Just got a DVD player and had to reveal to my husband a deep dark
mysterious mystery about my family and me...me and my family...
my Incestors.

I can't tell you about it right now. Never mind that,

(Looks away at telepromptor)

But I will tell you this-

My whole family used to watch Dark Shadows. We'd run from the bus
stop to be on the couch in time. My dad would just be coming in from
work, and would watch it with us.
I got as many as the Dark Shadows dvd's I could get my hands on at
one time and had my husband sit and watch them with me, to see what
the big deal was.

Would you like me to give you a sedative? I have just bottles and
bottles of them here in my medical bag, and in the pockets of my big
ugly Minnasota Woolens coat that I always wear.

Message: Here's an interview w/ the actor who played Barnabas in the WB's DS pilot. He talks about the pilot not getting picked up, saying that the whole experience was very political. There's a ref to some WB bigwig saying that nothing in the pilot was salvagable. Consider that these people are airing the universally panned show "The Mountain," however, when evaluating that statement. I've also read an online review of the pilot (not on a DS site, btw, but on a horror-fan site) that said that overall it was good, although the ending ended up silly and needed to be reworked. Maybe we were lucky that the WB didn't get a chance to ruin the show, all things considered.

Message: Here's a story about the guy who played Joe Haskell in the DS pilot. It makes a mention that the series was "expensive," perhaps suggesting why it wasn't picked up. I guess they'd prefer low-brow Jeff Foxworthy "comedy". Oh, well.

___ ___

For years and years they told me,
Be careful of your breasts.
Don't ever squeeze or bruise them.
And give them monthly tests.

So I heeded all their warnings,
And protected them by law.
Guarded them very carefully,
And I always wore my bra.

After 30 years of astute care,
My gyno, Dr. Pruitt,
Said I should get a Mammogram
"O.K," I said, "let's do it."

"Stand up here real close" she said,
(She got my boob in line),
"And tell me when it hurts," she said,
"Ah yes! Right there, that's fine."

She stepped upon a pedal,
I could not believe my eyes!
A plastic plate came slamming down,
My hooter's in a vise!

My skin was stretched and mangled,
From underneath my chin.
My poor boob was being squashed,
To Swedish Pancake thin.

Excruciating pain I felt,
Within it's vise-like grip.
A prisoner in this vicious thing,
My poor defenseless tit!

"Take a deep breath" she said to me,
Who does she think she's kidding?!?
My chest is mashed in her machine,
And woozy I am getting.

"There, that's good," I heard her say,
(The room was slowly swaying.)
"Now, let's have a go at the other one."
Have mercy, I was praying.

It squeezed me from both up and down,
It squeezed me from both sides.
I'll bet SHE'S never had this done,
To HER tender little hide.

Next time that they make me do this,
I will request a blindfold.
I have no wish to see again,
My knockers getting steam rolled.

If I had no problem when I came in,
I surely have one now.
If there had been a cyst in there,
It would have gone "ker-pow!"

This machine was created by a man,
Of this, I have no doubt.
I'd like to stick his balls in there,
And see how THEY come out!

It seems to me that the airways, that are supposed to be owned by "the people" (that would be us) are trying to control us ala 1984.  Disney Corp is censoring what the public can see; programs tied into merchandise for the immature mind to spend spend spend on items they do not need; there is a lot more to life than shopping at K-Mart.

That figures.  I was looking fforward to seeing how they were going to "improve" over the old show.  Maybe Fox will pick it up.  Oh well, they might have come to their senses and decided that messing with a classic was suicide!  I was also hoping that the original stars would guest star on episodes.  We can only hope.

Yeah, that really is amazing. He was an older guy & not what would be considered hot by classic standards, but I guess he had a way about him--plus the whole sexual metaphor of the vampire figure, in general. I think it's hilarious that he used to get semi-nude photos from women when you consider that (according to many) JF is gay. From what I read about him, though, he thought it was ridiculous that Barnabas was always chasing the hot young things. He personally thought Barnabas & Julia belonged together.

I don't have a problem with a black sheriff or even an Asian Julia but your point about Hoffman being a Germanic/Jewish name is well taken. I wonder if they will try to explain that in some way.

I'm actually glad that they're getting a bit more culturally diverse for the new show. Looking back through the prism of today's attitudes, Collinsport circa 1966 is glaringly white. Now, that may actually have been a realistic portrayal of a small Maine fishing village, but it seems odd by today's standards.
I was also wondering if they would describe how Dr. "Hoffman" turned out to be an Asian woman--maybe multi-ethnic?

New cast info courtesy of thefutoncritic.com (see

http://www.thefutoncritic.com/cgi/gofuton.cgi?action=newswire&id=6541):

Michael D. Roberts has been cast to play the new Sheriff George Patterson. The last thing he did on TV was The District. We seem to be getting a slightly more multi-cultural cast this time around; Roberts is African-American, which is less unsettling to me than an Asian Julia Hoffman. I have absolutely no problem w/ a multi-cultural cast, but it seems odd to have cast an Asian to play a woman w/ a Germanic/Jewish surname. Sheriff Patterson, on the other hand, is less race-/nationality-specific.

