The "Big Damn Weekend" package DOES NOT include: transit to/from
hotel/airport, taxis, overnight room, alcohol, Saturday breakfast,
Saturday lunch, Sunday breakfast.
Saturday Only: $100
The "Saturday Only" package includes: registration materials,
walking tour of Historic District/Chinatown, Big Damn Bus tour, one
track destination, Saturday buffet dinner, music, dancing,
entertainment.
The "Saturday Only" package DOES NOT include: transit to/from
hotel/airport, taxis, alcohol, Saturday breakfast, Saturday lunch.
Banquet/Ball Only: None
There is no "Banquet/Ball Only" package, for several reasons.
First, the purpose of the Browncoat Ball is for fans to spend as
much time as possible with their fellow fans from other parts of the
world. If you are local, we'd still like you to join us for the
whole weekend or at least ALL of Saturday to get to know each other
better. That is the spirit of the event.
Secondly, based on the various costs of the event, we are not able
to discount memberships any lower than we have. Even if you plan to
attend only the Saturday evening activities, you will still need to
buy the "Saturday Only" package.
TRACKS/TOURS
Because there is so much to see and do in Philadelphia, when
registering for the event, you will be asked to choose "track" which
best represents your interests, i.e. what activity do you want to do
Saturday afternoon. General Admission Fees will be covered in your
Browncoat Ball Membership, but if you wish to see any special
exhibits at your track destination, you will have to purchase that
on your own.
Captain Track
Whether you own or operate your own spacefaring vessel, or you just
have a keen interest in science, you'll want to spend the afternoon
at the Franklin Institute Science Museum. Space Command and the
Franklin Airshow are two permanent exhibits which will interest
would-be captains and pilots alike. And no Big Damn Hero would be
complete without a Big Damn Heart. http://www2.fi.edu/
Crew Track
If you like working on ships, or just traveling on them, you may be
interested in afternoon at the Independence Seaport Museum. Not
only can you learn about the history and science of Serenity's
nautical cousins, but you can climb on board the cruiser Olympia
(circa the Spanish-American War) and the submarine Becuna (circa
WWII)! Neither may be a Firefly-class transport, but it may be as
close as you ever come to one.
http://www.phillyseaport.org/
Finery Track
Whether you were trained at the Companion Academy or you just like
pretty things, maybe an afternoon at the Philadelphia Museum of Art
may be for you. You can explore the renowned exhibits and acclaimed
special exhibitions at one of the nations largest art museums… or
you can just run up the stairs like Rocky. Oh, go crazy, do both!
http://www.philamuseum.org/
Reaver Track
If you're a Reaver at heart, or just enjoy those sideshow tents on
little backwater moons, you might enjoy a ghastly afternoon at the
Mütter Museum and the Edgar Allen Poe house. "The Mütter Museum was
founded to educate future doctors about anatomy and human medical
anomalies. Our collection now boasts over 20,000 unforgettable
objects. These include fluid-preserved anatomical and pathological
specimens; skeletal and dried specimens, medical instruments and
apparati; anatomical and pathological models in plaster, wax, papier-
mâché, and plastic; memorabilia of famous scientists and physicians;
medical illustrations, photographs, prints, and portraits."
http://www.collphyphil.org/mutter.asp
Although he is buried in Baltimore, MD, Edgar Allen Poe lived in
Philadelphia for time, writing such stories as "The Gold Bug" "The
Black Cat" and "The Tell Tale Heart". If time allows, members of
the Doctorin' Track will get a tour of his former home.
http://www.nps.gov/edal/
A Big Damn Bus will pick up our wayward band at Chinatown's
Friendship Gate at 1:00pm and take us on a partial tour of
Philadelphia, dropping members of each track at their respective
destinations along the way. When you are finished at your track
destination, you hop on the Big Damn Bus again (they circulate on a
regular basis) and get back off near the hotel. All track
destinations close at 5:00pm. Your ticket for the Big Damn Bus Tour
is also included in your Registration for the BCB.
SCHEDULE
Friday, 9/28, 8:00pm-11:00pm – Welcome Reception
The episode "Shindig" from the series "Firefly" opens in a Pool
Hall. What better way to start our Shindig? Upstairs at Buffalo
Billiards, we will have a private room with 5 pool tables for 3
hours. Snacks will be provided, but the bar will cash and only for
them of drinkin' age (21 in Pennsylvania.) We are working on live
entertainment for this event.
http://www.buffalobilliards.com/philadelphia/
Friday, 9/28, 11:00pm – Night on the Town
After the welcome reception, the Browncoats may play the night away
at Buffalo Billiards, explore the nightlife of Old City Philadelphia
(it's a safe neighborhood where all the cool people go) or return to
the hotel to rest up for the next day's adventures.
Saturday, 9/29, 9:00am-11:00am – Walking tour of Historic District &
Chinatown
Professional guides meet BCB attendees at the convention hotel to
take them on a guided tour of the Historic District of
Philadelphia. Sites on the tour could include Independence Hall,
The Liberty Bell Center, National Constitution Center, Declaration
House, the First Bank of the U.S., Congress Hall, Christ Church and
Betsy Ross House. The tour will also explore Philadelphia's
Chinatown. This will be attendees' first opportunity to collect
images for the photographic scavenger hunt.
Saturday, 9/29, 11:00am-1:00pm – Vegan Dim Sum at Kingdom of
Vegetarians
What better way to end a tour of Chinatown than with a traditional
Chinese meal? Dim Sum is a Cantonese phrase which translates
literally as "touch the heart" but means "morsel" or "snack". It's
a brunch-like meal consisting of a wide spectrum of small choices,
from sweet to salty, served in small steamer baskets or on little
plates. We like to call it, "Some of `dis-n-some of `dat". It
traditionally includes combinations of meat, vegetables, seafood, as
well as desserts and fruit. At the Kingdom of Vegetarians, it is
all Vegan and all Kosher. They have convinced non-meats to
impersonate pork, chicken, beef and even seafood. This is a great
and friendly choice for those who dine vegetarian, vegan or Kosher.
It's also a grand experiment of "what's possible" for alternate
protein in a `verse where fresh meat is hard to come by. This mid-
morning meal will be followed by shopping at Reading Terminal
Market. (See below.)
(Estimated additional cost: $10)
Saturday, 9/29, 11:00am-1:00pm – Reading Terminal Market
Vegan Dim Sum with make-believe meat served in Chinese fashion may
not be to everyone's taste, so BCB attendees who prefer an
alternative will be delivered directly to the Reading Terminal
Market for lunch and shopping. "Mouth-watering aromas. Produce fresh
from the field. Amish specialties. Fresh meats, seafood, and
poultry. Unique, hand-made pottery, jewelry and crafts from around
the world. The hustle and bustle of a multitude of diverse people."
This is your chance to try a genuine Philadelphia Cheesesteak!
http://www.readingterminalmarket.org/
(Estimated additional cost: $10)
Saturday, 9/29, 1:00pm-5:00pm – Track Activities and Big Damn Bus
Tour
Because there is so much to see and do in Philadelphia, when
registering for the event, you will be asked to choose "track" which
best represents your interests, i.e. what activity do you want to do
Saturday afternoon. General Admission Fees will be covered in your
Browncoat Ball Membership, but if you wish to see any special
exhibits at your track destination, you will have to purchase that
on your own. (See the TRACKS/TOURS page for details.)
Saturday, 9/29, 5:00pm-7:00pm – Downtime
This is your time do with as you please. Rest up from the morning's
adventures. Explore the local attractions on your own. Hang out
in "Kaylee's Kitchen", the BCB Hospitality Suite with fellow
Browncoats. Get read for the evening festivities!!!
Saturday, 9/29, 7:00pm-8:00pm – Cocktails
Saturday night's festivities begin with a cocktail hour. Mix and
mingle with your fellow Browncoats. This is also the deadline for
the photographic scavenger hunt.
Saturday, 9/29, 8:00pm-9:00pm – Banquet
We have a very special Buffet Menu planned for you with many di-
`verse' selections. Much of it is a surprise, but we will tell this
much. There will be vegetarian and kosher options, as well as
dishes prepared from the Big Damn Chefs charity cookbook!
http://www.bigdamnchefs.com/
Saturday, 9/29, 9:00pm-12:00am – Ball
The Bedlam Bards will be performing for us. If you aren't familiar
with the Bards, not only do they play "RenFolk" music, but are ALSO
Browncoats. Their Firefly/Serenity inspired music was used in the
fan documentary "Done The Impossible" and is compiled on their own
CD, "On The Drift". Songs include "The Ballad of Joss" and "Big
Damn Trilogy", among others.
http://www.bedlambards.com/http://cdbaby.com/cd/bedlambards/
In addition to their `verse music, The Bedlam Bards will also play
some formal music for traditional English dance. We will have
a "caller" on hand to instruct those who wish to learn and will lead
the group in several dances. This will include a march to show off
your fine costumes.
In fact, costuming is encouraged. There will be awards in several
categories which we will be presenting during the ball. Scavenger
hunt awards will be presented at the same time. After the
traditional English dancing and the awards, BCB attendees would be
welcome to dance the night away to strange sounds of that new
fangled rocker music.
Sunday, 9/30, 10:00am – Big Damn Breakfast
Unfortunately, due to a scheduling conflict, Tom Smith
(aka "FilkerTom" ) couldn't join us at the Browncoat Ball this
year. However his song "A Chef Called Jayne", along with the Big
Damn Chefs cookbook, has inspired us to start a new tradition – The
Big Damn Breakfast. The idea is that this would be the last
activity everyone would get together for before disembarking from
the weekend's events. (Location and costs TBD.)

