Hi Victoria,
Thanks! I will see if I can answer your question regarding The New
Avengers.
Apart from changing the formula from Steed and Talented Amateur - to
Steed and rookie agent – now it's Steed with two agent partners –
male and female.
I will preface this commentary by saying that this is most
certainly `not' The Avengers as we knew it. If you are looking for
Steed and Peel, or Steed and Gale, or even Steed and King – you won't
see much in common other than Steed. It would and should be judged,
viewed, and enjoyed on it's own as a separate program – with Steed as
the lynchpin that carries the name and style with him. The Avengers
history is known and followed by the cast and the storyline. Steed's
prior partners are respected, because they `were' Steed's partners.
That in itself gains them an immeasurable amount of respect and so
this new team can be respected in that they `are' Steed's partner and
they `are' that good. It just isn't the Avengers we knew. It is also
debatable if Steed should have been in the picture at all, unless it
was as a Mr. Waverly or an `M' type of character. That being said, I
will continue.
Steed's partners: Purdey (Joanna Lumley) and Mike Gambit (Gareth
Hunt).
Purdey, a leggy ex-ballerina, admittedly kicked out ballet school
because she was too tall, has a mysterious background. Her father was
an agent who was killed. It isn't known if Purdey is a first or last
name (it is never explained and there is no other name given). Her
specialty is a French savatte-style of kick-fighting, she can even
fight with her legs while on her back if she was knocked down. She
can dance in many styles and even demonstrates tap-dancing. She knows
judo and does some occasional throws, but very little punching. She
had punched and knocked out someone with one punch, so she isn't a
one-trick fighter. She is a marksman with a handgun and can pilot a
helicopter. She is a versatile agent!
Mike Gambit is an ex-paratrooper Major from the military. He is an
expert with handguns and rifles. He can shoot a rifle as well as
Steed can shoot a shotgun or trap-gun (they just have different
tastes in weapons). He usually carries several guns (usually 4 of
them) and brings in heavy-duty hardware on emergency situations, like
in Gnaws. He is an expert in judo and some other styles of fighting.
He tends to stand perfectly still, gauging his opponent, and strike
with lightning swiftness. He is a skilled race-car driver and
survivor - he crashed in every one of the races, like the Daytona
500. He can also pilot a helicopter.
Gambit has been known to do the seemingly impossible (or just
admittedly plain stupid stunts). Like; 1) taking a running leap at a
tree and striking it with both feet to knock someone out of the tree.
2) when his gun is out of ammo and he was faced with an armed
opponent, he drew his gun to `block' the fired bullet with the
handle. 3) Fighting a cybernaut and actually `denting' it. There are
others, but you get the idea, and he does get injured occasionally.
Gambit doesn't believe in being under-prepared, outgunned, and
outfought. Gambit has the 70's GQ-style charm with a working class
background, compared to Steed's old-world charm and more elegant
background.
Gambit is infatuated, adores, and protective of Purdey. Purdey is
amused and enamored with Gambit, but keeps his advances at bay. She
keeps his interest and she flirts – well they all flirt. Purdey is
almost as infatuated with Steed as Tara was. Steed adores Purdey and
is protective of her as well, but keeps her at bay as well. It is a
strange love triangle. If Steed wasn't in the picture, it would be
very much like Steed and Peel all over again. Steed, Purdey, and
