Hey there,

I see that, so far, the votes are going for Judy in this pole. She was my
first thought, and, as a grown up little boy, I think I would enjoy seeing
the beautiful Judy more involved in adventures, perhaps taking charge and
getting Willsmithrobot out of some scrapes. Of course, it almost follows
that Don might get some extra screen time as well, as Judy would most
certainly be demanding some attention from him, presumably onscreen!

But, as a genuine little boy of 1965-69, I think I would have liked to see
Penny more involved, as she and Will were closer to my age at the time. I
loved Angela Cartwright anyway, and it would have been a kick seeing her in
more adventures like "My Friend Mr. Nobody," but, more importantly, in some
stories where she was sharing the adventure with others, perhaps even
Willsmithrobot!

Terry,

Hi folks --

It's great to see a new list devoted to "Lost in Space." I'm glad to
be part of it, as a participant and as a moderator. (This weekend, I
will write up an intro similar to the intros that all of the new
members have been submitting.)

I would like to alert you to the new Poll that was just put up at the
Promised Planet. The question was submitted by Jade Bridge. She
asks:

"Sometime during Season One, the plots of 'Lost in Space' began to
concentrate on Will Robinson, Dr. Smith, and the Robot. Which of the
other regular characters do you wish had been FEATURED MORE OFTEN in
the episodes?"

To vote, please go to:

http://www.promisedplanet.com/cgi-bin/Poll.pl

Thanks, and have a great Labor Day!

Agreed. The trend started getting out of control in the second season, but
there's a case to be made here for it having roots in the first season. Take a
look at "The Raft." Will and Smith completely dominate that episode. Okay, the
Robot wasn't that involved, but he's the one that pulled the rope ("You said
cast
off!"). "War of the Robots" starts out with the three of them bantering back
and
forth while fishing. And then there's the episode (I forget which) where the
three of them are together and the Robot is digging the trench that Smith is
supposed to be digging. They hear John and Don, and Smith quickly switches
places with the Robot to make it appear he is doing the work. Will doesn't say a
thing, right? The writers were establishing a pattern based on character
development and chemistry that they saw working. It may not have been as
blatant
as later on in seasons two and three, but the groundwork sure seemed to be
setting up.

Speaking of Lunar Models, I was cruising around the net and went over to their
website a few days ago. They are having a HUGE half price blowout clearance
sale on a lot of stuff that they're going to be discontinuing. Included are
three of their (normally) very expensive Lost in Space kits (Don West, Will &
Smith, Deluxe Will & Smith) included -- which, at half off, well, still doesn't
make them inexpensive, but they say that after October 1st, these kits will no
longer be available.

Below is a link to go there if you want to check them out. Once there, the
BLOWOUT SALE link on the left side of the screen gives a complete text only
listing of the sale items. If you want to see what they look like, hit the
"Product Catalog" link when you get there. The kits are pricey, but very well
done.

EXCUSE ME, but Will Robinson, Dr. Smith, and the Robot episode plot
concentrations didn't start until sometime during Season Two! I just needed
to correct this erroneous comment from Miss Cindy Lillibridge in Rhode
Island. By the way, is Cindy on this list too? I don't think so...

Welcome back, Llessur! Glad you made it to the plains. We have an all-new
list, complete with a new title. This is cool! It may take me a little
while to get back in the swing. Just as this week, I've been trying to cut
down on list stuff. So, please forgive my lukewarm reception to the list.
Make no mistake, though, I think it is great that the old/new list is back!
I missed it. There is something very special (and perverted) about this
list. I missed it very much, just like Jeanette and Wyoming.

I never did this so, without further ado....

Member Information
- Your name: Russell aka Llessur aka The Anti-Moderator
- Your approximate age: 36
- Geographic location: Portland, IN (between Muncie and Fort Wayne)

Additionally, answer the following:

- When and how did you first become interested in LIS?
I remember watching it on Channel 30 in St. Louis after I got home from
elementary school. It was on early enough for me to watch. I found Star
Trek a few years later at a later timeslot. I guess right off I thought
of Lost in Space as a "family" show and Star Trek as an "adult" show. I
remember thinking Star Trek was boring.

- What's your favorite episode (and why)?
Well most of the old timers will know this already, but I would have to
say my favorite episode is The Great Vegetable Rebellion. It has all the
cast, it is in color, and it is inherently logical yet also fantastic.
Yes, Smith turning into a stalk of celery IS bizarre, but...any more so
than pirates or sheiks or banditos in space? In fact, because it was
nothing like anything else I had ever seen before or since (not a circus,
department store, beauty pageant, zoo, Vikings, etc just moved out into
outer space) it still holds a warm place in my heart. Plus it has a
fairly straight-forward plot and doesn't wander off into Smith-Robot-Will
shenanigans at anytime. Any episode with that dramatic John Williams
"danger theme" in it was okay with me, though!

