Children's channel on air by Christmas

ABC TV will launch its digital children's
channel in time for Christmas. It will
feature dedicated children's programming
for 15 hours a day.

The new channel, ABC3, will be aimed at
six- to 15-year-olds, with a particular focus
on eight- to 12-year-olds.

Programming will start daily at 6am and
continue free of advertisements until 9pm,
with a range of comedy, drama, sport, music,
wildlife and quiz shows.

Director of television Kim Dalton said
yesterday, ''ABC3 is the newest kid on the
block in the world of Australian television.

''This channel is about entertainment; it's
about information; it's about having fun.
We're describing it as a Christmas present
to the nation, so it will be unwrapped in the
lead-up to Christmas.''

The Federal Government has provided $67
million over three years to fund the channel,
which will air locally produced shows such as

The comedy
After School Care,

The drama
Dead Normal (formerly "Dead Gorgeous")

http://tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/Dead_Gorgeous/

and the animated series
CJ the DJ.

The ABC has set a goal of 50 per cent
Australian content by 2013, when television
switches from analog to digital.

''The key defining feature about this channel
is that it's going to be Australian it's going
to have an Australian feel and look, and a high
level of Australian programming, which we will
build over time,'' MrDalton said. ''Our
long-term aim is for 50 per cent of the content
broadcast on ABC3 to be Australian, but due to
the nature of drama and animation production,
it will take time to reach this target.''

ABC2 will expand its service for pre-schoolers
by 90 minutes a day, and ABC1's children's
content will be highlights from the other
two channels.

'Alice In Wonderland' Effects Supervisor
Details Tim Burton's Vision'

Tim just has a take on it in his head that
is unlike anybody that I know,' Michael
Lantieri tells MTV News.
By Eric Ditzian

Since the early 20th-century, silent-film
version of Lewis Carroll's 1865 book "Alice's
Adventures in Wonderland," there has been no
shortage of cinematic, animated, musical and
made-for-TV adaptations of Alice's legendary
trip down the rabbit hole. Tim Burton and his
partner in big-screen head trips, Johnny Depp,
are the latest to take on the beloved
children's book.

On Monday (June 22), USA Today released the
first eye-popping images from their 2010 movie,
and MTV News recently spoke with the
special-effects supervisor on the film, Michael
Lantieri, about how Burton's edition will be t
ruly unique.

"Tim just has a take on it in his head that is
unlike anybody that I know," Lantieri said.

The USA Today pictures show Depp as an
orange-haired, white-faced Mad Hatter, Helena
Bonham Carter as the Red Queen with a high
forehead and tons of pale-blue eye shadow, and
Anne Hathaway as the peroxide-blond White Queen.
Burton's take on "Alice" follows the curious
child now that she's 17 years old and has
forgotten her original adventure in Wonderland.
Australian actress Mia Wasikowska (HBO's
"In Treatment") plays the title role.

"There is something real, honest and sincere
about her," producer Richard Zanuck told USA
Today about the actress. "She's not a typical
Hollywood starlet."

According to Lantieri, the decision to update
the story with an older Alice was not the only
tricky determination that filmmakers had to
make. "There were discussions over everything,
including, 'Is it OK for the caterpillar to
smoke?' " he told us, referring to the iconic
scene in which Alice encounters the insect
chilling on a mushroom and puffing on a hookah.
"You'd be surprised how big a discussion that
was and how they solve it."

Another innovation for this newest "Alice" is
the introduction of 3-D, and Lantieri maintains
that we've never seen the technology used the
way Burton does it in this film. "I think that's
really gonna be something to look at," Lantieri
said, declining to go into further detail.
"His vision and his take on things — I never get
tired of it. If you can only imagine."

Famous Oz rock song 'Down Under'
accused of plagiarism

Australian rock band Men at Work have been
accused of plagiarising their 1980s hit
Down Under from a popular Girl Guide ditty.

A music publisher in Sydney has claimed in a
law suit that the flute solo in Down Under was
copied from the children's classic Kookaburra
Sits in The Old Gum Tree, composed by Marion
Sinclair, a Melbourne music teacher, in 1934.

Lawyers for Larrikin Music are sueing Sony BMG,
EMI and the two writers of Down Under - Colin
Hay and Ron Strykert. They allege that the song
reproduced "a substantial part" of Ms Sinclair's
composition without permission or the payment
of royalties.

