As we embrace the beginning of a new era in television (digital broadcasting!), we look back 34 years ago today when 2 popular game shows bit the dust on CBS Daytime: The Joker's Wild and Now You See It

In the 686th and final CBS Joker episode, Fred Van Etton, the previous day's champion, emerged as the victor against 2 opponents (Linda Biggett and Robin April DeLugg), but wasn't as lucky when facing The Devil in the Money And Devils bonus round, in which Satan singed him twice! Finally, Fred, unwilling to take any chances, cut short his third attempt at the wheels (which was the last Money And Devils bonus round ever played on CBS' Joker), and decided to take $575 he'd accumulated. The fourth and final match on the game which pitted Fred Van Etton against Michael Malone (and appeared that Fred was about to meet defeat!), had to be aborted due to the time limit, what with this being the final telecast; Michael took home $400 while Fred added the $100 to his acquired winnings, bringing them to a grand total of $2, 275.

The climax saw Jack Barry giving a lengthy speech, in which he mentions his partner Dan Enright and mentioned TJW's replacement on CBS the following Monday:

"Ladies and gentlemen, this is the last Joker's Wild program. On Monday, a new program will appear here: it is called Spin-Off, and it features a very good friend of mine, Jim Lange. I hope that you will watch it, 'cause I'm sure you will enjoy it.

"686 programs ago, I had the distinct pleasure of saying, 'Welcome to
The Joker's Wild.’ I could not have been able to say that then, nor could I say goodbye to you now, without acknowledging the contributions made by my friends here at CBS, notably the chief of programs, Mr. Fred Silverman, Mr. Bud Grant, Mr. Oscar Katz, and Mr. Michael Ogiens; their patience has been monumental, their loyalty has been terrific, as it has been to those of you who are watching.

“I'd also like to pay a special tribute, along with my Executive Producer Dan Enright, to 2 individuals who have helped so much to make this the 3-year success that it has enjoyed here on CBS, in particular our Director, Richard Kline, without whom we could not have done the program, and the great contributions made by our Producer, Justin Edgerton. At the end of this program, I cannot---there is not time for me to list everybody; you will see a full list of the names of the people both on the technical staff and on the staff of my own company without whom we could not have brought you 686 programs.

"We hope that you have enjoyed them. It's been a great privilege for me to have been with you these 3 years; they have been the very, very happiest and most productive years of my life. We'll be seeing you again shortly, and so, for the 686th time, this is Jack Barry, for all of us here on
The Joker's Wild, thanking you for your loyalty, and saying goodbye."

Jack Barry then walked off the original set of The Joker's Wild for the very last time, and, after the fee plugs, the studio set in Studio 41 of CBS Television City gradually darkened, save for the lights of The Joker's Wild's 1-armed bandit slot machine, and the long credits crawl commences. The camera then zoomed in on the three windows of the giant 1-armed bandit—the only visible portion of the set—that displayed the show's title; these windows then shut off one by one, leaving the set dark.

Thus perished the original CBS Daytime edition of The Joker's Wild. By this time, it had abandoned its omnipresent Joker's Jackpot and Jokers And Devils bonus round in favor of a new Money And Devil's bonus round. It featured celebrity contestants playing for charity in January of 1974 and by this point had also instituted a new musical theme: Alan Thicke's "The Joker's Jive". The Joker's Wild, like its final champion, blew off every form of competition which was thrown at it, especially by NBC (RIP Name That Tune and Dinah’s Place). That is, until The Peacock locked and loaded Celebrity Sweepstakes, aimed it in the 10 a.m. spot at Joker on CBS in January 1975, and fired back with a vengeance. The Joker's Wild’s cancellation robbed The CBS Television Network of 1/3 of the first 3 new game shows to debut on its daytime schedule since cleaning house in 1968: the other 2 being The Price Is Right (which would extend to its current 60-minute format in November of that year) and Gambit (which had a year to go on the network). TJW was Jack Barry's last network game; his next hosting gig was the 1976-77 weekly syndicated primetime edition Break The Bank (after its 1976 ABC Daytime version [hosted by Tom Kennedy], despite monstrous ratings, fell victim to expanding daytime dramas), which he produced together with Dan Enright.

