Apologies to those of you who received multiple copies of the last
Gareth Thomas trip email... it seems Yahoo! got rather over-excited
and decided to xerox one post into many.
My apologies... and here's hoping it doesn't happen again.
Susie
A date of Saturday 18th August has been set for the Horizon theatre
outing to see Gareth Thomas in the new play 'Moving Objects' by Mark
D. Thompson, who directed him in 'Hamlet' and 'Twelfth Night' at
Musselborough. (Not to be confused with Mark J Thompson of MJTV -
creator of 'Soldiers of Love', etc.) Gareth plays Joseph Leibovitch,
an East European refugee from the Holocaust, now working as a
pawnbroker. The dates are 10/24 August at the Brunton Theatre,
Musselborough.
As we've very little time to organise this, anyone wanting to join us
should contact Pauline Tucker straight away on tuckers@...
There are already a group of 10/12 planning to go that day.
Susie
More info on those apparently confusing dates for JP's forthcoming
play... My thanks to Pene Hayward for explaining things for us!
There are in fact two theatres that comprise the West Yorkshire
Playhouse - the Quarry and the Courtyard.
The Courtyard, which is the smaller venue, will be where 'Dangerous
Corner' runs, starting around the 10th September for about 4 weeks.
The Quarry theatre will have a different play on at the same time
(also a Priestley and starring Patrick Stewart no less: 'Johnson over
Jordan') and it is that one that is on until September 29th. Booking
opens next week.
The box office number for the WYP is 01132 137700.
Susie
My thanks to Fiona Pymont for the following:
>>Did you know that Servalan is featured in this week's Observer
television guide?
If you turn over the front cover and look at the other side, there is
a full-length cut-out picture of her in her famous white funnel-neck
dress.
The photo is accompanied by the words: 'Servalan returns to Blake's
Seven, on UK Gold today' (ie Sunday, the day the Observer listings
begin for each week).
This proves that:
a) Readers are expected to remember the show from when it was first
broadcast.
b) Readers are expected to remember what it was basically about.
c) Readers are expected to have an idea of who Servalan is.
d) Blake's Seven is considered to be a cult TV show.
e) Even if you haven't seen the show and have no idea what it is
about, Servalan is incredibly chic and cool - so why not tune in to
find out more...
Also, did you know B7 style jackets are thought to be at the cutting
edge of elegance? According to last November's New Woman magazine,
fashion editors can't wait to get their hands on them - and recommend
them to women everywhere!<<
Seems that this didn't get through to everyone, so I'm trying again!

Our Supreme Commander has managed to organise a 'world premiere'
showing of a 40 minute excerpt from the feature film 'Possessions'
which stars Gareth Thomas. As Gareth is a guest at Nexus this
weekend (www.enterthenexus.com) she wondered if it would be possible
to show some or all of the film at the convention, and after a couple
of hours on the phone has managed to arrange a screening. Alas it
wasn't possible to show the film in its entirety (it's over 2 hours
long) but the nice folk at Nexus were delighted at the opportunity to
premiere a film starring one of their GOHs and have given it a main
hall slot at 9am on Sunday. Hopefully Gareth will read an
introduction to the film before the exerpt is shown.
Here's the spec. on the film and what will be shown at the
convention:
'Possessions' is a low budget feature written, directed and produced
by Mark J Thompson (who also produces the 'Soldiers Of Love' comedy
sci-fi audio CD series and the 'Actor Speaks' CDs, which feature
actors who have appeared in Blake's 7.)
'Possessions' was filmed in February 2001 and completed last month. It
is hoped there will be a video release soon. Amongst the cast are
Peter Miles and Debbie Watling (Doctor Who), Anna Karen (On the Buses
& EastEnders) and Peter Dean & Judith Jacob (EastEnders). The 40
minute excerpt is from the middle of the film and shows most of the
scenes featuring Gareth.
To help you get a basic grip - here is a quick rundown of the story:
Two unusual investigators, Madame Ouvre and Sister Conceptre are
helping the Police unravel the mystery of six murders committed in
the farmhouse of Fanny Gapp. The two have already viewed a television
docusoap which shows how Fanny has won fifty million pounds, and the
reactions of the six friends and acquaintances. Madame Ouvre and the
Sister then watch a second video tape which shows some terrifying
camcorder footage in which the six people are murdered one by one.
So who killed Lady Winkworth, who Fanny bought the farmhouse from?
Major Gapp, her ex-husband
Pru, her step-daughter,
Robin, Fanny's deranged friend,
Farmer Brownlow, Fanny's latest love
or Professor Fiboosgola, her feng shui expert.
And why?
As we join Madam Ouvre and Sister Conceptre, they've just witnessed
the last grisly murder captured on camcorder tape.....
... one more reason to come along to the Nexus convention this
weekend, 6/8 July folks...

