the target demographic , perhaps similar to
Amazing Race situated on Gross Island .

I dont watch Amazing Race though .

The show needs some interaction with the tv viewer who can
play along with them .

Q&A ... Bindi Irwin

As host of Bindi's Bootcamp, Bindi Irwin is spreading the word about
conservation.

SCHOOL holidays have just finished, but you do distance education - have you had
a break?

I've been banking my holidays, which means I take time off later in the year. It
makes it a lot easier to fit filming in; it can be quite challenging to study
and film at the same time.

Tell me about Bindi's Bootcamp.

It's a game show that's all based at Australia Zoo and each episode features
teams completing different challenges, including Gross Island, Dangerous Dash
and Zoom Through the Zoo. A lot of the team challenges include things like
feeding the animals and getting close to this unbelievable wildlife that they've
never experienced. That makes the show very exciting. It's about encouraging
kids to have fun and be happy with themselves.

Has anyone lost a finger?

No! Which is a good thing. That's one of the great things about the show. Boot
campers and anyone who visits the zoo can hug a koala or tickle an alligator on
the tummy.

Where did the idea for the show come from?

I have to say, my little brother Bob was the inspiration and he designed some of
the challenges on Gross Island, like Whose Poo Is Who? It's a pretty disgusting
challenge that requires thick gloves, goggles and a brave heart. But you know
what? It's great watching these boot campers arrive at the start of the day and
they're all a little bit shy, but by the end of the day they were working
together as a team and really getting more confident. That's a wonderful thing.

Bindi's Bootcamp is a low-tech show. Why?

It's all about using your own knowledge and experience and not relying on
Google. I guess it's about that free-range kid mentality, if that makes sense.
All the contestants are competing for the title of Wildlife Warrior, which means
you'll dedicate your life to conservation and teach those around you about that
message. We need to take action now.

Do you think a lot of people still think of you as little Bindi Irwin?

I'm 13 now and as I get older I want to start tackling some bigger issues, like
non-consumptive use of wildlife. I don't want to see crocs end up as boots, bags
and belts. We're killing and consuming our wildlife icons.

How do you stay optimistic?

I get a bit depressed if I walk into a restaurant and see shark-fin soup on the
menu. My dad dedicated his life to getting across the wildlife message and I
love that I can carry on his legacy. I want to make sure his message never dies.
I'm doing something I'm passionate about, and that helps me stay optimistic.

Bindi's Bootcamp airs on Saturdays and Sundays on ABC3 at 5pm.
