Welcome also from the Vancouver, BC contingent of Code7R! :)

This bit of news about Michael O'Hare being ill is news to me too. Need

There was some mention of Mr. O'Hare being ill over at IMDB but
someone there had seen him on the stage in NY last year but nothing
more recent that I can find.

Hello everyone! I am a new member here and just thought I would check in and tell you a little bit about myself.

I am an original B5 fan and fondly remember being glued to the tube every week to find out what Joe had in store for our heroes. What a great trip! But real life kind of took over after that and I lost touch with the B5 universe for a few years. In fact, I didn't even know until last week that Andreas Katsulas had died! That was a real shocker and I felt very saddened.

You see, a few weeks ago I found some of my old B5 fanfic that I had written and started remembering why I had written it in the first place and all of a sudden I got the B5 bug again. Sooooo, I bought Season 1 on DVD, started watching, and have been falling in love all over again.

I know this list is a little slow right now, but that's okay because at the moment I'm a graduate student (make that a middle-aged graduate student) who also has to earn a living, so there isn't much free time. Still, I would enjoy some B5 conversation once in awhile and would also like to catch up with any news. I know that Rick Biggs and Tim Chaote both passed away (very great tragedies!) and I know that Jerry Doyle has a politically- oriented talk radio show (which unfortunately I can't get where I live).

Does anybody know what the others are up to? Also, I heard a rumor that Michael O'Hare is very ill. Does anyone know about that?

Thanks for listening!

This article is SOOOO true.  Although, I can proudly say, I NEVER got into the Star Wars trap.  I never thought the acting was any good, the idea behind it was good, just never caught my attention. Probably due to the acting    It is SO sad that B5 did not receive more attention than it did, J.Michael is a Much better writer than Lucus is/was.  I agree, Crusade started slow, but had so much potential.  To bad the Networks were so impatient!   Could you imagine seeing a Shadow - Vorlon battle on the big screen.  The ships, characters, idea, writing, acting in the B5 world will never be surpassed.  I would love to be made wrong on this, but I dont think I will.  Now that G'Kar and Dr. Franklin have gone beyond the Rim, I don't think J. Michael has any plans on looking into the big screen.  Hopefully I am wrong, I think there are more B5 fans that would go see a B5 movie on the big screen that they think.  But I think we need to except the fact the he has closed the chapter on B5.  I hope I am wrong, even a Telepath war movie would be cool.  We can only hope!!!

Anyways, I am done venting.  Thanks

I tend to agree about wasting too much effort on the last three Star Wars movies.  I think those who loved the original three tried to find redeeming features in the new movies after they realized these movies could never recapture what made the original trio so special.  (OK, Star Wars and the Empire Strikes Back.  Return of the Jedi was already on the slippery slope that ended with Revenge of the Sith - I think that's the title.)

As for B5, there were various reasons why it never was the next big thing, chief of which - imo - was the writing in the last season and in Crusade.  The other main reasons were - imo - the lack of a settled schedule and network, and the lack of ratings in the beginning.  Everyone seems to forget that Trek was not a success in its original run.  But the network and the producers gave it a chance - for three seasons at least - to find its audience.  B5 was never given a chance.

Farscape and Firefly were both too different for general success.  Perhaps, had Sci Fi been able to get that last season, Farscape might have escaped cult status.  But I doubt it.  Ben Browder and Claudia Black, as much as I love them both, didn't stand out enough to connect with the general viewing public.

The only successful sci fi franchise in terms of ratings and longevity is Stargate.  And that's because it never took itself seriously.  It was all a big joke and the audience was in on it.

Battlestar Galactica had the good fortune to come along when the audience - and the critics - were ready for another intelligent, thought provoking sci fi series.  As good as the writing and acting is, I wonder if it would have succeeded during Star Wars' heyday.

Shoulda Been Bigger: How Star Wars Killed Babylon 5 The 90s were a boon for science fiction. Star Trek was still in its heyday and more Star Wars was on the way. On television, you could turn the dial anywhere at almost any time of the day and run into someone racing through outer space or warping back in time. Syndication brought science fiction into homes and onto millions of screens, some shows like Quantum Leap critically acclaimed, others like Time Traxx were simply guilty pleasures. The 70s and 80s made Star Trek and Star Wars into mega-franchises, the next big thing in sci-fi was there somewhere ready and waiting in the 90s.

By any measure, the top contender to be the next geek attention getter should have been Babylon 5. On television, it was one of the most groundbreaking, critically acclaimed science fiction series of all time. All that linear storytelling you love on shows like Lost and Battlestar Galactica? B5 was doing it back in 1993. Computerized special effects? Babylon 5 took them off the big screen and brought them to television on a scale never before seen. Compelling characters, gripping, continuous storylines with complex plots; Babylon 5 was ahead of its time and perhaps, poised for a leap into history and the big screen.

