This is the Observers comments for this week:
This week on Idol…
The one and only Diana Ross came to mentor the contestants. My prayer was
that she was coming with some replacement contestants, but that was not the
case. Let me start by saying that I respect Ms. Ross and her accomplishments,
but I have never really been overly impressed with her vocal abilities. Ok that
being said, I would have preferred to hear her sing on Tuesday instead of more
than half the contestants. What a dismal night and clearly some of the
contestants should have switched songs with each other.
Brandon started off with a background version of “You Can’t Hurry Love”. I
am clear out of suggestions for Brandon. He is just not going to rise to the
occasion and come out of his harmony mode. He just doesn’t have the vocal
ability to hold anyone’s attention he has limited range and imagination. The
best he can hope for is next season to become the fourth background singer for
the show. Actually, the three current background singers Kenya Hathaway
(daughter of Donny Hathaway), Sy Smith (a solo artist herself) and the other
girl, whose name I keep forgetting are all SUPERB, so he won’t fit back there
either.
Melinda was up next and honestly there were some vocal tips she could have
probably given Diana. What a professional. She took a risk and chose to sing
“Home” I say risk because the song is written for a higher voice than she has,
but being the professional that she is, she pulled it off. I think I would have
preferred her on “God Bless The Child” for I feel she would have really
displayed great depth, but nevertheless Melinda delivers.
Chris Sligh. decided to take creative control over “Endless Love” and
created the blandest version imaginable. I applaud him for the initiative, but
I want to shave him bald for the result. Where do I begin? I am almost certain
I caught a few of the musicians napping while they were playing. No vocal
inflictions used at all it’s like he caught the monotone disease that sent
Jared packing. It was quite a disappointing effort. I think he should have
pulled from his comic bag and put on a dress for the female part. Hey it works
for Tyler Perry.
When they said Gina was about to do “Love Child”, I was like cool she
should be able to rock this one. Rocking chair is what it turned out to be. I
can’t even remember one exciting moment from the performance. She wasn’t bad;
she just wasn’t much of anything.
Of all the voices represented, I would dare say that Sanjaya’s is the
closes to Diana’s in terms of texture and volume. Too bad he did not take
advantage of this. What can I say about this kid that hasn’t already been said?
I suggest he show up next week, yes much too many people’s dismay he will be
back next week, and simply smile for two minutes. Just stand there and smile
for his smile is infectious his singing causes ear infections. Not because it’s
bad but because you have to strain your ears to hear him. He sang “Ain’t No
Mountain High Enough” but truly we all know it was “Ain’t No Microphone Strong
Enough”.
Haley sang “Missing You” will anyone miss her when she is sent home? She
also missed some words. Bad choice of song I was hoping she would do the theme
from “Mahogany-Do You Know Where You’re Going Too.” It’s light and airy and
would have fit her voice. Well we all know where she’s going too. She was
thrilled that the judges said nice things and that Simon remembered her name.
If Haley “misses” getting sent home then the arrow might hit Phil. He sang
“I’m Going To Make You Love Me”. I guess the guys were at a disadvantage this
being Diana week and maybe this was the right song for him, but the problem I
have with Phil that I always have is the fact that I never know what he is
singing until he gets to the chorus. A friend was watching the show with me and
I asked him what is this song and he was about to tell me then the chorus came
and I knew it, because I knew it in the original tempo. What reason would he
have to change the tempo?
I think I might be one of the few people who have yet to climb on the
Lakisha bandwagon, probably because I think she is being used by Idol to make
some sort of odd apology toward Jennifer Hudson. I don’t know, but I have yet
to be impressed with her and her version of “God Bless The Child” was infused
with more vocal gimmicks than Diana has wigs and ball gowns. To make matters
worse the gimmicks were oddly placed. She started off with a very poor Billie
Holiday impersonation and then decided to through in some Luther Vandross type
“ooohs” I was confused. Maybe she should ask Kenya for Lalah Hathaway’s number
for some tips.
The confusion continued when Blake decided that he was going to turn the
competition into a producer one instead of a singing one. He fed “Keep me
Hangin On” through his computer to “update” the sound but failed to “update”
the vocals. I would have settled for the older version with better vocals. The
band rocked. Thanks Blake, maybe he can produce Sanjaya’s next performance.
Stephanie is a talented young lady and made the artistic decision to leave
out the up-tempo portion of “Love Hangover” ok Stephanie I know what you were
attempting to do, but sometimes you just have to give the people what they
want. The song is nothing without the up-tempo segment. If you wanted to do a
ballad you should have chose one. She could have really did well with this if
she would have did just one slow verse and then went into the up-tempo. Yes,
there is not a lot of singing in the fast part but no one would have cared. A
few well placed “oohs” and “yeahs” (see Lakisha’s bag of tricks) and it would
have went over well. Those who knew the song were ready to dance, heck Paula
was already half way out of her seat and ready to kick up her legs.
Chris Richardson brought on the fast tune with “The Boss” and I think I
have said it before, he should NEVER hold notes. His voice borders on
irritating to begin with, but when he holds notes it’s just unbearable. I am
not going to make a Justin Timberlake reference this week. Oh, darn I think I
just did.
Jordin decided to take a trip down memory lane and pick a song from her
Diana Ross era. “If We Hold On Together” from the movie “A Land Before Time”. I
never saw the movie and I have never heard this song. Sounds like it was a mega
ballad complete with lush strings and big build up. Are they sure this is a
Diana song and not a Celine song? Anyway, I wasn’t moved and Jordin just does
nothing for me.
Ok so we have to send 11 home this week, oh my bad we only have to send 1
home this week. ARGH! The bottom two will be Haley and Phil or Haley and
Brandon. Regardless, Haley will be “missing” next week.
The Results
Since the show was only an half hour they wasted no time getting to the
bottom three, but first we had to be tortured oops I mean treated to a group
performance. I now know that I will not be attending the tour this year. I sat
there waiting for at least one or two notes from Melinda; what a sad bunch. Ok
there was no surprise that Brandon and Phil were in the bottom three, but I
thought for sure they would be joined by Haley. Once again they toyed with the
nerves of poor Sanjaya. The kid is going to have post traumatic stress syndrome
after this is all over and if his hair falls out will surely be put on suicide
watch. So after Diana Ross came out and talked, oops sang; I so wanted Melinda
to grab that mic. You would think after Patti LaBelle took over a song from Ms.
Ross on TV that she would learn her lesson from passing the mic around. So
after that Sanjaya joined Brandon and Phil and Ryan sent Phil back. The shock
on his face was priceless. Brandon knew
that he didn’t have a chance against Sanjaya so he smiled his way right off
the stage as Sanjaya made his way back to his seat and curling iron. The
credits rolled and saved us from hearing Brandon again, I wonder if the
audience was saved also.
So another one bites the dust and they prepare for next week, and I prepare
to observe.