Gambit have their separate little on-going dalliances, flirtations,
and conquests. Occasionally we get an insight on Purdey's past and
background, from the appearances of old boyfriends.
Gareth Hunt and Joanna Lumley went through an Olympic level of
physical training (documented in various interviews) to do stunts and
action scenes on their own; stunt people were used in only the
dangerous stunts. So even more than just choreographed, they tried
for as much realism of movement in combat, action scenes, and driving
as possible. Very un-Avengers like. So this pair was `much' more than
the typical pampered actors. They wanted to portray Purdey with the
grace and stamina of a professional dancer. Gambit was the tough guy
(like Jim Rockford in the Rockford Files or like Number 6 in the
Prisoner) who would shy away from no dangers and no fights – and they
came out of the action scenes as someone who had actually gone
through the motions – tired, sweating, and breathing hard – because
they had! Very un-Avengers like.
That is the general background of the show's cast.
I think all episodes were filmed in Paris and 4 of them in Toronto.
So the `first' thing you would notice is that they aren't in England
anymore. Another thing is there are lots of people around and lots of
activity. It's not the sparsely populated scenes like in the
original. There is a major change in the style of music and the
incidental music throughout the series, bringing it more up-to-date.
There are police, pedestrians, convenience stores, neighborhoods,
tour-groups, normal people, and traffic. In this respect, it is very
un-Avengers.
There are more car chase scenes, more gun fights, more hand-to-hand
fights, and more violence in general than the original Avengers. I
don't know if I would call it gratuitous though. Gambit poses in the
nude for an artist and there are bedroom scenes where Gambit and
Purdey are rousted out of bed for a mission – they seem to take turns
walking into the other's bedroom and waking them up. Very un-Avengers
like.
There is a lot of innuendo and banter, some is smoothly delivered and
some isn't, it's an individual's call. They tried to keep that
Avengers-like.
Steed is always proper and gentlemanly. After all, he is Steed.
Patrick said that he had to re-learn who Steed was, after all that
time had passed.
Purdey and Gambit are as dangerous and respected by the enemy as
were: Mrs. Peel, Mrs. Gale, and Tara King. The difference is that
they are a `really' dangerous team. Tara was a talented rookie agent
and the other two were very talented amateurs, but Purdey and Gambit
are highly trained and seasoned agents. They pursue relentlessly,
kill when they must, and casually move on to continue the case. And
we are led to believe that both worked with Steed for a good bit of
time `before' the first episode was broadcast.
So when Purdey and Gambit are adventuring together or solo, one may
hope for a `Steed and Peel'-like program. But they aren't Steed and
Peel. Occasionally you may experience a little of the original
Avengers magic, but most of the time you will experience the New
Avengers magic.
You really have to watch it for yourself, to be able to judge it
fairly and not become biased by this commentary. I enjoy watching it
and you may too.
If you have other questions, I will do my very best to answer them as
fairly and honestly as possible.
Thanks,
Cal
Since I haven't seen The New Avengers, I would like to know how
different it is from the original. I am sure it is more violent
since the 1970's is more gratuitous, but would the "average" Avengers
fan appreciate it or would you have to view it by itself in it's "own
right".

