I can see both sides of the argument.  I think he probably did get some pity votes.  I also see a strong argument in the fact that he's a genuinely funny guy.  I think it's a combination of both and there's nothing wrong with that.  As a professional comedian myself, I'll throw some other things into the mix, though.  Here are some basic comedy principals that Josh employed extremely well.

1)  You have to sell yourself BEFORE you can sell your material.  If you're a genuinely likeable person on stage and you look like you're having fun, the audience will reciprocate.  There is a tendency in comedy for the audience to assume the attitude of the comedian.  Josh is able to use that to his advantage.  He comes out making fun of his affliction, which allows the audience to associate with him and feel free to laugh.  Audiences have always loved comedians who don't take themselves too seriously.  Some people might confuse this with pity votes, but it's actually that the audience felt comfortable to laugh when Josh was on stage -- not pity.

2)  Address the obvious and talk about what you know, what you've experienced.  The reason Josh did so much material on his disability is because that is his life.  Why did Richard Pryor do so much material on drug use early on?  Why does Jeff Foxworthy do so much redneck material?  It's because this is what they know best, it's they're personal experiences and that's always the funniest thing to you.  Don't fault Josh for doing that, he's able to make it funny.

3)  Start your set with something personal to the audience.  In every town I play, I begin my set by talking about something local.  I'll drive around town before the show and write material about quaint places I see or situations (like traffic or construction going on in the area).  I'll begin by talking about where they live or how they live, etc.  This endears the comedian to the audience and sells YOU before you try to sell your prepared material.  Notice that every set Josh did, he began by talking about the competition.  "The blackberry Gabriel had was mine; so was (can't remember her name)'s baby."  He got personal.  It was like he was letting the audience in on the behind-the-scenes action.  They loved that.  No one else did that.  That was extremely smart on his part.

I'm sure there are other comedians, who study the art of comedy also and are much smarter than I am, who could point out other things, but I thought I'd throw these into the mix and see what develops.

Keep live comedy alive and go visit a local comedy venue.  It can only be good for all of us comedians.

I thought that early on since his whole act seemed to be about his disability (even though he was still funny), but he has definitely proven himself as a comedian and is a funny guy!  He was hilarious on the boat!

I agree!  On a group I’m on for people with CP an argument came up that he won by pity votes.  I don’t agree.  He’s naturally funny.  Just watching the show when they were on the boat was enough to see that.

Segregated 'Survivor'

Players will begin 'Cook Islands' game divided by race

August 23 2006

Jeff Probst
'Survivor' host Jeff Probst
The 13th edition of "Survivor" will have the show's most diverse group of players to date, CBS says. At the start of the game, though, they won't be mingling all that much.

After previous editions in which contestants were divided by gender or age, "Survivor: Cook Islands," which premieres Thursday, Sept. 14, will stick its hand firmly on a very hot button and set up its tribes along ethnic lines. The 20 players will initially be divided into four groups based on their ethnicity -- Hispanic, African-American, Asian-American and Caucasian. The tribes will merge at some point later in the game.

The announcement was made on CBS' "Early Show" Wednesday morning, and anchor Harry Smith voiced what maybe you're thinking right now: Is this a good idea?

"I think at first glance, when you just hear about it, it could sound like a stunt, especially with the way reality [TV] has gone," "Survivor" host Jeff Probst told Smith. "But that's not what we're doing here. The idea for this actually came from the criticism that 'Survivor' is not ethnically diverse enough. ... We said, 'Let's turn that criticism into creative for the show, and I think it fits in perfectly with what 'Survivor' does. It's a social experiment, and this adds another layer to the experiment."

The new season will keep the "Exile Island" wrinkle from last spring's "Survivor: Panama," in which at least one person is separated from his or her teammates in each episode. The exiles will have a chance, though, to find a hidden immunity idol that they can use to save themselves at a Tribal Council session.

The 20 players range in age from 23 to 45 and include a heavy-metal guitarist, a cop, a couple of showbiz types and an attorney. Here's a bit about each of them:

The Last Word on Last Comic Standing
by Raven Snook
Josh Blue by Chris Haston/NBC
Josh Blue is the Last Comic Standing.

The laughter finally died on Last Comic Standing when self-declared spastic stand-up Josh Blue was named the winner. Still, everyone involved with the show is smiling, as the fourth edition of NBC's comedic contest has earned solid ratings and has already been renewed for a fifth round, to air in the summer of 2007. Blue himself is elated (if still stunned) about his victory. (Even competitor Ty Barnett is fine with his runner-up status.) TVGuide.com called the competitive cutups to joke around about their respective runs.

First, Josh....

TVGuide.com: Let me begin by posing a question I'm sure no one else has had the guts to ask you. How's it feel to be the Last Comic Standing?
Josh Blue:
It's beyond words. It hasn't sunk in yet really.

TVGuide.com: Ty was convinced you were going to win from Day 1. Did you feel the same way?
Josh:
Everyone was telling me that it would be me, but I didn't know. It's so weird. I knew I was doing well and that I had a good shot at it. But it's a game show, and it's up to people to vote. Initially I was hesitant even to audition for the show.

