Hi,
I've been using my diy crt projector for about 6 months now.
I'm using a 42cm fresnel lens,first image mirror and have a silver
pvc screen painted white.
I find that watching some movies the quality of image is perfect and
it's just as good as in the movie theatre (eg Matrix
trilogy,Underworld,Terminator 1-3)whilst other movies and tv shows
the quality is pretty good and enjoyable to watch.
Music clips also look excellent.
Dark scenes in films that are lit with artificial light show up
better than daytime scenes shot in natural sunlight.
I wonder if crt tv's reduce their light emission with daytime scenes
or if it's something to do with the exposure at the filming source.
Has anyone else noticed this with their projectors?
Is it possible to buy a fresnel lens locally, and does the fresnel
lens have to be the same size as the screen on the tv that is being
used? Thanks.
Scott
Hey,
A local shop has a set of condenser lenses that are mounted together
convex to convex. They're pretty big, like 7inches diam, maybe more.
Just wondering if these condenser lenses from enlargers work and if
so, how well?
will they work together or will I need to split them?
Any help will be much appreciated
Andy
what alinement are we talking about here, i think there is 4 that come to mind?
tnx for the reply

Hi dear friend,
Polished land coated Multi element lenses might not have tolerated this Hard Nursing ! (might have lost original clarity and alignment )
"wiped the inside lense, waited for it all to dry, and then added the New coolent, put the housing all back togeather, nuts/bolts etc etc etc, no leaks, and reinstalled in to tv...(might have lost original clarity and alignment )
I did this to each CRT Red, Green, Blue, Blue was the worse, had a lot of bug's and crud in there look liked plack, had to realy give it a hard clean and wipe out and flushed it 3 or 4 times.... anyhow, reinstalled the crt's, and hooked up all the wires screwed everything back in place, all is good..." (might have lost original clarity and alignment)
turned the tv on, re focused the R, G, B by covering 2 crt's while working on the one so i can focus the single crt and then moving on to the next crt......... . did all 3 crt's...... all is good...

Hi,
I recently bought a Teac tv second hand to use for my projector and
needed to access its service settings to increase the brightness and
contrast.
I found this website and it may be of use to some people, as it has
the service manuals for most tv brands and the manuals should also
show you how to access the tv service settings.
http://www.eserviceinfo.com/equipment_type/TV_2.html
For your first question, secret, secret... Sorry can't answer this one. It took me a
lot of testing before I found the right formula. and that's partly what I'm selling.
Second question, I have no idea. I never compared them both. I never tried a triplet
because like I told you, to me it is to expensive and I do not have a flat CRT screen
and I didn't want to buy one just to find out.
Maybe some DIY members have more experience than I in triplets. They will be
more qualified to answer your second question
draculx2002 <draculx2002@...> a écrit :
I undertand that all lenses must be diaphramed except a triplet.
I ask first starting with a 115mm diameter positive meniscus how much diaphraming is aceptable before the 6 foot wide image is too dark to watch in a dark room?
Second lets assume the 115mm meniscus will get diaphramed to 90mm for a decent image. Does this mean your 100mm diameter triplet will be brighter then a 115mm meniscus?

Listen, everybody has his own experience. My experience was not good with
plano-convex lenses and with triplet lenses. Maybe others had better results,
with these kind of lenses and I'm fine with that.
You asked me for my opinion, I gave it to you.
Another thing that you did not understand, is that with a plano-convex lens, YOU MUST
ALSO DIAPHRAGM the projected image or else you will obtain blurred edges.
A glass lens is like the fresnel lens. There is no difference.
You do not need to diphragm for a triplet lens, but you should use a flat screen with the tripet.
Another thing is that a triplet costs around 100$. For this price, to me, it
is not interesting anymore to opt for tv projection but rather for DIY projectors.
The advantage
of fresnel lenses is that it covers the whole screen and that you will not be restricted exclusively of using 14" tv screens. You can use bigger tv sets which have more
ligh output lumens without any doubt.
I told you already is that to have brighter images it's not the lens that makes the difference.
Only 2 factors play the role in brighter image projection.
1.Constructing a highly reflective screen
2. Using a bigger CRT
Maybe others won't agree with that and that's fine with me once again.
I build over 75 prototypes and tested with a lot of lenses and consulted with a
optical engineer before I came up with a perfect projected image. I don't think
others did that.
My product is selling at ebay for the time being. Unfortunately it's in french.
Now if you
don't mind the language barrier, I could mail the product to you.
Do not buy from this link because shipping will not be the same according to where
you reside.
If you have more questions, don't hesitate.

