I do not have March of the Wooden soldiers on VHS or DVD because i would rarely
watch it .
WPIX may not have the rights to air it because it came on a cable channel
earlier in the year .

I don't live in NY anymore, so I don't have any idea if WPIX we'll be playing it or not. With that said, March of the Wooden Soldiers is always one of the first two movies (Miracle on 34th Street is the other one, another PIX favorite from years ago) that I see after "Santa" shows up at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. :-)

Now that's funny. So that means both the Barrymore and Hildegard Knef films were shown at different times in WNBC's history.
This appears to have been the case. In fact, it would be interesting to compile a list of other movies of a similar nature (the original and the sequel(s)) that appeared on the same station in the NYC area.

It was definitely the Barrymore film, William. I don't think I have ever seen the '55 film.

Because the previous "Movie 4" ran the 1955 version frequently in the early 1960's, then WNBC shunted it to their late night "Great Great Show" through to the early '70's, and even ran it once on "Festival of Thrillers" in 1967. By the later '70's WOR-TV had the 1955 version.

Did "Cinema 4" show the 1931 version? Because the previous "Movie 4" ran the

Yes, "Svengali" was a "Cinema 4" mainstay for years. It's actually a good movie, though dated. However, the copy that WNBC had was in pretty bad shape and only got worse over the years.

It certainly wasn't as memorable as the intros for "Chiller" or "The Channel 11 Movie Festival," that's for sure. :-) Booor-iiing.
BTW, I saw "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" on WPIX around that time, so it's possible I originally saw the contents of this video clip back around '86.

Although I barely recall "Movie Matinee", I'm just curious to know when it
began. I know it began sometime in the mid 1980's.
WPIX would've aired the 1931 John Barrymore "Svengali." Because the 1955 version, in the 1971-82 period, was held first by WNBC, then by WOR.
Thanks, William. I wasn't sure if WPIX had it for a very brief moment. That would make it the oldest film "Chiller Theatre" ever aired, beating out the relatively ubiquitous "Dr. X" (1932) and also "Mystery of the Wax Museum" (1933).
