Free TV: Lock Out Your Children

Censor your TV with one digi lock - block out junior from unsuitable shows with
new parental tool.

Free TV Australia are pushing their parental lock available on "most" digital
TVs that gives parents greater control of their children's television viewing
options.

The 'parental lock' feature allows viewers to block access to programs based on
their classification, and in some cases block access to entire channels, with
the use of a personal identification number (PIN).

Once the lock is activated, only those who know the PIN can access or view the
blocked content.

Parental Locks are available on most digital TVs, digital set-top-boxes and
digital video recorders.

The Australian Communications & Media Authority (ACMA) mandated that all new
digital TV receivers sold after 4 February 2011 must include Parental Lock
functionality.

"The Parental Lock is an important tool for parents who wish to control their
children's viewing choices," CEO Julie Flynn said.

"With a couple of clicks on the remote control, parents can block access to any
program based on their classification, or even block whole channels."

Bindi Irwin to star in new ABC show

Bindi Irwin is to star in a new wildlife-themed game show for the ABC.

The 26-part series, Bindi's Bootcamp, is being produced by FremantleMedia
Australia and will screen on the children's channel ABC3 next year.

The 13-year-old last appeared on television in the 2007 series Bindi The Jungle
Girl, made for pay TV's Discovery Channel. Production was interrupted when her
father Steve died after being stung by a stingray in north Queensland in
September 2006 while shooting some filler footage for his daughter's series.

Last year, Irwin starred in the straight-to-DVD family movie Free Willy: Escape
From Pirate Cove, the fourth film in the series.

In her new show for the ABC, Irwin will host a challenge-based competition
between three teams of two. The contestants will be tested in the areas of
''inner strength, knowledge and endurance'', according to a release from the
ABC.

The nine highest scoring teams across the series will come together for the
season finals to battle it out for the title of Wildlife Warriors.

Wildlife Warriors is also the name of the charity established by Steve Irwin and
his wife Terri in 2002 to ''support the protection of injured, threatened or
endangered wildlife''. The organisation is now independent. Bindi Irwin
professed herself delighted at the prospect of hosting the new show.

''I'm so excited to start filming and to meet all of the contestants,'' she
said. ''It will be great fun putting them through adventure challenges as well
as educating and testing them on their wildlife knowledge.''

Fremantle boss Ian Hogg praised Irwin, claiming she is ''a unique and exciting
television talent''.

He added: ''Bindi's Bootcamp will be a vibrant program with a very important
environmental message''.

Production delayed on ABC's Resistance

[Wed 21/12/2011 09:56:37]

By Amanda Diaz

Production on ABC's $14 million TV series, Resistance, has been delayed, with
filming to commence in the first quarter of 2012.

The sci-fi series - a co-production with Canada's Shaftesbury Films, was
expected to commence a 23-week shoot in October, and was a key part in
establishing South Australia's Adelaide Studios complex.

According to South Australian Film Corporation chief executive, Richard Harris,
the series - which was to consist of 26 half-hour episodes - is being cut down
to an unspecified number of episodes, with the delay in production a result of
story changes and script rewrites.

The changes will see a shorter shoot than initially intended.

The ABC confirmed to IF that the production process will begin at the end of the
first quarter of 2012, subject to script approval.

Resistance is the ABC's most expensive children's live action series, and
follows a group of teenage resistance fighters who must protect humankind from
an alien invasion.

Producer Andrew Dillon was contacted by IF, but did not respond.

Adventure show Bushwhacked! begins filming in Tasmania

Former child actor Brandon Walters and ABC3's children's host Kayne Tremills
have begun filming action-adventure TV series Bushwhacked! in Tasmania.

The series, which aims to intertwine the exploration of Australian landscapes
and wildlife with education about Aboriginal culture, will also be filmed in
Queensland, the Northern Territory's Red Centre, rural and northern New South
Wales, Tasmania's Eyre Peninsula coastline, and urban Victoria.

Walters will set several challenges for co-host Tremills in the 13-part series,
from tagging a tiger snake to swimming with great whites. However, the series
will also explore elements of bush survival and Aboriginal culture as Walters
introduces Tremills to Aboriginal rights and rituals, as well as bushmen,
jackaroos and Aboriginal elders.

