Cast my vote for Dana! I love her, in spite of her dithering over the totally
unworthy Gordon, and even though she ditched the show just because Gordon
thought she should, a decision which both angered and depressed me because
it's something *I* probably would have done... I love her intelligence and
humor. I also love her humility, even when it manifests itself in unwarranted
insecurities. She's an incredibly complex, conflicted woman who knows she is
good at her job but has no idea that she's equally good at her life. She's
the Anti-Sally, when you think about it... <G>

Okay, folks, here it is. From http://www.etonline.com

________________________________________

ROBERT GUILLAUME, star of the critically acclaimed comedy "Sports Night" and
best known as the sharp-tongued butler Benson on the hit comedy "Soap,"
faced the fright of his life two months ago. While sitting in his dressing
room, he suffered a stroke and was rushed to the hospital. We sat down with
Robert to discuss that evening, and his positive road to recovery! Robert
Guillaume recalls what happened on the day of the stroke.

Entertainment Tonight: Well, they certainly are not shy about putting you
back to work, are they?

Robert Guillaume: No, they certainly aren't! I just came back this week --
I've only been back since Monday.

ET: How does it feel?

Robert: Wonderful. It once again puts me in a place where I know what I'm
doing from time to time.

ET: You look fantastic, your spirits are good and you're feeling fine. Let's
back up to January 14. That was the day. What do you remember?

Robert: I don't remember much except thinking after I had fallen to the
floor and couldn't get up -- you know I needed the "Clapper" or something. I
don't remember much about that day except that I was thinking, "If I could
just get down to the set, everything would be all right." I was in a massive
state of denial I suppose, because it didn't occur to me that it was a
stroke.

ET: What did it feel like?

Robert: I just felt inept. It was like I couldn't get my leg to do what I
wanted it to do. And I couldn't stand up. And the phone kept ringing because
the stage manager Sean was constantly calling me to see why I hadn't
answered his first summons to come down to the stage and start the scene.

ET: Was it painful?

Robert: No, I must say, it wasn't. And I wasn't all that aware of what it
was. I just thought it was a temporary inconvenience. And so Sean finally
came up to the door and knocked on my dressing room door and said, "Are you
all right?" And I said, "No." That was my first acknowledgment. So he opened
the door and had me sit. Then everybody came from upstairs. THOMAS SCHLAMME
["Sports Night" director] and AARON SORKIN ["Sports Night" producer and
creator] and took me over to St. Joseph's Hospital. At the hospital, the
doctor's said that they were going to have to keep me there after consulting
my internist. I said, "What do you mean, keep me here? I've got to get back
to work." He said, "I don't think so." I said, "What do you mean? I don't
know who your boss is, but my boss is MICHAEL EISNER [president of Disney]
and he takes a dim view of this kind of thing in the middle of the
afternoon. Stroke or not.

ET: The show must go on, right? So you can laugh about this now...

Robert: Well, no, I can't. But I am determined to.

ET: Was there ever a point when you thought, "I might die?" Was it ever that
serious?

Robert: No, that never occurred to me. As I was saying before, I was just
thinking, stupidly of course, "If I could get onto the set and start the
scene, everything would be all right. But of course, that was really the
height of stupidity, because it wouldn't. In retrospect, I think it felt as
if I was steadily losing energy to do anything. It wasn't necessarily
frightening. It angered me more than anything that I couldn't do what I had
set out to do. And that was one of the first times in my life that that
happened to me. I mean, I have always set out to do something and been able
to do it.

ET: Was there a point where you thought, "This could end my career?"

Robert: Yeah. Well, my career had been ended many, many times, so there was
nothing new there. But I thought, yeah. People will see me in a new light,
in a new way. But that's not necessarily bad. And of course I had my
nightmares of seeing the future cut off. I thought I'd go on forever.
Incidentally, I don't really think much about the stroke except in the times
where I won't be able to do the things that I always did. I'm having to
learn how to walk again, and it's a bit of a drag. But there is a certain
acceptance.

ET: Everything that I read about it said "suffered a mild stroke," and I
asked myself, I wonder if he feels that way? Because those words flow so
easily from another person's mouth.

Robert: No, I do. Because there were so many people in the hospital at UCLA
where they did a marvelous job of bringing me back and refusing to allow me
to get into the negative mode.

ET: What did they do to keep you out of that negative mode?

Robert: Well, they kept my butt in constant movement in speech therapy,
occupational therapy, physical therapy.

ET: Was the speech gone?

Robert: Well, no, but it wasn't the way that it was, which is one of the
reasons why I feel so very lucky. And one of the reasons was prayer helped,
because I had a lot of people praying for me.

ET: Oh, a lot. The list goes on including KATHERINE HELMOND, SIDNEY
POITIER-- they came out for you. And the cast of "Sports Night."

