Hi and Merry Christmas to you,
Josette's music box is a lovely gift idea.
I hated that story line, too. What were they thinking? Laviatins?
What a terrific dad you are to take this time to go through all your tapes and mark them for her. She's a lucky girl.
Thank you for sharing and I wish more people would, it keeps DS alive. Jennifer

Anyone still out there?  Just a story to tell.  My 21 year old daughter called me Monday and asked if I had any tapes of Dark Shadows.  She had been in the Video Stores and they were selling the DVD"s for 50.00 a piece.  She had asked me about Josette's music box a few years ago, and they were playing the song in the store which got her to thinking that she'd like to watch the series.  And lucky for her, I had taped them off the Sci-Fi channel.  Unlucky for me, I had moved since the last time the show was on, and the tapes were just packed in some boxes.  So for the last four days, I have been literally sitting in front of the TV, with the VCR control in hand, and matching these things in chronological order.  75 tapes.  None of them marked.  And while it was great to see it all again, mostly in fast forward, even faster for the Laviatins( I hated that storyline)  I couldn't help thinking that my daughter will be 25 years old or more before she's done with this.   That's all,  I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas, or a Merry whatever your chosen faith celebrates at this time of year!

Not funny at all. RIP, DC.

'Winds of War,' 'Dark Shadows' Creator Dies

Dan Curtis was also behind 'Night Stalker' movies

By Valerie J. Nelson, Los Angeles Times

March 28 2006

Dark Shadows
'Dark Shadows'
Dan Curtis, whose battle to make two Emmy-winning World War II miniseries, "The Winds of War" and "War and Remembrance," lasted years longer than the war the epics were based on, has died. He was 78.

Curtis, who also created the daytime soap opera "Dark Shadows" in the 1960s that became a pop culture touchstone, died Monday of brain cancer at his Brentwood home, said his daughter, Cathy.

The landmark "War" miniseries were produced in the 1980s on a scale never before attempted on television. He served as executive producer, co-writer and director.

When "The Winds of War," a 16-hour, $40-million dramatization of the beginning of World War II, aired in February 1983, it was one of the most-watched miniseries of all time. ABC estimated that 140 million people tuned in to at least part of the series, which starred Robert Mitchum as Navy Capt. Victor "Pug" Henry.

"Wherever I turned, people were talking about it," Curtis told the Los Angeles Times soon after it aired. "No matter what I do the rest of my career, I can't imagine anything coming up to the high that was."

After spending more than four years on "The Winds of War," Curtis was adamantly opposed to adapting a second Herman Wouk novel that picked up the story of the war after Pearl Harbor. He relented when ABC promised a big budget and free rein to truthfully depict the horrors of the Holocaust.

When "War and Remembrance" began airing in 1988, the 30-hour, $104-million production was the biggest, longest and most expensive project in television history. It did not garner the ratings of its predecessor, but it was watched by about 40 million viewers. Though both miniseries received Emmys, the sequel brought Curtis his own, for outstanding miniseries.

Still, Curtis openly worried that he would be remembered for "Dark Shadows," his gothic horror daytime soap that ran from 1966-71 on ABC.

The idea for the show -- about an orphaned governess who goes to work for a wealthy family -- came to him in a dream that he shared with his wife when he woke up. She urged him to run with it.

At first, the campy series struggled in the ratings.

"My sister told him, 'make it scarier,' so he brought in the vampire Barnabas Collins, and the ratings took off," Cathy Curtis recalled.

In addition to the charismatic 175-year-old vampire, played by Jonathan Frid, other supernatural elements and characters were added that drew viewers.

A rabid fan base, fueled by cable reruns and video collections, still exists. By mining popular themes found in science fiction and horror literature, Curtis pushed the boundaries of daytime storytelling.

The show also introduced a number of future stars, including Kate Jackson, John Karlen and Roger Davis. Numerous up-and-comers such as Susan Sullivan, Marsha Mason and Harvey Keitel did guest shots.

Besides his "War" work, Curtis was proudest of two recent TV movies he directed. Last year, he made "Our Fathers," a dramatized account of the Catholic Church sex abuse scandal for Showtime. For CBS, he directed "Saving Milly," based on journalist Morton Kondracke's book about his wife's battle with Parkinson's disease.