Barry and Enright sold repeats of the 1974-75 CBS season of The Joker's Wild to several markets, including KTLA in Los Angeles and WOR in New York (where it debuted in February 1977). The immense popularity of these repeats foreshadowed TJW's return to TV in a new first-run syndicated edition in September 1977, which yielded a 9-year hit!

Now You See It's finale ended with Dale Lourdes playing its final solo game and breaking a $5,000 bank. Jack Narz said at the end of this series, "On April 1, 1974, which was April Fool's Day, that's when we started! We've been on the air 13 months and 13 days, and this is Friday the 13th, and I think somebody's tryin' to tell me something!" (This may have provided insight as to why NYSI didn't last longer than it did!) Then he thanked the staff at CBS, the boys and girls on NYSI's staff, and the home audience for its support and letters, and remarked, "We've had a ball, and we'll see you soon!" TattleTales, another CBS Daytime Goodson-Todman staple, replaced NYSI the following Monday.

Now You See It was also Jack Narz's very last daytime network game show (until he briefly subbed for brother Tom Kennedy as host in March 1982 prior to the end of Password Plus' run on NBC); he continued to host G-T's syndicated Concentration until its conclusion in 1978 and finished his career doing announcing work (for Card Sharks and The All-New Beat The Clock) and guest shots on other GS; he passed away in 2008. And, like The Joker's Wild (which was axed along with it), Now You See It would be brought back to CBS in 1989, with a couple of changes: Los Angeles-based KABC-TV newsman Chuck Henry as new host and with minor rule changes from the final edition of the 1975 version. The revived NYSI went head-to-head against NBC’s ratings monster, Classic Concentration (a resurrection of the previous 1973-78 Jack Narz-emceed G-T favorite!), and lasted just 15 miserable weeks. Henry, now an anchor/reporter for the 6:00 and 11:00 newscasts for KNBC-TV Channel 4 (the Burbank NBC affiliate), was apparently embarrassed at his lone game show hosting stint, and, feeling it would taint his reputation as a newscaster, has strictly enforced that his version of NYSI not be rerun by anyone!

It's more than Password, it's Password+Plus!”

Password+Plus, a fourth incarnation of Goodson-Todman’s tried and true star-studded War Of The Words, premiered @ 11:30 a.m. Eastern on NBC Daytime (following the debut of All-Star Secrets, a Bob Eubanks-hosted vehicle). Originally announced in Variety as Password '79, a decision was made two weeks before the debut to change the title to Password+Plus. 59-year-old Allen Ludden was back in the saddle as emcee, and Gene Wood was tapped to be announcer; Elizabeth Montgomery and Robert Foxworth, both topnotch Password players of the past, were the first-week celebrities. (John Harlan [who also announced ABC’s Password], Bob Hilton and Johnny Olsen also took their turns at announcing during the run.)

Here, 2 celebrity/contestant teams compete. The object here is to solve a "Password Puzzle", a famous person, place, thing, or title. Up to 5 Passwords are guessed by the teams, with each Password working as a clue to The Password Puzzle. Teams alternate giving clues, with each team receiving 2 chances. When a team guesses a password, they are given a chance to solve The Password Puzzle to win the round. Teams alternate playing first and giving/guessing as in the classic Password game. Rounds 1 & 2 are worth $100 each, rounds 3 & 4 $200 each. The first team to amass/exceed $300 wins the match and earns the right to play the bonus round: "Alphabetics," a revamped edition of the old “Lightning Round” in the Passwords of the past (and borrowing a bit from ABC’s The $20,000 Pyramid).

Alphabetics is played with 10 Passwords that start with 10 consecutive letters of the alphabet. The celebrity has 60 seconds to convey the Passwords to the contestant as in The Lightning Round. Each Password must be solved or passed before the next Password is revealed, and a celebrity can only go back to those words he/she passed on after revealing all 10. Each Password solved is worth $100, and completing all 10 Passwords wins the contestant $5,000. If the celebrity gives an illegal clue, the potential jackpot was lowered by $1,000.