The rock song, which describes Australia as a
place "where beer does flow and men chunder
(vomit)", became the unofficial national anthem
of Australia during the early 1980s and has
featured prominently at major sporting events
such as the 1983 Americas Cup and the 2000
Sydney Olympics. A far cry from Ms Sinclair's
innocent children's song, Down Under celebrates
the life of an Australian hippie who explores
the world with the help of beer and Vegemite
sandwiches.

Counsel for Sony BMG, EMI and the two band
members dispute that the claim that Larrikin
ever legally owned the copyright to Kookaburra
Sits in The Old Gum Tree. They claim that
the publishing rights were given to the Girl
Guide Association of Victoria as part of a
song competition in the 1930s.

Larrikin Music says that it acquired copyright
to the Kookaburra song in 1990. It launched
legal action in 2007 after the issue was raised
in a popular television show about popular music.

Business of conquering minds

THE broader economy may be in the doldrums,
but that has not stopped the pre-school sector
from flourishing. Just ask David Chiem, founder,
chairman and group CEO of education services
provider MindChamps Holdings. His company sold
22 franchises for its pre-school - even before
it had a school to show.

At a price of $65,000 - not including set-up
costs like rental and teachers' salaries that
each franchisee has to fork out - the feat is
not to be sneezed at. 'Even though we didn't
have a model, we had an incredible curriculum,'
says Mr Chiem. 'And with the branding we already
have, I think people trusted us.'

Mr Chiem is no stranger to overcoming long odds.
Listening to his story, you cannot help but marvel
at his life experiences, which could be the plot
for an inspirational drama.

At the age of nine, he fled Vietnam with his family
when the country was being overtaken by the
communists. Through sheer luck, the boat they were
in evaded a pirate attack because of a passing
Singapore container ship, whose staff later gave
the refugees so much chicken rice they had
leftovers when they landed in Malaysia.

'This is why Singapore always has a special place
in my heart,' says Mr Chiem.

The family ended up in Australia. And even though
Mr Chiem could not speak a word of English at first,
he topped his class in six months. Later, in senior
high school, he graduated top of his cohort in
English, art and maths.

The turning point in his life came at the age of 13,
when his sister heard an audition call over the
radio. 'It said, 'Looking for 13- or 14-year-old
Asian boy, must be able to swim',' says Mr Chiem.
'Back then, I couldn't swim. But when my sister
heard it on the radio, she said, 'Why not you?'

'She said it as a joke but when I went to bed
that night, that line was in my head - 'Why not
me?' I just kept on asking that question.
I thought if it isn't, that's OK. I'll just give
it my best shot. If I don't give it my best shot,
I won't know.'

So he learned to swim - and became the first Asian
to get a leading part in an Australian TV series,
called Butterfly Island. But that was only the
beginning of his story. The experience taught him
the power of having a positive and open mind.

'I just thought that to live a life without
realising the full potential is one of the saddest
things to do,' he says. 'For me, the question of
why not me is a powerful question. What I realised
was, the quality of the questions you ask yourself
at a non-conscious level play a critical role. Just
that one question led me to believe and pursue my
dreams.'

Mr Chiem was so enthusiastic about the TV role that
he called the casting director regularly to ask
whether a decision had been taken.

'I'd make sure I had a 20-cent coin and as soon
as the school bell rang, I'd run to the nearest
public phone and call to ask if they had made
their decision,' says Mr Chiem. 'They'd say, 'No,
not yet, call back on Friday'. And on Friday,
I'd ring them up on the dot and they'd say,
'Call back on Monday'.

'So every time they said to call, I called.
Frank, the director said that by the time he
heard that story, the decision was made -
'You and this other boy are just as good as
each other, but if your mind is that strong on
wanting to make it happen, it's yours'.'

This notion was to become one of the
fundamental elements for MindChamps, a training
institute that thrives on teaching students
what it calls the 'champion mindset'.
Incorporating neuroscience research done by
academic and author Allan Snyder of the
University of Sydney, MindChamps espouses
'how to learn' rather than 'what to learn'.

