Hi All! I'm trying to find info. on an early 60's music show
called "Saturday Date". I realize this isn't a "soap" but I've
reached a dead end in my research. I believe the theme song was sung
by Billy Thorpe and, apart from that, I don't have anything else to
go on. Can anyone out there help me?

Of all the best Soap Operas which had the best lead actresses?

For shere memory lasting quality the one that I can recall at
the drop of a hat was one of the leads in Skyways. She was
one of the higher ups at the airport. I think her name was
Louise but I could be wrong.

Anyway she stands out as far as remembering goes. Any others
anyone can recall?

I can't help you I'm afraid, but somebody at the "Australian TV
History" mailing list might... I have forwarded your message there.

All I know about the show is that it was hosted by Jimmy Hannan and he
won a Gold Logie in 1965 for it.

Wow! Difficult call! Could it have been "Prisoner"? Or perhaps "Number 96"?

The woman from "Skyways" you describe was played by actor Tina Bursill who
went on to play the classy but sinister Sonia Stevens in "Prisoner". She has
also appeared in "Heartbreak High" and "Home and Away" among her many TV
appearances.

Remember a character from Prisoner called Randy. She would
bonk any man that came onto the prison grounds. LOL

Tina Bursill can't be all that old because she's also
been In Farscape in the episode "Look at the princess" Part 1-3
and she did not look all that bad in there.

So she must have been very young when she did Skyways. Anyone
know here age?

At a guess, I'd say she would have been mid 20's in Skyways (which was
1979)? That's either complimenting her or offending her, I know, but
considering these days she's mostly cast in "mother" roles of
teenagers or young adults that may put her around the middle 40's now.

Talking about youngies in Skyways - Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue,
both aged around 11 at the time, were guest stars in Skyways around
1979 playing brother and sister.

There was a rumour late last year that Olivia Hamnett had passed away,
however I saw nothing official about this, only a couple of forwarded
emails.

Certainly Val Lehman, a fellow 'Prisoner' actor when they were both in the
show 20 years ago, has not heard any official word, so this might just be a
rumour.

Tuning into Big Brother tonight I caught the end credits of "Neighbours" and
noticed that one time "Prisoner" actor Maggie Millar has joined the series
as a character named Rosie. Rosie is also shown in the closing image showing
Lou and Harold, which to me indicates that Rosie must be intended as a sort
of Madge replacement, and that she will be a key character in the series.

Millar of course played the legendary villain Marie Winter in "Prisoner".

Can someone please refresh my memory as to what happened to Bea Smith
in "Prisoner" (or "Cell Block H" for anyone overseas)?

My vague recollection was that Bea managed to disguise herself as a
prison officer and walked through the gates of Wentworth to freedom
under the watch of her 'fellow' guards.
However, upon watching an episode of Prisoner from the DVD that has
just been released, there is mention that Bea Smith was instead sent
off to Barnhurst and apparently later burned to death in a prison fire
there. But yet I'm almost certain, however vague my recollection is,
that Bea did the disguise bit to walk out of Wentworth? Maybe that
did happen and she ended up back inside, but I seem to recall that the
disguise storyline marked her big exit from Prisoner.

Yeah, she did disguise herslf - Val Leham refused to film the stoyline with
Alan the bloke being admitted to Wentworth so she went on the run. However,
she was caught and returned to Wentworth. She was sent to Barnhurst (ep
400) - around ep 600 (after Val had refused to return) they said she had
been killed in a fire.

It was odd, they all remembered good old Bea - but none of the cast were in
it when she was - a bit weird.

Hi everyone
I've just joined this group & I have an interest in collecting pics
of our female TV soap stars.

My collection covers about 35 years of Oz TV. My favorite "babe" is
Alexandra Fowler from "Sons & Daughters" & "Big Sky". I have a lot of
pics of Rebecca Gilling, Lenore Smith & even Victoria Nicholls
from "The Restless Years". She was a lot better looking then (before
the zany days of sale of the century).
I have some fantastic pic of Kim Wran too (remember her?) -what ever
happened to her? Amazing she didn't follow her father into politics.
I only recently come across great pics of Delvine Delany from "The
Box" days - 1974 to be exact. These are displayed at my website.

I am interested in swapping with others & I have a website at
www.geocities.com/dxer2_2000/index.html

Hard to get this website up on search engines. You really need to
look hard for it!
Some of you may already know the site of course.
Cheers
Geoff

Yes Bea did get out of Wentworth very early in the series (she may
have escaped but I seem to think it was a legitimate release) and paid
a visit to her husband with a "score to settle" and consequently shot
him, and ended up back inside at Wentworth. This was very early in
Prisoner, would have been 1979 (its first year). This rated a mention
in the "flashback" episode (#536) that features on the DVD.

The disguised escape storyline would have followed around 1983ish?
And I guess the Barnhurst incident (also featured in the flashback
episode #536) was a year or so later?

It's a 3 disk set, released earlier this year by Kaleidoscope Films
under licence from Grundy Television. The first disk is called "The
Early Years", 2nd is "The Terrorist Siege" (eps 550-2) and the 3rd
disk is "The End".

Disk 2 also features the "flashback" episode (536) and also a special
interview with Anne Phelan.

The Bea Smith was a main character in "Prisoner", dominating many storylines
for more than four years. She was released once and escaped many other times
during her run in the series.

It is true that one storyline featured her strolling out of the prison
disguised as a prison officer. After escaping in this way she was absent for
a couple of episodes but we soon saw her on the run in Sydney, and her
eventual recapture and return to Wentworth. This storyline was airing at the
time it was revealed that Val Lehman had decided to leave the series, in
April 1983, however she continued to be seen on-air for another six-months
after this escape storyline.

After the news of Val's departure broke the writers ran a few dramatic
storylines which suggested a big dramatic death for Bea Smith. She was
caught in the lassa fever outbreak, and then locked in a cell with a time
bomb strapped to the gate outside. However Bea survived these disasters and
she was finally written out of the series permanently by being transferred
to Barnhurst in an episode that first aired in Melbourne in September 1983.

This abrupt prison transfer was secured after Joan Ferguson baited Bea to
attack her, and the last we saw of Bea was when Joan marched her out of the
prison for the iminent transfer.

The producers had intentionally not killed Bea off and several times asked
Val Lehman to return to the series. After a third emphatic refusal they gave
up, and, presumably wishing to provide closure to the character, reported in
mid-1985 that Bea had died in a big fire at Barnhurst.

The 4,000th episode of Neighbours screens tonight (May 10) at 6.30pm
on the Ten Network.

Herald Sun TV writer Robert Fidgeon's feature article earlier this
week on the series included...

* that Grundy's offered the series to Nine back in 1982. Nine knocked
it back. Later offered to Seven in 1984. First episode screened on
Seven on 18 March 1985.

* despite strong ratings in Melbourne and Brisbane (both at 6.00pm),
it was rating poorly in Sydney where it was scheduled at 5.30pm in
direct competition with Ten's hugely popular "Perfect Match".

* Network politics saw Seven dump the series in October 1985, despite
heavy lobbying from HSV7. Sydney-based management opting to pursue
instead with Sydney-based drama productions "Sons & Daughters" and "A
Country Practice".

* immediately after Seven axed the series, Grundy's offered it to Ten
who gladly accepted. The first Network Ten episode (#171) went to air
20 January 1986 at 7.00pm (moving to the 6.30pm timeslot in 1992).

* Neighbours made its debut on BBC1 on 27 October 1986. It is now
shown in 57 countries.