It is the first screen project for Walters since he made his screen debut in Baz
Luhrmann's epic film, Australia, in 2008.

The series is being produced by North One TV, which previously released Outback
United, a documentary tracing the story of Indigenous Australians within
football.

North One TV head of programming, Adam Kay, said Bushwhacked! will be an amazing
wildlife show but also "open a rare window into Aboriginal culture".

The series will screen on ABC3 later this year and will receive international
distribution by the Australian Children's Television Foundation.

AACTA unveils first round of awards

[Sun 15/01/2012 07:12:25]

By Brendan Swift

The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) has unveiled the
first round of its revamped awards at a Sydney luncheon.

Presenters at the event, which was hosted by actor Sigrid Thornton, included
actors such as Radha Mitchell, Rebecca Gibney and Susie Porter, as well as
directors Bruce Beresford, Fred Schepisi and Adam Elliot.

Australian cinematographer Donald McAlpine ACS ASC picked up the AACTA's highest
accolade, the Raymond Longford Award, while filmmaker Ivan Sen received the
Byron Kennedy Award, which recognises innovation and the pursuit of excellence.

Sen, whose latest film Toomelah screened at last year's Cannes Film Festival,
was chosen for "his unique artistic vision and for showing, by his resourceful
multidisciplinary filmmaking, that telling stories on screen is in reach of all
who have something consequential to say".

Meanwhile, production designer Herbert Pinter was awarded the AACTA Award for
Outstanding Achievement In Television for his work on Tim Winton's cloudstreet.

ABC programs dominated the TV awards with Chris Lilley recognised for Angry Boys
(Best Performance in a Television Comedy), Laid winning Best Television Comedy
Series, and My Place, Series 2 recognised as the Best Children's Television
Series.

Among the Australian feature film award winners were The Eye of the Storm, The
Hunter and Snowtown, which each received two craft awards. Meanwhile, Legend Of
The Guardians: The Owls Of Ga'Hoole was awarded Best Visual Effects.

The highest grossing Australian film at the box office in 2011, Red Dog, was
awarded the AFI Members' Choice Award.

Crowd-pleasing feature documentary Mrs Carey's Concert led the documentary
awards with awards for Best Feature Length Documentary and Best Direction in a
Documentary. Other documentary winners included Jandamarra's War, SAS - The
Search for Warriors, murundak - songs of freedom, Out of the Ashes, Shut Up
Little Man! An Audio Misadventure.

The Palace, an Australian/Cypriot co-production, won Best Short Fiction Film and
Best Screenplay in a Short Film, while Nullarbor picked up the Best Short
Animation award.

Nominees were also announced for the new AACTA International Awards via a live
cross to actor Jacki Weaver at the G'Day USA Black Tie Gala in Los Angeles.

The AACTA Awards are run by the Australian Film Institute and replace the AFI
Awards, which were first launched in 1958.

The NSW government is spending $1.7 million a year on the AFIs – almost
one-third of the $6.26 million in production financing it invested (via Screen
NSW) across 41 film and TV projects in 2009-10.

"Today's awards are the first of our two awards events and highlight the
exceptional work of our craftspeople," AFI | AACTA chief executive, Damian
Trewhella, said in a statement.

"We encourage all Australians to support our local screen industry by watching
the Samsung AACTA Awards ceremony in two weeks' time to see which films and
television productions are awarded our nation's best."

The remaining AACTA Awards will be announced at the AACTA Awards ceremony at the
Sydney Opera House on January 31, which will be broadcast on the Nine Network.

Yellow Wiggle's luck changes: he's back with the band

Greg Page was forced to quit the internationally successful children's band the
Wiggles five years ago after 16 years in the yellow skivvy. He was suffering
from a rare medical condition.

"This takes me full circle. I'm excited to be back with my friends and to be
entertaining our incredible fans again," Page said in a statement released this
morning.

"I didn't get a chance to say farewell last time, so this is an opportunity I
couldn't refuse.

"I'm feeling great and looking forward to doing what I love."

Sam Moran, who replaced Page, has offered to step aside.

"I am very proud of my five years as the yellow Wiggle and the group's continued
success with me as their lead singer," he said.

"I have enjoyed every minute of my nine years touring with the group, but I now
look forward to new opportunities and more time spent with my wife and
two-year-old daughter."

