An "Insider" Look at Survivor: Exile Island, The Finale: Two Out of   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #25 of 36 |

CBS.com saves the best for last, as this finale version of Survivor Insider is undoubtedly the most interesting of the season. Of course, it doesn't hurt that it features the most dynamic personalities, Terry and Cirie. Find out what both of them think of their experience, as well as Mike's thoughts on the finale, inside!

Well, I was wrong about the outcome, but I would have been perfectly fine with it had I predicted the final two right – Terry and Danielle. No, instead, while everyone is cheering and exclaiming, "At least Danielle didn't win!" I'm over in the corner with my hand up, saying, "Yes, but Aras did." I can deal with lazy (Danielle) and arrogant (Terry), but what I can't deal with is disrespectful and hypocritical.

Game or no, with one threat, Aras proved that he was in it for nothing but the money. Which is fine – which is how it should be! But don't tell me you want to play the game with integrity and threaten your way into the final two. He even went so far as to try and say he ONLY jumped off because she gave him the nod. Sure. He looked for the nod because he knew he was screwed. So I just can't be happy about his victory in any sense. Except maybe that it wasn't Courtney.

One person I am deliriously happy for is Cirie. Not only for her well-earned fame (and let's hope they don't squander it like they did Rupert's, although I have the distinct feeling that was Rupert's doing) but that America agreed with me and voted her the Yukon. This whole infuriating season was almost made worthwhile in that one moment. Which leads us nicely to…

Cirie's Final Words: Her time there is up, she lasted 36 days, FAR beyond her expectations, she had a great experience, met interesting people, hopefully made friends, she's done some cool things like flying on a helicopter and riding on a yacht. She challenged herself in ways (does the "holds up her hands and gasps" thing), she's speechless. Her face is one of absolute wonderment and joy.

She hopes her family is proud (I would venture a guess that they are), sorry guys, she says she let them down, she couldn't keep the fire going. Geez, she lasts that long and she's apologizing. Why DON'T I love Cirie, you know? This has been the hardest thing she ever had to do in her life. And then she laughs that laugh, which, coming after that statement, pretty much sums up my feelings for Cirie right there.

For people like her out there, don't listen to the self doubt, don't listen to the underestimators, just try it, you never know what might happen. Look at her. Next to having kids, this has been the best thing she's ever done. The hardest thing, but the best. She's so thankful for the opportunity. She can barely keep it together. Just get off the couch, she says. Don't let life pass you by because you're on the couch. If she can do it, so can you.

Cirie on day one was so lost, she was like a newborn baby. She needed directions from the Lumberjack Lady (ironic, no?), she couldn't even find the water, and she had a map! She had no idea where to start, thankfully there were other people around. Otherwise, she would have died. Gradually, she watched and learned – and points out that she should have watched the fire more. She went from zero to my hero. Actually, she said she went from zero to being able to catch a fish and find other ways to get water, which she really doesn't recommend.

She overcame a lot of her fears. Dark woods, 36 days ago, would have had her pulling hairs out. Now she's used to nature. Well, she stops herself, she's not really used to nature because she still doesn't like the bugs. Hey, who does? BUT, she can be outside in the dark and not scream out loud, how about that?

Terry. Terry, Terry, Terry. No hard feelings, but she thinks there is a way to go about things with a little more tact and a little more sensitivity to other people's thoughts, and a little less… just stop thinking about yourself so much. She knows he's military and is used to being in charge. Be in charge of Terry, not other adult people, and put yourself in their shoes before you scold 35-year old adults. Or any adults for that matter.

She wishes them all luck, Aras especially. This was far beyond anything she expected. She watches the show, she knew the show. Not a chance. She was so ill-prepared. She doesn't think you can prepare. You may be athletic or (laughing) be able to start a fire, but there's no way to prepare for all the aspects. It is impossible. It's way past what she expected. She thought on day 15, a producer might bring out a banana and a coke or something. There's no help! It's crazy. It's the best thing that she's ever done in her life, and she's lasted 36 days!

All Cirie fans (and I know there are a lot of you out there) need to go watch this clip. And people who can't understand why people like me are smitten, go watch this clip.

