Jerry Reed Brought Country Music to a Wider Audience
His Death at Age 71 Is Another Major Loss for Country Music
Jerry Reed starred with Burt Reynolds in several blockbuster movies, recorded three No. 1 country singles, wrote one of Elvis Presley's biggest hits and developed a fingerstyle guitar technique that other musicians are still analyzing to this day. When he died Monday (Sept. 1) at age 71, the entertainment world lost a genuine original who helped take country music and the country lifestyle to a larger mainstream audience.
Born Jerry Reed Hubbard on March 20, 1937, in Atlanta, he began playing guitar at age 9 and was just a teenager when he began performing in the Atlanta area on shows featuring Ernest Tubb, Faron Young and others. At age 17, Capitol Records producer Ken Nelson saw him perform and signed him to a recording contract. Although his early records were not successful, he also became a staff songwriter for Atlanta music publisher Bill Lowery. Reed's "Crazy Legs" was recorded by rock pioneer Gene Vincent in 1958. Brenda Lee scored a Top 10 pop hit with Reed's "That's All You Gotta Do."
Following a two-year stint in the military, Reed moved to Nashville in 1962 and began work as a session musician while writing songs such as Porter Wagoner's "Misery Loves Company," a No. 1 single in 1962. In 1964, he joined RCA Nashville's artist roster at the urging of label executive Chet Atkins, one of Reed's biggest supporters.
In 1967, Reed landed his first single on Billboard's country chart. Although the track, "Guitar Man," peaked at a dismal No. 53, the song got the attention of Presley, who recorded the song and wanted Reed to recreate the funky guitar riff he used on his original version.
In a 2005 interview with CMT.com, Reed said he didn't recall being nervous when he showed up for Presley's "Guitar Man" session in Nashville.
"I'd have been nervous if I had to do something I didn't know how to do," Reed said. "Elvis had heard my album cut, and he wanted it to sound like that. His producer was an old friend of mine from Atlanta, Felton Jarvis, who said, 'Well, you're gonna have to get Reed in here to play on it then. He's a fingerpicker, and these guys don't have any idea what he's doing because he does all this weird stuff anyway. He tunes them strings weird.' So I got in there and I turned that E-string down and that B-string up and hit that intro. I wasn't worried about playing that."
At the same session, steel guitarist Pete Drake urged him to pitch another song to Presley.
"Pete and I knew each other in Atlanta, when I was working at a cotton mill and he was driving a Merita bread truck," Reed noted. "He said, 'Have you got anything else?' I said, 'No, man. Listen, this is enough for me, believe me.' Then Elvis said, 'Yeah, have you got any other songs?' I said, 'Well ... uh ... yeah.'"
When Reed mentioned the title, "U.S. Male," Presley said, "Let me hear it."
"So I cut down on 'U.S. Male,' and he said, 'Let's cut that thing,'" Reed recalls. "It was that easy. Absolutely that easy."
Reed's recording career began to pick up in 1967 and 1968 with the singles, "Tupelo Mississippi Flash" (inspired by Presley) and "Remembering." His popularity increased substantially in 1970 with "Amos Moses," a crossover hit that reached No. 8 on Billboard's pop singles chart. The same year, he gained national TV exposure when he became a regular on the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour. He eventually scored three No. 1 singles on the country chart -- "When You're Hot, You're Hot" (1971), "Lord, Mr. Ford" (1973) and "She Got the Goldmine (I Got the Shaft)" (1982).
During the '70s, Reed co-starred in a series of movies with Reynolds -- WW and the Dixie Dancekings (1975), Gator (1976) and Smokey and the Bandit (1977), the latter which produced a No. 2 single with the theme, "East Bound and Down." He reprised his role as Cledus "Snowman" Snow to work with Reynolds in other Smokey and the Bandit films that were released in 1980 and 1983. His additional acting credits include High Ballin' (with Peter Fonda) and Hot Stuff (with Dom DeLuise). More recently, he starred as Red Beaulieu, a sadistic college football coach, in the Adam Sandler hit, The Waterboy.
Reed's success as a recording artist and film star overshadowed his contributions as a songwriter and musician. He wrote more than 300 songs, including "A Thing Called Love," a No. 2 hit for Johnny Cash. As a session guitarist, he recorded with Waylon Jennings, Bobby Bare, Ian & Sylvia, Joan Baez and Ringo Starr, among others. He also recorded two albums of guitar duets with Chet Atkins. The first one, Me and Jerry, resulted in a Grammy in 1970 for best country instrumental performance. They won another Grammy together in 1992 in the same category for "Sneakin' Around." Reed also won a Grammy in 1971 for best male country vocal performance for "When You're Hot, You're Hot," one of several hits that begin with one of his guitar riffs.