OVERVIEW>
The Inaugural Browncoat Ball (BCB) was held in Chicago in 2004, with
the goal of establishing an affordable, annual, non-profit event
created for fans by fans, capable of bringing Browncoats from
geographically diverse locations from all over the world together to
celebrate Firefly and our fabulous fandom. The vision for the
Browncoat Ball is that it will be held in a different city each year
The second Browncoat Ball was hosted by the San Francisco Browncoats
in 2006. It was a spectacular weekend-long event that drew in 150
browncoat attendees from across the United States, Canada and
Australia.
For 2007, the Pennsylvania Browncoats have stepped up to the
challenge. This year, our destination will be Philadelphia. It is
one of the oldest and most historically significant cities in the
United States. Philadelphia was the center of the independence
movement during the American Revolutionary War. The Declaration of
Independence and the US Constitution were both written in
Philadelphia, and signed in Independence Hall. So get ready to
break out your fanciest duds, journey to the "Home of Liberty and
Independents", and once again rub elbows with Browncoats from all
over the country (and beyond).
There are many types of conventions and get-togethers. Some revolve
primarily around meeting celebrities, attending themed panels,
getting early glimpses at industry projects, or browsing a dealer
floor full of geek-related products. At many of these conventions,
meeting and getting to know your fellow fans is a side note that
occurs in small doses between events or while waiting in long lines.
However, it is these interactions with our fellow fans that truly
make these conventions memorable. The Browncoat Ball is the opposite
of these conventions. Getting to know your fellow fans is the
primary objective of the Browncoat Ball, and we strive for that with
every activity, every ball, every year.
The Bedlam Bards
2007 Shindig Tour
We're pleased to announce our first ever Shindig Tour of The Bedlam
Bards, with appearances all across the eastern United States. At
each stop along the way, the Bards join the local Browncoats,
BedHeads, and rennies to raise money for various charities and
organizations, including Equality Now. A number of Browncoat vendors
have donated prizes for charity raffles in each concert.
The Philadelphia area Shindig will be:
Tuesday, April 24