In January of 1999, Babylon 5 left the airwaves. Not cancelled, simply completed. The show had done what its creator J. Michael Straczynski set out to do. The future seemed bright for further endeavors, but Babylon 5 inexplicably went nowhere. The spin-off show Crusade was quickly cancelled before it had a chance to catch on. Talk of a movie lingered for years, but never seemed to go anywhere. Eventually, people somehow seemed to forget. Since then the best its brilliant creator, JMS, has been able to manage are a few bonus direct to DVD episodes, done more out of love than profit making potential. Babylon 5 shoulda been bigger. Maybe it would have been bigger, if not for a little something called20Star Wars.

In 1999 George Lucas brought Star Wars back into the lives of science fiction geeks everywhere. As Babylon 5 was completing what should have been its triumphant run on television, its primary audience was focused almost entirely on lightsabers. In 1999 geeks stopped looking towards the future, stopped hoping for the next big thing, and started looking back as George Lucas viciously mined his own franchise’s past for fat nerd cash. Let’s face it, even the most hardcore sci-fi lover only has so much attention to spare. In 1999 the outer space nerd’s attention became firmly fixed on a galaxy far far away… and stayed=2 0there.

Over the next few years, more brilliant ideas would arrive… and fail in the Star Wars’ shadow. Farscape blew the minds of the few who bothered to see it, before being quietly cancelled and forgotten by all but the most hardcore fans. Firefly and then its subsequent movie Serenity arrived, wowed critics, and then ultimately failed to become the epic franchise it probably should have been. But Star Wars, despite all the disappointment, despite all the irritation George Lucas caused his fans, continued on. Your attention, my attention, our collective sci-fi attention was fixed there.

This morning, on the eve of Star Wars: The Clone Wars’s epic critical and financial flop, I think a lot of Star Wars geeks are waking up and wondering what the hell they’ve been doing for the past 9 or 10 years. Some are responding to Clone Wars with anger, some are taking it as a sort of personal affront. Others are simply giving up. Instead, maybe we should all look around and consider the things we’ve missed out on, by giving so much of our time to a franchise, an idea, that was going absolutely nowhere. Being a science fiction fan is supposed to be about looking towards the future. For the past decade or so, science fiction has been mired in an un rewarding past.

We’ve been living on Star Wars nostalgia, a contact high leftover from great movies we saw as kids, movies which no matter how much CGI George Lucas uses, will never be as good again. I’m speaking as a fellow geek here, I’m just as guilty as everyone else. Did I really need two Yoda action figures? Sitting here now in a post-Clone Wars world I have to admit, probably not. The prequels had their moments, but take a second to consider that maybe, just maybe we gave them too much of our attention. Think of all the things we’ve missed, by dressing up as Jedi and swinging around our plastic lightsabers. Maybe we should have dressed up as G’Kar or Londo instead. Babylon 5 shoulda been bigger, but we went with Jar Jar.

Yes I have a new fan, my wife. I bought the complete series and we’ve been watching it. She just couldn’t get into the show in a weekly format, but when she sits down and watches several episodes she get it.

At first, I didn't like Sheridan at all. He seemed like a usurper
but he grew on me as time went on. When I look back, Michael O'Hare
was a bit stiff at the first of Season 1 but he improved as time
went on. Boxleitner seemed to fall into his role easily.

And welcome to the B5 world. I consider it the best show *ever* on
television. I came to it late also, when the Sci fi channel showed
it.

I did like Michael O'Hare, he was a tad unfortunate I think in that
MJS hadnt quite found the right formula when doing season 1, much of
the season where 1 off stories and filler stories, and the series
didnt really hit its stride until the latter part of season 1 and
the beggining of season 2.

But I just loved BB as Captain John Sheridan, and almost every scene
with Andreas Katsulas and Peter Jurassik those guys are (Or where in
Andreas's case) fantastic actors.

Was sooooooo much more involving Trek, I hope we do see some more B5
in some shape or form, I hear MJS is working on a B5 graphic novel,
are the comics any good does anyone know?

Oooh Just heard Bruce Boxleitners been cast in Heroes season 3! He
was my favourite actor from B5, what did you all think when he was
brought in to replace Michael O'Hare? (I know that must be a
reeeeeeeeeeeally old discussion point but I'm all shiny and new

All three trilogies are pretty good. Also The Sahdow Within and To
Dream in the City Of Sorrows are also quite good.

JMS had categorically stated Jeanne Cavelos' "The Shadow Within" and
Kathryn Drennan's "To Dream In The City of Shadows" are 99.9% canon when
they were first published over 10 years ago. They're both good reads as
they set up the back story for Morden, John and Anna Sheridan in the
former, and those of Marcus Cole and Jeffery Sinclair in the latter.

Except for the trilogies (Psi Corps, Centauri, Technomages), the only B5
books worth reading are To Dream in the City of Sorrows and the one
about Anna (I can't remember the name of it right now. The rest are
mostly garbage.

Hi all

I have been reading the Babylon 5 books.

I don't mind most of them but I am in the middle of Clark's Law I am not too
sure about it.

Has anyone else read the books and what do they think?

Cheers