The game managed to survive the loss of Allen Ludden, who, due to illness, was forced to retire from the show in October 1980 and was superseded by Tom Kennedy. (Ludden previously took a 4-week sabbatical in April 1980 to have surgery done on him, and Bill Cullen hosted in his stead.) An all-celebrity week was scheduled for the first Kennedy week of shows in order to ease the transition, which was comprised of Jim Perry from Card Sharks, Greg Morris, Judy Norton-Taylor and Nancy Walker. Tom said some heartfelt words about Allen before the start of his first show (“To Allen Ludden: with each show, we send you our love. Our thoughts are with you.”), and then moved right into the game. Kennedy did indeed guide viewers through its most trying transitional period, even in the wake of Ludden’s passing in June 1981 (which was never mentioned on the show).

Rich Jefferies had replaced Gene Wood as announcer by this point. Near the end of the run, in March 1982, Jack Narz, Tom Kennedy’s brother, swapped places with him for one game during his week playing Password+Plus; Jack hosted and Tom played. On March 26, Password+Plus wrapped up a shaky yet nice 3 ½-year run on NBC, after 800 shows. The final celebrity panelists were Audrey Landers and Tom Poston. Tom Kennedy mentioned his late friend and colleague in the show’s fading moments:

"This is the last in our series of Password+Plus, and even though our dear friend Allen Ludden isn't with us at this particular moment, as you well know he hosted this show as only as he could do for something like 18 years. And so, I was very proud to have the last year and a half here at the helm. All I can say is you know the show's going to be back soon, so until then, on behalf of all the people with Goodson-Todman, who have the best staff in the entire world; NBC, the best network—I don't care what anybody says!—we got a crew around here that just simply cannot be beat. There are too many people to bring up onstage; I'd love to do it, but I wouldn't know all the names anyway. I'm so bad; it's just awful! It has been absolutely terrific, so what we want to say to you, though, is thank you for being the great friends you have been through all 20 years. It'll be back soon, and we'll all look forward to seeing you again real soon. On behalf of all of us, 'bye for now, and be good to yourselves!"

Sure enough, 2 years later, in September 1984, Password was back on NBC…in the form of the newly revamped Super Password, emceed by Bert Convy.

“Ladies and gentlemen, today, one of these stars is sitting The Secret Square, and the contestant who picks it first could win a prize package worth over $2000! And now which star is it? (drumroll with brass note before each star's name) Nick Adams...Agnes Moorehead...Charley Weaver...Pamela Mason...Wally Cox...Rose Marie...Morey Amsterdam...Abby Dalton...or Ernest Borgnine? All in The Hollywood Squares! And now, here's the master of The Hollywood Squares, Peter Marshall!”

That was announcer Kenny Williams’ opening spiel to the premiere telecast of The Hollywood Squares, Heatter-Quigley's tic-tac-toe game of the stars, which occurred in living color on NBC @ 11:30 a.m. EST, opposite The Dating Game on ABC and reruns of The Dick Van Dyke Show on CBS. (The latter competitor was ironic since Dick Van Dyke Show regulars Morey Amsterdam and Rose Marie were guests on that first week, and in fact stayed regulars for years.)

Ernest Borgnine was the first Square to occupy The Center Square on the first NBC week of Squares shows (October 17-21, 1966). Paul Lynde, the show's celebrated Center Square, first appeared with the cast during the second week (October 24, 1966 to October 28, 1966), and, after a couple of years as just a recurring guest, was added as a regular full-time in 1968. Rose Marie and announcer Kenny Williams are the only regulars to appear in the first and last episodes of The Hollywood Squares and the unsold 1965 pilot recorded @ CBS Television City hosted by Bert Parks.

The immense popularity of The Hollywood Squares yielded a brief primetime edition on NBC, seen every Friday night @ 9:30 (EDT) between January 12 and September 13, 1968. Another primetime edition, this time in syndication, was launched in November 1971. The daytime version became the second longest-running game show in NBC Daytime history (right after 1958-73's Concentration!), lasting for 14 seasons and 3,536 episodes until June 20, 1980. Host Peter Marshall tried to assure viewers that "we're going to have some fun!" on the finale, but several jokes and comments (funny or not) seemed directed at The Peacock Network and Fred Silverman, at the time its head of programming.