Page, 40, left the group in November 2006 after being diagnosed with orthostatic
intolerance, which left him disoriented whenever he stood upright.

Singing also triggered hyperventilation and dizziness.

In 2010 CNNMoney estimated the Wiggles were earning $45 million a year.

Early last year, Page was reported to have lost some of his fortune after
starting a property development business that struggled in the economic
downturn.

During an interview to promote his memoir, Now and Then, Page said he felt like
a "total failure" after losing a considerable amount of money.

But he denied reports he was forced to sell his mansion in Dural, in Sydney's
north-west, as a result.

Page said his financial losses made him a better person.

"It taught me a lot of things," he said.

"To be more grounded, to appreciate what we have, rather than look for what we
don't to make us happy.

"I was looking for something to do to make me happy and I was looking to try to
be successful again … rather than what was the beauty of the Wiggles, which is
that it just happened. We weren't trying to create success.

"So it taught me to live in the moment.

"I also know myself better now; I'm more comfortable with the fact that I have
faults and flaws.

"Whereas before, I guess, I wanted to believe that I was … not perfect but that
I was somehow impervious to the real world. Now I'm a real person who lives in
the real world."

Page returns to perform with long-time friends Anthony Field, Murray Cook and
Jeff Fatt.

"Greg is an integral part of Wiggles history and will now play a role in its
future," Field said.

"Despite his absence for the past five years, fans worldwide remember him
fondly.

"It's terrific to be able to bring him back into the group."

Esben Storm honoured with ADG award

Australian filmmaker Esben Storm, who died last year, will be honoured with a
new award in his name at the Australian Directors Guild Awards.

The award will be the Esben Storm Award for Best Direction in a Children's
Television Program.

It will be presented at the ADG Awards on May 11.

Storm passed away last March, aged 60.

The head of Storm Productions, which he established in 1978, Esben was
particularly known for his work as a director of children's TV including Round
the Twist, Crash Zone, The Genie from Down Under and 2007′s SBS series
Kick) . he was also an actor with his last appearance on All Saints.

Storm directed the features 27A (1974), In Search of Anna (1978), With Prejudice
(1982), Stanley (1984) , Deadly (1991) and Subterano (2003). He also made
documentaries such as The Tasty Bust Reunion and America, and for many years
tried, unsuccessfully, to adapt John Marsden's novel Tomorrow, When the War
Began.

The Award is sponsored by the Australian Children's Television Foundation.

Ray Argall, President of the ADG, said: "Esben Storm was one of Australia's
leading directors and he brought his unique talents to the children's drama he
created. So many much-loved memories have been forever forged into the minds of
Australian children who grew up with the characters and stories he brought to
life on screen as a director, writer and producer.

"Esben embodied the true spirit of the creative filmmaker – he was driven,
passionate and stood up for what he believed. Not something easy to do in the
filmmaking business. He was a founding member of the ADG/ASDA and, over the past
30 years, advocated the core values of the directors' guild. On set and during
all phases of production Esben was loved by the crews and cast that worked with
him, and he had a special rapport with the young performers he worked with in
the children's television drama he excelled at."

Jenny Buckland, CEO of the ACTF, said: "Esben and Paul Jennings created Round
the Twist, an iconic series that has brought laughter and enjoyment to millions
of children around the world for more than 20 years. Esben is connected with
many ACTF productions – as a writer, script editor, actor, and most frequently,
as a director. He was one of a kind and, to those he worked with, he sparkled,
entertained, provoked and challenged, always looking to push the boundaries."

Subject: Children's television quotas facing the chop
modelpower2006
Send Email Send Email

TV stations call restrictions anachronistic but new rules may ruin kids' drama.

AUSTRALIA could lose protection over the amount of children's drama shown on
television, and digital platforms such as YouTube could be forced to subsidise
local content in a major overhaul of media regulations.

The interim report of the federal government's Convergence Review - which will
result in new rules for TV, radio and some internet sites - recommends a minimum
level of local content based on a ''percentage of expenditure'' formula. But it
is uncertain whether children's drama will be compulsory under the new system.

Of the top 20 children's television shows, only four are made locally. Australia
is the only country that imposes quotas on children's drama, requiring
commercial channels to screen 96 hours of local, first-run programs over three
years.

