Just a heads up that last week's episode of Andrew Mercado's The Playlist
was all about the monumental 1980 soapie disaster "Arcade" and featured cast
member Lorrae Desmond and co-creator and scriptwriter David Sale (ex-Number
96) to talk about the show and a bit about how it all went wrong. It can be
viewed online at http://theplaylist.com.au/post/2110

I also found on YouTube a video uploaded by actor Jeremy Kewley (who played
Robbie in the series) which included a promotional video "The Beginning Of
Arcade" featuring a different version of the show's theme tune and some
behind the scenes glimpses such as the design and construction of the mock
shopping mall:

Inspired by The Playlist, I then wrote this:

Another fun find on www.youtube.com: austv1 has posted the first three episodes

I was up until all hours last night watching the first 2 episodes. Hadn't
got onto the third. And while I watching it I was also having a browse of
your article on Skyways as well as having a flick through Andrew Mercado's
Super Aussie Soaps book just to refresh myself on the background of the
show.

Have always remembered Skyways fondly. I may have said this before but as a
kid I was sometimes allowed to stay "up late" to watch it. Initially it
wasn't intentional, initially it was because Channel 7 used to show That's
Incredible on Thursday nights and sometimes they'd have stories that would
freak out an 8 year old so I could never get to sleep afterwards. So
occasionally I'd be allowed to stay up to watch Skyways :-) I don't really
remember much about it from my viewing of it at that age but did catch some
re-runs that Channel 7 did in the 1980s, which was timely because Kylie and
Jason were the big teenage stars then and there they were as 10 year olds in
Skyways.

It is funny though seeing the chromakey efforts to make the studios look
like they overlook the tarmac. Quite comical to see from today's standards
but was probably quite advanced in 1979, although Number 96 tried it a bit
to do mock outdoor scenes from the comfort of the indoor studio. You always
knew a chromakey scene was coming up because Roma would suddenly be in an
orange uniform instead of her usual blue one because blue would obviously
clash with the chromakey!

Interesting too to see bits of Melbourne Airport as it was in 1979. From
the outside it looks like little has changed except the Ansett terminal is
now a Virgin one. (although now there's the multi-storey car park/hotel
building out the front) The inside of the airport though looked like lots of
browns and oranges... probably very on trend for the '70s!

Amazing the access they had to film in and around the airport, they'd never
be able to do that now.

It is certainly interesting and sometimes fun watching the old episodes of
'Skyways'.

Often the drama does not really work, and habit of some of the actors yelling
their dialogue doesn't help either.

Some of the cast are quite appealing: Judy Morris (lesbian flight attendant
Robyn), Deborah Coulls (flight attendant Jacki Soong) and of course Tina Bursill
as the stylish Louise Carter are great. The late Bill Stalker as security man
Peter Fanelli and Bartholomew John as a pilot are pretty good too.

Tony Bonner doesn't seem too comfortable in the role, while Ken James as the air
traffic controller Simon is very annoying. There's some episodes where Simon and
his snobbish mother get a lot of screen time and they are pretty bad. Another
pompous character, George Tibbett, is pretty annoying too.

The scenes involving flatmates Robyn and Jacki are probably the best part of the
show.

I first saw the series in afternoon repeats in the mid 1980s. The first episode
I saw was Robyn's last. I can tell you that that cliffhanger did come as a big
shock. You can see in the most recently uploaded episodes they are setting this
storyline up.

It seems no subject is offlimits: cocaine abuse and smuggling, suicide,
prostitution, heroin addiction, abortion, lesbianism, 14 year old rent boys...
it is all openly discussed (if not explicitly depicted).

My DVD arrived in the mail late last week. I'm holding off on starting to
watch it until Tuesday so then it will be exactly 40 years after the show's
debut in Sydney. (though in Melbourne it first appeared on 14th March,
Brisbane on 20th March, and Adelaide in April 1972).

And pardon me for protruding, as Dorrie would say, but as much as I hate
spamming I think this blog entry may be of interest to fans of the show:

http://blog.televisionau.com/2012/03/number-96-in-their-own-words.html

and am hoping to do another posting in time for Tuesday, time permitting.