A lot of B7 fans will be at the Nexus convention, 6/8 July at the
Jarvis International Hotel, Bristol (www.enterthenexus.com) as Gareth
Thomas is one of the GOHs. It's been suggested that a little side-
trip might be organised to visit the Nature Trail around Oldbury
Power Station, including some areas where the episode 'Killer' was
filmed. Oldbury Power Station (alias Saurian Major, Spaceworld
and 'Killer's Q-Base) is around 18 miles from the convention.
Obviously this trip would be dependent on the weather, and whether
enough people with cars were able to give lifts to those without, and
would need to fit around Gareth's activities over the weekend.
Around 4 hours should be allowed door to door. Possible times for
our Tour Guide (who knows which areas were actually used in the
filming) to take a group would be Saturday morning, Saturday
afternoon, Sunday morning.
Would anyone be interested in joining this outing (even if you're not
going to the convention)? Lorna Price, our guide, has offered to
meet anyone interested in the hotel bar at 6pm on Friday, to discuss
plans further, but it would be helpful to know in advance how many
people MIGHT be interested.
Please email Pauline at tuckers@... if you're interested,
so we can try to organise something.

local news for many years and helped put hundreds of Criminals behind
bars, paving the way for more in-depth shows such as "Crimewatch".
Shaw's involvement in the television business dates back to the
earliest days of Independent Television where he was a continuity
announcer at Lord Lew Grade's ATV. Something of a "Cult" personality
Shaw has played himself in programmes such as "Sean's Show", the
film "Adventures of A Private Eye" and a spoof documentary during the
30th Anniversary celebrations of "Doctor Who".
MATT ZIMMERMAN - Famously having obtained the role of Alan Tracy
in "Thunderbirds" because he looked like the marionette that had
already been sculpted, Matt made the role of the enthusiastic
youngest son in the International Rescue set up very memorable.
Further roles include appearances in "UFO", "Whoops Apocalypse" (the
TV series), "Mike and Angelo", "Jeeves and Wooster", "Crazy Like a
Fox", and as Shooty in "The Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy" mean
that Matt's face is now as memorable as his voice. Big screen
appearances include 1966's "A Man For All Seasons", "Birth of the
Beatles", "Haunted Honeymoon", "The Forgotten" and "Margaret's
Museum" with Helena Bonham-Carter.
DICK FIDDY - As a researcher and archivist, Dick was the creator and
writer of the three hour C4 television specials "The A to Z of TV"
and "1001 Nights of TV", and was the senior researcher/consultant and
writer on the 13 part series "TV Heaven. He has edited the television
magazine "Primetime" and published a number of books and exhibition
guides, including the "Virgin Television Year Book"; a guide to "The
Saint" television series, "So You're the Famous Simon Templar";
and "Television: An Introductory Guide to its History". He is
currently writing "Missing, Believed Wiped", a guide to programmes
missing from the British TV archives (publication expected September
2001). He has been a consultant programmer for the British Film
Institute's National Film Theatre collaborating on many seasons of
classic film and television, a role he still enjoys. As a script
writer, Dick Fiddy began his television work contributing sketches
for shows like "Not the Nine O'Clock News" and "Dave Allen" and was
one of the permanent four writers on the TVS/C4 sitcom "Little
Armadillos
PETER WRAGG - As part of the legendary Century 21 Visual Effects Team
working on the series of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, from "Stingray"
through to "UFO", under the supervision of Derek Meddings.
Progressing from there through to the BBC, he worked as Visual
Effects designer on many classic programmes including "Threads", "The
Flipside of Dominic Hide" and three Doctor Who stories "The
Visitation", "Resurrection of The Daleks" and " The Trial of A Time
Lord" parts five to eight. His most known work is probably the
effects work on "Red Dwarf", originating designs for the original
ship as well as many of the other craft seen during the shows long
run - including "Starbug". Since leaving the BBC, where he was head
of isual Effects he has contributed effects to Channel 5's "Headless"
and has many new projects on the boil.