Cirie, the Day After: She knew it was hard, watching it from home, but you just can't understand until you're here. I make fun of others for saying this, but I'll allow it from Cirie. It seems like a show, but when you live here, it's a rude awakening. When she realized that she probably should have done a little research, she thought, "uh-oh."

Her best time was when HB came and he got to see what she went through. The fact that she knew what to do and could show him made it her best time. Her lowest point was when she didn't get the family video. You mean the one Aras lost because he kept kicking out the flags? Prior to that challenge, she was feeling defeated and she just needed a boost. Something from the family would have been great, and lo and behold, that was the reward. And she didn't get it.

What made losing that reward bearable is when they came back, it was just Danielle, Shane, and herself. Shane had a little "scrotum problem." Thank God you can pause these videos, I just lost it. The way Shane went about it was so funny that she just kind of forgot about losing the reward. That lifted her spirits a little.

Referring to the fire-building tiebreaker, she thinks that when she's under pressure, she panics. She knew what to do and for some reason, she just didn't do it! She knew that she had to build a little teepee and let air get underneath the fire, but she just panicked under the pressure. She may have looked calm, but she was going crazy inside. "Shoulda, coulda, woulda, but it was too late."

Hopefully, she won't be as fearful of the unknown from now on. That's what kept her on the couch. One, she doubted herself, two, she was scared of everything. She was petrified at every challenge, and everyone would go up to her and try to comfort her. She wouldn't even know what the challenge is, just that there is a challenge and she may not be able to do it. Then when she would see the challenge, she'd think she couldn't do it. Hopefully that won't be a part of her life anymore, since she's overcome so much. Hopefully, she says, she won't be such a scaredy cat anymore.

Wall to Wall: Reward challenge. Since there was no indecisive woman to bully, Aras came in second. As usual.

Jeff Probst Interviews Terry: After reward, Jeff leads Terry to his table and offers to stay around and keep him company. Cool.

As Terry digs in to what, as he said, seems like a paltry plate of food, Jeff asks if he truly realizes what a social game this is. As a bug crawls on his chicken, Terry says he didn't mean to stick his foot in his mouth even though his wife predicted it. Does he think it will cost him? He thinks he has four votes: Austin, Sally, Shane, and Courtney. We know for a fact that the first three would have, and probably Courtney too. But what's interesting here is, as I thought, Terry doesn't care about friendships anymore.

Is he interested in listening to what people say about him? He's not perfect. It's a journey, and he's excited to make it to the final three. It's righteous. Is there anything he's most proud of? Winning challenges, as the old dude, and the survival part. He needs to work on the outwit part. Heh.

Last question, has he been able to get away from the game and look at his life in perspective? Being away makes you fonder, he can't wait to be home and see his kids. It's not any fun to be away from them. With that, Jeff lets him eat as Terry voiceovers that he hopes the "full on nutrition feast" gives him an advantage.

Balance of Power: Immunity challenge – and actually a cute title for a change. I've read all the morons on all the message boards complain that this challenge was unfairly slated to Danielle, because it was obviously custom-made for a smaller woman, not a big guy. What idiots tend to forget is that the challenges are set up beforehand. And that's not even mentioning the dozens of past challenges that seem to be unfairly stacked AGAINST Danielle. But then, "logic" and "message board" doesn't match.

Danielle Picks Her Partner: Danielle casts her vote for the final evictee. She votes for Terri, obviously not having figured out yet that Terry is male. She also pauses more AFTER writing the name down than before, as the episode would have you believe. "Terry, {whine, stomp foot (no, really)} this is the most difficult decision I've ever had to make. You're an awesome guy, I'm really going to miss you, and a great competitor. Sorry, don't hate me."

Terry's Final Words: He came into the game wanting to play it within my moral confines, to give and receive trust with a shake of a hand and a look in the eye, and not to lie to anybody. Except for a couple of white lies and lies of omission, like about his Navy career, he succeeded in all three of those. Not counting Ruth-Marie and Dan, of course, who you backstabbed and lied to. He's very happy about that. He was dealt a certain type of game to play, and he played the game he was dealt. It's been a hell of a journey, and he thanks Survivor for giving him the chance.

He realized tonight that the hidden immunity idol (which he then holds up to the camera – that's one HELL of a souvenir) along with the five immunity necklaces kept him out of the fire. In fact, he believes the only vote he ever received at Tribal Council was the one that just kicked him out. I believe he's right, although I'm far too lazy to look. The idol caused a lot of angst and pressure, even when he was the last La Mina. It took a lot of pressure off of every immunity challenge.