And the price just went up again......

Hello all,
I contacted A&E to see if they would be releasing "The New Avengers"
(along with other programs) on DVD in the future. Apparently and
unfortunately not. Pity... I only have them on VHS and I'm missing a
few episodes, so I'm anxious to get it all on DVD!
If you have information of a U.S. connection for the DVDs (preferably
in U.S. Region 1 format) please let me know. I was going to wait for
A&E, but it seems that there's no point. If you have purchased "The
New Avengers" on DVD's, please let us know more about it. Quality,
content, price, features, location, etc.
Thanks and best wishes to all!

Hello all,
I have just loaded some new files into the Agent Dossier!
Gambit's Tidbits - A collection of factoids that I collected from

Gambit's cars, Gambit's Awards, and many other things.
WWGD? or WDGS? - A collection of quotes from all the episodes that I
have in stock. (There are a few I don't have, so if you can help,
please let me know.) I am looking for information from: Trap,
Obsession, Medium Rare, Complex, Forward Base, and Emily. Any help

I thought it would be an interesting topic to see what awards,
medals, and honors that various Avengers have received.
The first I have identified is from 'K is for Kill' - Steed received
the Siberian Star, Gambit received the Mongolian Medal, and Purdey
received something about Little Mothers and tractors, etc. All very
silly indeed. And Steed mentioned, that he wondered what MI5 would
say about this - receiving Russian awards. Noting that they would
raise eyebrows over it (but 'not' that he worked for MI5).
I know that some things like that are made up (like addresses and
towns), but I did some digging.
The Siberian Star wasn't referenced (at least regarding 'awards'),
but the Mongolian Medal 'does' exist - it is for 'Distinction in
Protecting the Public Order (Medal for Selflessness)'. I found a link
to a picture of it that I loaded into Gambit's Photos page.
The award picture that I found it is from here, with other images:
http://myhome.hanafos.com/~czar94/Medal/Asia/Mongol/MONGOLIA.htm
Considering that Gambit had both hands injured as a result of the
mission, and their effort protected their public order, the medal
fits.
I would 'guess' that the Siberian Star is suposed to be like their
Medal of Honor. Considering he survived an assasination attempt and
organized the group to a successful mission, that fits too. There is
a badge called 'Honourable Employee of Counterespionage' which would
have been more fitting.
Another site with lots of images of medals and badges are in:
http://nkvdcollect.narod.ru/
Regarding Purdey's, I would guess that they aren't 'used' to awarding
women medals for uncommon bravery. I couldn't find the one that
Purdey received, however there were some for mothers or for
agriculture. 'Little Mothers' indeed! Purdey's smirk about the
chauvanism of the situation spoke volumes but she accepted it with
grace.
But the Mongolian Medal appears to be an authentic one and Gambit was
awarded it. (Now a part of New Avengers canon).
If you are aware of other awards, medals, or honors - please let me
know!

Hi Anna,
I am 'assuming' that you are viewing the "Yahoo! Group" pages, the
same as I. And I hope you are. <grin>
If not, please let me know. And please bear with me, I don't know if
you see the same page layout. It may appear differently due to
different internet browsers or somehow translated with different
languages. (I just don't know.)
If so (And I hope it does), on the left side of the Groups page, you
should see the links to: Home, Messages, Chat, Files, Photos, Links,
Database, Polls, Members, etc. If you see that, then we are in
business!
If you click on 'Photos' it should bring up another page which shows
the folders: 'New Avengers Photos', 'Gambit and Purdey Photos',
and 'Gambit Photos'. Click on those folders and it will display the
picture in those folders. You can view, download, and add photos from
there.
If your layout doesn't show all of that, don't give up! There is yet
another way is accessing the pages.
The URL to Photos is:
http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/Mike_Gambit/lst
If you click on 'Files', there will be folders for categories that I
set up. You may find some things of interest there too. (I am working
on more to add soon.)
The URL to Files is:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Mike_Gambit/files/
The URL to Links is:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Mike_Gambit/links
The URL to Polls is:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Mike_Gambit/polls
If this doesn't get you the pages you want to see, please let me know
and we will try to get this sorted out somehow. But I hope this will
get you to the section you want.
Enjoy! And thanks!
Cal
Hi Cal
where can we see those photos?
I haven't seen "Bloodbath..." but I assure you that
"licensed ti kill " is awful. If it wasn't for Gareth
if would throw the tape out of the window righht now.
Anyway...Gambit has always been my favorite character
.

Hi Kimberly,
You are correct that it wasn't on the list, but the original name of
the movie was "Licensed to Love and Kill" (1979) as Charles Bind
... aka "The Man from S.E.X.".
I may need to add the 'aka' alternates to the poll selection.
From what I read about it from Gareth's interviews, it sounds like a
movie that would be amusing to watch. He was in a couple of fairly
dangerous stunts that were cut from the movie.
Thanks!
Cal
Hi Cal,
Gareth Hunt did play in a movie called, "The Man From S.E.X.", I
have a copy of that movie. It like a spy movie, but not a porn
movie. Anyway that was omited from the polls.
Kimberly