Robert: Oh, the cast was fantastic. And ABC has lifted a marvelous weight.
They've made it as easy for me as possible and I couldn't have asked for
more.

ET: They've wrote it into the show, I see.

Robert: Yes. My wife Donna suggested that.

ET: And they've taken a light-hearted approach to it, like talking to you
very loudly and giving you a hard time about it...

Robert: Yes. And one of the things that is really good about it and that
gives me a great thrill is that it's an opportunity to say something about a
stroke and that there is life after a stroke.

Hi everyone,

As I said yesterday, I want to keep going with my "On the air" trend for a
few days. Here's one from "The Quality of Mercy at 29K".

------- This quote is from "The Quality of Mercy at 29K"-------------
[Dan] The Olympic gold-medal winning gymnast and high school
sophomore said that after all those years of hard work, it
was a relief to finally realize her life-long dream. Good to
get that out of the way at fifteen.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

And for those of you wondering about the website and why there's not more
quotes already, here's the thing. The thing is that I'm still working some
kinks and rethinking some design related things. I'm thinking about making
the voting easier, meaning you could rate a quote on the same page as you
read it... That would get rid of the popup windows and would make the quotes
surfing even more smoother. That's what is keeping me from adding a lot of
quotes, since I don't want to have to redo everything in a week. I want to
do it right the first time around... But I'm taking notes of each and every
quote that pops up around here...

I've also implemented something to help you consult the average page. If
you are using a browser version 4 or better (MSIE or NS), just move your
mouse over the "READ IT!" link, a little caption should show up to give you
a hint of what the given quote is about. You need to see it to
understand...
http://snquotes.virtualave.net/cgi-bin/vote.pl?average

I'm also working on getting the episode-rating script done, so we'll also be
able to know which episode was the best, or most liked...

As always, your comments are welcome.
Later, Steve.

I *would* volunteer to dub for the East Coast (I'm in Washington), but both
my VCRs were STOLEN two weeks ago and I've only replaced one of them. I
think the tape train is a GREAT idea, though, and would love to participate.
Unfortunately, the only thing I have to *contribute* is the ad with Jill and
Diane from NYPD Blue. I've missed everything else. D-oh!

I agree wholeheartedly. Guys like Jeremy are great; I'm married to one
of them <g> The more classically "cute" guys are much more likely to be
jerks. And that's one of the many great things about SN -- there are no
jerks in the regular cast (unless of course you count Gordon or Sally,
but thankfully neither of them gets much regular screen time). No
stupid/ditzy/wacky people, either, thank God...

I've been so busy lately I haven't had time to write in my thoughts..
and all these great ideas and suggestions have been building up and I
MUST write in order not to burst! :)

First: I am SO glad the show has been renewed for another season. I've
kept quiet on this on purpose... in the past when I've loved a new show
as much as I do this one, it has been cancelled. Now that the jinx is
over, I can breathe again! :)

So.. do you think Thomas Schlamme will continue directing? He's such a
great talent.. it's wonderful to see his work.

Second: The poll. Gosh.. this is really difficult. I love so many
different characters for different reasons. If I had to choose one.. I
guess I'd say it was Dan. I just love his character and heart. His
heart is a big as the ocean.. and sits right there on his sleeve.. until
Sally comes along...;0 "Ya freak"

A close second are: Jeremy, Casey and Issac.

Third: Memorabilia.

In a household where entertainment memorabilia is the norm rather than
the exception, I'd say YES.. BRING IT ON! I really would love to have
the action figures... perhaps a stage and control room set up like they
used to have for things like Sonny and Cher and Mash... and of course
the coffee cups. Murphy Brown did this. And sweatshirts and polo
shirts (like real tv stations) and yes.. even blazers. And, of course,
baseball caps. Hey... do they need a marketing person for Sports
Night? LOL

A convention? What a great idea! Especially if we could hook up with
some of the actors and show our appreciation for producing such a
wonderful product! I have nothing but the utmost respect for each and
every person involved in that show. Sports Night makes Tuesday nights
MUST SEE night for me. I don't have many of those anymore.. it's a nice
feeling.

Okay, let's say that I have a tape that contains such SN-related things as
interviews, commercials, guest spots, appearances, etc., and there are
people on the list who would be interested in adding these things to their
SN "collections" as it were. You find out the names and locations of
everyone interested, and if there are LOTS of people interested you
designate a dubber for a given area. (For example, I live in San Diego and
if I volunteered to dub I would be dubbing for the West Coast.) Then the
person who originates the tape train sends it off to the first dubber. That
person lets their "section" know when the tape has arrived and collects
addresses and fees (usually no more than $5), makes the copies and sends
the tape off to the next dubber. And so on. By dividing into sections you
take the pressure off of just one person doing the dubbing, and in some
cases reduces the cost.