The company roped in experienced educators and
theatre practitioners to come up with programmes
that engage students and help them focus. As Mr
Chiem points out, the cinema world has always
engaged the non-conscious mind to communicate.
One of MindChamps' notions is to leverage on that
art to deliver its programmes. 'So content is not
the issue,' explains Mr Chiem, who studied acting
at the prestigious Theatre Nepean in New South
Wales. 'We have to upgrade the software of how to
engage students' minds to teach the content, so
the content becomes a part of them, not drilled by
rote so much that they hate it.

'If kids hate learning, we have a problem, because
in the 21st century world you've got to keep
learning, un-learning and re-learning. Because what
you just learned, in two years' time, may be obsolete.'

Although MindChamps was conceptualised in Australia
in 1998, the business was started in Singapore in
2002, as Mr Chiem saw Singapore as a more appropriate
launchpad to target the Asian market, which places a
high emphasis on education. Since then, its specialist
school has expanded to Hong Kong, where a wholly
owned subsidiary employs 11 staff. In Malaysia, it
has a partnership with an international school in
Kuala Lumpur, offering specialist programmes.

The decision to enter the pre-school market was driven
by a desire to expand the applications of research
findings.

'In our research, we realised that for a lot of gaps
in primary and secondary years, the roots can be
found in pre school,' says Mr Chiem. 'For example,
when a kid is at pre-school, they love to learn,
but when they go to primary school sometimes they
could end up having a negative relationship with
learning. If we can build the love of learning and
nurture the positive relationship to learning,
children will take that love for learning into
primary school, and half the battle is won.'

Although MindChamps has sold 22 franchises for
its pre-school, revenue from the sales cannot
be booked until a franchisee has signed the tenant
lease for a target site. By the end of this year,
Mr Chiem expects to have 12 pre-schools, including
the first outlet that opened at HDB Hub last year
and two that were recently opened by franchisees
on the East Coast and at Tampines.

So confident is he about the pre-school sector
that Mr Chiem expects that business unit to be
listed in about five years. But growth in the
pre-school market depends on the availability of
qualified teachers. So MindChamps plans to take a
stake in a teaching academy to offer diploma and
graduate diploma programmes in pre-school and
early childhood teaching.

'We could do that ourselves but it might take a
year to get all the licences,' says Mr Chiem. 'So
we're negotiating an M&A now. If the deal goes
through, the academy will come under our brand.'

Although the pre-school market remains buoyant,
MindChamp's specialist school has been affected by
the economic downturn, with student numbers falling
some 20 per cent this year.

Fortunately, the company has been preparing for the
launch of two new business units. Early this year,
it introduced school workshops for teachers and
students, aimed at developing life skills such as
leadership and team building, creativity and time
management. Another new arm, MindSpace, offers
after-school care services, including homework
and life coaching.

With so many new businesses, MindChamps will be
focusing on the Singapore market this year. 'I
think next year is the year when we will take the
franchise to the region,' he says, adding that the
target markets will be Malaysia, Thailand,
Indonesia, Vietnam and China.

But he hesitates to forecast if this year will be
a profitable one, in lieu of investments being made.
'As a group, I would say in 2010 it will be a total
turnaround because of new units like Hong Kong,
the pre-school and new franchisees opening,' he
says. 'That will be our very strong year. Now, we h
ave no gearing at all.'

Asked about a recent investment exit by Hong Leong
Group, Mr Chiem says the parting is due to the two
organisations having very different perspectives
on education.

'Like in a marriage, when the vision is not aligned,
it's best that both parties move forward, and we are
very happy that we came to an amicable decision,'
he says.

Lauren Brant, and Fely Irvine. Maddren, Brant and
Irvine are fresh faces who joined the group early this
year while Nicholson joined in 2007 and Burgess joined
last year.

While they were in Kuala Lumpur recently to plug their
concert, they performed two very energetic songs –
Monster Dance and Zoo Party – which hinted at what they
have to offer in their upcoming show here.

Expressing excitement at making their world premiere in
Malaysia, Maddren said it "would be a really fun
programme."

Nicholson added: "It's beautiful here in Malaysia and
we're all big kids at heart, so we'll have a great
time."

Irvine revealed that the theme for their show is a
surprise birthday party for their friend Chats –
with lots of singing, dancing and party games.