- What's your least favorite episode (and why)?
I can remember not liking the episode where Will has to kiss a sleeping
princess to wake her up so her race can conquer the Robinson's planet.
That one never held my interest too well, but if I were to see it again
now that I'm all growned up it might be nicer. I can remember hating The
Toymaker episode because Smith is turned into a toy. sheesh! In fact, I
can remember watching the second season cliffhangers anxiously to see
what the next episode would be; a good one, which I would run home from
school not to miss, or "a clunker" where I often didn't even watch after
the first few times. In general I like the first and third season
episodes best; the second season episodes the least.

- Why are you still a fan?
I'm not. I hate this crap. :-) Actually, nowadays I'm more a fan of the
IDEA of Lost in Space than the execution. The Innovation comics were the
"best" versions of the Robinson Family saga in my opinion. Now as a
writer/creator myself too often when I watch the episodes I just shake my
head and think, "What were they thinking?"

- What's your most unforgettable Lost in Space memory?
I forget.
Oh, it must be stapling two paper plates together and playing Lost in
Space. I also had a craft book when I was a kid and used the paper doll
outlines to make my own Robinsons. I would mix and match uniforms (I
liked Maureen and John AND Don in green; except for John and Maureen I
had everybody in their third season uniforms. (Partly because I didn't
have a "rust/brown" crayon that did Don's and Will's second season
uniforms justice!) I would make my own monsters up, too, but never had
much luck drawing the Robot. I still suck at it; he's just too complex
for my "manga" style of drawing to get a grip on. :-(
Either that or going to the hobby store every weekend to stare at the
Aurora Lost in Space Robot model kit the old guy (Pete) had for sale. I
stared at the box not only because the kit was cool, but because it had a
picture of the first season cast in COLOR. I tried to memorize the colors
of their clothes so that when I watched the b&w episodes I could "see"
their uniforms in the correct colors. Except for Penny's off-yellow suit,
though, I never really succeeded. I eventually bought the kit and tried
to make it, but although I did the best job I could it was nowhere near
as cool looking as the real thing. And I knew my limitations well enough
to know that even if I painted it, it never would. I never tried to make
another Robot again.

- Anything else you'd like to share:
In my life I have had a crush on EACH of the Robinsons party except for
Dr. Smith. I wanted to BE Will (I have two elder sisters, one blonde and
one brunette), and then I wanted to grow up and be (or be with) either
Don or John. I started off liking Penny, then moved on to Judy, and then
Maureen! Until/unless I get really old and desperate I can't imagine
Smith as a companion of ANY sort, though! haha!

Okay, there I am in a nut (shell). It's good to be back! I've got myself
settled into the plains of the US and I'm ready to anti-moderate our
conversations about LiS! Let's have at it!!!

Just in case some of you may not know, our friend Barry (aka "The Keeper") is
the owner of the very fine LostinSpace@YahooGroups list (the oldest and largest
LiS email list around), as well as the co-founder (along with our very own Ms.
Effra) of what is one of the finest, classiest Lost in Space websites on the net
-- "Lost in Space at The Promised Planet," which by the way, is located at:

http://www.promisedplanet.com

Hopefully, the weekly Promised Planet Polls will continue to spark lively,
thought-provoking discussions here on the new list, as they have done in the
past. And like you Barry, we believe that there's room for diversity and
multiple list formats when it comes to discussing our topic -- and our reason
for existence here need never be one in competition with, or to the exclusion of
any the other very fine Lost in Space discussion lists out there.

You've always welcomed my opinions and participation over on your list, so as
far as I'm concern, you'll always be welcome here. Thanks for the kind words.

Like a shiny wrapper on a new Christmas present, the home page for the new
Jupiter2LostinSpace mailing list exists to entice wonderment and discussion.
What is contained in this treasured gift? When people are this nice, each
message will certainly be cherished for its Lost in Space goodness.

Why am I here? To help participate in the growth of a new list, get some
fresh LiS perspectives, and meet some new friends in the process!

I tip my space-helmet to the Owner and Moderators of this fine new list, and
extend a warm greeting from the folks at the LostinSpace list. May our
journeys always be in the same direction, and when our paths cross may we
always make the time to share a helping hand with each other.

Hello to all of my fellow Jupiter-2'ers -

Guess what ? The Lost in Space Duchess (as opposed to Princess - but
I'm not going to discuss that episode right now) from Australia is
back too ! Well, you didn't think that I'd miss becoming a part of
this incredible, "rip-roaring" (take that as you like) LIS group
again, did you ? In fact I was getting withdrawals from not getting
any posts from the J2 list anymore !

Thank you my illustrious moderators for letting me get straight in
our list door again !

Also, yes Terry ! I too have had problems with the landing gear
legs collapsing on my Trendmasters Jupiter 2 playset - usually at a
crucial stage such as when landing it or when the Cyclops is chasing
the crew and they have to hop back in to the ship - it's just at
that point that the side of the ship gets buried in the dirt and lift-
off becomes impossible ! (Alright, so I know I have a fertile
imagination...).