During the CMT.com interview, Reed discussed how he arrived at his guitar style that is probably best described in the title of his instrumental, "The Claw." The technique began evolving when he was playing at dances in Atlanta.
"Every show, Ray would do Ray Charles' 'Hallelujah, I Love Her So,'" he said. " I loved the piano intro on that. It had the counterpoint -- the bass line going up and had the melody on top. I said, 'Man, I want to do that.' And that's what got me started was all that counterpoint stuff that I did. ... I loved R&B and rock 'n' roll and country and gospel. And in Atlanta, when you played dances, you had to play it all. It just evolved into the way I played my guitar."
Reed's last major label project was Old Dogs, a collection of Shel Silverstein songs performed with Jennings, Bare and Mel Tillis, which Atlantic Records released in 1998. At the time he released a concert album in 2005, he said he was writing a series of instrumentals he hoped to have recorded by other guitarists.
Considering his accomplishments in film and music, Reed said he had a one-word job description.
"Entertainer," he said. "I think that covers me pretty well."

Well, this email, is not a very pleasant one, The emails are below.
Very early this morning, my best friend Ghislain Turbide's MOM past away last night from CANCER, she had been battling this sickness for a year and a half.
Here is the email I received when I awoke this morning.
This email, I have talked to Ghislain, and he is taking it very hard, but his mom's suffering is no longer.
She is now flying with the Angels above us.
I will pray from him, his dad, and his family.
Ghislain attending Hair Dare in 2006, he had a 1987 T top Camaro ( white ), last year he was with his mom up north, as he is fromChapleau, Ontario Canada ( 9.0 hours 29 minutes- 540.64 miles)
To send Ghislain a personal email, please send it to : G Turbide xtremesfx@... ,
Thanks so much for everyone's support, and we will hope to see everyone in 2 weeks.
It saddens me to say mom has passed away this saturday morning around 3am. Her suffering has finally ended. She was in a lot of pain and many times said she could no longer handle the pain, and hated that she had to go tru all of this and hated to see us suffering too over her pain. All the nurses loved her as well, saying she was a very good woman, even through her pain, she kept saying thank you and treating every one like she always did, with love and respect and she got that from all who met her and loved her. Mom Rest In Peace
Yes sure. thanks for being there. as hard as it was to see her go, it was seeing her sufffering and in agony that was the worst. We all felt so helpless as we could see her in so much pain but yet we could not do anything about it, but watch and be with her and try to make her comfortable. Since we came down, she was with family 24 hours a day. We left her last night at 11 pm, all exhausted and knew she might go at anytime or day, from what the nurses said. Again Thank you
You might have already told me you were coming, I just want to confirm.

I just got off the phone with Don Pedro Colley, aka Sheriff Little, we chatted for over 2 hours and did I learn alot.
Don mentioned Crater Lake, and on the internet it states - Like No Place Else on Earth.
Do you know where Crater Lake Oregon is ?
And did you know it is 8600 feet about sea level.
Crater Lake is only 40 minutes away..from Sheriff Little's home....wow, how cool....
Don Lives at 4500 feet above sea level,
Crater Lake has inspired people for hundreds of years. No place else on earth combines a deep, pure lake, so blue in color; sheer surrounding cliffs, almost two thousand feet high; two picturesque islands; and a violent volcanic past. It is a place of immeasurable beauty, and an outstanding outdoor laboratory and classroom.
Crater Lake is located in Southern Oregon on the crest of the Cascade Mountain range, 100 miles (160 km) east of the Pacific Ocean. It lies inside a caldera, or volcanic basin, created when the 12,000 foot (3,660 meter) high Mount Mazama collapsed 7,700 years ago following a large eruption.
Generous amounts of winter snow, averaging 533 inches (1,354 cm) per year, supply the lake with water. There are no inlets or outlets to the lake. Crater Lake, at 1,943 feet (592 meters) deep, is the seventh deepest lake in the world and the deepest in the United States. Evaporation and seepage prevent the lake from becoming any deeper.