Anyway, Roberts seems to be one of the few actors on the new show who might actually have been born before classic DS went off the air. (Not that I'm being a snob. Hell, I wasn't born until the show had been off the air for 4 months.) They're really going w/ a youth-centered (& superficially attractive) emphasis in the casting this time around. I know all of the young women (& most of the young men) on classic DS were beautiful, but Grayson & JF were not classically beautiful or young. It might draw in new fans, but I doubt what they're doing will resonate w/ classic DS fans. Classic DS was so much better for the fact that everyone on the show wasn't classically beautiful--attractive, but not classically stunning. My husband was saying last night that it made it creepier that JF as Barnabas could enforce his will on these hot young things w/o being a drop-dead gorgeous young stud of a vampire. He might be right there.

Back to the main point, if you're interested in finding out a bit more about Roberts, I found a couple of links you might want to check out:

I was just looking through info on the new cast, and I recognized the kid who is going to play David from something in which you actually saw his face (as opposed to Finding Nemo, which just used his voice). I don't know how many of you were fans of the show Freaks & Geeks (it's one of my all-time favorites shows, any genre, any year, any network), but he was on the episode "Chokin' & Tokin'". He played the little kid who Lindsay had to babysit after her first (very bad) experience w/ pot. He really is a good actor--very creepy in that ep of FnG. I do feel that they'll make David a lot creepier than he was in classic DS, as Jen suggested a couple of days ago.

After posting the links for Alec Newman, I decided to go ahead & find links for all the other actors & post those, as well. I couldn't find sites for Jessica Chastain, who is playing Carolyn, but I found at least a couple for each of the other actors.  So, here ya go:

Ivana Milicevic (Angelique): [If you were a fan of Seinfeld, you might remember her as Patty, the wife of Milosh, the tennis "pro" who couldn't play tennis. In the episode, Jerry threw a tennis match against Milosh so that Milosh could win his wife's devotion.]

Hey, all!
If anyone's interested in learning a bit more about the "new" Barnabas, here's a couple of links w/ a short bios &/or photos. The guy is Scottish, so at least we'll get a British Isles accent for Barnabas this time (I always had a bit of a problem w/ no one realizing that Barnabas claimed to be from England, but didn't speak like a Brit)...but Scottish? If you watch Angel, you might recognize him as Drogyn, the long-haired guy who guarded the "Deeper Well" in the episode "A Hole In the World" (the ep in which Fred died). I'm glad they're going w/ a younger Barnabas. As much as I love JF, I always had a problem w/ this older man getting all those sweet young things.
  Anyway, here are the links:

I know what you mean. Good TV writing is hard to come by--and if a writer with an original idea comes along, you can be damned sure their work won't be around for long. Hell, you're lucky if you get two or three episodes of a good series even aired before the networks yank 'em.

The following info is from thefutoncritic.com, specifically from the link below. There's a ton more info at this site about DS & all pilots in production. (It's a great site if you're interested in what the networks are planning & how they go about planning, etc.)

I thought you'd all like to know who's working on the pilot, so here goes:

The creative team--
Dan Curtis, John Wells (of ER, The West Wing, Third Watch), Mark Verheiden (Smallville); the director of the pilot is P.J. Hogan (My Best Friend's Wedding), who replaced a director who used to work on The X-Files (who left due to scheduling conflicts w/ a movie he's making).

The cast [I'll be honest here, I've never heard of any of these people or seen any of their previous projects]--
Marley Shelton  (Uptown Girl) [This might be the new Victoria Winters, but I'll have to  check again.]
Ivana Milicevic (The Mind of the Married Man)  [I believe this is the new Angelique.]
  Alec Newman (Dune)
  Jessica Chastain (ER)
  Martin Donovan (Traffic)
  Matt Czuchry (Hack)
  Alexander Gould (Finding Nemo)
Blair Brown (Dogville)  [I take that back, I have heard of Blair Brown. I'm just not that familiar.]
Alexis Thorpe (Days of Our Lives)
Jenna Dewan (The Hot Chick) [I am very proud to say that I never, ever laid eyes on this movie & never, ever plan to do so. Ugh! Let's hope it's not representative of this one's talent level.]
Jason Shaw (Charmed) [I run screaming from the room when this show dares appear on my TV. LOL]
  Kelly Hu (X2: X-Men United)

Anyway, thems the cast-n-crew! I'll check again, because I know the site noted which actor is playing Barnabas & some of the other characters. That info just wasn't at the particular page that the link above leads to.

Kim

Because I can't ever do anything the easy way, I didn't check to see which cast member was playing which part before I sent the previous post. Anyway, I checked out the site again (all news about the show can be found by going to http://www.thefutoncritic.com/cgi/gofuton.cgi?action=showatch&id=dark_shadows )and found out who is playing whom. Here y'all go:

Marley Shelton:  Victoria Winters
Ivana Milicevic:  Angelique
Alec Newman:  Barnabas
Jessica Chastain:  Carolyn
Martin Donovan:  Roger
Matt Czuchry:  Willie Loomis
Alexander Gould:  David
Blair Brown:  Liz
Alexis Thorpe:  Kelly Greer (a new character created for the update)
Jenna Dewan:  Sophia (Who the hell is this?! Anyone know? Could they mean Maggie Evans?)
Jason Shaw:  Joe Haskell
Kelly Hu:  Julia Hoffman

Hope you find this endlessly fascinating & edifying!

I definitely hope we get new story lines, not just retread the old show. If they go the way of Buffy & Angel, we might still get some soap in the mix. Those shows are/were more action-oriented, but they definitely are character-driven stories, too.
I'm not sure about how I feel about them bringing Victoria Winters back, though. She was never one of my favorite characters, but she's on the list of characters (tho' I didn't see Maggie, which was interesting).

Hello everyone,
