With concerns that some of you may have about an inability to download stuff
from Jay's site, I have received his blessing to repost some of the stuff to
my own server. However, notice that I have a very limited amount of space,
and can probably post no more than three requests at a time.
Therefore here are the rules for posting to my own server.
1. Only one request per person per day.
2. Files shall be uploaded for only 48 hours, and shall be available via
Email only after that time.
3. NO REQUESTS FOR NEW MATERIAL PLEASE!
I will email each group when something has been posted.
Please email me with your requests at james.stanley.barr@...!
James S. Barr
I'm heading to Germany for a week and will have to remove some of the
material on my server in case they need the space while I'm gone. Will
repost when I return sometime after Dec 17.

Thought I would forward this to the other groups, too. Check out
"www.billtush.com"
if any of you remember his from the early morning TBS updates and the
"Tush" show in the early eighties on TBS. More info on this and
the now well-known people involved with this show below.

I
looked at your web site, all the stuff you have is very nice. Do
you have any 80s era animation from the following networks:
CNN Headline News
The Movie Channel (there was an open I remember where it was like a
car driving through a neighborhood and various billboards ending at
an electronic skyline of Hollywood with a pink background)
The Disney Channel
Showtime
I do remember the various network movie opens, the CBS '87 open you
had and the NBC '87 filmstrip, I do barely remember the ABC Star
Tunnel, other animations I remember are the HBO In Space, short and
long, an electronic open with the HBO film strips and an instrumental
rock soundtrack playing, I think I remember a feature presentation
logo done in marble lettering on TBS, and on Headline News there was
this opening with the logo in Rockwell italic font, and a topographic
map of the world. There was also a closing copyright tag with various
fast shots of the studios and facilities set to a cut of the theme
they used for stock market reports. I used to watch that channel a
lot, even though I was a kid. As for the Disney Channel when they
used to have the mouse head TV screen logo it was like a rainbow
logo, they had a blue skies background for the announcement of
upcoming programs, I also remember when the primetime lineup began
there was like a glass motif, with close shots of the glass forming
into the logo and it was used on all the movie opens, the lettering
had a glassy color like if you look at the edges of the glass and the
shiny prisms. Keep up the good work Jay, and let us know if there's
anything more.