The lake is 5 by 6 miles (8 by 9.6 km) across with an average depth of 1,148 feet (350 m). Its deepest point has been measured at 1,949 feet (594 m) deep,[7] though as with any lake its depth fluctuates with the climate, particularly rainfall.[8] This makes Crater Lake the deepest lake in the United States, the second deepest lake in North America (Great Slave Lake is the deepest) and the ninth deepest lake in the world (Lake Baikal is the deepest). Crater Lake is often cited as the 7th deepest lake in the world, but this result excludes the recent discovery of subglacial Lake Vostok, which is situated under nearly 13,000 feet (4000 m) of Antarctic ice, and the recent soundings of O'Higgins/San Martín Lake, which is located on the border of Chile and Argentina.
However, on the basis of comparing average depths among the world's deepest lakes, Crater Lake becomes the deepest lake in the Western Hemisphere and the third deepest in the world.[9] Comparing average depths among the world's lakes whose basins are entirely above sea level, Crater Lake is the deepest.[10]
The caldera rim of Crater Lake ranges in elevation from 7,000 to 8,000 feet (2,130 to 2,440 m).
Getting to the Park
Plane The closest airports are located in Klamath Falls (60 miles from the park) and Medford (80 miles from the park).

Subject: Joseph "Lucky" Lambing - Funeral Arrangements
Hi all,
It's with the heaviest of hearts that I pass on to you the passing of my Dad, Joseph "Lucky" Lambing.
He battled non-hodgkins lymphoma for 10 years(he was told 8 years), and was on protocol drugs(experimental) which are now approved for other people. One of the possible side effects of the drugs was leukemia. He was diagnosed with pre-leukemia in January 2007, and my world came crashing down. They told him he had six months to a year. That gave me all the more reason to keep training for the Nashville Marathon while raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I raised $8269.
The end of January 2008, he was told the drug, Dacogen, that he was on for the Leukemia was not working, so they would try a "sister" drug, viadaza. This year, I tried to campaign for Man of the Year and raised about $3300 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, compared the man that won, $213,000. I was blown away but so happy at the same time because all of that money goes towards finding a cure for these horrible blood cancers.

Thanks to all who have supported our family in this time of grief. I am sorry if I haven't gotten back to you or this is the first time you are hearing of this. This year Paul Harrington of Ruscom Station, ( Ontario, Canada ) his wife Cheryl, and son Lance Brown, along with family members and some very close friends, have united to put together one of the best events in Southern Ontario, maybe even one of the best events in Canada.
It's the Hair Dare Dukes Weekend, a Car Show, Swap Meet and Cut-A-Thon Cancer Benefit, scheduled for Saturday, August 23 and Sunday, August 24 at the Leamington Fairgrounds, with a special dinner event on Friday, August 22 between 3:00 PM TO ??. This year is the sixth year for the Hair Dare event, which celebrates the classic TV show "The Dukes of Hazzard" as its theme.
"The reason I keep this event going is it is the only way that I know I can help make a little bit of a difference," Harrington says. "We can share our feelings with others about this SICKNESS, because at least 90 percent of the population out there knows someone that has died from CANCER."
Though he began the event in 2003 in honour of his mother, a cancer survivor, this year is even more meaningful for Harrington. "In February of this year, we lost another great man, my boss of almost 11 years and close family friend Steve Stowe, to this dreadful disease we call "CANCER". What hurts me the most, Steve was the only reason I became a licensed automotive technician, and during his short stay in the hospital we talked about a lot of things. I mentioned to Steve what we were planning this year as a charity, and he said "THAT'S GREAT, PAUL". I will remember those words for as long as I live."
A special memorial will be held for Steve Stowe on the Sunday of the event, at 2 p.m. at the fairgrounds.
The past five years of the Hair Dare event have raised more than $28,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.
For this year's event, Harrington and his sister, Debra-Ann Taylor of Tilbury, contacted St. Clair College to start a Scholarship Fund for a Student Surviving Cancer. The scholarship will be put into place with the help of Susan Maxwell, executive director of the St. Clair College Foundation, Windsor, and Lynn McGeachy Schultz, director of advancement at Thames Campus, Chatham.
"I think this was a great choice that we made," Harrington says. "At least we can see where the money is going, and it will be helping a local student that is SURVIVING CANCER."
Part of the way the event raises money is through pledges for "Hair Dares" -- when participants vow to daringly Cut or Shave their hair for the cause. Haircuts on Saturday will be provided by Estelle's Affordable Hair Cuts from Chatham, and on Sunday hair cuts will be provided by Mastercuts of the Devonshire Mall. "Thanks so much for their time; it is greatly appreciated," Harrington says.