Have been working our way gradually through the DVDs. Usually getting
through about 2 episodes a night although tonight was 4 episodes - 837, 838,
839, 840 - the lead up and immediate aftermath of the bomb blast. Am so
loving watching this show it's a pure shame that not all the colour episodes
are being released as Prisoner has been (twice now). I really hope this is
not the last Number 96 DVD release although I suppose it's fair to say that
the show is said to have 'jumped the shark' after the bomb. Even David Sale
himself admitted later it was a mistake.

Just one other thing to say, though. Of all the cast members to show us
their rear end... did we need to see Alf Sutcliffe's?? I bet when he signed
the nudity clause he never thought they'd ever make use of it!

I am still on the monochrome episodes.

The first episode is a little clunky but even by episode 2 and 3
things seem much smoother. Up until about episode 10 Dorrie seems
like a real antagonist, and she and Herb do not really mesh with the
other characters. But by episode 10 when Dorrie finds the photo of a
naked Bev, Herb and Dorrie have quickly switched to being comedy
characters - and they are great! At around the same time Alf becomes
more likeable, too.

I think the most surreal moment so far is when Bev (Abigail), while
having a mudane conversation with flatmate Janie, casually strips down
to her brief panties and bra, in the living room! Bev appears in
revealing costumes quite a lot, but the way she just stripped in this
scene was hilarious.

Overall the episodes are packed with incident and are very addictive
and enjoyable.

Hi my name is Annette cremer and I'm the grand daughter of old tivoli performer
stage name: David sterle 1927-1970
( raymound David cremer( family name)

and im after getting in contact with any one who may have known my grandfather
to ask them if they might have any information on the history of my
grandfathers career with the tivoli theatre from Sydney and Brisbane regarding
the dates in the subject line. But

i have taken up this search as my grandmother pat who is 82 going on 83 is
reluctant to talk about him as she finds it opening a raw old wound that she
rather not visit as they split up after being married for a while.

My grandfather then married other tivoli performers such as ruby Lacey and
after that Jan Adele now both these women are dead so i cant ask them anything
but i found 2 others contacted me after placing a add on the internet asking
anyone if they had parents or grandparents who knew them.

i found one elderly gentlemen by the name of Mr will newton at a bexley nursing
home who has the starting stages of dementia and talks occasionally so the
nurses are writing down for me what he can tell them and they said they'd pass
it on to me.

i also then found another elderly lady in a nursing home in wagga wagga who knew
him and i have since written to her but haven't heard back yet.

but any info on my grandfather would be appreciated apart from what i already
have from searching the internet.

and found about 50 articles and 1 video audio piece from the national library
archives from channel 9 in Melbourne from a old episode of homicide from a
episode he was in.

i have also asked my grandmother brother for info and other relatives who knew
him and what they could tell me.

i'd like to get to know what my grandfather was like and generally build up a
profile of him.I know he was very chummy with rosie sturgess

Funny Skyways scenes...

Anyone else think this scene is hilarious:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AKClQ664tM [1]

	 Just don't call me Shirley.

And just thing to add a bit of spice, Angela Menzies-Wills provides a
sexy walk-on.

	 http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=bHYpumfnU6I#t=282s
[2]

She acted in the framing story of Australian producted soft core sex
film 'Fantasm Comes Again'. Hired go nude in that film she ultimately
backed-out of stripping, so merely undid a few buttons as the film
progressed. Obviously she got over her inhibitions by the time of
'Skyways'.

British
television schedules were becoming littered with Australian soaps and
dramas, old and new, and the industry began to protest.
In October
1988 alone, there were as many as 8 serials from Australia on Britain's
two main terrestrial channels;
 Neighbours (BBC), The Flying Doctors
(BBC), The Sullivans (ITV and Sky), Prisoner: Cell Block H (ITV), The
Young Doctors (ITV), A Country Practice (ITV) and Sons and Daughters
(ITV).

There were even TV programmes dedicated to the subject
particularly after ITV launched another Australian series, Home and Away
(in February 1989), which ironically had debuted the very same week as
Richmond Hill in Australia on Seven Network.

Ten's cancellation
of Richmond Hill resulted in ITV losing interest in the series and not
long after its debut, key companies in the ITV group, Granada Television
and Central Television, chose to break away from the network
screenings.