While the five all exhibit vibrant personalities,
clearly reflected in bright and colourful clothes
they wear on the show, for Nicholson in particular
this even extends to his personal wardrobe.

Relating an incident whereby a handyman was
surprised by his colourful wardrobe while fixing
his cupboard, Nicholson piped: "He asked if I were
a clown. I told him those were my normal clothes."

While working on a children's programme requires
them to maintain an upbeat outlook, Brant said it
was not difficult to do so as "the energy from the
children is very contagious."

Although, it has already been 10 years since Hi-5
began educating and entertaining children, Burgess
said the show remains relevant as they constantly
ask themselves what kids today enjoy. "It's not
hard as we're surrounded by kids – our nephews
and nieces."

The five friends

Where are you going to live now, Skip?

THE popular northern beaches wildlife park
where Skippy The Bush Kangaroo was filmed
has not had a licence for the care of its
100-plus native animals since 2006 and looks
likely to close permanently after the
intervention of the State Government and the
RSPCA.

Waratah Park Earth Sanctuary, the 13-hectare
Duffys Forest site that was home to Skippy in
the 1960s, has been closed for nearly two years,
apparently for renovation.

But concern has grown about the animals' welfare
and last week the RSPCA had to put down two
emaciated kangaroos. "The animals were put down o
n welfare grounds. They were emaciated, weak,"
said NSW RSPCA's chief inspector, David O'Shannessy.

"We're still investigating whether neglect was a
contributing factor but we do have concerns about
the welfare of animals at the park."

The company leasing the site from the state, the
Melbourne property developer Prudentia Investments,
has not had a licence for the animals since it took
over three years ago.

According to the Department of Environment and
Climate Change, Prudentia failed to renew the licence
after it acquired the lease in 2006, refusing to
undertake basic site works.

"The requirements for renewing the licence were things
like providing adequate fencing, weed management and
an overall site plan," a spokeswoman said.

The department says all the animals, which cannot
survive in the wild, will have to be moved to other
wildlife parks, which residents say would mean the
end of the park and could result in a mass culling.

"What concerns me is that the animals are going to be
shot because they won't be able to find alternative
homes for them," a resident, Mandy Beaumont, said.
"Why didn't the Government step in and cancel the
lease earlier if Prudentia didn't have a licence?"

Residents believe Prudentia has let the site run
down because it intends to build houses there.

A spokesman refused to comment on Prudentia's plans
but said that other than the recent death of two
kangaroos, there were "no other issues that we are
presently aware of in relation to health and
wellbeing of any other animals".

The company was not aware that it needed a licence
for the animals when the park was closed, he said.

Is High School Musical a bad influence on teens?

LITTLE girls should not watch the likes of High School Musical or Hannah Montana
until their early teens, an expert says.

Clinical psychologist Rita Princi said girls and boys were being exposed to
things such as sexy music videos, women's magazines and teenage concepts way too
young.

This included teen-themed movies and TV shows such as High School Musical and
Hannah Montana, huge among 6 to 8-year-olds, and suggestive music videos shown
on weekend mornings.

Ms Princi said watching and reading things meant for an older audience had
contributed to girls as young as six dieting and teen boys using steroids to
build the "six pack" physique of male stars.

"They're . . . attracted to the way the girls are dressed or believe that's the
way you're supposed to act around boys," she said.

"Girls as young as six years desire a thinner body and have awareness of
dieting.

"We're seeing more boys wanting to have this perfect ideal body as well."

Ms Princi, whose practice is in Adelaide, will today tell a seminar by Kids Free
2B Kids and the Australian Council on Children and the Media that parents must
say no when children want something they are not ready for.

She said research also showed parents played a big part in exposure to concepts
which could damage their self-esteem, by commenting on their weight or not
filtering inappropriate media.

Child-appropriate media like ABC Kids, however, did not cause such problems.

"The more exposed they are to the media and through their parents, the more at
risk they were," she said.

"In particular, watching music videos and looking at magazines, especially if
younger girls have access to their mother's or older sisters' magazines, (can
lead to) lower self-esteem and poorer body image.

"The strong influence of parents' dieting behaviours and parental comments about
their pre-adolescent children's bodies, especially for daughters . . . also
places them at risk."

Melbourne University Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics researcher
Dr Cordelia Fine will tell the seminar that older children are just as
influenced by advertising as those under 11.

