MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Spotlights "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

In March, MSNBC's The Rachel Maddow Show aired two segments addressing the U.S. military's ban on openly gay military personnel. On March 3, host Rachel Maddow featured Dr. Nathaniel Frank, a senior research fellow at the Palm Center and author of Unfriendly Fire: How the Gay Ban Undermines the Military and Weakens America. Frank eloquently discussed the flawed logic that led to the creation of the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. Then on March 20, Maddow welcomed West Point graduate Lieutenant Dan Choi from the group Knights Out, an organization of LGBT West Point military alumni who are advocating for the repeal of the ban. Choi shared his story about being an openly gay service member and talked about the harmful effects of the policy. Choi says "Don't Ask Don't Tell" is immoral because it causes soldiers who are selflessly serving their country to lie.

Judge Judy Speaks Out on CNN's Larry King Live in Favor of Marriage for Same-Sex Couples

On March 16, popular outspoken daytime TV personality Judith "Judge Judy" Sheindlin minced no words when CNN's Larry King asked her to comment on Prop 8's passage in California, which stripped marriage equality from same-sex couples in the Golden State. Among other remarks denouncing Prop 8, Judge Judy said, "Why the state should be interested in proscribing the word marriage from two people who love each other, who are responsible, tax-paying, productive people, who have created a family, sometimes two people, sometimes two people and children – why the state would have an interest in proscribing that kind of conduct, I don't understand." She also reminded viewers that "the world is changing and we have to change along with it."

Fort Myers News-Press Editorializes in Favor of Adoption for Gay and Lesbian Couples

Editors at the Fort Myers News-Press in Fort Myers, Florida denounced the state's 30-year ban on adoption by openly gay people. The March 24 editorial, "Help Kids, Let Gays Adopt," urges state lawmakers to seriously consider new legislation that would end the ban. "Despite the desperate need for adoptive homes in Florida, gays still cannot be full adoptive parents because of a 30-year ban grounded in ignorance and prejudice," the editorial reads. The piece goes on to debunk misleading claims made by anti-gay activists:  "The best evidence suggests that successful parenting does not depend on sexual orientation."

The Washington Post Spotlights the Plight of Binational couples in the United States

The Washington Post published a March 16 editorial urging passage of the federal Uniting American Families Act, legislation that would allow gay, lesbian and bi American citizens to sponsor a same-sex partner for permanent residency in the United States. The editorial, titled "Separation Anxiety: Gay couples should be allowed to stay together in the United States," quotes one of the bill's sponsors, Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, who says, "The promotion of family unity has long been part of federal immigration policy, and we should honor that principle by providing all Americans the opportunity to be with their loved ones.'" The piece goes on to explain that same-sex couples would go through the exact same rigors of proving their relationships are legitimate as straight married couples and concludes, "American gays and lesbians should not have to choose between their country and their partners."

San Jose Mercury News Humanizes Struggles of Binational Couples

On March 29, the San Jose Mercury News devoted significant space to the story of Shirley Tan, who is on the verge of deportation to the Philippines because her partner, Jaylynn Mercado, a U.S. citizen, cannot sponsor her for permanent residency. The couple has twin 12-year-old sons and their family risks being torn apart because of the lack of protections for same-sex couples under current U.S. immigration law. In the article, "Binational, same-sex couples face immigration problems," reporter Mike Swift takes readers through Tan and Mercado's tumultuous battle to keep their family intact. "'It's hard when they are breaking up families,' said a tearful Mercado, as she sat next to Tan in the house the couple owns overlooking the Pacific Ocean. ‘Why can't they just leave us alone? Just because I am not a man, that I cannot petition her (for a green card), they are punishing us.'"

Colorado Radio Host on KNUS and KFKA Makes Remarks Condoning Violence Against Transgender People

In a disturbing diatribe on KNUS radio on March 14, host Trevor Carey engaged in a conversation with a caller in which both men condoned violence against transgender people, blaming slain Greeley, Colo. resident Angie Zapata, an 18-year-old transgender woman, for her own brutal murder.

You can read the full transcript here: http://colorado.mediamatters.org/items/200903160001

GLAAD issued a call to action urging Carey to apologize to the family of Angie Zapata, the transgender community and all Coloradans for condoning and promoting the very hostile climate that puts transgender people in harm's way and then blames them for the resulting acts of violence committed against them.

