I have the same question. I was on a show in the mid-60s.  There was an astronaut on the show, and I ate some beets that had been packaged for the astronauts.  I would love to see it.

Here in Denver, I was trying to explain to a co-worker what the Pennsauken Mart
was like. It was...different for sure. One could get a haircut, a '45' or a
kitten all for about 50 cents each...and probably obtain all within 15 feet of
each other.

A visual for my co-worker was found in the link below; it contains a few
nostalgic Philadelphia and suburban NJ pictures.

Wow -- thanks for the memories. Horn and Hardart -- it was SO exciting to go in there when we went to downtown Philly for the parade (Mummer's -- do they still have the Mummer's Parade on New Year's Day?) -- Dad would give me a dime (or, gasp! a quarter!) and I'd get to pick out whatever I wanted.

I'm glad the diving horse is gone though. That always made me really sad.

Yes we still have the Mummers Parade...not as long as it was years past...but still impressive...Horn and Hardart was also one of my favorite memories of going downtown and watching the parade...or just going shopping with parents...thanks for the great pictures

While I had never been to the Pennsauken Mart, I have been to several Farmer's Markets in Pennsylvania. My favorite was The Montgomery Farmers Market on Route 309. There was a bakery at the front door that specialized in home made cinnamon buns and three kinds of cheese cake. They made the buns all day until closing and I think they sold them all. They were so tasty! There are two other Farmer's Markets that are still operating, one is in Gilbertsville and the other is in Adamstown called The Green Dragon. Both are wonderful places with auctions and animals for sale as well as everything else that can be imagined.

I enjoyed visiting the link you posted. I remember Lit Brother's Christmas and Easter displays. They were all animated.  I remember riding on the Reading Railroad from Wissaheckon into the Reading Terminal. Oh, and the Reading Market is still in operation.

Some of you might also remember a place in Clifton Heights, PA, similar to the Marts, called the BAZAAR OF ALL NATIONS. There is actually a documentary out now available on DVD, and this is the website.

http://www.thebazaarofallnations.com/

Also, there is also a Quakertown Mart, or Q-Mart that is still open, but part of it was damaged by fire last year,

I try to go every year, as I'm from South Philly (but live in South Jersey now).  This year for the first time I took my four year old grandson to expeience the magic and he loved it.  Tradition rules in Philly, to this day.

Thank you for the recent postings of the Mart-related videos. The Bazaar
reminded me of the Pennsauken and perhaps Montgomery Marts (cousins?)

Hearing the interviews in the vid below, I'm reminded of the unique accents of
Philly area speakers. I've lived away from the Philly area since the early 70's,
and probably lost most of my accent; yet when I visit, or see/hear these videos,
I'm amazed/charmed how strong the accents are.

When approached by a Philly area tourist/visitor/transplant visiting Colorado, I
can usually tell they are from the Philly area (yet I can't discern the similar
Baltimore area accent -- I must be getting old).

How we Philadelphians (and surrounding communities) pronounce 'water' (waa-der)
or, in my parents' case, 'institute' (inz-tea-toot) helps to place the speaker.
Other words like spicket/spickot for faucet or pavement for sidewalk also seem
to be regional to the Philly area -- perhaps leftovers from colonial days?

Anyway, the familiar sounds/accents remind me of 'home' and for that I am
grateful.

Hi Michael,

I now live in Central New Jersey and I'm in the midst of transplanted people from Brooklyn NY, so I tend to stick out like a sore thumb. In fact my accent used to be very thick and I spoke English fairly poorly, you know, a lot of dees, does and dats. I never put that T on the end of the word cousin or called my ex my husbant. I joined a writer's group and cleaned up my speech a bit as I had to do some public speaking. But those long A's still remain as in the word baasket, and faast the way I pronounce the word aaout (out). I enjoy listening to the unique accents of Philly. And, at one time, I was able to discern a person from South Philly to my neck of the woods. I grew up in the Manayunk section of Philly. There's just certain parts of our accents we just never seem to lose. Honestly, I enjoy listening to how Philadelphians speak. Though I can get the news from NYC, I prefer to watch the news on channels 6 or 10 at night. This way I can keep up with what is going on in my hometown.

Jean,

Your signature line is so beautiful and correct. Now, back to the Mummer's Parade, I'll bet your grandson loved every minute of it, too! And, as far as I'm concerned, it's not New Year's Day without the Mummer's Parade. I'm in Central New Jersey, now, and I was thrilled that my cable company makes it possible for me to enjoy it year after year. Another event I never miss is the Philly bike race. That goes through my old neighborhoods.

