John,

I thought that if we got enough people, I could just hook people up
with partners or something. I dunno. I'm game for just sending some
American treats (or some bit of American culture) to whomever wants
them, olympics be damned.

Well, that's pretty good, Katie,

Of course you are far above presidential material.

However, you might add a few box kicks and add a Xena
yell to the mwah ha ha. After all folks must think
you are seriously bad.

Battle on!

You don't think I'm seriously bad? Darn it! I thought that evil laugh
would do it!

I'm glad you think that I'm above presidential material but that's
not difficult! I think that Xena would make an excellent president.
Her campaign slogan could be:

"Vote Xena for President or else I'll kick your ass!"

That ought to have the votes rolling in!

Cheers,

~Katie :)

I just thought of a better campaign slogan for Xena:

Vote Xena for President or I'll burn down your village!

Cheers,

Xena would bloody well get my vote! Wouldn't she just
show up those present candidates though? What a blast
to see her kickassing her way past them in the
debates! Bodies flying all over the place. Yiiii
yiiiii yiiii!

Xena: "I have many kills, what's one more politician?"

Here it is 7:55 in the AM and I got your reply almost
before I sent my post. This internet sure beats the
carrier pigeon.

Hey Katie,

Check this out. I found it awhile back.

http://www.gendergappers.org/1999-035.htm

You'll love the pix at the beginning and may find some
of the article boring, but at least skim through it
and read the ending. Xena's already been nominated.

That's definitely one petition I would sign! The only problem would
be if Ares finally convinced Xena to return to her old ways and she
made us her slaves. Sigh... then we'd be back in the same position we
are now!

And the Demogrogs and Repugnants? <lol!> I am fascinated by American
politics. Australian government has never seen such controversy!

Cheers,

Ive also been to Brazil but unfortunately not for sixteen months just for 6
weeks but it was WELL worth it. I spent a bit of time in Rio, Iguzu Falls
(which are totally one of the most magnificent things I have ever seen) and
the rest of my time travelling up the Rio Negro on a small boat.......the
Amazon is just amazing......you have to go there before they cut it all down
for the UK and Germany for their furniture and paper (they are the two
biggest purchesors of Brazlilian Rainforest material, makes me mad). If your
going to Sth America you HAVE to go to Peru as well such atmosphere!

NEVER apologise for joining in a conversation thats what we are all here
for, the more opinions the better!!! Oh and please don't think that us
Australians thing ALL Americans are loud and rude and whatever because of
course we dont. We were all just discussing common misconceptions about
each others countries. I know a lot of Americans think all Aussies are slow
dimwitted crocodile dundee types when of course that is no where near the
truth. Every person in every country is an individual with very different
personality traits. The only thing wrong with Americans is the way you
spell colour and mum.....*laughing*.

Very high. Anywhere from 70 to 100%. I'm afraid that we are what is
considered "landlocked", but there are many lakes within 2 hours of here.
Kansas City temps have broken records here these past 2 days. 109 degrees
F yesterday and 105 the day before. Lord only knows what it will be today.
  I'm staying inside. Air-conditioning is good. :)

RPG stands for role-playing game, and for anyone not familiar with the
concept it is an interactive, improvisational, creation and telling of a
story. A group of people get together and create imaginary characters and
role-play through a story- guided by one individual (called a dungeon
master, a story teller, game master etc.) who is sort of in charge of what
happens in the setting. The characters interact with the given setting and
grow over time. A good rpg can be the best of reading a book, playing a
video game, writing a story, acting out a story, telling a story, and is the
closest thing I believe one can come to living the type of adventures we all
dream about. If you really make an effort and take sort of serioussly it is
an incredible experiance. I remember people I know saying it sounded
stupid, and many of them became avid gamers after just watching a game. The
imagination is the single most powerful tool we as human beings can weild,
and an rpg is a good example of the potential we have all the time.

Imagine you are going to be a new character on Xena. The producers call you
up and you have won some contest, and you have to create the character you
are going to play on the show. You get out some paper and write down all
the things you want this character to be. You pick what s/he wears, where
s/he is from in the setting, his/her background, what weapons s/he fights
with, anything you can come up with to make a good character. You call up
the producers and say you are ready, and they say they want to see how you
fit in before they shoot, so they get Lucy Lawless and all the rest of the
cast and bring them to your house. (better get all those clothes off the
floor) They say they want to do an improv, just to test the waters and see
how your character fits in. One of the writers of Xena comes allong and
says he will take some of the shows he has been thinking about doing and
describe the opening scenes, the setting, and he will play all the other
characters in the show (they didn't have enough time to get the extras or
villains to come too). You describe your character to the writer a bit, and
he figures out how to work you in to the story. He puts you in a village
somewhere that is being attacked by some evil warlord. Xena and everyone
jump out to beat the crap out of them, and your character jumps in to help.
You take out a few out with such grace you that catch Xena's eye- she is
impressed and she asks you if you will join them. You think about it (Im
sure it is a very dificult decision to make) and then you all go off to
fight more evil. The writer describes what happens in all of the upcoming
episodes, what the places and people look like, and also acts out the parts
of everyone that isn't represented by the present cast (in your living
room), while the rest of you portray what your characters do and say
throughout the rest of the shows. Lucy orders some pizza after a while, and
5 hours later (and about 4 episodes worth of material later) they all agree
you fit in just fine.