The Saturday morning of the event starts with a "PARADE OF ALL CARS." Participants should meet at the Comfort Inn in Leamington at 8 a.m. The parade route is from the Comfort Inn to the Leamington Fairgrounds. "Special thanks to the Leamington Police for their help this year," Harrington says.
There will be several special guests at this year's event. Don Pedro Colley, who portrayed Sheriff Ed Little on "The Dukes," will sign autographs and chat with fans. He'll be joined by Byron Cherry, who played Coy Duke in the series.
Felix Silla, a prolific classic TV actor who portrayed the Alien Visitor in the "Dukes" episode "Strange Visitor to Hazzard," will appear for the first time at the event. Silla also played Cousin Itt on "The Addams Family," and was Twiki on "Buck Rodgers in the 25th Century." He also portrayed an Ewok on "Star Wars," and appeared in "The Planet of the Apes" and "Batman Returns."
All the actors will be signing photos and other items all weekend long, and there will be a lot of photo opportunities for the fans, Harrington says.
Also appearing at the event will be Billie Rae Bates of Atlanta, Georgia, author of the "Them Dukes! Them Dukes!" reference guide. Will Rodgers, aka "THE VOICE MAN," of Chattanooga, Tennessee, will be returning to warm the crowds again.
"Will's voice impersonations are just overwhelming, from all of the 'Dukes' casts members to the 'All in the Family' theme song," Harrington says. "Wow, he's just incredible."
Billy Stephenson will be making his way on stage, all the way from Georgia also, just a few hours from where the 'Dukes' started out.
"We have a few extras who were in the 'Dukes of Hazzard' 2005 movie that will be here as well," Harrington says, including himself. He's been a lifelong "Dukes" fan and not only owns his own General Lee, a 1969 Dodge Charger painted orange, but also Hazzard County Sheriff's cars from both the series and the 2005 movie. Currently He is building a Monster 4x4 General Lee, and a Cooter Tow Truck. He's collected "Dukes" memorabilia -- including genuine props from the filming of the series, and the 2005 Dukes Movie for many years.
Other events planned for the Hair Dare Dukes Weekend include the Smack A Wreck, a Daisy Duke look-alike contest, and the dunk tank will keep everyone busy, even a Silent Auction. The Memphis Kings, a band from Essex County, will be on stage Saturday, and Country Singer "Traci Kennedy" from St. Thomas will be appearing on Sunday. There will be plenty to see and do for the 2 full days of family fun and entertainment.
"A special thanks goes out to all the local newspapers that help us put this out in print so the public can read about this event," Harrington says.
Admission to Saturday and Sunday of the event is only $3 per person. The Leamington Fairgrounds are located at 194 Erie Street North in Leamington. Tickets for Friday night's Dinner With the Stars, at $25 each, are now available: call 519-975-0056 to reserve yours.
Harrington would also like to thank all of the event sponsors, because without their support this event would not take place,

This is something, considering the real of 'popular'??
entertainer problems these days,,, makes you go hmmmm
This seemed rather interesting to me.
I am amazed so many people reject such a freedom and belief.
.
DID YOU KNOW THESE FACTS?
I SURE DIDN'T TILL NOW
Death is certain but the Bible speaks about untimely death!
Make a personal reflection about this.....
Very interesting, read until the end.....
It is written in the Bible (Galatians 6:7):
'Be not deceived; God is not mocked:
for whatsoever a man sow,
that shall he also reap.
Here are some men and women
who mocked God :
John Lennon (Singer):
Some years before, during his interview with an American Magazine, he said:
'Christianity will end, it will disappear.
I do not have to argue about
that. I am certain.
Jesus was ok, but his subjects were too simple, today we are more famous than Him' (1966).
Lennon, after saying that the Beatles were more famous than Jesus Christ, was shot six times.
Tancredo Neves (President of Brazil ):
During the Presidential campaign, he said if he got 500,000 votes from his party, not even God would remove him from Presidency.
Sure he got the votes, but he got sick a day before being made President, then he died.
Cazuza (Bi-sexual Brazilian composer, singer and poet):
During A show in Canecio ( Rio de Janeiro ),
while smoking his cigarette, he puffed out some smoke into the air and said:'God, that's for you.'
He died at the age of 32 of LUNG CANCER in a horrible manner.
The man who built the Titanic
After the construction of Titanic, a reporter asked him how safe the Titanic would be.
With an ironic tone he said:
'Not even God can sink it'
The result:I think you all know what happened to the Titanic
Marilyn Monroe (Actress)
She was visited by Billy Graham during a presentation of a show.
He said the Spirit of God had sent him to preach to her.