Celebrities on the last NBC Daytime grid were Rose Marie, Tom Poston, Michelle Lee, Charlie Callas, Vincent Price, Leslie Uggams, George Gobel, Marty Allen, and Wayland Flowers & Madame (who were center square, since Paul Lynde had left the show by this point in a dispute, and, surprisingly enough, no direct mention of him was made on the final show!). George Gobel was the last daytime Secret Square but no one picked him during that game.

Wayland and Madame were heavily criticized for taking up too much precious time on The Hollywood Squares' final show, at times even getting host Marshall's goat as he desperately attempted to hasten the show's pace for its duration since a new car was at stake; sadly, time ran out before the contestants got a chance, but Marshall made up for it by giving them a shot at the bonus prize. The finale's fading minutes found Peter Marshall bringing the stars and the production staff on camera to introduce them (including producers Merrill Heatter and Bob Quigley), and made special references in his departing speech:

"I want to thank all of the stars of the past, and people like Wally Cox and Charley Weaver, and folks like that that we miss terribly, but thank God for The George Gobels and...all the people who do our show. So, on behalf of the staff of Heatter-Quigley, and of all these people who work here at NBC---and they are the best!---we may be #3, but if we get another show like ours, then we can be #1 again!

"So, on behalf of everybody, and on behalf of my wife Sally, and my 6 children and my 2 grandchildren, thank
you! You have made us the hit that we have been! Thank you out there! You are the ones who have been responsible!”

The Hollywood Squares was one of 3 game shows plucked from the NBC Daytime schedule to make room for David Letterman's ill-fated 90-minute daytime show (ironically, Letterman had earlier on appeared as one of The Squares!): the others were The New High Rollers, another Heatter-Quigley staple, and Chain Reaction. Its syndicated primetime version continued for one more year, with Paul Lynde returning to his old center square, expanding to five nights a week, and switching operations from NBC Studio 3 in Burbank to The Riveria Hotel in Las Vegas. (Another popular game show shares the honor with The Hollywood Squares of defecting to The Riveria Hotel: Let's Make A Deal, whose host, Monty Hall, was another one of The Squares!) Lynde would leave the show again, but return for a walk-on in the syndication finale. And George Gobel was once again the last ever center square.

A good game show, as it is proven, never dies (or stays dead for long); it just keeps coming back in different incarnations. The Hollywood Squares made living proof of that thrice: on NBC in 1983, as the ill-fated Match Game/Hollywood Squares Hour, with the MG portion emceed (for one last time) by Gene Rayburn and the Squares portion hosted by Sha-Na-Na alumnus Jon "Bowzer" Bauman; in 1986, as the syndicated New Hollywood Squares, hosted by old Hollywood Squares regular John Davidson and announced by Shadoe Stevens; and, of course, the 1998-2004 version, hosted by Tom Bergeron and formerly featuring Whoopi Goldberg as The Center Square (Ellen DeGeneres later performed in Goldberg's stead). But regardless of how many times it is resurrected, it is always the original 1966-81 version which shall remain fresh in the hearts of game show enthusiasts world wide...even though NBC did erase all but its final 2 years for reuse!

Then in 2001, a representative of Dan Curtis Productions, Jim Pierson, went looking for the few still-lost color videotapes of the 1960s gothic ABC soap, Dark Shadows…and happened upon "shelves and shelves" of two-inch quad masters, of what Peter Marshall himself placed at over 3,000 classic Hollywood Squares shows dating from 1968 to the late 1970s! GSN snatched up about 150 episodes and unveiled the newly rediscovered Squares reruns on April 15, 2002.