+INFORMATION+
GARETH THOMAS
We now have a little more information on the play which has been
written for Gareth to perform at the Brunton Theatre, Musselborough
(nr Edinburgh) as part of this year's Edinburgh Festival. The play is
provisionally titled 'Moving Objects' and is written by Mark D
Thompson. Gareth plays an East European refugee now working as a
pawnbroker. The dates are 10/24 August. More info soon.
Also, more news on the drama documentary 'Shipman' about the serial
killer doctor Harold Shipman which Gareth recorded for Yorkshire TV.
This was to be shown in September, but further police investigations
into Shipman's case have put the broadcast date back. Gareth told us
that he'd actually been offered the part as he looked uncannily like
the real-life vicar who he portrays. He also got the part of the
father in Sky TV's 'Baddiel's Syndrome' as he reminded David Baddiel
of his own father.
PAUL DARROW
Don't forget Saturday 2nd June from 11am/2.30pm Paul is doing a
special Signing of Nothing-in-Particular at the Who Shop stand,
Princes Mead Shopping Centre, Farnborough, Hampshire. There's a crowd
of us going along - come and say hello.
JOSETTE SIMON
Was seen in the UK Gold screening of 'Silent Witness' on Tuesday
evening.
1978
Missed the Blake's 7 segment of 'I Love the 1970's - 1978' last
September on BBC 2? The series is being repeated, so watch out for
interviews with Gareth Thomas, Paul Darrow, Peter Tuddenham and an
outrageous Jacqueline Pearce on Saturday 14th July (or later, if they
don't show one episode every week till then - keep an eye out in the
papers) in the 1978 episode.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Unfortunately we've not been able to get the new-
updated Horizon website up and running quite as quickly as we'd
intended, so we've not been able to advertise the auction as widely
as we'd have liked. Therefore, to be fair to the donators of our
auction items, we've decided to extend the closing date of the
auction to Saturday 30th June - an extra 3 weeks. So you've got even
more time to save up your credits...

Several people have had problems viewing the group files and entering
our first Poll via the internet site as they are not registed with
Yahoo. You *must* have a Yahoo ID before you can view any of the
group files on the site. This includes the Bookmarks area, and
taking part in our Polls.
In order to access the group files online, you have to "sign up" with
Yahoo - and link your Yahoo id to your email address... Signing up
doesn't cost you anything, and although they do ask you a whole bunch
of questions, you can (if you so desire) make up huge great whopping
lies in response if you wish to protect your anonimity... Not that i
would advocate this of course. I was just mentioning it in passing...
:)
Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/
and then click on "New Users - Click Here to Register" on the left-
hand side of the screen. You will be asked to choose a Yahoo id and
a password, which you can link to your email address. Providing you
enter the same email address at this stage as the one you have used
for the B7 news group then the Yahoo! database should recognise you
and automatically link things up... although you may have to go
through the further stage of validating your email address before
this works - Yahoo will send you the instructions.
Apologies if this process seems like hassle. It *is* worth the
effort of getting it sorted... I promise!! And remember, you don't
*have* to do any of the above if you have no interest in
participating in the Poll, or viewing the Files and Links on the
group site.
I would however urge you to make the effort... because you never
know, Avon might not win the Poll if you all participate...
:)
Make that vote for Og count!! And good luck!!