Oh Debbie, memories...when I was growing up in Chester County, my best friend's grandfather had a horseradish farm. He would grind it in the barn and we used to LOVE running in and out of the barn with our noses and eyes burning. I LOVE that smell -- it's a smell of some of my most cherished times as a child.

A visual for my co-worker was found in the link below; it contains a few nostalgic Philadelphia and suburban NJ pictures.

Jeannie,

I am of Polish decent and I was raised on horse radish! I cannot eat hot spicy foods, but I can sure enjoy my horse radish. Also, it's one of the best things God ever made to clear out a person's sinus.!

Se,, and we are getting to share all of these memories, and all because of one beautiful spirit of a man, Gene London.

Thanks so much for posting this! I lived in Pennsauken, Merchantville section
from age 4 to 17 and I do remember The Mart! I've enjoyed reading all the
memories of everyone and can also relate to being able to 'spot a philly accent'
anywhere as I was born in Altoona, believe me the accent is thicker in the
mountains.
My Mart memory is comic books for 10 cents, I was allowed to get 10 but usually
came home with 12 or 13, how could a Dad say no? I remember how the vendors
would stand in the front of their stores, talking you in, it gave the place a
carnival type atmosphere. Thanks for those photos and video, I had forgotten
those hanging signs!
Jeannie, I remember the diving horse too, I have a vivid memory of my
grandfather running down the boardwalk with me so as not to miss it. I too,
felt sad for the horses. Don't know if you know of it but Disney made a movie
in 1991 about the girl who was blinded in a dive. Here is a link to that -
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103262/
In case that doesn't work, it is called 'Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken'
Lastly, I know I read a posting from someone about where the pretzel vendor from
The Mart went, oh the wonderful memories of those pretzels! I cannot find it
again, I've looked threw all the messages twice. I am still in the South Jersey
area, I'd love to take my kids there. Can someone re-post that? I'd really
appreciate it! I believe it was a person who said they owned the record shop in
The Mart - I remember that record shop well! I am also loving knowing where
most of the vendors went to, someone posted the Grand Market Place, I'll be sure
to go there and check it out.
oh, and let's not forget the famous warsch (wash) from Pa!

Ugh! Now you have me craving a water ice and a nice, fresh, soft pretzel with mustard! <VBG> Shame on you!  I'll tell you, the best soft pretzel experience I had when I was a kid. I'd bought a water ice and a pretzel and got caught in a thunder storm as I ran home with my treasures. Yum, rain water mixed with a salty soft pretzel!

GL's birthday?

Looking at a few places on the Internet, the year, and birth place is listed,
but not the month/day.

Interestingly, most sites have Gene born in Cleveland, but IMDB, (the source for
film and TV) lists NYC.

I note he turns/ed 80 this year. Wish I could send, or better still, celebrate,
his birthday with him.

Hi All,

I also have had a great time reading the posts and sharing in your memories. Although I never made it to "The Mart", it sounds wonderful. I was born and raised on 2nd Street in South Philly so the Mummers Parade is near and dear to me. I marched in my first parade at 18 months old and still march with a String Band today (trust me that's a lot of Parades). And Debbie, you put the thought of water ice in my head now. Nothing like a big cherry flavored water ice from "Pops" on Oregon Avenue to top off a Holiday weekend. I will get over and get one and thank you for it ! Have a great one weekend everyone.

A few months ago I spoke with a man named Boo from Atlantic City.  He is an avid AC collector like myself.
He knew the sisters who rode the horses.  He swears the horses were not abused.  They didn't mind the jump and if they did they were not used.

One horse jolted 1x on the way down and the rider opened her eyes to see what was going on & that quickly they hit the water.  Nothing was wrong that anyone could see that made the horse suddenly jolt...but...the rider had done a no-no and had eye damage & eventually rode blind.

The horses & the sisters loved what they did.

I cannot find it again, I've looked threw all the messages twice. I am still in the South Jersey area, I'd love to take my kids there. Can someone re-post that? I'd really appreciate it! I believe it was a person who said they owned the record shop in The Mart - I remember that record shop well! I am also loving knowing where most of the vendors went to, someone posted the Grand Market Place, I'll be sure to go there and check it out.