She said research showed older children, whom many assumed would be more savvy
and sceptical, were still under the spell of marketers.

"This means that resisting the marketing involves a very different set of
psychological tools than traditionally assumed," she said.

Rebecca, 8, has loved High School Musical and Hannah Montana for about two
years.

She saw all three HSM movies, went to the HSM Ice Tour and watches Hannah
Montana on TV. She also has T-shirts, DVDs, books, posters, pyjamas, a dance mat
and blanket featuring either Hannah Montana or her HSM heroes. But she doesn't
dress like them and shows no interest in boys - yet.

The Kids Free 2B Kids and the Australian Council on Children and the media
seminar today will discuss the premature sexualisation of children.

Subject: Wiggle room: Australia's color-coded kid rockers invade Coliseum
modelpower2006
Send Email Send Email

In the world of kids, the Wiggles make up the fab four.
They will be bringing their moves and their music to
the U.S. Cellular Coliseum on Wednesday. (

From Cockroaches to Wiggles: No one can say it's been
a long, dull crawl for Australia's Anthony Field, one-
quarter of his homeland's highest-grossing music group.

No, scratch that: highest-grossing entertainers. Period.

With Russ Crowe, Nicole Kidman, Mel Gibson and all the
other Down Under ex-pats eating their yellow/red/purple/
blue dust.

In fact, these high-grossers, The Wiggles, have been
part of the Aussie entertainment landscape for close to
two decades.

But it's only been in the past half decade or so that
the color-coded, high-octane rock quartet has invaded
the states.

They've done it chiefly through their high-profile
programming on the Disney Channel, followed by some
serious touring with their live show - the one coming
to Bloomington's U.S. Cellular Coliseum at 6:30 p.m.
Wednesday.

Field, a former straight-ahead rocker in the Aussie
band the Cockroaches, has been Wiggling 'round the
world with no regrets since the early '90s.

And he's been seeing the color blue every twist and
turn of the way - per his designation as, yes, the
Blue Wiggle (as opposed to his mates Murray, who sees
Red; Jeff, who dreams Purple; and Sam, who espies
Yellow).

The whole thing began as a lark, says Field, a full-
blown adult now in his mid-'40s, but with the high-
octane energy reserves of the average 5-year-old in
his audience.

The Sydney native began his musical life as a nun-
taught violinist, which couldn't compete with the
Rolling Stones-style guitar taught him by his big
bro' John.

The result of that latter tutelage: the aforementioned
Cockroaches, featuring the brothers Field and future
Purple Wiggle Jeff Fatt.

The group managed to become one of Australian's chart-
topping '80s bands. So why in the world would Anthony
and Jeff defect for something aimed at a demographic
in single digits?

It didn't hurt that Field had long harbored an interest
in education, especially where kids are concerned.

"Yeah, we had a bit of commercial success (as the
Cockroaches), but we're still basically doing the
same music now, only with different lyrics," he says.

That "early bit of commercial success" has, of
course, been compounded many times over via the
Wiggles and those "different lyrics."

Creatively, the interest has been compounded, too,
he says.

"Children are more open to music, and not just
what's on the radio," Field notes, adding that the
Wiggles have been able to weave every kind of sound,
from country to jazz to "songs from the Pacific
Islands," without being hooted off stage.

"I know we couldn't have done that as a 'normal'
rock 'n' roll band," he says. "So this has been
liberating for me."

He doesn't regret his days as a Cockroach, and
everything that went with it. "I was in my 20s,
and I was meeting women, and partying all the
time - that whole lifestyle. But I got married and
had a bit of a family ... and that slowed me down."

Back in the early '90s, before kid-centric TV and
live tour shows had became a mass market industry,
"there were no four-man rock bands doing children's
entertainment," he says.

Now, of course, they're everywhere, including,
Field wryly observes, on the Disney Channel, where
the Wiggles have been supplanted by Disney's own
house variation on the theme, the Imagination Movers.

In the beginning, "we used to be on three times a
day, then it was down to one time a day, even
though the ratings were still big. It became harder
for people to see us."

The bottom line: "Disney looked at us and said, 'we
didn't create them, why should we put them on our
TV station?'"