Ok. Im confused why the files in this forum recomend fresnel lenses as last resort for choice if you are claiming better results then with PMN lens? Also many have acomplished very good results with PMN lens why arent you?
You mentioned that with the fresnel setup you require a diaphram but is this diaphram not cut more light then a 120mm diameter PMN lens? Is seems like you are saying using the fresnel method results in brighter image compared do pcx, triplet or PMN lenses. however if both use the same size diaphram i dont see the logic here.
So how does one get your fresnel building guide? How much is required to spend to build the box?

Ok. Im confused why the files in this forum recomend fresnel lenses as
last resort for choice if you are claiming better results then with
PMN lens?
Also many have acomplished very good results with PMN lens why arent you?
You mentioned that with the fresnel setup you require a diaphram but
is this diaphram not cut more light then a 120mm diameter PMN lens?
Is seems like you are saying using the fresnel method results in
brighter image compared do pcx, triplet or PMN lenses.
however if both use the same size diaphram i dont see the logic here.
So how does one get your fresnel building guide? How much is required
to spend to build the box?

Yep that's the price to pay! You will have less light hitting the lens at 550mm
than one which is at 330mm but do you want a tv projector that works or one
that doesn't.
The lights that are being diffused by the tv screen aren't all wanted
rays. The one that are NOT reaching the lens perpendicularly are the ones to
eliminate. These are the one causing image to blurr when they pass through
the lens.
That's why I use blockers inside my box and a filter apparatus system after
the lens.
If you to gain more light, you should focus on 2 key points. Your screen and
your tv. You should construct a high gain screen and the other factor is trying
to use bigger CRT screens (maybe a 17" or a 19"). Do not use LCD panels or
computer monitors, they have poor light
diffusion.

Also, I would say its fair to say a 500mm distance from the tv also has less then 1.5 times less light hitting the fresnel compared to a 330mm fresnel. I understand the fresnel is 40cm wide but since light is not parralel leaving the crt tube i am sure plenty of light is bypassing the fresnel at 500mm distance. I assume you have done this type of testing so please confirm or correct me.

Standard ebay fresnel lens are usually cheap plastic ones (pvc type)
It is impossible for you to obtain high quality projected images with these
kind of lenses.
A good high quality fresnel lens is acrylic and has high condensed concentric
rings. It has to be large enough to collect maximum light emission from your
tv screen.
Blurred corners is caused by poor quality fresnel lens and failing to restrain light
diffusion after the lens. This means you have to diaphragm to eliminate blurring.
This is done with a sort of apparatus. Basicly these are 2 holes, one after the other
and the second is smaller in diameter than the first. A little bit the same principle as
camera or a camecorder, you see the opening being reduced while focusing.
I did try the positive miniscus and did not
obtain good results. What's more, pm
are very heavy and they have very little diameter. The biggest I found was 12 cm
in diam. On the other hand, Fresnel lens just covers the whole screen.

Thanks for your quick reply. So are you saying that the reason standard ebay fresnels give blurred corners mostly because the FL is too short?
So I guess you are saying with this 500mm FL fresnel you are getting good focus all across
the screen of a curved tv? Can you confirm? Also have you compared your fresnel setup to a Positive Meniscus lens setup with at least 100mm diameter?

Thanks for your quick reply. So are you saying that the reason
standard ebay fresnels give blurred corners mostly because the FL is
too short?
So I guess you are saying with this 500mm FL fresnel you are getting
good focus all across the screen of a curved tv? Can you confirm?
Also have you compared your fresnel setup to a Positive Meniscus lens
setup with at least 100mm diameter?

My TV's screen is a normal curved screen not flat.
Actually it is better to have a curved screen than a flat one because it compensate
the negative distortion pillow caused by the lens image magnification.
High magnification causes edges to curve and that's why the curved tv screen will
compensate that.
Another factor to reduce curved edges is not to choose a fresnel lens which has
more than 1.5 X magnification. This is usually obtained with a fresnel lens that has
at least 500 mm of focal length.
I hope this has been helpful.

Remy,
Is the photo result on your website that of a normal curved 15 inch tv or from a flat screen? What are the results like with a normal curved screen tv?

Same question as here: http://www.lumenlab.com/forums/index.php?
showtopic=19997
If you don't know, I'm pretty sure the focal length of the fresnel (I
don't think it's usually used in the CRT projectors here, but I'm gonna
experiment and see how much improvement I get) is supposed to be
slightly less than the projection lens, so the focal point can be right
before it goes into the lens, and then all of the light emitted from
the CRT is projected.
The focal length is a bit short but the rest of the specs are ok.