Rush Limbaugh Uses North Dakota Flooding Tragedy to Make Gratuitous Jokes

Syndicated radio host Rush Limbaugh used the March flooding situation on the Red River in Fargo, North Dakota to make anti-gay jokes about the word "dike," which newscasters used interchangeably with the word "levee" in their descriptions of the flooded area. Media Matters for America posted audio of the nonsensical Limbaugh commentary.

LISTEN TO AUDIO:
http://mediamatters.org/countyfair/200903270021

And the blog Towleroad posted part of the transcript:

http://www.towleroad.com/2009/03/limbaugh-uses-fargo-floods-to-express-antigay-disgust.html

"I heard some top of the hour news and it made me feel uncomfortable. It's about the flooding in Fargo, North Dakota brought on by the melting snowpack and the icepack. (reading from news item) "As the Red River threatens to overflow, they're filling in the dikes." Isn't there a more appropriate word? Do we have to say, I mean, we don't have any dikes here. The 'dykes' are over there...They're filling in the dikes. Couldn't we change that to 'they're filling in the contingencies' or something?...We really need to change that word."

Using Fargo's tragic circumstances to make juvenile anti-gay jokes was a slap in the face to the people of North Dakota facing the disaster, and was yet another crass display from the notoriously offensive Limbaugh.

TAKE ACTION:
Rush Limbaugh's radio program is syndicated by Premiere Radio Networks, which is a subsidiary of Clear Channel Communications.  GLAAD encourages you to contact Clear Channel and its CEO, Mark Mays and voice your concerns about Limbaugh's usage of an anti-gay slur in coverage of a terrible tragedy.

HERE! GETS A SUGAR RUSH

Critically-acclaimed lesbian television series now a part network's fall line-up

here!, is pleased to announce that it has acquired both seasons of the highly acclaimed, UK's Channel Four produced British series Sugar Rush from Sony Pictures Television.

The first season of this award-winning drama will be debuting on the network in the fall of 2008.  Both seasons consist of 10 half-hour episodes.  here! will be holding sneak-peak screenings of the first 3 episodes of the series  for select preview audiences at several major LGBT film festivals, including New York's NEWfest in June and Los Angeles' Outfest in July.

Based on the Julie Burchill novel of the same name, Sugar Rush revolves around 15 year-old Kim (Olivia Hallinan) and her desperate crush on her sexy and fabulous best friend, Maria Sweet, AKA Sugar (Lenora Crichlow).  Kim also must contend with her dysfunctional, embarrassing family as well as her new life in Brighton.  Experiencing forbidden love (or lust) for the first time, Kim forges her own path through life.  Her wry observations and bad girl ways have made her a popular anti-heroine for young British lesbians, demonstrating what it's like to be young and queer in the UK today.

Sugar Rush previously won the Children and Young People Award at the British Emmys in 2006 and was nominated by the British Academy of Film and Television Award in 2006 for Best Drama Series.

"We are thrilled to announce the acquisition of this jewel of a television series for our network.  Sugar Rush is a highly-compelling character-driven series which appeals to our growing lesbian audience.  It already has a large British following and we are confident that American audiences will be just as enthralled by this wonderful show," said Mark Reinhart, General Manager and Executive Vice President Distribution and Acquisitions.

Just as here!'s GLAAD-award winning The DL Chronicles did in blazing its own trail by telling intelligent stories involving gay men of color, Sugar Rush is a show completely original in style and theme as it breaks new ground in exploring the lives of young lesbians with a provocative sophistication.

here! is positive that Sugar Rush will give its audience a sweet tooth.

HERE! SET TO PREMIERE

ON THE OTHER HAND, DEATH: A DONALD STRACHEY MYSTERY

Margot Kidder co-stars in the next gay private investigator thriller

here! is set to premiere On the Other Hand, Death: A Donald Strachey Mystery.  The third installment in the franchise once again stars Chad Allen as the gay private investigator and co-stars screen legend Margot Kidder (Superman).   On the Other Hand, Death will be making its network debut on Friday, July 25th.  It will also be available in select theaters starting July 18th.