TVGuide.com: How come?
Josh:
Because I had been rejected the first time I tried out for [the second season of] Last Comic Standing. I waited in line in 15-below weather in Chicago for six hours. When I got in there, I did about one and a half jokes before they were like, "Thanks." It was frustrating because I knew I was funny. I may be a better comic now, but I was funny then, too.

TVGuide.com: I guess you had a better experience at the second audition.
Josh:
Well, there was a little bit of buzz about me. They knew who I was that time. It worked out great.

TVGuide.com: Is your live act any different than what we saw on TV?
Josh:
I like to swear.

TVGuide.com: You?
Josh:
F--k, yeah. It's like a condiment. It adds a little flavor to the jokes. But I'm never vulgar or over the top. As you've seen, I'm very self-deprecating. I only really make fun of myself.

TVGuide.com: What's up next for you?
Josh:
I plan on hitting the road very hard and performing as many shows as I can around the country. It's going to be funny. I'll be able to razz other comics: How bad at standing are you that I was named the Last Comic Standing? You got beat by a cripple. I definitely wasn't the first comic standing. I didn't walk until I was 15.   hee hee

And now, Ty....

TVGuide.com: At the beginning of your very last set, you said, "I don't know how this night is going to turn out... but I'll be happy to wish Josh congratulations." Were you that sure he was going to win?
Ty Barnett:
There were unborn children who knew that Josh was going to win.  rolling on the floor

TVGuide.com: Well I must be dumber than an embryo because I really thought you'd snag the crown. I always saw you as the contest's dark horse.
Ty:
[Laughs] That's a racist statement, by the way.

TVGuide.com: OK, so when did you first realize that Josh would be the victor?
Ty:
I knew when he made it into the house. How can people not vote for the guy who is funny and has cerebral palsy? The only person who could have beaten him was Stephen Hawking — and even that would have been close.

TVGuide.com: All that said, you must have been a little bummed when you lost.
Ty:
Honestly, I never had any intention of winning. I just wanted to leave my mark on comedy. I wanted people to watch me and say, "That Ty Barnett dude is hilarious." When I woke up the day after the finale, I thought, "Man, it would have been cool to win." But then I went down my checklist: Did I have fun? Yes. Did my act improve? Yes. Did I leave people with a lasting impression? Absolutely. I still have people e-mailing me about jokes that I did a month ago.

TVGuide.com: So what's your next move?
Ty:
Now everything falls on my agent and manager. I got on the phone with them after the show and said, "I've given you guys tons of TV exposure, I look good on camera, I take care of myself.... Do not f--k this up."

TVGuide.com: Are they racist?

Ty: Maybe, but the biggest color they're worried about is green.  money eyes

MiG, one of the final three finalists on CBS's Rock Star: INXS, has signed his first record deal, Universal Music Classics Group has announced.

MiG's self-titled debut CD is due in January on Universal's Decca imprint. The album will feature covers of songs including Seal's "A Kiss From A Rose," David Bowie's "Life On Mars," The Police's "Wrapped Around Your Finger" and Green Day's "Wake Me Up When September Ends."

The first single, "Baby I Love Your Way," featuring a guest performance by Peter Frampton, is already available for download on Yahoo!

Born in the Philippines and raised in Australia, MiG (full name: Mig Ayesa) lived in London for several years, where he appeared in the musicals Rent and We Will Rock You, featuring the music of Queen. He also recorded a 4-song EP, The MiGnition Project, with Queen guitarist Brian May on one of the tracks.

From there it was on to Los Angeles and Rock Star: INXS. He finished performing with the cross-country "Rock Star: Supernova" tour.

As some of you know, our daughter has Autism. Currently, 1 in 166
children are diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum. According to a May
2006 Time Magazine article, three times has many children are
diagnosis with an Autism Spectrum Disorder as Juvenile Diabetes, yet
Autism gets 1/5 of the research funding. I passionately believe we
need to address this situation, both for our daughter Veronika and the
millions of children and adults world wide who have this disorder.

On Oct. 15th there will be a world wide walk to raise Autism Awareness
and scholarship funds for people to go the the Autism Treatment Center
of America. We were at the treatment center last month and are very
excited by their program. We met people for 23 states and 10
countries. As I said this walk is world wide: UK, China, Australia,
etc. and of course the US: Coast to coast.

To register to walk or give a secure donation online, just go to:
http://www.walkaroundtheworld.org/ All donations are tax deductible.
Please find a team to join or support with a donation! I am the team
leader for Gettysburg, PA. There is a Yahoo email address:
gettysburgwaw@... While the website indicates that this is a 10K
Walk, we have opted to make it a 5K Walk to avoid interfering with
tourism and to make the walk more accessible to as many people as
possible. After joining a team, walkers will need to let your team
leader know what t-shirt size that you prefer(WAW only has Large and
Extra Large available for order).
Depending on when walkers originally sign up to walk, t-shirts may or
may not be here in time for the walk, but everyone will get a t-shirt
eventually.

Please forward this email! Thank you for your time and consideration!
Peace be with you!---Nicole

He’s been on my friend’s list since he was first on the show’s tryout episodes.  My daughter has cerebral palsy so he’s a real inspiration.  He’s a good guy – even replied to my messages – back when.  He has a little boy now – real cute.  He has pics on his site too of the baby.