His biggest mistake was not winning the final four immunity challenges. He made two mistakes during that challenge and it cost him. When you play against someone like Aras, you can't make mistakes. He made two and it cost him. With that, he was unable to bring the idol into play to help Danielle, and had he given her the idol then, she would have definitely kept him. Not keeping the game in his own hands is what got him. He knew he was in to the three, but had he been able to use the idol strategically, it would have put him in the driver's seat for the finals.

Nothing to say to Danielle and Aras, she had a tough choice to make and he's not sure he would have wanted to be in her shoes. Personally, he thinks she made the wrong choice but she'll see tomorrow night. They're great competitors and great people. Heck of a journey, not bad for a 46-year old guy. He hopes he made his family proud and sure misses them. He already promised Cirie he'd work on his weaknesses and now he's promising us as well. Terry Dietz is not a perfect guy.

Terry, the Day After: He's feeling great. It was not fun to leave the game, but it was great seeing his friends, getting things to eat, talking about normal things outside the game, finding out about current events, sports, politics. Got some food, took a walk on the beach, it was like a vacation. He's been thinking about the "outwit" part since right before the merge, and it was nice not to have to think about it. He can't wait to see his wife and kids.

He's patient with his kids, but he's going to get real patient. His daughter is ten, about to become a teenager (whoo, can I relate), it's coming time for him to just listen. When daddy thinks he needs to put in his two cents, maybe he should just take those two cents, put them in the bank, and listen. He's going to try to perceive people better.

He hopes he didn't come across as the grumpy military guy, because that's not him. If he was like that it was because he was the La Mina guy with the target on his back and not allowed into the group. He was basically told he would never be part of the six by Aras and Shane (this was in the show, I remember it) so he decided he was going to wax them all the way to the finals. And he almost got lucky enough to do it – he was a pretty lucky guy.

He had about five strategies out there and he was 0 for 5. When it was himself, Sally, and Austin, they were going to give the idol to Danielle. She said she was going to get to the final four anyway, and they said OK, when they GET to the final four, they would give it to her and one of them would sacrifice themselves, guaranteeing her top three. They got desperate, he says. He kept winning, but he was never comfortable giving the idol to one of his guys because it would not have given them the numbers to ride all the way to the final four.

He's stoked to have gotten that far. Some of those challenges were so cool. Being able to play against the competition like the 24-year old college basketball stud, and waxing them most of the time. Heh.

Danielle will find out from her family, friends, and the ringing in her ears, she should have listened to the Navy guy. Not sure that she's thinking that, she lost either way.

Last Morning in Panama: What's funny, I almost stopped watching once Terry and Cirie were gone. Good thing I didn't, as I would have missed Aras fall flat on his ass. And bucko, if that's all it takes to smash your ego, I feel sorry for you.

Anyway, Aras and Danielle are thrilled to be in the final two. Aras thanks her again and gives her a big hug, which she doesn't seem thrilled about.

They go wash themselves and each other, with lingering shots of Danielle's huge tracts of land. Hey, I ain't complaining, that's about all she's good for as far as I'm concerned. Aras tries to be cool, but you know he's… well, you know he's probably glad the water is waist deep.

Danielle thinks people underestimated her intelligence in the game. That sound you heard was RNO Editor David Bloomberg's head exploding from laughing too hard. Everyone was supposedly so concerned about Aras/Terry and ignored other people who were as big or bigger threat than they were. Yeah.

Final Tribal Council: Hey, jury votes. Haven't had these in the last few years. Well, they didn't do them this year, as we only get a couple.

Did they do the right thing? Yeah, right. Choice between a giant douche and a turd sandwich.

Bruce votes for Danielle: "It's been an honor to share this game with you. Not only was it a great experience, but I know in the future you're going to hold this position with honor as the Survivor with the million dollars. (Oops) The best years of your life are yet to come." I guess, who am I to doubt Bruce's opinion? Danielle rules, I suppose.

Terry votes for Aras: "I am just so used to writing this name down. Of the two of you, you are head and shoulders the winner. Congratulations."

Lame. But appropriate way to end the Insider season. By being lame.