In addition to his daughter Cathy and his stepbrother Myron Ballen, Curtis is survived by daughter Tracy. A daughter, Linda, died in 1975.

The blind Sam sits in a chair, staring at nothing.  Maggie returns home, babbling away, and he asks, “Maggie?  Where are you?”  She’s puzzled, then stunned when he tells her he can’t see. Maggie looks back at Sam and thinks to herself, "Sam MUST be blind, I bent over without any panties and he didn't even look my way! Hi Mark
Small world among groups isn't it? Some groups are a lot more serious :|
We have captioned many of the still images from DS that used to be posted
with episode summaries, almost like a slide show with new captions. People
were either entertained or appalled by them, but we let them decide.
We have always felt the writers were deliberately using words like Come!
very often.

We will have to send you some of our material that we posted.

Just wanted to say hello. I go through "Phases" of addiction to DS,
and right now I'm in the acute phase. One of the reasons I love the
show so much is that my mom, my sister and I used to watch it
together, and yes, we made SEVERE fun of the faux pas - which were so
plentiful. Mom passed away a couple of years ago and my sister and I
aren't so close anymore, so on one level, watching the reruns and
laughing myself into spasms is a way of feeling closer to them.

But even if it weren't, it's still just so much fun! I belong to some
of the serious groups too, but I've got a feeling I'm gonna LOVE this
one.

Take care, and don't slam the front doors or the walls will fall in!

Peace,
Mark

About the cast members:
Kathryn Leigh Scott - One of the Orginal Dark Shadows Cast
Characters: Maggie Evans, Josette Dupres, Kitty Soams, Maggie
Collins, Rachel Drummond. Original Playboy Bunny of the NY Bunny
Club. Creator/proprietor of Pomegranate Press.

Denise Nickerson - Nancy was one of the few actors to appear in both
films House of Dark Shadows (1970) and Night of Dark Shadows (1971).
In HODS she played Carolyn, a sexy vampire; and in NODS she and John
Karlen played husband and wife writing team Clair and Alex Jenkins.
Though Dark Shadows fans remember her fondly as the wide-eyed
innocent Amy Jennings (or perhaps the precocious Nora Collins),
Denise Nickerson played her most famous role-as a big human
blueberry, a year after leaving the soap's cast. Denise played
Violet Beauregarde in the classic film Willy Wonka and The Chocolate
Factory in 1971.

Diana Millay -Diana made TV history when her role as a Phoenix on
Dark Shadows pushed the soap opera in a decidedly supernatural
direction, which helped propel the show to cult-classic status.
Following her years on Dark Shadows, starring Joan Bennett, she was
a regular on the soap opera Secret Storm. Diana's motion pictures
credits include Paramount's Tarzan and the Great River in which she
played a modern, intellectual Jane, opposite sports hero and actor
Mike Henry as the lord of the apes; and Street of Sinners, as a
teenage badgirl.

Marie Wallace - Dark Shadows Characters: Eve, Jenny Collins, Megan
Todd

Nancy Barrett - Dark Shadows Characters: Carolyn Stoddard Hawkes,
Charity Trask, Millicent Collins, Melanie Collins, Leticia Faye,
Carolyn Loomis, Amanda Collins. Nancy was one of the few actors to
appear in both films House of Dark Shadows (1970) and Night of Dark
Shadows (1971). In HODS she played Carolyn, a sexy vampire; and in
NODS she and John Karlen played husband and wife writing team Clair
and Alex Jenkins.

It's episode #361. It aired on the 13th of November 1967 and is MPI tape
volume #027 (MP5027). By the way, you can get all this kind of info,
including short synopses, air dates, episode number, director, writer, cast,
MPI volume number, etc at http://www.darkshadows.com/cgi-bin/eg.pl. It's
really a great resource. I used it to help me label my video tapes with the
date each ep originally aired.

Just saw it! worth the price of admission.
She ran the gamut of emotions from alpha to omega in eight seconds!
A record even for her- and that includes the hands flitting across
the face, Priceless. It should be a yearly Halloween Special.