Oh, I've got more. It's just the time thing again, and going through
tapes. Unfortunately, and much to my regret I threw out many, many
1" tapes and have also recorded over a lot of VHS tapes that had a
lot of the stuff you mentioned on it. But then again, I certainly do have
some of the stuff you mentioned. I should post the demo tape of my
predecessor at TBS, my mentor of sorts although we didn't get along well
because I wanted to his job (and indeed ended up doing just that). His
name is John Burns, and he did all the graphics for both CNN and CNN2
(now Headline News) when they went on the air. I remember him working
right up until midnight on the open for CNN2 -- they debuted at midnight
and the folks downstairs at Turner were sweating it big time. So his demo
tape has much of the very first CNN and CNN2 material on it. Definitely
historic stuff in my opinion now. And he, like me, was a one man band --
did it all himself in the middle of the night in dark control rooms. I've
got the TBS marble lettering ID I believe you're talking about. We went
out of house for that and then I added to it. That was just as I was
leaving TBS for CNN. TBS was getting a little too big for my "one
man" graphics department and CNN offered me a job basically doing
whatever I wanted whenever I wanted, and I couldn't turn it down. I had
absolute and total freedom, which is unheard of today. Now, there is a 50
or more graphics department at TBS doing what I used to do (and they do a
helluva lot better job, too). But also, they pay big, big bucks and go
out of house a lot. They definitely got their money's worth out of me for
12 years!
I remember the Headline News stuff you mentioned very well. I don't have
a copy of it but I'm sure John Burns does. Maybe I'll give him a call
after all these years and see if we are on good enough terms for him to
contribute. When he left TBS, I helped him smuggle hundreds of his
1" tapes out of there, and I'll have to remind him of that. He
wouldn't have those if it weren't for me and our mutual good friend Susan
C. Chance. But be patient, I've got a lot on my plate trying to round up
CBS material, and I'm expecting a "bunch of stuff" from Bill
Feigenbaum next week that I'll have to sift through, dub, and get back to
him. And I've got a weeks trip in Berlin coming up with the Atlanta
Symphony Orchestra that will delay things. All of this stuff will take a
while. I've got so many leads to follow through on, it's a little
overwhelming for me. If I didn't work a full time job helping to run a
Creative and Production house, it'd be a lot easier!
My daughter's mother, a great designer, designed the current Headline
News look that's on the air right now. All those pretty colors, and the
tons of type that some like and some don't. I did some test for her on
the new look that I'll post at some point. I've still got many friends at
Headlines, and when the time comes, I'll check into that. My old friend,
and the guy responsible for my being hired at TBS, Bill "Troll"
Tullis was the voice on all of the Headline News IDs for many years, as
well as all of the Newswatch opens on TBS.
For ancient history, I've even got very rare and classic stuff of the
early morning updates that Bill Tush used to do in TBS in the late
seventies. They are a riot. I'm surprised the FCC didn't come down on us
for that. I've got two hours worth. Anyone remember the "Tush"
show on TBS? I have access to copies of those shows, and also know the
guy who has the 2" masters. That show is worth note because the
producers were a man and wife - Bonnie and Terry Turner. They produced
the show and were in most of them. Also, Jan Hooks was one of the cast
members. You probably know Bonnie, Terry and Jan all went to Saturday
Night Live. Bonnie and Terry were writers/producers, and Jan of course
was one of the stars. She later went on to do Designing Women on CBS. I
have fond memories of working with all three of them. Jan was a real
cutie back then - I loved her to death, but she was all business, totally
into her career. She's certainly done quite well. Bonnie and Terry went
on to produce "Third Rock" and "That Seventies Show",
among others.
My friend Melanie Goux with "Television by Design" is working
with Bill Tush now on his new website. You should check it out. And I'll
have to post the early morning updates Tush used to do -- you won't
believe them. At that time, TBS was the ONLY station on the air on cable
after about 1am and literally had a 100 share of the market. TBS and HBO
were the only services on satellite for a few years and therefore the
only options on cable other than local stations. Later WGN, WOR and
others joined in, then it grew like wildfire into the hundreds of
channels we had now. HBO was the first, but it was a pay service - the
idea of Jerry Levin. Ted met with Jerry and Jerry suggested he put TBS on
the same bird (satellite) as HBO so that cable ops would have access to
both HBO and TBS with only the additional cost of a receiver. TBS was the
first free cable network on satellite, around 1976. TBS was only in a few
million households at this time, so many of you who were even old enough
may not have had access if you cable operator didn't have the necessary
large and expensive C-band satellish required at the time. By the time
the Tush show rolled around, though (1980 or 1981) we were in many
millions more homes, so you'd have a better chance of remembering
that.
Please check out the Tush website if you get a chance - it's still in
progress, and I'm helping them mpeg a lot of the old shows and bits, so
there will be many more posts to come. You'll see Bonnie, Terry, Jan and
the whole crew as they were 25 years ago just starting out.
I'll be working on this stuff in
general for the next year or more in my spare time, so if you want a time
frame, that's probably it. Patience as always is the watchword from
me.
I remember the Disney Channel stuff. From my perspective, that recent
history and I'm not concentrating on that. No doubt a ton of people have
that stuff on VHS.
A couple of additions compliments of Jermaine Schex!!! Among them, the HBO
in space open I and many others have been wanting to see for a while now.
Also, a classic CBS Movie open I hadn't seen in many, many years. Thanks
Jermaine.
Thanks Guy - I'm posting some CBS stuff soon compliments of Jermaine Shex
and just wanted to make sure you guys were getting my emails. I wonder
why the emails from the CBSMoviePromo group aren't coming back to me like
they do from the other groups?
The Sunday Night Movie open you're looking for is on Jermaine's
"most wanted" list, and I'm keeping my eye out for it too. I
have an ABC tape with some little snippets but no full open. I can't even
remember what that one looked like. The snippets I have say ABC SUNDAY
NIGHT MOVIE and the letters are made of dots.
I just sent out a request for old material to several of my broadcast
television mailing lists, and there are hundreds of people on these lists
who have been in the biz forever. Lots of editors and engineers on these
lists who may have copies of who knows what. Also, I just received a
response that my request will be published in two trade newsletters, so
we'll see what happens.
I just realized I have a good friend with contacts at what used to be the
abc affiliate here at that time. I'll ask him if they might have any of
that old stuff somewhere in the building -- he'd know where and who to
talk to.