And now some more information on the new Dalek Empire CD series from
Big Finish, which stars Gareth Thomas
as Kalendorf. Thanks to writer/director Nicholas Briggs for the
information.
DALEK EMPIRE NEWS RELEASE from Big Finish
On Sunday 6th May 2001, the first part of Dalek Empire was recorded
at The Moat Studios in south London.
The cast featured some returning voices from Big Finish's ever-
expanding repertory company of actors.
Sarah Mowat stars as planetary geologist Susan Mendes. Sarah played
the marathon role of the Sirens of Time in The Sirens of Time,
appearing as five different incarnations of the same being.
Nick Briggs: 'Sarah is a very special actress. I've been trying to
find a big role for her ever since Sirens. We did at one point
consider her to play Paul McGann's new assistant before the character
of Charley Pollard was devised.'
Sarah says: 'I've encountered the Daleks before, because my
godfather is Roger Hancock, whose company sort of 'protects' the
Daleks. I know Terry Nation didn't want to have the Mickey taken out
of them, and I think that's important because the Daleks can still be
terrifying. And they are in Dalek Empire.'
[Sarah describes the Doctors in The Sirens of Time: 'All three of the
Doctors were very different. Sylvester McCoy almost ad-libbed around
what was written, in a very mad way. He was a sort of mad Doctor,
which was fun. Colin Baker was jolly and cuddly. Peter Davison was
just gorgeous and really enthusiastic.']
Mark McDonnell plays Alby Brook, a slightly less than dynamic space
security agent. Mark featured in The Fearmonger and will also be
appearing in the next season of McGann plays. He's currently working
on the second season of his Radio 4 comedy series, Velvet Cabaret,
which promises to be the next big comedy cult when it migrates to a
BBC TV version entitled Velvet Soup this summer.
Nick Briggs: 'Mark was one of the 'crap commandos', as we called
them, in the upcoming Time of the Daleks. The moment I started
working with him in that, I knew I'd found my Dalek Empire leading
man.'
Mark says: 'When Nick first spoke to me about this, he hadn't
finished writing it. I said I'd like to do it. So now the
character's turned out a bit like me in space - always trying to find
out where the nearest bar is!'
Gareth Thomas guest stars as the enigmatic Kalendorf. Gareth is, of
course, best known as Blake from Blake's Seven, but it was his
performance in McGann's audio debut Storm Warning which led to his
casting in Dalek Empire.
Nick Briggs: 'Aside from being a brilliant actor, he's a thoroughly
nice bloke.'
Gareth says: 'It's an interesting character. He has a number of
special qualities and is a knight in the old fashioned sense of the
word, but in the first part he's acting rather against type but all
will no doubt be revealed as the story moves on.'
Other members of the cast include John Wadmore (another Sirens
veteran) as newsreader Gordon Pellan, Ian Brooker (regularly heard on
The Archers and many other Radio 4 productions) and Joyce Gibbs
(another Archers and Radio 4 regular who will also be familiar to
viewers of the BBC1 Soap Doctors in which she plays Violet Appleby).
Once again, Nick Briggs and Alistair Lock will supply their acclaimed
Dalek voices.
GENESIS OF DALEK EMPIRE
Producer Jason Haigh-Ellery explains the genesis of Dalek
Empire: 'It came about with a conversation between myself and Nick.
He was determined to get some Dalek stories done which would stand
alone. I wholeheartedly agreed with him. I thought it was a
brilliant idea.'
Writer/director Nick Briggs: 'It was before we had the licence to do
Doctor Who. At that stage, actually doing Doctor Who seemed like a
completely unobtainable goal. So my thoughts at that time were that
it might be easier just to get the rights to do the Daleks.'
Script editor John Ainsworth explains the premise of the 4-part
series. 'Dalek Empire is about presenting an old Doctor Who situation
in a new way. It's a Dalek invasion. And you could say that's all
it's about. But it goes further, exploring the real moral issues
that people face in terrible situations as well as the relationships
they have. And the horrible decisions they have to make for 'the
greater good', and what that does to you.'
Nick: ' The characters in the series are not in control of the
situation. They've been overrun. The Dalek invasion starts and the
Daleks are winning! But there's plenty of action in there! Plenty of
Daleks! Intrigue, excitement and Transolar discs!'
Part 1 Invasion of the Daleks is slated for release at the end of
June. Further parts will be released in August, October and
December, additional to Big Finish's Doctor Who releases. You'll be
able to order the CDs through the club shortly, with a special prize
draw for everyone who pre-orders a copy of the first CD.
For more information on Big Finish productions, check out their
website: http://www.doctorwho.co.uk/