The Donald Strachey Mysteries has been a groundbreaking franchise for here! Networks, in that the films feature an openly gay protagonist who breaks stereotypes by being the hero in these gritty crime dramas.  Furthermore, in what is a rarity in mainstream entertainment, Strachey is involved in a healthy, functional, loving and monogamous relationship with another man, his husband, New York State Senate staffer Tim Callahan (Sebastian Spence).  The relationship is explored in fun, entertaining and thought-provoking ways.  Moreover, the films tend to explore important and relevant themes to the gay community.  The series' first film, Third Man Out, dealt with the controversial subject of outing.  The second film, Shock to the System, saw Strachey investigate an ex-gay "reparative therapy" group.  On the Other Hand, Death delves into gay hate crimes and the difficulties faced by LGBT teens.  A resource for gay teens contemplating suicide, The Trevor Project, is prominently mentioned in the film.

Directed by Ron Oliver (Queer as Folk, here!'s Kiss Me Deadly: A Jacob Keane Assignment) and based on the book by Richard Stevenson, On the Other Hand, Death begins with Dorothy (Kidder) and Edith (Gabrielle Rose) sleeping in each other's arms on the second floor of their long-time farmhouse.  Downstairs, a shadowy figure breaks through the glass door.  When Edith goes to investigate the noise, she discovers graffiti sprawled across the walls. The hateful message reads "DYKES GO HOME."

After speaking with their neighbors, Donald discovers that Dorothy and Edith rejected a developer's over-priced bid for their property.  Everyone else in the neighborhood wanted desperately to sell their homes, and Edith would have sold as well, but Dorothy wanted to keep her home of nearly forty years rather than make money for corporate profit.  Meanwhile, things start to get complicated when the sexy and charming Andrew, Tim's ex-boyfriend and good friend of Dorothy, comes into the picture.  Andrew makes a pass at Donald and challenges Donald's loyalty to Tim.  Andrew's presence puts Donald and Tim's commitment to their marriage to the test.

Not only has the series already produced two successful films, it also has drawn interest from well-known stars of film, television and stage to star in supporting roles, including Sean Young in Third Man Out and Morgan Fairchild in Shock to the System.  The fourth installment in the franchise is titled Ice Blues and will be premiering in the fall and co-starring Sherry Miller (Queer as Folk).

"We're thrilled that Chad Allen is reprising his role as the sexy, gay, tough-guy detective Donald Strachey, and that we can offer his fans two additional installments of this popular franchise in 2008," says here!'s Senior Vice President of Original Programming, Meredith Kadlec.

here! is confident that On the Other Hand, Death will continue to add depth and mystery to a trailblazing and exciting franchise of original films.

Casper Andreas' third feature film "Between Love & Goodbye" to premier at film festivals this month
Between Love & Goodbye, the latest feature film from award-winning writer/director Casper Andreas, will have its world premiere at The Pink Apple Film Festival in Zurich, Switzerland on May 3rd. The film is playing twice over the weekend and the screenings will be followed by a Q&A with the director.

"I am thrilled to premiere Between Love & Goodbye at the Pink Apple," says Andreas. "The festival has always been very supportive of my work. Though Between Love & Goodbye in many ways is a very New York film, it has also been described as a very European film and I hope the Swiss audiences will enjoy it."

Roland Loosli, programming director of The Pink Apple Film Festival, certainly believe they will. "Between Love & Goodbye fascinates with its fantastic original soundtrack and its talented and sexy actors", Loosli says. "The Pink Apple Film Festival is proud to present Andreas' magnificent new film as a world premiere!"

Upcoming festivals for the film include The Honolulu Rainbow Film Festival, where Between Love & Goodbye will be the Centerpiece Film on May 24th. The East Coast Premiere will be held early June at New York's Gay & Lesbian Film Festival NewFest.

Between Love & Goodbye is Andreas' first feature drama. Previous films include the romantic comedies Slutty Summer and A Four Letter Word (currently in theaters).

Between Love & Goodbye tells the story of Kyle (Simon Miller) and Marcel (Justin Tensen), and their rocky relationship. The feature also stars Rob Harmon and Jane Elliott. Shot on location in New York in September of 2007, Between Love & Goodbye was produced by Casper Andreas and Markus Goetze.

Sexy horror film set to make its debut on the network

here! is pleased to announce that it will premiere the David Decoteau film, House of Usher, on May 9th.  The movie is loosely based on the Edgar Allan Poe classic short story, The Fall of the House of Usher.