First up was Episode 10 of the NBC primetime series (complete with original NBC Peacock opening!!!), which first aired in living color (sic!) @ 9:30 p.m. (Eastern) on March 22, 1968. The celeb panel was comprised of Wally Cox, Nanette Fabray, Sally Field, Zsa Zsa Gbor, Buddy Hackett, Van Johnson, Walter Matthau, Jan Murray, and Charley Weaver. Cherubic Peter Marshall flanked Naval officer Deiter Dengler (X) and happy homemaker Donna Brown (O). The secret square in the first round was Van Johnson; Donna picked him and managed to win a new 1968 Pontiac Firebird! Walter Matthau was the next secret square, worth a trip to Rio De Janeiro by PanAm, though no one picked him. Deiter Dengler won 1 game and $300; Donna Brown (who's given to screaming fits of excitement each time she wins!) won 4 games for a total of $1,200 and, in addition to winning a Firebird, won a bonus prize at show's end: a contemporary grand piano by Kimball! Departing contestants received a home edition of The Hollywood Squares (the first edition!) and a World Book Encylopaedia.

Later that day, two 1970s shows and another NBC primetime telecast from 1968 were shown. Prior to its pulling the reruns in September 2003, GSN has run more than half of the 1968 NBC prime time shows and roughly a hundred of the 1971-81 syndicated shows, including a Storybook Squares episode from December 1977 which aired around Halloween 2002.

CBS Television honored the daytime premieres of 2 Great Game Shows: The $25,000 Pyramid and Child's Play!

The $25,000 Pyramid, a new edition of the game show created by Bob Stewart and hosted by Dick Clark, returned to CBS-TV @ 10:00am EDT (after an 8-year absence!), with Constance McCashin and Robert Mandan as the guests for the premiere week, and episodes now videotaped at CBS Television City Studio #33, situated @ 7800 Beverly Boulevard in Los Angeles, CA. It followed the ill-fated 1982 syndicated $50,000 Pyramid, distributed by Chicago-based CPM, Inc., the Pyramid which introduced the "round-robin style tournament" format of the series, something which would also be employed for the $100,000 version (more on that later). Almost 2 months later, on Monday, November 8, 1982, the show became The New $25,000 Pyramid to avoid confusion with the same-titled 1974-79 Bill Cullen syndie primetime version; the "New" was removed from the title effective the January 28, 1985 episode (#608). That same year, the success of the CBS Daytime version yielded a daily nighttime version, The $100,000 Pyramid (syndicated originally by 20th Century-Fox Television), which debuted on on various stations Monday, September 9, 1985 with debut guests Vicki Lawrence and Brian Mitchell.

After 6 years, The $25,000 Pyramid aired for the 1,404th and final time on CBS Daytime television on Friday, July 1, 1988. By this time, the show had renewed the format of the opening montage of past winners, one which had been long a staple on Pyramid during the '70s. The final 2 celebrity guests were Robin Riker-Hasley and Charlie Siebert. And, sadly, neither of the civilian contestants reached the top of The Pyramid in this final telecast! This was actually the second cancellation of The $25,000 Pyramid; when CBS first dropped it on New Year's Eve, 1987 (with guests Anne Marie Johnson and Robert Hegyes), after 5 years and 1,339 shows, its replacement, the Bob Goen-hosted Jay Wolpert Production Blackout, left much to be desired. So, by popular demand, The $25,000 Pyramid returned to CBS after 13 weeks, thus making it the only game show in TV history to be replaced by another game and then in return replace that same game!

Rumor had it that CBS revived The $25,000 Pyramid as only filler while Mark Goodson Productions' revival of Family Feud starring Ray Combs was being groomed for its premiere, which occurred the following Monday, replacing Pyramid. This was the second time that The Feud has replaced the timeslot of a cancelled Pyramid; the first happened in June 1980, after The $20,000 Pyramid completed a 7-year run on ABC.

The nighttime $100,000 Pyramid stayed humming in syndication for 2 months until calling it 3 years and 545 shows on September 2, 1988, thus bringing down the curtain on the Pyramid chapter for the 1980s.

Child's Play, which premiered on CBS directly after @ 10:30am EDT,  was a neat Mark Goodson-created game kid's/adult's game played similarly to Pyramid, hosted, ironically, by former Pyramid emcee Bill Cullen! Two contestents, one a champion, face off. In Round 1, three definitions are played, each with a maximum of three children (who were recorded on videotape that was being shown onscreen to the contestents) giving each definition. The first person to guess is the challenger or the player who didn't correctly guess in the final round. Each correct answer is one point.

