Since this radio looks remarkably like the Icom ID800H, I asked the Icom rep at Ham-Com about it and was told that Icom indeed makes it for Kenwood. It is only available in Japan at present and it is unknown if Kenwood will bring it to the US.
Tad, FYI, Kenwood had to cancel their Ham-Com appearance due to a death in the rep's family and not having anyone else available to sub for him.

Dean, I saw a picture on a web site of a Kenwood mobile that had the D-Star markings on it at least a year ago. When I asked Kenwood about it they said that the radio did not exist, and someone else told me the photo was a fake. It is not unusual for manufacturers to deny the existence of a new radio until they are just about ready to formally announce it. Kenwood was expected at HamCom this weekend and I was going to ask them again, but I heard they had to cancel at the last minute due to a scheduling problem.

Has anyone heard or know of any info on kenwood getting into the D-
STAR Radios. I have a ham nearby mentioned it to me that he heard or
seen something about it and I was curious. It would be nice for
kenwwood and even yeasu to get into it and give a more variety of
radios. Maybe then we can get more users and more interest. Any info
would be greatly appreciated.

I just attended HamCom near Dallas and got a chance to use the Digital
Voice functions of the ID-800H. It was really cool! N5MIJ and N5ZPR
did a great job presenting D-Star capabilities for digital voice and
high/low speed digital data, and AE5PL helped me with what is involved
in order to pass information to/from APRS and a D-Star radio in the low
speed digital mode. These guys are already doing this in the Dllas
area and I know it is being done in several other areas as well. I
hope to get something like it going in the Austin area soon.
I have added a couple of links at the web site, one for KC5ZRQ's nice D-
Star info page and one for AE5PL's APRS-IS and D-PRS site.

I have found 2 D-Star users in the Icom forum that are in the Atlanta area and
was wondering
if there were any additional Atlanta D-Star owners in this group?
thanks and 73,
Richard
I emailed ICOM about the very same issue and they said it was because
they are in the middle of redesigning the website and don't want to
add it to a site that will be gone soon. It will be on the new site
however.

Hi Dean,
I saw your mod somewhere yesterday while I was googling around on the
ID-800, and it looked easy to do.

Tad,
I am sure there were some cheaper prices I would think at
dayton but I didnt get to go this year so I hope they are good
prices to get more people to buy and get into the new mode. Are you
aware of the TX expansion mod that I found for this radio the ID-
800H. It expands vhf-uhf and you lose no functions either. I was the
one that discovered it. It is very easy to do. I have sent it to a
couple of mods sites but only one mods site has it up. If you are
interested I can give you the info. Be waiting to hear back.

Hello,
I'm new to the group and located near Austin, TX. I'm about to order an
ID-800 and wanted to verify which accessories I need to program the radio
memories with my PC? I think I need the CS-D800 software and the OPC-478U

The radio will be installed as a dash mount unit, so I don't need separation
cables, etc. I've seen a D-Star demonstration by N5MIJ, and am looking
forward to getting in on the fun! Hopefully there will be some other users
soon in the Austin area.

Well is there a link to it so we can have a look at one?
I'm interested to see what features and specs the new repeaters have.

Has anyone tried the tx expansion mod on their ID-800H for 136-174
mhz. Since I had found the mod it works excellent and I have no
problems what so ever. No lossed functions and did not need a reset
after it was performed.Curious on everyone elses output if mod was
performed.
Thanks

The modification enables TX from 136 to 174MHZ and from 420 to
470MHZ and it performs well. I have no camera but it is as easy as
my mod described. They are little black resistors just to the left
of the screw holding board in place in radio in the lower right
corner with radio facing you bottom side up.

I called company and was told that they were trying to get the mod
info from japan and waited for a response but never got one so i did
some looking of my own in the radio and found the mod. I used my
experiance from past mods and from past layouts and designs i found in
the radio what was similar to those past mods. Now for the mod info.
Take off bottom cover and with the radio facing you to the far lower
right is a screw that holds pc board in radio housing. Just to the
left of this screw is a series of 3 positions for diodes. From left to
righ the 1st diode is empty and 2 & 3 have a resistor in place. Remove
the 2nd diode for UHF and the 3rd one for VHF. I did this mod and all
functions of radio are still in place with nothing missing. Hope you
enjoy the mod and the mod is done at your own risk. IF not comfortable
with the mod then dont do it. I used just a tip of a knife and broke
out those resistor.

Thanks for the reply, Dean. In that case, I believe other stations
would hear a one-sided conversation. My question was geared more
towards station-to-station calling over linked repeater systems over
great distances. I imagine if receiving a call one would have to
program in the calling station's callsign before replying otherwise
the transmission would not find its way back to the other station. (?)

I have for sale a new icomv82 as well as a 1650mah extra battery for
it as well as a speaker/mic too. Original box and the mars mod is
performed as well. I have the id-800H with the d-star in it and until
the d-star gets up and going and more popular I am going to use the
money from the handheld for more important things around the house.
The only thing you need with this handheld now is the UT-118 digital
board. Other than that you get a speaker mic and a high capacity
battery and the radio in original box with warranty as well as the mod
done for 136-174 mhz operation for $200 dollars. If interested email
me at KF9L@...
Thanks

If anyone comes up with it or can find out can you let me know. My
Email is KF9L@... and would really appreciate the finding of the
mod. I have a pretty good idea of the spot for the mod but am waiting