The system was introduced in 1984 to counter the glut of American cartoons and
sitcoms in the after-school timeslot. Since then, there have been many
critically acclaimed series with a global audience, including Round the Twist,
Lockie Leonard and Pearlie, which screens in more than 100 countries.

But the commercial networks - Seven, Nine and Ten - now argue that the quotas
are outdated.

In its submission, Network Seven called for the ''anachronistic'' quotas to be
dropped altogether, arguing there is now a ''proliferation of quality and
accessible children's content'' on other platforms such as DVDs, iPads, catch-up
websites and digital video recorders.

Industry body Free TV Australia also opposes the children's quotas.

A senior source from one network said: ''If you look at the three commercial
stations, none of them goes a minute over their children's quotas because
there's absolutely no market for it. It's insane.''

An OzTam ratings report, commissioned by The Sunday Age, shows that Seven, Nine
and Ten did not rank in the top 20 children's dramas of 2011; 18 of the
highest-rating programs were shown on the ABC's children's channel, ABC3, with
the remainder on ABC1. Only four of these shows were made in Australia.

''We're funnelling money into good-quality kids' programs that nobody watches,''
the source said.

The networks also oppose children's quotas because of the associated limits on
advertising and news flashes.

''Free TV is entirely advertiser-supported,'' the source said, ''yet we have to
turn Coco Pops away because of the ad restrictions. Then the advertisers go,
'Fine, we'll just take our ad to pay TV', which has no such restrictions.''

The interim Convergence Review report recommends the overall Australian content
quota of 55 per cent continues ''in the short to medium term''. Beyond that, it
proposes that quotas be replaced to reflect the money spent to produce content,
or revenue generated from it.

Depending on a network's financial position, this could significantly alter its
production of local content.

However, web platforms could be forced to contribute to a general fund to
subsidise Australian production.

A Convergence Review spokesman would not clarify whether YouTube and similar
sites would be taxed.

Nor did he confirm whether children's content would be made compulsory, saying
the final report, due in three weeks, would specify this.

But the Australian Children's Television Foundation wants children's programs to
be protected under the new system. ''If you've got around 20 per cent of the
population under 14, I think it's fair that the kids' audience gets around 20
per cent of whatever's there,'' said the foundation's chief executive, Jenny
Buckland.

Ms Buckland believes that until the new system starts, the burden on commercial
networks should be eased by allowing them to screen approved local children's
drama on their digital multi-channels. She also wants these programs to be
scheduled in ''blocks''.

''The networks aren't going to show a kids' program at 5.30pm on their main
channel,'' Ms Buckland said. ''But if they were allowed to do it on Go! or
7Mate, it would reflect the fact that many kids come home a bit later now.''

She adds that while commercial children's dramas don't always attract big
audiences in their first run, they pick up many viewers via repeat screenings,
catch-up services, iPad viewing apps and DVD sales.

''ABC does a fantastic job with kids' drama,'' Ms Buckland said, ''and Australia
has a great reputation overseas for children's drama. For a long time, we were
the only ones who invested in it, so it really stood out.''

Ms Buckland said it was important for the ABC to have competition from the
commercial networks, and that children's TV producers ''need more than one door
to knock on''.

''Television is one of our great storytelling devices and we need some stories
to be culturally relevant,'' she said. ''It doesn't mean you can't watch Hannah
Montana, but it's really important that our kids hear their own language and see
our diverse society being reflected at them.''

Networks fight children's TV local quota

"We're funnelling money into good quality kids programs nobody watches,"... a
senior network source.

AUSTRALIA'S status as a world-class producer of children's drama is under
threat, with TV quotas set to be scrapped in an overhaul of media regulations.

The interim report of the federal government's convergence review - which will
result in new rules for TV, radio and some internet sites - recommends local
content volumes be determined by a ''percentage of expenditure'' formula. But it
is uncertain whether children's drama will be mandated under the new system.

An OzTam ratings report, commissioned by The Sun-Herald's sister paper in
Melbourne, The Sunday Age, shows that Seven, Nine and Ten did not have a single
program in the top 20 children's dramas of 2011. Eighteen of the top-rating
shows screened on ABC's children's channel, ABC3, with the other two airing on
ABC1. Only four of these shows were Australian.

''We're funnelling money into good quality kids programs nobody watches,'' a
senior source from one network said.