Then, a "Fast Play" round is played with a kid giving a definition, and a player buzzing in to guess; correct answers are worth 2 points. The player with the most points when time runs out wins the game and $500. The maximum time a player can stay on the game is 5 days straight.

Through its one-season run on CBS Daytime (September 20, 1982-September 16, 1983), Child's Play had two different endgames, with the switch being made in Spring 1983: in the "Triple Play" end round (September 1982-May 1983?) the contestent has to guess six definations, they pick one of three definations written by some of the children who appeared earlier on in the show. If incorrect, they pick a definition for the same word by another child. Getting 6 correct definitions in 45 seconds wins $5,000, if not they win $100 per correctly guessed definition. In the "Turnabout" end round (May?-September 1983), an inverted version of its predecessor, the champion has to convey words to five children on stage who had previously appeared on the program in the frontgame definitions. Getting 7 right answers is worth $5,000, if not, $100 per word.

Child's Play was the first ever Mark Goodson Production without Bill Todman (who, sadly, was 3 years dead at the time; fellow CBS games The Price Is Right and TattleTales and other G-T games would follow suit in changed names). Also, it was Bill Cullen's final game show for Goodson after 30 years emceeing games for the company (as well as his next assignment following his 1980-82 stint on rival NBC's Blockbusters).

"The NBC Television Network Presents... (toy piano- and slide whistle-fanfare) Concentration!"

That famous opening spiel was intoned for the very first time when the popular game show based on the children's game, created by Jack Barry, Dan Enright, Robert Noah and Buddy Piper, in which matching like cards is the key, while adding the ever-popular "rebus" puzzles to create an endlessly fascinating game of wits, had its debut on NBC Daytime. Concentration would eventually go on to become the longest-running daytime game show in NBC history, airing for 15 years and 3,796 shows, through March 23, 1973.

Concentration was emceed by Jack Barry (1958), Hugh Downs (1958-68) and Bob Clayton (1969-74). Many guests hosts appeared between '68 and '69, including Art James, Bill Mazur, and Ed McMahon! Two NBC prime-time series of Concentration were spawned as well: a four-week run in 1958 with Barry (October 30 to November 20), and a five-month full-color run in 1961 with Downs (April 17 to September 18). In 1968, Downs won an Emmy for hosting the daytime Concentration.

Shortly after its debut, Jack Barry and Dan Enright were forced to surrender their rights to this show as a result of The Quiz Show Scandals. At the end of the NBC run, the rights to Concentration switched to Mark Goodson-Bill Todman Productions, who oversaw both of the later versions of this show: the 1973-79 syndicated edition hosted by Jack Narz (Now You See It), and the 1987-91 NBC Daytime revival, Classic Concentration, emceed by Alex Trebek (Jeopardy!). It remains one of only 3 programs in Goodson-Todman's entire game show repertoire that was not created by the company; the others being the Bob Stewart-created Price Is Right in 1956 and Hollywood Squares component of 1983-84's Match Game/Hollywood Squares Hour.

The videotapes of virtually every segment of the original 1958-73 NBC-produced version of Concentration were unfortunately destroyed or wiped clean for reuse by The Peacock Network (save for a precious few!), but all of the Goodson-Todman-produced episodes remain. NBC still retains the rights to the show, which explains the appalling dearth of repeats of Concentration on Game Show Network.

Afterword: Bob Clayton, the final host, signed a contract with Bob Stewart Productions to be the announcer of the hit game show which premiered on CBS the very Monday following Concentration's demise on NBC: The $10,000 Pyramid! (Clayton passed away in 1979.) Hugh Downs later became an anchor for ABC News, hosting the TV news magazine 20/20 with Barbara Walters. Ed McMahon became the aide de camp of Johnny Carson for thirty years on his Tonight Show. And, of course, Jack Barry's exile from TV due to The Scandals (aside from brief emceeing duties on Juvenile Jury and The Reel Game) would officially end with the September 4, 1972 CBS Daytime premiere of The Joker's Wild!