Sounds complicated, but it really isn't! :)

Pam, I think this is a great idea. In Sentinel fandom, we had something
called the Wonder Tape, which included lots of different promo ads, actor
appearances, guest spots the actors had done on other shows, etc. We've
already got plenty of material to start a tape like that for SN: Felicity
and Peter's Leno spots, the ET interview last night, various promos, Peter
and Josh at the ESPYs, and so on.

I've got a few of these on tape, and if other people wanted to donate
their own taped treasures, I'd be willing to put the tape together and
make copies for whomever wanted one, once we had enough stuff on it.

Anyone interested?

Marnee

Instead of someone trying to take the time to transcribe the latest
round of interviews, perhaps someone who taped these would consider
starting a tape train for those who would be interested in adding these
to their SN collections. It could also include little gems such as the
crossover ads for the show like the ones with the NYPD Blue cast if
anyone taped those...

We run tape trains periodically on other mailing lists and it works
surprisingly well; it's great for those fans who don't have ready access
to (in this particular case) Canadian programming.

Speaking of which, have any of you northern SN viewers seen SN spots on
CTV along the lines of, say, the Michael Riley/Kari Matchett spots for
Power Play? I've seen them for 'Felicity' on the PP tapes I get (gotta
love the tape train!) and think it would be cool if there were one for
SN.

I'm not so much into choosing who's #1 or the best. I like ensemble
casts. Yet, Diane, you took the words right out of my mouth. I love
that character.

Favorite character - tough call. For me it's a toss-up between Jeremy and Dan,
with Dan winning by just a hair. As Naomi said, he seems the most grown-up
and at the same time he's got this sense of humor that's in a class of it's
own. I'll still never get over his "attempt" to fix Casey up with Yoko Ono.
Dan: "You could be having sex with Yoko Ono right now". Casey: "Don't ever
say that again". Oh my... I'll never get over that exchange.

Also, his reactions to Sally "the alien" are priceless. And as for Dan
watching over and being protective of his friends (Casey), don't forget
his generous heart towards strangers. One of my favorite scenes was
Dan's scene with the homeless guy towards the end of "The Quality of
Mercy at 29K".

Dan's the man. For the record though, Sabrina Lloyd is my favorite
actor on the show!! Although Natalie's character still hasn't settled
down into a zone I'm comfortable with yet. Sometimes she seems centered,
competent, cool ("Small Town", "Head Coach, Dinner and the Morning
Mail") and at other times she seems kinda ditsy and gossipy, especially
when she's assaulting Dana with her "Go out with Casey, he's secretly
in love with you" routine, which happens way too much for my taste.
She's a good poker player though!!

I'm glad they have renewed SN for next year. Hopefully, it will allow
the show to settle in and get a larger audience. (NBC's moving Will &
Grace out of the opposing time slot for the rest of the year should help
as well.)

As for the poll, I'd have to say that my favorite character is Dan. I
like the dichotomy of his being one of the youngest ones there, and yet
most of the time, acting as if he's the most grown-up. (The
Jeremy-courting of Rebecca on his behalf was an aberration that I'm
going to attribute to l'amour.) Besides, who can resist a guy with a
killer sense of humor who recognizes soccer for the anesthetic that it
truly is :)

Have a great weekend!

Naomi

Hi.

Coming out of lurking mode for a couple things.

First I love action figures idea, but I'm gonna leave it to you people
and start working on video game "Mortal Sports Night" :)
In the first round you can be Dana beating up evil Quinn Sally.
If you win you get to be Casey fighting with Lord Gordon. Or you can get
you second choice as Dan fighting Quinn Sally.

Second the poll. My favorite has to be Natalie. She's funny, outgoing
and caring. Oh, and she has a GREAT name ;)

And don't they have a big Homicide thing in Baltimore every year or so. I
know there are some H:LotS fans on this list. Have any of you ever been? I'm
sure I saw pictures and info about the event on a website somewhere.

Hey all --

Sports Night Action Figures! I missed the beginning of this little
string so I went back and read the [sportsnight] archives and let me
tell you, LOL!!! SO COOL! I hope our "notable lurkers," as they have
come to be known, are passing these ideas along....

And whoever first mentioned a SN convention must have read my mind... I
was just thinking the other day how cool it would be to actually get to
meet the online SN "family," as well as the real SN crew. CSC blazers,
eh Scott? Who do we send our measurements to? ;)

I say we start a campaign to get some SN collectors' memorabilia into
production real quick! Gotta have one of those mugs, and man, oh man,
the embroidered sportswear would go fast, doncha think?

Dan's the man. I think the thing I really like is that he's so genuinely
caring toward his friends, yet has this great sense of humor -- and you
can always tell when he means to be joking around and when he doesn't.
But this is a tough choice because Jeremy comes in a very close second.
He is very real and up-front about everything, which is cool. He says it
like it is.

I'll have to put a vote in for Casey. I've just always liked him. - and he
also reminds me of craig kilborn (but we won't go there ;)