When asked what kind of music they play, The Bedlam Bards often say
Celtic, but in fact they play "Renfolk Music," that unique blend of
Celtic, English, Scandinavian, and American folk music mixed in with
period tunes from the Renaissance and Middle Ages that rubs
shoulders with the occasional incognito rock song at most
Renaissance festivals. And the Bards have a lot of fun playing it.
And their fans love listening to it!
The Bedlam Bards are ALSO Browncoats. For those who don't know,
a "Browncoat" is a fan of the short-lived but much-loved television
show Firefly and the movie that grew out of it, Serenity, both
created by Joss Whedon, the mind behind such media hits as Buffy the
Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Toy Story.
Firefly was a special show. It was witty, insightful and new. It
was also misunderstood, mistreated and cancelled by the network
which aired it. Thousands of fans around the world were greatly
disappointed, even angered. So were The Bedlam Bards. Out of
adversity comes creativity. The Bedlam Bards wrote and recorded
songs about the show, the fans, the phenomenon, and ultimately the
movie. These songs have been collected on an album titled "On the
Drift"

Just joined here, so as to keep an eye on updates to the Ball as I plan
on attending. Some of ya'll may know me as "Zephyr" on other FF boards.
I'm also a member of the 76th, so I may well be attending the Ball in
uniform. ;)
The website is progressing slower than we'd like, so I will definitely post some of the details here for y'all. But in short, yes, plan to come. Yes, start saving! Things are looking great for the Ball!!!