Australia is the only country that imposes a children's drama quota on
commercial channels, requiring them to screen 96 hours of local, first-run
scripted programs over three years.

The system was introduced in 1984 to counter the glut of US shows in the
after-school slot. It has resulted in many critically acclaimed series with a
global audience, including Round the Twist, Lockie Leonard and Pearlie, which
screens in more than 100 countries.

But, in its submission to the review, Channel Seven called for the
''anachronistic'' quotas to be dropped, arguing there was now a ''proliferation
of quality and accessible children's content'' on other platforms such as DVDs
and iPads.

Seven declined to comment but the source said: ''If you look at the three
commercial stations, none of them goes a minute over their children's quotas
because there's absolutely no market for it.'' The networks are also concerned
about associated limits on advertising and news flashes.

The interim report recommends the overall Australian quota of 55 per cent
continue ''in the short to medium term'' and be replaced long-term by a minimum
percentage of expenditure or revenue on local shows.

The Australian Children's Television Foundation wants children's programs
protected under the new system.

''If you've got around 20 per cent of the population under 14, I think it's fair
the kids' audience gets around 20 per cent of whatever's there,'' said chief
executive Jenny Buckland.

WIGGLES SHAKE-UP: Woman joins the band, everyone except Anthony to be gone by
end of 2012

Anthony is only original member to stay
Stand-in Wiggle Sam Moran not asked back

Anthony, Greg, Jeff and Murray today announced that 2012 would be their final
year of touring together and unveiled exciting plans for the ...

A WOMAN is joining The Wiggles.

Emma Watkins, a 20-year-old backup dancer with the group, will become the new
yellow Wiggle as part of a major shake-up of the children entertainers.

Jeff Fatt, Murray Cook and Greg Page will retire at the end of 2012, making way
for new faces from the back-up crew.

Anthony Field is the only original Wiggle who will remain as part of the show.

"Anthony loves it too much," a spokesman said.

Anthony and Emma will be joined up front by Lachlan Gillespie and Simon Pryce,
who have been handpicked by the group to become the purple, yellow and red
Wiggles.

"We've been entertaining children around the world for 21 years and it's
important we plan for the future so that the Wiggles can keep wiggling in the
years to come," Murray said.

He said the touring over the past 21 years has kept the band members away from
their families for long periods of time.

"We miss them and want to spend more time at home which is a major reason why
three of us decided it was time to hand on our skivvies to a new generation,"
Murray said.

Greg said when The Wiggles asked him to return to the group last year, he was
thrilled at the thought of performing with the three guys he started the group
with 21 years ago.

"Murray and Jeff's decision to stop performing at the end of the year - it's a
nice sense of closure to end my time on stage during the final tour with all the
original members of the group," Greg said.

"We want to thank all our Wiggly fans - it's been a great ride in our big red
car. We are really looking forward to saying farewell and having one last dance
with everyone during the tour," Jeff said.

There was no talk of asking former Wiggle Sam Moran back into the fold. A
spokesman said Sam had moved on to pursue a career in musical theatre.

Emma, Lachy and Simon will join the original members of the Wiggles 'on the
road' for their Farewell tour. After that they will pull on the yellow, purple,
and red skivvies and join Anthony on stage so that The Wiggles can continue to
entertain and delight a new generation of children.

"Lachy, Simon and Emma all have wonderful singing voices and are experienced
children's performers. They have worked with us for several years, playing
various characters including Wiggly dancers, Dorothy the Dinosaur, Captain
Feathersword and Wags the Dog," Anthony said.

Emma said it was a huge thrill to become the Yellow Wiggle and the first female
skivvy-wearer in the group's 21-year history aside from Kylie Minogue, who was
made an honorary Pink Wiggle in 2009.

"I've been a big fan of The Wiggles since I was a little girl, so it's a huge
privilege to be invited to wear one of the skivvies and perform for a whole new
generation of children," she said.

Emma was the winner of the My Mutation dance competition, which was
choreographed by famed dance instructor Kelley Abbey and has performed in music
clips for Nikki Webster and various fashion shows.

Lachy said he was delighted to be invited to become a Wiggle, having spent
almost three years with them as part of the touring show.

Each year the Wiggles performs to nearly a million people worldwide, and have
sold 23 million DVDs and seven million CDs since they started.
