This seems a nicer episode than the "Possession" one I was working on
last week, but please do not spoil the ending for me, as I like to
watch it while translating! I've stumbled on a sentence by Green,
discussin the Browning 9mm which has been confirmed as the murder
weapon. He goes: "...wiped clean. Latent got a partial on the clip,
but so far no hits".
This is a multiple riddle to me.
1) Does "wiped clean" mean the serial number has been scraped off or
just that it was cleaned for good after using it? It might be the
second meaning, as later on Van Buren asks about serial numbers an ìd
Green answers "they were filed down, lab's trying to raise them"...
Why would she ask him that if she knew the pistol had been wiped
clean? (I suppose "filed down" means "scraped off" and "raise them"
means trying to recover them, am I wrong?)
2) What does "latent" mean?
3) What's a "partial on the clip"?
I'll go back to translating, hope someone remembers this episode
(guest starring Gary Busey and Joe Piscopo!),

And here I am again, one year later, with something I can't quite
understand. The episode is called "Possession". It's not major
points, though, but I'd be grateful if anyone had light to shed on
these:
1) Sutherlin is asking for remand of the defendant, whose lawyer
snaps back: "My client wants to testify in the Grand Jury - defense
is serving cross-grand jury notice". What would a "cross-grand jury
notice" be? Is it just that the defense is asking the case to be
brought in front of the Grand Jury? Why would that be? I mean, where
would the advantage be for them?
2) Sutherlin is talking to McCoy who says: "We get the indictment
now, we can avoid a one-eighty-eighty release". What exactly is that?
3) This is nothing legal. Braden, the real estate agent of the
defendant, claims he has mentioned to her "a ball-park figure". For
"Ball-park" figure I can only find the meaning of "Baseball field"...
does this mean an approximate figure, or something else?
Thank you in advance!

310/551-1035 Questions?
Hello again, here's another list of doubts!
1) I just came across an expression I don't understand. What does
C.I. stand for? The situation is, a plainclothes detective has a
"punk c.i." that allows him into the drug dealers world, so I suppose
it's ome kind of informer...
2) Briscoe and Green are looking for a suspect, and Briscoe says:
"Twelfth time's a charm". I have no clue as to what that means...
Does that mean after 12 tries to get the right person they finally
got it?
Nothing really important, as you can see -but they bug me anyway! :-)
Alberto
Hello again. As I said, I am now working on a new episode, which is
interesting because it starts off with Briscoe and Green working on a
20-years-old case (because Van Buren's job is in jeopardy due to a
low clearance rate on homicides).
The first doubt I have is on some kind of jargon expression (I
think). An old cop B&G are interrogating on an old case says he was
demoted because he disagreed with the lead detective over who the
suspect was. He says: "I went over his head to a Captain, a week
later, I'm walkin' a foot post in Washington Heights. Could've got
back on the squad if I'd wanted, but the truth is, I'd rather be in
uniform. Too much politics in bein' a detective". My problem is with
the "foot post"... what does "walkin' a foot post" mean? I take is
some kind of humbler assignment as opposed to being a detective, but
it beats me...
Also there's a character called "Paralegal" who says "Every do-gooder
in town's jumping on the Sarno bandwagon... Amicus briefs on the
motion to suppress. AA, ACLU, AMA". I know who these last three
acronyms are, but "Amicus"? And what exatly would a paralegal be?