After hearing what the Preacher had to say, she said:
'I don't need your Jesus'.
A week later, she was found dead in her apartment
Bon Scott (Singer)
The ex-vocalist of the AC/DC. On one of his 1979 songs he sang:
'Don't stop me; I'm going down all the way, down the highway to hell'.
On the 19th of February 1980, Bon Scott was found dead, he had been choked by his own vomit.
Campinas (IN 2005)
In Campinas , Brazil a group of friends, drunk, went to pick up a friend.....
The mother accompanied her to the car and was so worried about the drunkenness of her friends and she said to the daughter holding her hand, who was already seated in the car:
'My Daughter, Go With God And May He Protect You.'
She responded: 'Only If He (God) Travels In The Trunk, Cause Inside Here.....It's Already Full '
Hours later, news came by that they had been involved in a fatal accident, everyone had died,
the car could not be recognized what type of car it had been, but surprisingly, the trunk was intact.
The police said there was no way the trunk could have remained intact. To their surprise, inside the trunk was a crate of eggs, none was broken
Christine Hewitt (Jamaican Journalist and entertainer) said the Bible (Word of God) was the worst book ever written.
In June 2006 she was found burnt beyond recognition in her motor vehicle.
Many more important people have forgotten that there is no other name that was given so much authority as the name of Jesus.
Many have died, but only Jesus died and rose again, and he is still alive.
'Jesus'
PS: If it was a joke, you would have sent it to everyone. So are you going to have courage to send this?.
I have done my part, Jesus said
'If you are embarrassed about me,
I will also be embarrassed about you before my father.'
You are my 8 in 8 seconds. I am not breaking this. No way!
I'M TOLD THIS WORKS!!!!! Bishop T.D. Jakes '8 Second Prayer.' Just repeat this prayer and see how God moves!!
'Lord, I love you and I need you, come into my heart, and bless me, my family, my home, and my friends, in Jesus' name. Amen.'
Pass this message to 8 people {EXCEPT YOU AND ME}.You will receive a miracle tomorrow. I Hope that you don't ignore and let God bless you.

Mullins makes several of the sauces and dressings you enjoy. Ever visit a McDonald's and crack into one of those pouches of sweet and sour sauce to dip your nuggets? That's from Mullins. Ever open a pack of barbecue sauce at Arby's? Mullins gain. Even Newman's salad dressings are made at Mullins, and from what I hear, Paul Newman is one picky, handsome customer. The facility is mammoth. We toured about 280,000 square feet of it! I'll be talking more than once about my Mullins tour. I learned so much. But there's one very interesting related topic that came up that I wanted to share today. It's about food poisoning.
The guy who gave us our tour is named Ed. He's one of the brothers. Ed is a chemistry expert and is involved in developing most of the sauce formula. He's even developed sauce formula for McDonald's products that McDonald's has then awarded to other companies to manufacture. That's okay. It's all part of the process.
Anyway, keep in mind that Ed is a food chemistry whiz. During the tour, someone asked if we really needed to worry about mayonnaise. People are always worried that mayonnaise will spoil. Ed's answer will surprise you. Ed said that all commercially-made mayo is completely safe. It doesn't even have to be refrigerated. No harm in refrigerating it, but it's not really necessary. He explained that the pH in mayonnaise is set at a point that bacteria could not survive in that environment. He then talked about the quintessential picnic with the bowl of potato salad sitting on the table and how everyone blames the mayonnaise when someone gets sick. Ed says that when food poisoning is reported, the first thing the officials look for is when the "victim" last ate onions and where those onions came from. Ed says it's not the mayonnaise (as long as it's not homemade mayo) that spoils in the outdoors. It's probably the onions, and if not the onions, it's the potatoes. He explained, onions are a huge magnet for bacteria; especially uncooked onions. Ed says you should never plan to keep a portion of a sliced onion. He says it's not even safe if you put it in a zip lock bag and put it in your refrigerator. It's already contaminated enough just by being cut open and out for a bit that it can be a danger to you. (And doubly watch out for onions at the baseball park!)
Ed says if you take the leftover onion and cook it like crazy you'll probably be okay, but if you slice that leftover onion and put in on your sandwich, you're asking for trouble. Both the onions and the moist potato in a potato salad will attract and grow bacteria faster than any commercial mayonnaise will even begin to break down.
So, how's that for news? Take it for what you will. I, going forward, am going to be very careful about my onions. For some reason I see a lot of credibility coming from a chemist and a company that produces millions of pounds of mayonnaise every year.