Hahaha! Yes! It was some sort of nicotine-soaked Lucy-esque "Wahhhh!"
I find myself laughing at that too.
She had such a strange way of being phyisically unselfconcious in a
very self-concious way (She's an enigma wrapped in a cloud of
cigarette smoke). She always came across like a half-tanked bridge
party participant- so unaware of the technicalities of acting.

It's been awhile since the show has been on.  The Sci-Fi channel actually canceled it with 17 or 18 episodes to go without any warning.  Now I'm all bummed because I can't really answer you, and I'm missing the show again.  I go to the top of my stairs hoping that there is a portal into the past so I can watch them over again, but it's just a regular wall and I keep smashing my nose.

Watching earlier eps, right after Julia and Barnabas kill Dr. Woodard.

Julia imagines Dr. Woodard's ghost behind her.
She screams, Victoria rushes in;

"Who wasn't there?" she asks,

"No one was there." Julia answers.

Today I watched the episodes where Barnabas first becomes a vampire,
I can't tell if his line just went up, or it was a stroke of genius,
being that he was so new to the vampire game...

He tells his faithful handyman, as he ducks into his secret crypt;
"Don't let anyone in here! If Anyone tries to come in, tell them
I'm...-

Don't let them come in!"

Cigarettes in front of oxygen!! much less on TV! Another interesting episode
going up in flames.

I don't remember the donut episode; however, I do remember the kitchen
scenes in Collinwood. It was unfortunate there were so few.

Was watching the episode where Willie is laying in the oxygen tent,
and Doctor Hoffman is there to make sure he doesn't rat on Barnabas
for kidnapping Maggie-
She just lights up a cigarette in the hospital room and puffs right
in the face of Doctor Woodard.
I wasn't aware of how things had changed about cigarettes on tv until
I started re-watching this show.

My husband came rushing home yesterday with the 1795 dvd set.
I like how the servants just come right out and talk to their
superiors.

I forgot her 1795 alias name, but Doctor Hoffman was reading her
tarot cards, (The 1928 Waite deck, at that, with matching fashionable
fan!)
amd proclaimed that someone was 'trying to change the oder of the
house..."

As I recall, this era was my favorite part of the soap when I was a
kid- I always hating having to be the Willie Loomis to my brother's
Barnabus.

Thank you all for the welcome.
As kids, we took it as serious as judges, but my dad would turn red
from laughing. Now I know why.

I used the library scheme to get ahold of the dvds.
Libraries are allotted so many dollars a year to get books, dvd,
etc., but librarians have told me that they would love for people to
request things, because they run out of ideas of what to buy, with
the following exception; They were prefer the item requested at least
cost more than the cost of going through the forms- so that 2.95
paperback would be looked down on, but a $60.00 set of dvds is
welcomed.
Also, if they don't spend the money that's allotted, it might get
taken away, so they would prefer the higher priced items to on their
shelves. The person requesting the items is the first on the reserve
list at my library, and I suspect it's pretty much the same allover.
So I did my bit to help the local library, and filled out the request
form with the email address of the Dark Shadows dvd sets.
What an exhausting post.
I must get a brandy so that I may lurk around the house in a robe, as
long as I don't go to sleep. No, even at 3AM, it's business as usual,
calling people over to the house, finding children running amok, etc.

refuse to run my beloved DS on any channel right now, so I'm still
waiting to get the episodes on DVD.

What a wonderful memory to have and what a great dad to sit down with his
children and share this quiet time with you all. Now you can continue this
memory that is obviously warm and filled with love.

Thank you for sharing.

Just got a DVD player and had to reveal to my husband a deep dark
mysterious mystery about my family and me...me and my family...
my Incestors.

I can't tell you about it right now. Never mind that,

(Looks away at telepromptor)

But I will tell you this-

My whole family used to watch Dark Shadows. We'd run from the bus
stop to be on the couch in time. My dad would just be coming in from
work, and would watch it with us.
I got as many as the Dark Shadows dvd's I could get my hands on at
one time and had my husband sit and watch them with me, to see what
the big deal was.

Would you like me to give you a sedative? I have just bottles and
bottles of them here in my medical bag, and in the pockets of my big
ugly Minnasota Woolens coat that I always wear.