This is a perfect axample of what a good RPG could be. (except normally you
wouldn't get paid or anything) There are systems you use to decide how
things like combat or special abilitie like magic go, and any other detail
can be worked out. Generally dice are used, just like to see how far your
thimbol goes in Monopoly.

Most games give you lots of ideas for different types of characters. In
AD&D, you can choose from lots of character classes. Warriors, magic users,
thieves, bards, clerics (priests with magic abilities) etc.

You can do anything, go anywhere, be anyone you want. The things you learn
about are endless, not to mention knowing what it feels like to be in the
middle of an epic battle or to save someone frm a powerful foe, just like in
movies or books, or of course like on TV.

You might find it amusing to know that we Brits think it's funny that you call American football, football, because you use your hands more than your feet! Your game is very similar to our rugby. Most of Europe call it football, I think the word soccer is used more in the USA. And I totally agree that the English are very passionate about football. It's a way of life for most people, I can't quite describe it, people take the results of matches very personally.

>>>I also heard that a lot of Brits don't like the royal family?  Australians hate them but you would never know based on the fact that some old buggers voted against the replublic and we are stuck with you Brits <<<

:). I think about 70% of the country can't stand the Royal Family, because they get payed our hard earned cash just to do nothing and live in luxury. The Royals are more favoured by the upper class society, the ordinary working class like myself feel cheated by them.

Katie:
>>>Are you trying to tell me that Neighbours doesn't portray Aussie's in

LOL, Neighbours potrays Aussies as really melodramatic; the most excitement per episode is Bob the dog running away and the whole neighbourhood turning out for a full scale search!:)

On the other hand, have you ever seen EastEnders? It makes all Londoners look like murderers, drug dealers or just really depressing! But Neighbours is the second most watched programme on BBC1 here in the UK, so the Neighbours cast are the only example of Austrailians that people have to go by. (What a thought!:)

And just to chip in, Toad In The Hole is very nice, it's just sausages encased in some batter. Not as sickly as it sounds! Goes great with some roast potatoes and brussel sprouts:)

I have to agree with Lex on the Football thing.  American Football is played mostly by hand, very much like Rugby, but not as dangerous.  However Soccer is Football.  I grew up in England (Dad was Air Force) and I still think of Soccer as being Football, it just makes more sense.  Plus, I'd much rather watch that than American Football any day.

Helen,

You weren't at fault, Napster was.  Basically, they had full albums that you could download the music and make your own copies onto a cd, if you have a cd burner that is.  However, because it was free, the artists (and most importantly to the lawsuit) the record companies were not getting any royalty fees for the downloads.  In other words, no need to sell the cd's anymore, you could get them for free.  Which is why it was shut down.

Hello my name is Annie and i have napster! And for the legal stuff i got just
one thing to say! When you go to a bar and you put money in the juckbox to
listen to a song does the owner of the bar pays for the royalties? And if
you read on a cd cover(here in canada anyway)it says that you can't play the
cd in public! Is it more legal than napster? i DON'T think so!And you can
find a lot of xena music on it!Bye bye for now!Annie Turcotte

Jukeboxes have cd's or in old fashioned times, 45's that had been paid for.  Which is why it is legal.  Anytime a song is sung in a public place and recorded, a royalty has to be paid.  Which is why jukeboxes are legal, they paid for the cd, and no one is recording the song over.  However, if someone plays a song on a tv show, they have to pay a royalty fee to the record company since the show is recorded.  The WB has helped themselves by actively promoting the cd's that the music they use in any of their shows at the end of the episode.  This way, they are probably not paying a fee, but giving free advertising instead.

Napster consisted of songs by major artists that people could download and then burn their own cd's from the downloads.  Therefore, you could conceivably record all the songs from your favorite artist's new cd, then burn it on a cd you bought for $2 and the artist and the record company doesn't get a dime from it.  This is why it was shut down.

Napster has a great system for finding and downloading mp3's.  They just don't pay royalty fees to the record companies.  Yes, record companies have a lot of money, but if a new artist comes out and people like them, yet don't buy their album.  That artist wouldn't be able to continue on.  So there has to be some give and take in the whole MP3 deal.

Plus, records for as long as I remember have always stated that only a copy for personal use can be made, not for public consumption.  What MP3's do is let you make a copy for yourself, but then hand it out to everyone else as well.  Whether you agree or not, this is illegal.

I actually liked Neighours and Eastenders. It was
cool to see Martin Kemp in a show. He's still hot,
after all those years since Spandau. Since I don't
get to see those programmes in the US, I was totally
excited to see them. I still consider myself an 80's
chick. I read all those teeny bopper mags with Kylie
and the rest of the gang. I miss watching the
shows-and I hate soap operas.

Anyways, I went to my fav bookstore and they had they
2001 calanders out-they actually had the new Xena
calander out--just for your information.

And...the new Woman's World, a US weekly paper has a
small picture and quote from Lucy Lawless, "Just
because a woman is strong, doesn't mean she isn't
feminine." It is nice to see her in our weekly
papers. I know that she is in the New Zealand or
Aussie weekly papers more often than in the US.