Victor Reynolds (Michael Cardelle, As the World Turns) receives a desperate letter from his childhood friend and first love, Roderick Usher (Frank Mentier, Days of our Lives). Roderick, a notorious recluse, has not left the grounds of his hilltop mansion in many years. He is in bad health and he needs Victor's love and care to survive.  However, after a series of bizarre and spooky events, Victor realizes that both his friend and the house have a dark past that no one has lived to uncover.

here! hopes to add a chilling and erotic twist on this story through an attractive and talented cast, and a script that is sure to provide titillating suspense.  This classic tale of terror seeks to deliver the cinematic chills to all queer fans of the horror genre.

House of Usher will also be playing in selected theaters nationwide.

Here! Announces A Second Season Of "The Dl Chronicles"

The GLAAD-nominated series set to make another run

here! is pleased to announce that it will bring back the critically-acclaimed anthology series The DL Chronicles for a second season. It will premiere on the network in late 2008 and feature 5 new episodes.

The DL Chronicles was recently nominated for a GLAAD Media Award in the category of "Outstanding Television Movie or Mini-Series." The anthology series is the first television show to center on the "DL" phenomenon in the gay community. The DL (short for "down-low") refers to straight men of color who live their everyday lives as heterosexuals, often married to women, but engage in discreet gay sex and gay relationships on the periphery.

The show, created by Quincy Lenear and Deondray Gossett (2 Cents Productions), is not only sexy and provocative, but also offers a socially-conscious insight into the lines between sexuality and perceived socially acceptable behavior within the African-American community. It provides an unapologetic view of intimacy between men of color and explores these scintillating stories with honesty and integrity.

Cast in the role as narrator of The DL Chronicles, actor Damian T. Raven is Chadwick Williams, an aspiring journalist who pursues research while writing a book about 'men who sleep with men' (in contrast to those men who would classify themselves as gay). As Chadwick begins his research we are led into a seductively taboo world of carnal desires, conscience and consequence. The DL Chronicles features several different character-driven stories that lend perspective to the factors that influence the down-low lifestyle. Among the stories told in the upcoming season are that which involve a high school student's newfound gay relationship and its effects on his homophobic father, a reverend who questions his sexual identity and religious beliefs upon meeting a handsome stranger, and an interracial love story about two guys from different sides of the tracks.

"We are thrilled to continue our relationship with these incredibly talented and brave writer-directors. Quincy and Deondray's stories offer important insight into an aspect of our community that has been little explored until now," said Meredith Kadlec, Senior Vice President of Original Programming.

HERE! SET TO PREMIERE KISS ME DEADLY

Shannen Doherty and Robert Gant star in highly anticipated spy thriller

here! is pleased to announce the premiere of Kiss Me Deadly: A Jacob Keane Assignment.  The film, starring Shannen Doherty (Beverly Hills, 90210, Charmed) and Robert Gant (Queer as Folk) will be released theatrically and premiere on the network on May 2nd.

Doherty and Gant star as former spies caught in a web of dangerous intrigue.  Directed by Ron Oliver (Queer as Folk, here!'s Shock to the System and Third Man Out), and shot in New Zealand, Gant plays Jacob Keane, a photographer living the family life in Milan with his loving boyfriend, Paolo, and Julia, the daughter he shares with his lesbian friend, Kyra. When a young woman, Marta (Doherty), arrives from his past life, he is pulled back into the high-stakes world of international espionage. Together they must elude a mysterious enemy who becomes more of a threat the closer they come to revealing the truth about their alliance.

Similar in style to The Bourne Identity movies, the film also stars acclaimed character-actor John Rhys-Davies (from the final two installments of the Lord of the Rings trilogy) and features a suspenseful game of who-dun-it that questions the main characters' true loyalties.  Much like another here! hit original film franchise The Donald Strachey Mysteries – starring Chad Allen and also directed by Oliver – Kiss Me Deadly blazes a trail by going into often-uncharted territory:  placing its main character (Gant) as a courageous action-hero who also happens to be gay, as opposed to making his sexuality a central theme of the film.

"The filmmakers had an absolute blast re-imagining the spy genre with a gay element.  Robert and Shannen's chemistry makes the film all the more fun to watch," said Meredith Kadlec, Senior Vice President of Original Programming.

Recent and upcoming here! original films, series and specials include: Paradise Falls, a sexy dramatic series that follows the steamy scandals of the residents of a small town in the Northern woods, The DL Chronicles, a GLAAD Media award-nominated series focusing on the diverse stories of men of color who by consequence and by choice, live sexually duplicitous and secret lifestyles; The Lair, a provocative and sexy vampire horror series; Dante's Cove, ranked "Best Soap of the Year" by The Advocate; the provocative six-part docu-series Lesbian Sex and Sexuality, an unblinking look inside the world of lesbian culture from award-winning producer Katherine Linton; and the original film Shelter, a critically-acclaimed romantic drama about love, family and staying true to yourself.

