I was especially impressed with the Jabberwokez (sp?) because they
wear masks, and when asked why, they said that they didn't want the
individual dancers to take away from the whole, big picture. Very
cool!
The first airing (last night & the dates currently on the webpage) was
a try-out episode, and it looks like it will be shown a couple of more
times.

Apparently I missed the first week, but I'll pass it along anyway in
case anyone's interested.
PBS has America's Ballroom Challenge currently on. Here's the webpage
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/ballroomchallenge/ Be sure to check the local
listings (under the times on the right column), as they do vary with
the PBS stations able to play what works better in their market.
Enjoy (if ballroom is your cup of tea!)!

I care- somewhat - I'm currently taking tap dance classes
on Mondays from 7 - 8 PM. By the time I get home it's 8:30,
so I miss half the show, but I see it the next day (was today)
on the ABC website.
Once again, I thought Bruno's team was better, although there
are a few members of Carrie Anne's tream that I like.
Actually, the best number in the show was the opening number,
done by everyone! But I have to admit, this show is NOT
anyway near as good as "Dancing With The Stars" or "So You
Think You Can Dance".

I get a kick out of Bruno. I think he's funny. I only watched this
last one to see him plus see who got the least phone-in votes. I'll
wait for Dancing With The Stars to start up again and will skip this
Dance War series totally.

From the amount of traffic on this group, I'd have to agree with you. I, too, was surprised that Team Carrie Ann beat out Team Bruno, but perhaps the voting public doesn't like Bruno's attitude and the European manner, one might almost say arrogance with which he presents himself? Besides, I don't get the point of the show. Why get rid of one member each week? Surely it would have made more sense to award each team points or something similar. What, so at the end of the series, we might be faced with two teams of one performer? Where's the interest, and what's the point?

Article provided a bit of a 'wow' moment for me, but then so many
performance genres rely on 'who you know' for the major breaks.
Within the dance world, there may tend to be only 2-3 degrees of
separation among those who become known to the general public.
I have been enjoying this show. Good song and dance, good performances, as well as seeing the contestants recognized for their talent and performing abilities. Neal
"Lost" is my favorite TV show! I wish there hadn't been such long
"in-betweens" on the series. I can't wait 'til Jan. 31. I'll be so
happy it's back on air :)
Skee
As a result of lots of holiday shopping, I'm now undertaking a major
marathon of "Lost" seasons 1-3 so I'll be up to speed for the Jan 31
premiere of season 4. Somehow, that just felt more compelling than
tuning in to this show. I'm glad to hear I didn't really miss anything.
That's kind of my problem, too. I'm really not caring whether I see it or miss it or whatever. I got home late last night and only saw part and haven't even gone online to check the rest of it out.
Well; I don't know about anyone else, but I'm afraid that this hybrid show, which is better than Dancing With the Stars, but not as good as either So You Think You Can Dance or American Idol, didn't live up to the hype that went before it.
I think that each team that loses a member on a weekly basis will be devastated by the loss, and I'm not sure that we'll keep watching. So, in the end, one team could finish up with six and the other team will cold finish up with one? Gimme a break, please!
Having said that, I do think that Team Bruno won last night! His team was more alive, and seemed to me to express themselves better, both vocally and terpsichordically.
Nevertheless, the main question remains: Do I care???
Overall, I think Bruno's team did a better job of both
dancing and singing. The really nice thing about the show
is the grand prize. The remaining (8 or 10?) will form a
new dancing/singing group and will go on tour as the opening
act of a major talent. What a great opportunity for them!
I didn't know this before--just found out on the show's
page on the ABC site.

I agree. I like the show and ill watch but it's almost a little lame. And I'd
never compare it to so you think you can dance. It's nowhere near that level.
If I were the kids I'd be gratefil for the opportunity but if given a choice I'd
choose so you think you cqn dance to be on any day.

I disagree. I don't think Dance War is better than Dancing With The
Stars. I do think Dance War could be compared to So You Think You Can
Dance as they are similar in concept; but I do not think it can be
compared to Dancing With The Stars or American Idol which are totally
different themes.
I watched last night and gave all 5 of my phone-in votes to Team Bruno.
I'm taking this show on a week to week basis as I am not impressed with
its production at all.

Dancer, yes, singer, no. That is probably one reason why they started
by saying they were prepared to teach the participants to improve
dance moves, but not singing. (i.e, they were looking for "dancers
who can sing/have charisma" more than "singers who can dance" or any
other combination).
~~~~~~
As for my 'sources'... I'd tried to post a few days ago (it got lost)
that I was wondering whether the writers' strike was responsible for
nobody explaining the rules, etc during the premier episode.
Over the weekend, I read an article in my local TV guide that
mentioned Bruno's performing background and described the premise of
the show. It did note specific prizes for the dancers... which would
primarily consist of a performance gig for the winning TEAM. I
believe this is supposed to be a 6-8 week show? If so, and they are
losing one person each week, we should end up with some combination
of around six 'winning' dancers.
In my mind, voting for the winning 'team' on Dance Wars is almost
akin to voting for my favorite MTV video. My opinion is getting
logged, but I am not having any direct impact on any individual's
fate in the competition. I don't feel motivated to invest myself, as
I often do with SYTYCD or AI.
I feel a bit frustrated that if, for instance, Elizabeth has the
strongest audience support, her fan base can't be identified within
the overall voting results. She could still be the first to leave if
her team captain decides to drop her.
I agree that the program itself will be fine. I won't watch. But they won't miss me.
I have to disagree with your statements about the music industry. I think the slump is due to the quality of the music available rather than illegal downloads. The big sellers would not be big sellers if everyone was, as you say downloading illegally. They simply, or not so simply, produced a product people were willing to pay for.
I personally still purchase my music. It is true that for the most part I purchase individual songs from Itunes or yahoo music rather than entire Cds since, as I said before, most people do not produce a complete CD that is worth listening to. Those whom I know to consistently produce music I like, I will buy unheard.
As for concerts. I have been to 5 in the past two months. People whom I know to actually perform, not gasp around the stage or lipsync to a backing tape.
The audience is there. The product is not. And in case it matters, I am 58.
American Idol will be fine. The biggest cash cow is the program itself. The advertising revenues are enormous from the show and the show was always the biggest source of revenue. In general people do not buy CDs very much any more - they copy their friend's or download illegally. The whole record business is in a slump. The concert touring business is also in a slump. Ask yourself, when was the last time you went to a concert or bought a CD. How many CDs or concerts have you paid for in the last 12 months. I know I haven't bought either this year.
That is what the individual Idols are up against s well as all of the other Idols of the past. But the Idol franchise is doing very well. They can churn out a new Idol and throw out the past Idols to make way for the new ones -- it's just business. BTW, Former Idols are making money touring in small clubs, in Broadway plays, movies, TV appearances. They are doing OK. Even 200,000 sales are better than many established artists are selling.