Hello Kimberly,
(Follow up to prior email)
Thank you, Yes! I will be happy to receive any contributions! Via
email or snail-mail. Magazines, photos, Xerox copies of articles, or
anything!
Anyone can contact me privately at: CalWestray@... and I will
send you my mailing address. I will be happy to reimburse you for
copying and mailing costs. I will also promptly return anything that
is wanted back, after I've scanned it - and giving credit to the
source of the material.
I am searching through my collection of Avengers material, looking
for Gambit references and articles. And I am scanning, fixing, and
loading them as quickly as I can.
Check the 'Files' section to see any new articles, dosiers, and fan
fiction I've loaded.
Check the 'Photo' section to see and new pictures and artwork I've
loaded.
Check the 'Links' section to see all the Gambit related websites that
I've located.
Please feel free to send anything that you think will be interesting,
amusing, and/or entertaining.
If you have an idea for a 'Poll', send me the idea and I will put it
together.
Thanks and stay tuned!

I have some magazines in my Avengers collection of Gambit. I can
post them to you, since my scanner is not working. Mostly it is
Gambit's Bio. And as growing up as a young girl in the 1970's
the "Purdey"'s hairdo was in and I had a couple of short bobs. :-)
And I have the slides to prove them!

Dear me, no, David!
This is the poem by Howard:
He went less for champers than scotch
At times, the mission he'd botch
But I must say, dammit
That our hero Gambit
Always stood out in the crotch
Fairly tame, I thought...
What can be found in Mike_Gambit Group?
1) Lots of links.
2) Sections in 'Files': Agent Dosier, Fan Fiction (for stories and
poems), Gambit Icons, and News Articles.
3) Sections in 'Photos': Gambit Photos (with a Gambit wallpaper),
Gambit & Purdey Photos, and New Avengers Photos.
I try to add more each day. Stay tuned!

Oh dear. I Hope it doesn't start "There was a man called Gareth Hunt ... " Joanna was on The Mrs. Merton Show (Caroline Ahern dressing up as an elderly northern lady in a mock Talk Show) once and Mrs. Merton said she knew a limerick about Gareth Hunt. "Why do I NOT want to hear it!", laughed Jo.
Hello David,
Thank you very much! I preferred the shorter look for Purdey, short
skirts and short tresses.
I decided that if I was going to give this Group a go, that I would
at least give it my best effort. If it doesn't work out, it doesn't.
I have searched through all my stuff and posted any Gambit pictures I
found, some neat links, some neat icon and desktop stuff, and some
articles that I could find. I am still searching magazines and
scanning in what I can find about Gambit.
Howard even provided some poetry for me.
I invite others to locate and post 'anything' they desire involving
Gambit. Anything about Gambit 'positive or negative': art, writings,
stories, poetry, etc.
When I started out, I knew there was a lot of good and bad press and
opinions about Gambit. And I wanted to provide a forum where everyone
can contribute items, showing him in a good 'and' bad light.
What I wanted was a humorous slant on Gambit, not a 'serious and
positive only' tribute site.
Gareth Hunt wanted Gambit to be fallible and humorous character, like
a 'Jim Rockford' type (of the Rockford Files). In this, I think he
succeeded very well. I also think that Gareth would prefer to see a
site that presented Gambit in a humorous vein and not a serious one.
With any luck, Gareth may even spot this Group and visit it. If so, I
would 'love' to have him say 'Hi' and chat awhile.
If you have any ideas to improve this Group, please let me know.
I am also looking for ideas for a poll that we can do.
Thanks again and welcome one and all!

Hello all!
I have added a few photos of Gambit and The New Avengers.
I have also added some links to Gambit sites. Some are very amusing.
If you have any photos to add or know of any interesting links,
please feel free to add them at your leisure.
Thanks,
Cal Westray
Greetings!
Welcome to my modest little group, a tribute site for Mike Gambit
(AKA Gareth Hunt). Here we can unashamedly discuss Gambit, pros or
cons.
I plan to add some pictures of Gambit (or group images of The New
Avengers) to the site very soon.
I will do my best to respond to all inquiries as quickly as possible.
Thanks to all, and again, welcome!