I know I've got the NBC Wednesday Mystery Movie theme in my archives
somewhere. Though not nearly the classic Mancini Sunday Mystery Movie
theme IMO. I believe Quincy Jones was responsible for the Wednesday
version. I'll post if requested. I have an extensive collection of old TV
themes and related audio, old TV commercials and more, just fyi. Also
have CNN's entire current network music package on two CDs, in stereo,
which never airs on in stereo on CNN and certainly not full length. Just
fyi.
Over time I have a lot of interesting stuff for you guys besides just big
three network movie opens and promos. But it will be a slow process.

I going to continue to address my updates and questions to all three
groups. I hope this doesn't offend anyone. There is much knowledge I need
from all of you, and I simply don't have the time to respond to each and
every communication from everyone in each group. But believe me, I read
everything and will probably respond in this multi-group manner in the
future. I'm leaving out the abc group. Someone mentioned a
"something-2000" group -- who are they and should we include
them. If there is any rivalry between any of these groups, this poses a
problem for me. I need everyone's help. I have the connections and
credentials that let these folks trust me sending me their valuable
material, but I do not have the historical and detailed knowledge that
many of you do, and again, I need all of your help that I can get.
I've got a lot to learn. Not to sound cocky, but although I'm nationally
known as a video pioneer doing work never done before on the equipment I
was using, I know absolutely nothing about film. And I mean nothing. I
was asking Bill about how they did some of that early stuff on file, and
I feel certain he mentioned Edstan/Sel Animation several times in our
conversation, and I had no idea what he was talking about. Again, we'll
just have to see what he sends, but he rattled off a ton of work over
many years for all three networks, and I'm hoping to receive a treasure
trove of material, some of which may be the best copies of some of this
work remaining in existence today.
I record all of my conversations with these people and will hopefully
make it to the big apple to spend some time with and interview Mr.
Dorfsman, Bill, and perhaps some others. That's another angle, too, I
need to ask these people who else I should contact that would have
valuable material.
I assurred Bill that I would handle everything he sent as if they were
museum pieces, and he said please do -- thay ARE museum pieces, but he is
going to trust me with them. During my discussion with Bill about Mr.
Dorfman locating material for me, and my having tracked down Glenn Entis
(PDI founder now Chief Visual Officer with EA in Canada) and Richard
Chuang (now very high up or running PDI/Dreamworks after the merger
between Spielberg and Pacific Data Images), he suggested I pursue
collecting these materials as more than a "hobby", perhaps
writing a book, producing a documentary type thing with interviews of
these people I know, have recently made contact with, people I will be
steered toward in the future, and perhaps even getting with the Museum of
Television History in New York. Both Dorfsman and Feigenbaum admitted
that no one was accumulating this particular historical material in any
comprehensive fashion. There have been books, but most of the actual work
is scattered all over the place, decaying in archives, in people's
basements, etc. The more of these "legendary" pioneers I get
help from, the more clout and credibility that gives me to collect more.
I'm still astounded that Mr. Dorfsman offerred his full support to help
in any way he could.
It's funny that it's a small world world. Bill worked with Thad Bauer
(spelling) at NYIT, and I knew Thad well from PDI after he left NYIT.
Bill knew Lou, a "hello" I'll pass along to Mr. Dorfsman. We
have many other common acquaintances, and that helps a lot. I'm getting
excited about this -- if only I had more time to dedicate to this
"hobby".
And to have Bill Feigenbaum possibly send me what may be the best copies
of virtually all of his historic work in incredible. Again, I had no idea
he went back to being art director at NBC. And you say he produced the
1971 CBS Movie package? Perhaps that was one of the times Bill worked
with Lou. Bill did mention NBC movie opens. I just had no idea. I need to
read and learn as much from all of you as I can.
Next targets of mine are Richard Chuang, Glenn Entis, and Harry Marks,
along with whatever leads I can get from everyone I contact. I'm also
involved with several email list groups involving post-production houses
all over the country. We discuss technical issues and production trends,
and although it would be "off-topic", I'll do a posting about
this to them. I feel there may be many old-timers that will have either
material or leads. But I've got enough on my plate before I get to
that.
I'm thankful to these groups. I stumbled into this only because Jermaine
steered me to tvsboxoffice.
Ben, I've had to remove some of the files from our company server for
space reasons. I left the links because I plan to make just one page for
access by all three groups. I'll post new material, and leave the old
links there with a note saying the material has been removed but to send
me an email if you'd like it reposted. Ben, I'll repost the NFL today for
you when I can. That open is unique because it's an actual off-air
recording, but keep in mind that Bill Feigenbaum is sending me a 1"
copy of the original master tape. I just pray he's kept those sealed in
plastic bags. I've got 20-year old tapes that I sealed that remain in
virtually pristine condition, while the ones that weren't sealed are not
in good condition at all. I suggest that all of you keep any valuable
tapes sealed in airtight ziplock plastic bags. Humidity variations cause
severe tape degradation over the years. I had to learn that the hard
way!
I'll keep all of you updated, and please help me with any and all
information that will help us gather all of the historical material we
can find.
I can't thank you all enough. None of this would be happening without
your encouragement, invaluable knowledge and help.