already under way.

CREDIT CARD ORDERS: When sending your CC orders to Gillian, can you
address the letter just to Gillian Puddle, Horizon, Rowbarns Lodge,
etc. etc. and NOT say 'Credit Card Orders' on the envelope. I know we
told you to in the magazine, but we've decided it might be best to
just say HORIZON, when addressing orders rather than specifying, for
security reasons. Sorry about that!
DOUGLAS ADAMS I'm sure many of you were fans of 'The Hitchhikers
Guide to the Galaxy' and will be saddened to hear of the death of
writer Douglas Adams. He died of a heart attack at his home in
California aged just 49, leaving a wife Jane, and 6 year old daughter
Polly.
ECLECTIC21 CONVENTION - 25/27 May at the Holiday Inn, Leicester
Just a week to go before this convention starts. The line-up of GOHs
to tempt you are: Gareth Thomas & Jacqueline Pearce, Frank Maher
(Stuntman on B7, The Prisoner, Department S), Andrew Sewell (Producer
of the upcoming B7 Movie), Sylvia Anderson (Co-creator of Stingray,
Thunderbirds, UFO, Space 1999), Mike Billington (UFO), Ed Bishop
(UFO), Storm Constantine (Wraeththu), Steve Englehart (Marvel and DC
comics). All to be upstaged shamelessly by fandom's greatest Servalan
impersonator - David Walsh!
They boast they have 'something for everyone' and from their packed
programme they might well be right. Unlike other conventions that
often focus on a certain genre or series, their programme reflects a
daily thematic approach whilst incorporating many of the best works
of their invited guests. Apart from Two 24-hour video rooms, a
reading room, dealers rooms, convention bar, swimming pool & jacuzzi,
the main and alternate programmes are all detailed below, in info
taken from their latest Progress Report.
Friday is Sci Fi day and the two 24 hour video rooms will reflect
this by showing some of the best sci fi films and TV series they
consider to have hit our screens. Enjoy some of the greatest episodes
from the best of British sci fi, such as Blakes 7 and UFO, plus the
overseas influences of Babylon 5, Star Trek in all of its various
incarnations, Earth Final Conflict, and Farscape. The main hall in
the early afternoon will be showing some of the best SF films. Later
there's a pub quiz. And don't miss the opening ceremony - the
introduction to the guests has to be seen (and heard!) to be
believed. Prepare to be impressed!
For those of you who wish to take a more participatory role, enter
the world of the alternate programme where you can immerse yourself
in workshops, discussions and debates with like minded people, such
as "Has technology in the form of the web and DVD , for example, made
conventions redundant?" Or how about the effects of DC and Marvel
comics on the medium for all you comic buffs. There are many more.
And there's a sci fi disco from 9.00 p.m until 2.00.a.m.
Saturday's theme is Carnaby Street. There's a full video programme
(including Thunderbirds, Austin Powers, Barbarella and The Avengers)
to reflect the work of the guests as well as the best of cult TV and
films from the swinging sixties. Today will also be your chance to
listen, chat with and generally enjoy the company of the excellent
guests. Starting at 10.00 a.m, the main hall programme will be
dominated by a series of question and answer sessions with the
guests. There will be autographs and photo sessions too. With a theme
like Carnaby Street, no day would be complete without a disco
reflecting this fab period in our history. So come on guys, get out
those groovy paisley and polka dot shirts, hipster jeans and winkle
pickers. For the women, or for the men if they prefer - oh behave,
don the mini skirt and the go-go boots and get groovin to the great
sounds of the Beatles, the Who, the Stones, the Small Faces, and
many, many others. The evenings' entertainment will be provided by
the excellent DJ duo, Chris King and Kevin Pace, and so a splendid
time is guaranteed for all. Or spend some time with Gareth Thomas in
the alternate room who will be providing a series of his favourite
readings from the works of William Shakespeare. This will be followed
by a filk singing session.
Sunday's theme is 'Fear and Fetish'. The emphasis will be on the
diverse worlds of fetish, horror and the supernatural. Sunday's main
hall programme will again be dominated by the presence of the con
guests, but in contrast to the Saturday talks, Sunday's will adopt a
different approach. The video rooms stay in character with showings
of Forever Knight, Buffy and Brimstone.
For those of you who prefer a touch more interaction in your
conventions, there will be a full range of alternate panel programmes
in keeping with the theme for the day. So for example, if discussing
the dark world of vampirism arouses your blood or you want to learn
how to read the Tarot cards, understand the science of psychometry
and aromatherapy, then the alternate panel room will be the place for
you.
With a theme like 'Fear and Fetish', the day's proceedings would not
be complete without the opportunity, if any was needed, to don the
leather and PVC as well as those false fangs and black cloak and head
for the dance floor for a last boogie to round off what promises to
be a very enjoyable weekend. However, please keep it clean, after
all, it is a family event!!