No matter, says Field: The Wiggles will wriggle away
from Disney to the PBS Kids Sprout network, effective
Aug. 24, where they're being handed the prime 6-to-9
a.m. morning block on a platter.

Heck, why not just call it the Wiggles Channel? Field
laughs, and notes that he and his color-coded mates
will host the three-hour block in new segments,
introducing other series programming as well as
hosting retrospectives of their past shows.

Meanwhile, there's the current summer tour, "Wiggles
Go Bananas Live!," coming to town via the Coliseum
Wednesday, replete with all the orbiting Wiggles
regulars: Captain Feathersword, Dorothy the Dinosaur,
Henry the Octopus, Wags the Dog and the Wiggly Dancers.

The one doing gymnastics across the stage will likely
be Field, usually beating up the drums, flipping this
way and that, or hanging upside down from somewhere.

He describes it as the Wiggles meets Cirque du Soleil.

Only with better colors.

THE ABC is on the hunt for ideas for a
new children's TV series to be filmed in Perth
and screened on its digital ABC3 channel.

The ABC has formed a joint venture with ScreenWest
and the Australian Children's Television Foundation
to fund a 13-episode children's situation comedy
series.

Each episode will be 15 minutes.

"We're looking for bold ideas and fresh situations,
with interesting and engaging characters that a
10-14 year old audience can relate to," ScreenWest
Chief Executive Ian Booth said.

"We want laugh out loud humour that appeals to
this audience."

WA Culture and Arts Minister John Day welcomed
the news.

"This is a unique opportunity for WA writers,
producers, directors, crew and actors," he said.

The JV will initially provide up to $60,000 to
develop up to three projects before one is selected
to go into production.

The JV will commit a total of $1 million to the
project.

Potential WA applicants are invited to an information
session on 18 August 2009. For further details
contact ScreenWest on (08) 9224 7340 or visit ScreenWest

Littles ones will `Go Bananas'

The Wiggles bring world tour to Grand Rapids Thursday

GRAND RAPIDS -- They are the world's biggest preschool band, with a tour
entourage that includes 30 cast and crew, buses and elaborate costumes. When The
Wiggles were starting out, they used to be just four guys in a van.

``It was kind of a hobby when we started,'' said Murray Cook, the ``Red
Wiggle,'' calling from a tour stop in California. The group will bring its ``Go
Bananas'' tour this Thursday to DeVos Performance Hall in Grand Rapids. ``There
were just the four of us (Greg Page, Jeff Fatt and Anthony Field) in a van, and
I played Dorothy the Dinosaur, too.''

Eighteen years after The Wiggles' inauspicious launch, the whole world is wigged
out for the foursome, now on a world tour with their live show. One can download
Wiggles ringtones on their mobile phones, and there are ``Wiggles World''
sections in theme parks from New Jersey to Queensland, Australia, the band's
homeland.

``It's hard to know why we've been successful,'' said Cook, 49. ``Maybe it's
because, partly, Anthony and I have backgrounds in early childhood education. We
have a way of talking to children without talking down to them. Children
recognize that. And we love what we are doing, and that's infectious for
children and parents.''

They began as buskers, playing to outdoor crowds at Circular Quay in Sydney,
and, promoted by a nursing mother's group, had their first non-busking
performance at a preschool. Building their reputation from there, the group
first appeared on Australian TV, and by 1999 crossed the world over to appear on
the Disney Channel. Their videos and CDs have sold millions of copies.

``It really took off then,'' Cook said. ``The people in America have always been
open to new things. American audiences are really the best.''

Cook, a native of a small country town Down Under called Cowra, ``played in
bands that were unsuccessful'' before jamming for the jammie set, and has no
regrets.

``It's still wonderful to play for audiences that are so excited to see us,'' he
said. ``You see it in the children's faces -- it's such a joy. Our shows are
often their first concerts.''

A Wiggles show is more than pint-sized pop, however.

``We are really a combination of a rock `n' roll show, a Broadway show and the
circus,'' the father of two young teens said. ``There's lots of dances and
acrobatics, music and fun.''

Rolling across America in luxe tour buses, Cook and his Wiggle amigos have a
front row seat to vistas from East to West.

``We think America is beautiful,'' he said. ``Americans are so warm and
friendly, and they really do get on well with us Australians.''