I wanted to let you know that Bill Feigenbaum called me this morning and
is going to send me a box full of stuff -- much more than I was
originally after. I knew Bill and his wife Joyce about 20 years ago when
they were doing all of the cutting edge work for CBS Sports in the early
80s, but it turns out he was art director at NBC in the late 60s and 70s,
and he has a lot of stuff on 3/4" tape of NBC stuff dubbed from the
original 16mm masters. 3/4" isn't great quality these days, but
we'll take it. They probably look better than deteriorated 16mm films
anyway.
Turns out Bill worked with Lou Dorfsman for a time, too. I told him I had
just talked to Lou Friday. We talked about Harry Marks, too, but neither
of us know where Harry is now. I'll probably try to track Harry down
through Billy Ingram, who was in touch with him at some point about ABC
Movie of the week.
Bill mentioned vector animation for ABC news in the late 70s and a slew
of other stuff. I asked him to just throw everything he had in a big box
and send it to me, and he agreed. I think the CBS sports stuff will
mostly come on 1" tape, dubbed from the original masters, so that
will be some quality stuff if he's kept it sealed properly and in a good
humidity controlled environment. He mentioned several other things (CBS
NBA Open and more) for CBS sports that he would send. Said he produced
the first Star Trek promos at NBC, before the show ever aired, and he
would send those.
Feel like we've hit another gold mine here, and no telling what we'll be
getting.
Ben, Bill didn't know much about the set. It was pretty much like I told
you -- it's all eye candy. He met briefly with the set designers to go
over some colors, logo issues and such, but that was about it. The set
designers did their thing, and Bill did his - separately.
Feigenbaum was the only company on the east coast at that time doing
high-end computer graphics, and Bill was telling me how afraid CBS was
the new computer graphics. He said the NBA open made a big spash and
turned them around, but I don't remember that open.
Bill also mentioned a lot of NBC stuff of 3/4", but I'm not sure
what will come. He said it would take him a week or two to dig all that
stuff up, and then I'll have to dub it and send it back to him. So this
will take a while, not to mention I've a full time job to attend to
myself.
We'll just have to wait and see he sends!