together/meeting as quite a few of us will be there on the day. A
bit nearer the time we'll fix a time and place to meet, so anyone
wanting to come along and meet Paul can combine it with getting to
know some fellow fans. Let us know if you'd like to join us -

Susie
Our thanks to Fiona Pymont for the following:
"Glynis Barber is the cover girl for the June edition of 'Woman's
Journal'. (out now)
She also appears inside, as part of a feature in which several 'sex
symbols' are made up to look first elegant, then sexy.
She is described as being 'best known' for 'Dempsey & Makepeace' and
the Oil of Ulay/Olay ads. No mention of B7 whatever !!!!!!!!"

Susie
Several people have had problems viewing the group files via the
internet as they are not registed with Yahoo. You *must* have a
Yahoo ID before you can view anything group files on the site.
Good luck!!
Susie
Well, hopefully you're all still with me. The transfer to Yahoo!
hasn't exactly been as smooth as it could have been - and I apologise
now for any confusing combination of emails that you may have
received over the last few days in the process of getting here. I
would also like to apologise for the "spammy" blurb that appears at
the top of every message: I'm afraid that it is the price we have to
pay for using this service and I have no control over its content...
So - welcome all!! Fingers crossed any wrinkles will work themselves
out quickly. Our first bulletin via Yahoo! was issued yesterday
(20th) and if you missed it, can be viewed in the messages section of
the group:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Horizon_B7news/messages
Thank you for joining us, and look out for more Blake's 7 news very
soon...
With best wishes,
Susie
We promised you some extra special items in our next auction, and we
think you'll agree there are some irresistible items on offer.
Most of the items in our auction are extremely rare and this may be
your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to buy, so get your credits
ready...

