
The top winner had ties with one of the judges. Here's the deal.
Sony wants people who want FAME so bad that they're willing to sign
away 100% of their talents to SONY. You were only supposed to do
2minutes of your original, but guess what, most pepolpe sang the
WHOLE song. The RULES have been altered on a DAILY, minute by minute
basis, to however it suited the producers and SONY. YOU ARE SO RIGHT,
THAT THIS CONTEST IS THE MOST RIDICULOUS SHOW I'VE EVER SEEN.

Country music is America's most popular radio format, reaching more
than 77 million adults (almost 40% of the population) on a weekly
basis. Many country music stations are the #1 radio station in their
respective markets, including many markets not traditionally known
as "country" markets. International country music sales also continue
to grow, with more and more country artists embarking on world tours.

1900 — 1920: Country music begins as "mountain music," telling
stories of hardship and heartache in the Appalachian and Old West
regions of the US.

1920s: With the introduction of radio, country music hits the
national airwaves. Beginning in 1925, performances are broadcast live
on Saturday nights from the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN.

1930s: The growth of the broadcast and recording industry and the
emergence of country singer/songwriters continues. Western/Cowboy
movies dominate the big screen and country music featured in films
becomes widely popular.

1940-1952: Nashville emerges as the mecca of country music. Western
Swing (country dance music), a blend of jazz, blues, and big band,
comes to the forefront. Bluegrass emerges with the influence of the
banjo. Hank Williams dominates the country music scene with his
freewheeling, fun loving, "honky tonk" get-up and dance music.

1953-1959: Country music is fused with rhythm and blues to create
the "rockabilly" sound. This style of music gains a younger audience
and becomes a national phenomenon, with top artists including Jerry
Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, and "The King of Rock `n Roll,"
Elvis Presley.

1960s: Nashville becomes known as "Music City USA." Country music
moves to the foreground with the "Nashville Sound," a mix of country
and pop music. Easy listening music dominates, with top artists
including Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, and Brenda Lee.

1970-1974: Country artists top both the country and pop charts for
the first time and have mass crossover appeal. Top artists include
Tanya Tucker, Olivia Newton-John, and Conway Twitty.

1972-1978: Country finally becomes "cool" and becomes a big hit on
many college campuses, with disaffected singer/songwriters leading
the pack. "Outlaws" (as they were called), including Willie Nelson
and Waylon Jennings, are known for breaking with big business in an
effort to do country music their own way.

1980-1985: Country culture invades the continent. Texas/Country bars
pop up in cities across the US, with patrons riding on mechanical
bulls, line dancing, etc. Country musicians are highly visible and
promoted extensively, with top artists such as Kenny Rogers, Emmylou
Harris, Alabama, and Dolly Parton going on extensive tours and even
being featured in Walt Disney specials. Urban Cowboy and Dolly
Parton's 9 to 5 top the box office.

1986-1990: Invasion of the "New Traditionalists." Country music
ventures back to its roots, with top artists including Clint Black,
Travis Tritt, Patty Loveless, and Reba McEntire.

1991-1995: Country music continues to incorporate pop music into its
sound, with artists such as Dwight Yoakam, Wynonna Judd, Vince Gill,
Tim McGraw, and Martina McBride leading the pack. With his big hat
and driving guitar, Garth Brooks establishes himself as the most
popular country music artist of all time, based on record sales and
worldwide concert venue.

1996-present: Country music grows its fan base to include a young
adult/teen audience willing to spend money both at the record store
and on concerts. Listeners alienated by the direction of modern rock
and rap began finding country a wholesome alternative. With the
growth of a young fan base, younger, sexier country artists emerge to
dominate both the pop and country music charts, including LeeAnn
Rimes, Shania Twain, Faith Hill, Lee Ann Womack, and The Dixie Chicks.

Hello,

From the first time I heard Buddy and Brandon sing I fell in love with
their voices. Actually I think that 10 of the 12 have star quality. Any of
them could make it and I would buy their music. I am a Patsy Cline fan so
of course I love Tasha.
I am looking forward to getting the Nastville Star CD this month. The song
selections were right up my alley. I love the "classic" country music and
really enjoyed this show.

Thanks for posting Lenore! All new members first posts are moderated,
but I've changed that for you. There are so many good contestants
aren't there? I've not decided on any faves just yet. But I agree
Tahsa, Buddy and Brandon are great!