Yup...here it is:
Description On a black background, we see an animated star
formation. Five multi-layered, multi-colored diamond shapes merge
together, as an image of a star expands.
We then zoom out as the formation receeds. They expand again until
the image becomes a rainbow-layered star. The many layers of the
star zoom out one by one until the last one dissapears.
And then the full title...
THE CBS
LATE MOVIE
...comes out to the middle of the screen. The words are filled with
colored lines of the animated star rotating behind the umbrella
title. Then we hear the announcer saying, "Tonight on The CBS
Late
Movie..." and then we cut to scenes from what is featured on that
night's show.

No kidding! I had no idea this theme went that far back. My gosh, they used it for at least 15 years. But then, that's one of the things that made CBS special -- they didn't try to reinvent the wheel every year or two like the other two networks.

Wow. That's a version of that music I don't recall hearing before. Any idea what year that's from? Sounds more like Montovani than Mort Stevens -- kind of an "elevator music" version of that theme! I think the announcer puts it in roughly the same time period with the classic theme I'm familiar with, but who knows. Very interesting to hear this.

Description : Maybe an old version of CBS Movie Theme.
I'm a newcomer, and I don't want to use up all of your server space.
But I also can't bring myself to compress things down to nothingness
on items I have that are of pretty good quality.
I've posted higher quality and slightly larger versions for you at:
http://www.springboardcreative.com/TVCBSPRO/CBSPROMO.htm
User is "cbspromo" and password is "spring".
There are also a couple of other items there - THE NFL TODAY open from
the 80's and the first season Mannix open, which are both still on the
server for someone else. Thought I'd include 'em in your page, though.
You can't really hear the difference, but the 72 music theme posted on
yahoo is 112kbps mp3 and the version posted at the above url is
128kbps mp3.
Also, I've done this kind of stuff for a living for about 20 years, 12
of them at TBS and CNN. So I've posted my 1980's and 1990's demo tapes
for you also. I just became a member of TVs Box Office at yahoo, too,
and these files are shared with a page I made for them, too. Their
page includes a couple of NBC movie opens from the 80's if you're
interested.
You'll probably notice that the movie opens aren't off-air. In fact, I
know the folks that did most of this stuff, although I haven't seen
them in about 15 years. I knew the entire gang at Pacific Data Images
that produced both the CBS and NBC movie opens. Glenn Entis animated
the CBS movie opens. He was very proud of that prime time movie open
-- every detail was perfect from the first lights lighting up to the
beat of the music to the last slam down of the title exactly on the
beat. Well, everything was perfect, he told me, except that he used
low resolution polygons on the reflections of the type. Nobody can see
that but Glenn. Those opens rendered in a huge room on about 40
computers at 50 degrees. I remember him showing me the original color
pencil storyboards of that prime time open. They were gorgeous, but
the video version turned out better than the boards.
Bill Feigenbaum produced THE NFL TODAY open for CBS. I spent an
afternoon with him and his wife in their office way back when (1985 or
so). Really nice folks. He did that open with the computers and
computer guys at NYIT. Look closely and that one has mistakes you CAN
see. Watch the second camera disappear into thin air as you pass it,
and you can also see portions of the green floor lines do the same.
This one is off the air because I can't find Bill's tape, which is of
course of much higher quality.
If you would like the higher quality versions, download 'em while you
can, although I'll try to give you a heads up before I remove them. I
can't promise, but they'll probably be up for you guys for a few
weeks. I'll post future things in the same manner, as well as lower
quality versions on the yahoo server if there is space.
I just recently decided to start collecting this stuff, and I'm going
to try to get back in touch with some of these folks and more I know
to see if they'd mind sending me some copies of these things on a
broadcast quality tape. I'm ashamed to admit that I've had all of the
stuff I've mentioned on broadcast quality tapes that may have gone
into the trashcan at some point. What a dummy - saving the VHS dubs
and throw away the good stuff! I've still got a bunch of tapes to go
through, though, and I'm hoping I'm wrong.
Guy -- as I listened to your posting of the 1969 version of the Mort
Stevens CBS movie theme, I was sure it was identical to version I have
-- until it got to that section that is slightly different. It must be
that the 72 version was re-recorded sometime between 69 and 72 with
that slightly different arrangement. Or perhaps he recorded several
arrangements to start with, since even the mixdown is virtually identical.