line, which was presented to David Maloney at the B7 production

packaging!) Certificate of authentication will be provided by Judith
Smith (formerly production secretary). 100% of the sale price is
going to the charities. Reserve price £50.
2) Quicksale Item - A set of original BBC B7 publicity cards (b/w

concerned. Reserve price £25 current highest bid £85*
3) Quicksale Item - One of the original Blake's 7 sound track

very fortunate to have these items in our auction these are all
original designs (working drawings) for the early seasons of B7, and
all signed by June. (We have some pictures which will be put up on
the website shortly)
5) AVON Redemption/Killer. This is a mixed-media (pencil,
crayon) drawing 16½" x 11½", of Avon in the costume worn by
Paul Darrow in the episodes Redemption and Killer. Reserve price
£175.
6) AVON First Thought of black studs! This is the earliest
surviving idea for Avon's black studded costume. It measures
21Ό" x 14 Ύ", is in a mixture of crayon and watercolour with
silver, on grey Ingres paper, and is in astonishingly good condition
for a working drawing - no creases or blemishes (except where the
colour has been smudged). Reserve price £250.
7) AVON In Silver Shadow/Horizon/Gambit & Children of
Auron. A half-length study; pencil, body-colour and silver paint on
grey Ingres paper: 21½" x 14 Ύ"; There is a crease down the