The University of Pennsylvania Museum's Archeology and Anthropology
exhibits are worth a good look. A look at "Earth-that-Was-That-Was".
And not too far from the center of action, IIRC.

See "Serenity" on June 23rd - http://boston.cantstoptheserenity.com
The Franklin Institute is one of the destinations, though admission to that exhibit won't be included in the package. If you choose that destination, you will have several hours of free time to see that exhibit if it interests you.

While a Phillies game would be fun, it's not exactly 'verse-related, which was the central BCB committee required of the bids. The Philadelphia-based attendees might enjoy seeing the hometown boys play, but it might not be as interesting to those traveling from on far.
That said, there will be a range of activities for people to choose from. Everyone will get to experience some of Philadelphia tourism as well as some destinations targeted for Browncoats. If we only pull off 50% of what we are planning, I think everyone will be very happy!
We hope to have the BCB website populated before the end of March, including having the registration site go live. Bear with us!

OK, thanx.
Just a minor suggestion if you have not already worked out the itinerary yet. The Phillies are playing in Citizens' that weekend and some Browncoats might be baseball fans and like to see a game as a group be worked out as an option.
If not, it's cool. I'm sure there will be plenty else to do.

This is what happens when you open your mouth to something, oddly the same way my husband and I ended up with our own Pirate group. That boy just had to go and open is mouth and TaDa here we go with year 6 of planning!

This is what happens when you open your mouth to something, oddly the
same way my husband and I ended up with our own Pirate group. That
boy just had to go and open is mouth and TaDa here we go with year 6
of planning!
I can't wait for Reg to open, that way I can plot out where my extra
money is going for the rest of the year. I guess Dragon*Con is out
again this year too! ;)

Yeah, well, I have no idea what you mean about planning big. I openned up my mouth and we ended up with the Browncoat Ball here in Philly. :-)
There is a proposed agenda, but we are still working out a few details. We'll be posting info in the next week or two when registration goes live.

Yes, I know you. (I knew you when I responded, just playing along, heh.) So you too are no longer with TFN? I won't ask why. My departure from the local group wasn't how I would have wanted it to go.
Man, I sure wish we had more time for the Browncoat ball planning. I don't know if you recall but I undertook trying to secure room discounts for C3 for all of Fanforce (this was before I knew Gencon had already done that.) I had something like 200 rooms signed up for in a matter of a few months, had Gencon accepted my proposal to them. Hard work but it was fun doing it, even if it never came to fruition. If I had more time, I could try and swing something like this for the ball, but I'm too new here and don't have all the contacts like I did in the Fanforce group. Besides, I kinda retired myself from getting TOO involved with groups. I'll do a little for the local Browncoat group, but I'm not making the same mistakes I did i
n the Pittsburgh FF group.
For those that don't know I was the chapter head, VP, and PR man for the local Pittsburgh Star Wars group for a time. Opinions will vary depending on who you speak to, but basically I was trying to build up the group and do lots of things like planning meetings/parties, etc.-trust me lots of stuff. I think that some thought I was trying to make it my own personal SW group and felt threatened of losing their position or whatever. So rather than fracture or splinter the group, I took it upon myself to leave. I'd rather make the sacrifice than take down anyone as some in that group percieved I was trying to do. Plainly said, in my opinion I was trying too hard to make things happen and that didn't agree with others.
So anyway, I'm a Browncoat as well, but a quiet one. Oh I'd like to plan stuff, but I know from my own nature that I like to plan big-over the top sometimes, and wouldn't want to step on anyone's toes here.
I'm just hoping to go to this shindig and meet the stars. There's only 9 major people to meet, with some of the minor characters maybe as well. If I had to pick just a few though, I'd really like to meet Jayne, Inara and Kaylee. Badger would be cool to meet as well for one of the minor characters.

I'm just hoping to go to this shindig and meet the
stars. There's only 9 major people to meet, with some
of the minor characters maybe as well. If I had to
pick just a few though, I'd really like to meet Jayne,
Inara and Kaylee. Badger would be cool to meet as well
for one of the minor characters.
Any plans on that happening? Any kind of itinerary at
this juncture?