HERE! IN PARADISE

Network set to air sexy new series Paradise Falls

here! has announced that it will premiere new episodes of the sizzling series Paradise Falls.  A brand new season will launch on the network on Friday, April 11th and debut 26 original episodes.

Welcome to Paradise Falls where the weather is always clear, the water is always calm and the residents are always up for some drama and intrigue.  Set in a vacation spot in the Northern woods and featuring a large and diverse cast of characters, Paradise Falls is poised to be a queer cross between Northern Exposure and Desperate Housewives.  It features an array of steamy love affairs, plot twists and suspenseful cliff-hangers that are sure to keep its audience guessing.

The show opens with the same-sex marriage between Nick and Sacha, but things do not go as planned, as the homophobic Francis shows up to stir up some mayhem.  This causes chaos at the nuptials, as the fiery Trish impedes Francis' drunken tirade and they begin to wrestle alongside the aisle.  Sacha, peeved that his dreams of a perfect wedding have veered out of control, forcefully urges everyone to stop and "Pretend that nothing ever happened!" as a couple of wedding guests accidentally go careening into the ocean.  But we all know that a show that begins with a wedding usually doesn't end in "happily ever after," and we are given clues as to what may lie ahead for this soon-to-be beleaguered union.

Chock-full-of gay weddings, porno-shoots, creepy cults, missing bodies, Pride Day celebrations, racy couples, boys with boys, girls with girls and an election full of dirty tricks, this series promises to keep its audience whet with anticipation as it awaits the next steamy plot twist.

"We are very excited to be airing 26 brand new episodes of Paradise Falls, while in the process showcasing our ongoing commitment to captivating storylines and multi-dimensional characters in gay and lesbian programming.  here! produces more content of this kind than any other producer, network or distribution company in the world," says Paul Colichman, CEO and Co-Founder of here! Networks.

Produced by Paula J. Smith and starring a beautiful and talented cast that includes the comedic talents of Julie Brown (Earth Girls are Easy, Six Feet Under) as a porn director, Paradise Falls promises to be funny, scandalous and take its audience on one great bumpy ride!

HERE! INTRODUCES JASON STUART: MAKING IT TO THE MIDDLE

A raucous new comedy special featuring out comedian Jason Stuart is set to premiere on the network.

here!, is thrilled to announce the premiere of Jason Stuart: Making it to the Middle.  Known as the first openly gay performer to headline mainstream comedy clubs all over the US, he is now the first male comedian to have his own stand-up comedy special on here! TV.  It will debut on the network on Friday, March 28th.

Filmed in Los Angeles at The Showcase Theatre for the Lifework Mentoring Program (a non-profit mentoring organization for gay youths), Jason Stuart: Making it to the Middle will feature a look at his hilarious rapid-fire stand-up routine as well offer as a poignant behind-the-scenes take at a brilliant comic in the middle of his career, in the middle of his life, and in the middle of the country.  Stuart sums this notion up best by quipping, "I always thought I'd be as famous as Barbra Streisand or as Lil Kim's wig washer.  I ended up being neither.  I made it to the middle."

Seen in over 100 films and television shows including as Dr. Thomas on My Wife and Kids and on the popular Chris Rock-produced Everybody Hates Chris (premiering May 11th), Stuart has had a remarkable career as an actor and comedian.  This year he will be adding to that impressive resume with roles in several films.  Among these are that of a naïve priest in Twisted Faith; a jaded doctor in Ping Pong Playa; a Nurse in a rehab center in Family of Four; and a bitchy fashion designer in Drop Dead Gorgeous.

When he's not blazing a trail as a performer on stage and screen, Stuart likes to "pay it forward" with his work in the gay community.  He is the chairman of the first ever SAG LGBT Committee.  "All I ever wanted to do was act, but being gay is part of who I am too.  This first meeting's is the culmination of my desire to provide LGBT SAG members with a platform to share their issues and to get support from their colleagues."

here! looks forward to giving this groundbreaking and gifted performer a venue to display his wonderful comedic talents.  And as for Jason Stuart, if this is only the middle, perhaps only the sky is the limit!