watercolour on white stock paper: 16½ " x 11½" of

Pearce. The sheet is in excellent condition, with slight damage to

production process). It is a full length study; pencil and crayon on

THE AUCTION RULES:
- Closing dates: the auction will close on Saturday 9th June
2001.
- Three Quicksale Items items 2, 3 and 4 have been designated
Quicksale Items. The seller is only selling these items because of
financial circumstances, so because we have kept her waiting so long
while waiting for the magazine to be completed, we have agreed to
alter the bidding conditions on these items to help her. The closing
date for these 3 items will EITHER be 9th June (as in the main
auction) OR if/when the seller feels the top bid is high enough to
persuade her to take the money straight away. Therefore, if you want
to buy any of these items, you are advised to put in your highest
bids straight away otherwise you may lose out.
- Where will the items and bids be listed? The items will be listed
in H40, on the Horizon website and in Horizon's email bulletins.
If anyone out there with a website/B7 related info service would also
like to list the items, please contact Diane Gies. Once bidding
starts, the highest bids on each item will be listed on the website
(updated regularly) and in the Horizon email bulletins and paper
newsflashes. Diane will also provide current bid prices by telephone
on 020 8904 5588 but will NOT call anyone back (ie. don't leave a
message about bids on the answerphone) you have to keep trying
until you catch her. If you have access to the internet, please do
check the website or bulletins, or just email Diane for an update.
The website isn't quite ready to put the info up yet (hopefully in
the next few days)
- How to bid all bids must be received in writing, either by
post to Diane Gies at 18 Holt Road, North Wembley, Middlesex HA0 3PS,
UK OR via email to diane.gies@.... When bidding you must
provide your full name, full address and a valid email address OR
telephone number (or both!) and Horizon Membership Number (if you are
a Horizon member). Once you have registered a bid, any future bids on
any items need only have your name as we'll have stored your
contact information. Anyone writing in MUST ALSO include a self-
addressed stamped envelope with their first bid so we can contact you
if necessary. If you bid by email this isn't necessary as we can
reply by email.
- Reserve prices, charity items and bidding amounts. Each item
listed will have a reserve price - no bids will be accepted below
these prices. Charity? 10% of the proceeds from each item will be
going to the club's designated charities unless otherwise
specified. We will be accepting bids in £5 increments (ie. all
bids must be in multiples of 5).
- How to pay? If your bid is the highest at the end of the auction,
you will be contacted to arrange for payment. You will be able to pay
by cheque, postal order, international money order in sterling, or by
credit card. All items are in Horizon's possession. They will be
despatched to the winning bidders once full payment, including
delivery charges, has been received and cleared.
- Delivery it will be the responsibility of the buyer to pay
the necessary delivery costs. Costs will depend on the size/weight of
each item and its destination. All auction items sent by post will be
sent as an insured parcel or by registered post. Arrangements can be
made to collect the items from Horizon HQ to save delivery costs, or
possibly they can be brought along to a convention.
- Proxy/maximum bids a new feature of our auctions. If you do
not wish to keep checking to see if you have been outbid on an item,
and thus having to write/email in with a new bid, you can send in a
PROXY bid. This means that you should tell us the MAXIMUM amount you
are willing to pay. Horizon will then place new bids on your behalf
UP TO your maximum as appropriate which will enable you to win the
item at the lowest possible price. For example, let's say you are
willing to pay up to £80 for an item. If the current bid was
£25 on an item and you wanted to enter the bidding, you could
either
bid a straight £30 (or more, you can always bid more!) but if the
bidding then went to £40 you would have to enter a further bid in
writing to keep ahead with the bidding. However, if you give Horizon
a PROXY bid of £80, then we would AUTOMATICALLY increase your bid
to
£45 so that you were `in the lead' again. We would
continue to bid for
you in £5 increments if and when necessary until bidding reaches
the
amount you stated as your maximum. Of course if this happened you
would still be able to change your mind and increase your bid, or
decide on a new maximum.
What's the point of that then? It makes it easier for you in not
having to watch the bidding all the time (particularly if you're
100% sure you're not prepared to bid over your maximum proxy bid)
whilst ensuring you pay the lowest price possible if you ARE the
highest bidder. If you bid a proxy of £80 but your nearest
competitor only goes as high as £50, you won't have to pay
£80 but
only £55. This is because the proxies received will be kept
confidential - no one else bidding will be told what proxy bids have
been made, they will only know the current highest bid.
- Tied bids if two or more people bid the same amount, they
will be contacted and advised to see if they wish to increase their
bid. If no-one does, the person whose tied bid was received FIRST
will be the `winner'.
- Buying/Selling obligations bidding in the auction implies you
are intending to pay the amount you bid if you are the highest
bidder. Please do not bid if you do not intend to honour your
commitment. However, we accept that sometimes a person's personal
circumstances may change so we aren't going to send Federation
Troopers after you if you genuinely need to withdraw your bid. If a
winning bidder does fail to pay up within the time specified (within
2 weeks of notification of being the winning bidder) the chance to
buy the item will be offered to the NEXT highest bidder until someone
pays up! Similarly, we reserve the right to withdraw any of the items
from the auction if necessary.
- Can non-Horizon members bid for items? Yes the auction is
open to Blake's 7 fans everywhere. Please feel free to spread the
word to anyone you think may be interested in any of the items.
However, Horizon reserves the right to refuse to accept bids at the
discretion of the committee.
We hope that the instructions are clear, but please get in touch with
Diane Gies if you have any further queries. Good luck to you all.
Please note that the information will also be posted in the FILES
section of our Yahoo!Group:

SAD NEWS
From Diane Gies: "I am very sad to have to announce the death in New
Zealand of Kathy Hanson. She died of a stroke on 7th April, aged just
57. Kathy was best known for editing and producing the
acclaimed 'Down and Unsafe' and 'Seventh Sector' series of fanzines,
for which she wrote many of the stories and drew many of the
illustrations, including her achingly funny cartoons. She also ran
two excellent conventions (ConFederation) in New Zealand in the late
80's, with GOHs Paul and Janet Darrow, Michael Keating and Jacqueline
Pearce, which were thoroughly enjoyed by both fans and guests alike.
She wrote and illustrated for many other zines (including our own)
around the world and we are very glad that in the last few years I
persuaded Kathy to allow Horizon to reprint her fanzines so that a
new generation of fans could enjoy them. As well as being extremely
talented, with a wonderfully wicked sense of humour, Kathy was a
kind, generous and deeply loyal person. The world of Blake's 7 fandom
has lost someone very special, and I have lost a very dear friend. We
extend our condolences to her mother, and her sister Christine."