The list's homepage was a group effort -- I did the grunt work under the
direction and supervision of my slave-driving advisors... I mean, my wise
and wonderful co-moderators Russell and Effra.

We shall. We also seem to be off to a good start. Last time I checked we
were up to 10 members (not too bad since were only about launch plus a
couple hours...)

Indeed, I would call you these, but I'm not sure if that's a good or bad
thing...

I see that our trivia expert Jimbo has returned -- Jimbo, were the above
aliterations ever used by Dr. Smith????

Hey, Mr. Drun, I really like some of those colorful adjectives used in
the descriptive "house rules" found on the "Jupiter2LostInSpace List"

Who very brilliant idea, were those? Huh? 8-P

Thank you, Don, Effra and Russell, for having me back onboard, this
wacky flying machine!!! :-)

Now, let's get this "ship shit", underway!
Shall we?

Okay, okay! I read the blurb about the list on the Yahoo group page

I wonder which one I will play with tonight?

Later, all,

May God Bless, John Chambers, Always!!!

Mr. Spock's Oscar-winning makeup guru dies September 1, 2001 Posted:
5:39 AM EDT (0939 GMT)

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Oscar-winning makeup pioneer John
Chambers, who did everything from put the pointy ears on "Star Trek's"
Mr. Spock to turn actors into simians for the original "Planet of the
Apes," has died of diabetes complications. He was 78.

Chambers died Aug. 25 at the Motion Picture and Television Fund
retirement home in Woodland Hills.

During his 30-year career, Chambers worked on numerous movies and
television shows, including TV's "The Outer Limits," "The Munsters,"
"Lost in Space" and "Mission Impossible." His film credits included "The
List of Adrian Messenger" and "The Island of Dr. Moreau."

Most of the time he worked out of a lab in his Burbank garage, and it
wasn't unusual for his neighbors to see stars like Leonard Nimoy, Lana
Turner, Marlon Brando and Mickey Rooney drop in for special makeup
sessions.

When he worked on "Planet of the Apes" in the 1960s, Chambers recalled
in a recent interview how he spent hours at the Los Angeles Zoo doing
research.

"It was the best way I could think of for capturing the elastic facial
expressions of the apes," he said.

His preparation led him to develop a new type of foam rubber that was
easier to work with than the material commonly used at the time. He also
created facial appliances that could be attached to actors' faces to
form primate features.

For his efforts he became only the second makeup artist to receive an
honorary Academy Award. A competitive category for makeup was
established in the 1980s.

Chambers also developed a new technique for making "bald caps" for
actors. His invention, made from liquid plastic sprayed onto a metal
form of an actor's head, remains the industry standard.

He is survived by his wife, Joan.

It gives me a certain amount of pleasure to point out with pride to the
fact, that the "B9 Robot Builder's Club" and "B9Talk List", are the
original, world's foremost leading authoritative information
headquarters in LIS fandom, for not only the armchair Lost in Space
Robot B-9 enthusiasts, but the serious, authentic replica B-9 builder
and collector, as well.

Since their inception, the "B9 Robot Builder's Club" and "B9Talk List",
has been providing countless LIS fans the world over, with professional,
straight-from-the-shoulder facts, most coming from the experts in the
field, surrounding that immortal bubble-headed booby, the B-9 Robot.

Should any of you LIS fans out there, ever have that sudden,
uncontrollable itch, to want to know how "You Can Build... The Lost In
Space Robot" and wish to seek a wealth of information in the form of
professional guidance, expert advice, counsel, how-to tips and purchase
genuine, certified, highest-quality produced parts of that of the
original Hero. Or, if you just have that desire to take a "Trip Through
The Robot". I do not know of anyone more qualified, to provide honest,
sincere and dedicated service to you, that you can always trust and
depend on, than the folks who are found at the "B9 Robot Builder's
Club".

No bunk, no junk, or shady deals, here. Just a couple of genuine, el
supremo B-9 Robot information centers, with Dewey F. Howard, as Club
President and professional Robot B-9 builder extraordinaire, Scott
Sanderson's experience, along with a whole bunch of other mighty
friendly LIS fans to boot, who meet and share a common interest at.

No doubt, what this B-9 Robot Builder's Club does, others will try to
do, too. But, not quite so well. There are many imitation B-9 Clubs and
discussion lists out there, now. Or, no doubt will be formed soon...But,
you know what?...I for one, accept no substitutes!!!
Unless you are living in a fools paradise, why look elsewhere and settle
for second best copies, when the actual, high-grade raw material of all
that glitters, can always be found in the original glory holes?
Nuff said.

I received the following personal invitation message from Dewey F.
Howard, yesterday. And, with his very kind permission, it gives me great
honor and privilege to be able to post it verbatim to all of the most
prominent LIS Discussion List's out there, for your awareness.

Thank you, Dewey!!!
...And, a standing applause, pal, for your never unnoticed, labor of
love!!! :-)

Kindest Regards and
Sincere Best Wishes,
To All LIS Fans,

~ Alan ~
